Best BBQ my husband and I have had in a long time. Both of us had the sliced beef sandwich ( i got the small and he had the large). Perfect portions for both of us! Delicious bbq and great service!! I got the large chopped brisket sandwich and my husband got the mixed meat Plate with 2 ribs and a mountain of delicious turkey and Texas toast. For his sides he got us both side salads. We were a little disappointed to see there wasn't cream corn on the menu but we weren't disappointed at all with the corn fritters we got as an appetizer! We topped it off with black berry cobbler and ice cream for dessert and then had to be wheeled away to our car because of a heavenly food coma. We've been to Loco Coyote. Always a fun experience. Knowing the shared history of Hammond's and Loco, thought I'd take the family here and try the BBQ. And glad we did... It's was early afternoon, just missing the lunch time rush and it was still crowded. A good sign. The food came, delicious and generous portions. One mixed plate and a huge pie fed all three of us. I like that they do not require you to purchase a plate for each person or pay a fee like another place we had been.. The waitress was ultra friendly and attentive but not too attentive. A real talent. Wish I could remember her name because she deserves kudos. Overall, a great experience. Glad we took the time to stop by and look forward to visiting in the future. read more

We were driving thru Glen Rose decided to stop in. The parking lot was packed, hence, presumably its good right? We were not disappointed at all. This place has great service, outstanding food, I ordered two meat dinner brisket n ribs, OMG. So so good. So moist n tender. Hubs ordered brisket n turkey. Best smoked turkey I've ever tasted. Yum. The potatoe salad, the beans & green beans are outstanding. Server was awesome and we got our food right away. If you haven't tried this place its a must. The pies were all sold out so I would imagine they are pretty tasty too. Next time will come earlier. read more

I'm not going to say that I would drive out of my way to get to Hammond's. After all, it's in Glen Rose, Texas. And it's not on par with the best places of the Hill Country that ARE worth going out of your way to find. But if you're in the area--perhaps at the state park or the drive-through safari--this is the best place I've found in Glen Rose. And there is really nothing to complain about when it comes to the food. It's a plate style place--meaning you order some sort of meat plate with some combination of sides, as opposed to everything being a la carte. The sides are adequate. The brisket is great. The service is friendly. And the price is cheap, considering you end up with half a pound of meat in your stomach and you have to waddle out the door for around 10 bucks. read more

Nothing special. Ordered brisket (moist cut), sausage, ribs, fried okra, pinto beans and toast. The ribs were pretty good...low bar. The brisket was fairly moist, but lacked flavor and the bark was nonexistent. Sausage might as well been store-bought and oven cooked--garbage! Lots of hype on this place, with just average BBQ... the brisket was okay, not amazing, the coleslaw was good and was made with mayonnaise and sugar with the vegetables finely ground. Fried okra was also good. Onion rings did not appear to be hand made, looked like the frozen and bagged kind. Didn't care much for the bbq sauce, seemed to have been watered down. They make nice big grilled cheese sandwiches on Texas toast for the kids. Our daughter loved it. read more

I have been coming to Hammonds, since it first opened, in the old building, and came back after the fire and the new building was built. Larry & His wife have spent years building the solid reputation they had for good food-great service and fair prices. The new owner has almost ruined the place with cold dry brisket- less than savory BBQ sauce now left on the tables at room temp- and changed recipes on the Pinto beans and Coleslaw from good to lousy! I am sure the new owner had zero restaurant experience and is looking to save money with his investment. However I also see this long established business closing for good due to its poor management. I wish Larry and His wife a happy retirement and now must find a new BBQ place to go to. I hope the new one on 144 opens soon and its food is great. I won't go back to Hammond's after over 40 years of patronage. And THAT is sad! read more

We ordered the onion and jalapeño appetizer with spicy ranch and it was an excellent start. We continued by sharing a chopped brisket and smoked bologna sandwich. The smoked bologna sandwich was great. Very flavorful and a nice variation of a classic. The chopped brisket was disappointing. It was hard to chew and it tasted like it had been sitting or was old. My son had a cheeseburger and said it was a good burger. Overall the prices were very reasonable and the service was fine. Maybe they just had a bad day on the brisket and everything else was a better representation of the restaurant. read more

