Great place for food in Kakaako. Currently, no seating, but they are a master at takeout. The store also has some packaged goods like cookies and a small rack of clothes. Some of my favorite items to order, in no particular order: Braised beef loco moco is very tasty. The meat is really good, 100% delicious with no fatty/chewy bits bits. Egg and rice are good too. Salmon katsu is a winner. I got 2 pieces of salmon which were cooked to a nice medium center. Came with rice, mac salad, and red ginger tsukemono. The red ginger is very mild and tasty nothing like the "sharp" one that usually comes with bentos. Pork loin sandwich is good (if, like me, you like Chinese mustard). It is a bit heavy on this mustard, so if you are not a fan of spicy mustard, or generally try to avoid snout stimulations, maybe stay away from this one. Comes with a generous portion of fries. Hamburger steak is good. Comes with gravy, onion, and mac salad. One homemade style patty and eggs. Vietnamese coffee is great. Not sure if it's a special, but it has a rich and authentic taste. Service wise, I would recommend calling in your order so you don't need to wait long for your order in the store. I know sometimes they run out of items too, so it's better to go early. They also close pretty early, as well so make sure to grab a plate before they close at 2pm. Lastly, ambiance wise, the store itself is very well put together. Everyone should follow Hamada General Store on Instagram. I start the day checking out the daily specials. If I can, I run down when they open at 9am so I can get it before it runs out. Today, I got the Salmon Skin Salad ($12). It's a favorite. There's crispy skin, chilled roasted salmon, Wasabi soy vinaigrette - perfection! I also picked up the Carnitas Burger ($12). I expected some shredded pork, but, surprise, there are several big chunks of carnitas! Along with avocado, swiss cheese, homemade burger patty and brioche bun this is two meals! Got the chimichurri burger on the specials menu today (Wednesday 7/10) and it was good, but for the price of $18 for a burger and crinkle cut french fries I would say it was just alright just because it still felt like a typical drive in burger with a slight twist. The staff was really nice and welcoming, and I got my takeout order really quickly (it was around 1pm and not busy). I absolutely places like Hamada General Store, the history and love of supporting local is so heartwarming. Originally it was literally a grocery store until it closed in 2007 and since it's reopening in 2008 now more a take out restaurant they still kept it's solid roots of a grocery store as you can find snacks and merchandises that are all locally made. They are open Monday through Saturday 9-2 and though I arrived a bit later at 11:30 majority of the specials were sold out :'( their menu is quite simple and I just wanted a bite since I was called into work thought this would be perfect. I got the tonkatsu sandwich but should've gotten something else instead of one it was two thin loin katsu that was just didn't work for me. Tonkatsu sauce was great it was the hot mustard! Not the spicy brown mustard but the same you have at a Chinese restaurant that you dilute with shoyu they smears that on the top and bottom bun