We were so hungry after a day traveling from Kansas City so the welcome we received at Hammond's was wonderful and the service was top notch! We ordered too much food, happens when you're tired and hungry, right? Started with jalapeño poppers, which came out blustering hot, but we wouldn't order them again as they're not made in house and they're nothing special. Hubs had 2 meat plate with brisket, sausage, slaw and fries. All was good, nice smoke, tender, the standout was the coleslaw, made in house and absolutely fantastic. I had the child plate with rib and hot link, okra and pinto beans. All yummy, okra hot, scratch made pintos, rib big, meaty, smoky, loved it, except I wish the membrane on the back of the ribs had been removed. Portions huge, price reasonable, service great and food delish. We'd go back and probably will before we head back north! read more

This caught our attention based on such great reviews. However, our visit was "meh"'at best. Chopped brisket sandwiches were good, fair size and tasty. The onion rings and fried jalapeños were good. We arrived at 11:30- just before the lunch rush, and ordered two sandwiches, two burgers and couple kids meals. We waited too long for the food, most of it was lukewarm when it did arrive and the hamburgers (at about $10 a piece) were small. We made a comment jokingly to our waitress to which she replied "Well that's the kind of burgers we make here"; so snarky and uncalled for. We were obviously making light of a disappointing situation. Maybe we were outliers, maybe they forgot about us- but what threw us over the edge was the service we received. There's far better bbq joints to choose from, and won't be coming back. read more

Took our big family group for lunch and it was so good! First off the service was so great. Our waitress was on top of everything. Definitely one of the best bbq places we've been to and we're picky! If you leave here hungry it's not their fault. Their loaded baked potato is a full meal by itself. Wait staff friendly and helpful.

Road trip to GlenRose to check out the famous BBQ place since 1966. The ambiance is country tin walls with deer, fowl, fish and entertaining license plates. Red picnic tables get you cozy up with friends. We tried the chopped beef, the beef was tender but oddly had a pretty good amount of sauce mixed in. Frozen French fries and onion rings were alright, and frozen jalapeño poppers. Hub ordered the peanut butter pie, it was generously cut with Dream whip topping. Okay, I've said it before, I'm not a big BBQ fan, but I enjoyed Hammond's. On a "Real Texas" weekend trip in the area with our boys, we had to get some Q. The decor inside is fun and the seating is all picnic table style. Our waitress was cute and friendly. I got the stuffed baked potato with sliced brisket-I requested burnt ends, and was told they couldn't guarantee all burnt ends, but she'd put in the request. When it came, it was basically all burnt ends and they were yummy! The BBQ sauce is a bit sweet with a slight kick. Youngest boy got the rib basket and devoured it in record time, but didn't really like his pinto beans. Other boy got the brisket plate and liked it a lot. Hubby got the 3 meat plate and like the hot links and turkey, but wasn't really impressed with the ham. Great food, fun place and good prices. Definitely recommended! read more

I would compare this spot to Bill Miller's BBQ but they're not stingy with their portions. The brisket does not have a smoked flavor because it's not smoked; there is no pellicle crust on the meat and it's not juicy, it's just meat. Rule of thumb, if the brisket is done right you don't need bbq sauce and let me tell you, I needed bbq sauce. The sausage was very good and a little on the peppery side, not overly greasy and the casing was done right. The ribs were very soft and flavorful, but again not smoked. I think they may cook the ribs and brisket in an oven and attempt to add the smoke flavor during the end of the cooking phase. ‍ The turkey was very moist, however, it does not have a meaty texture and it was more of a thick piece of compressed deli meat. Not impressed. The potato salad was sweet with a mustard kick. The green beans were really enjoyable but lacked ham or bacon flavor even though they were served with pieces of ham. The baked potato was cooked thoroughly and had a generous amount of toppings. For dessert we tried the blackberry cobbler, chocolate pie and peanut butter mousse pie, which were all very delicious. Before heading out of this enjoyable town, we went back for a portion of sausage and cobblers for the road home. The staff was very nice, service was prompt, tables and restrooms were CLEAN! If we passed through Glen Rose again I'd definitely stop by to give this spot business. read more
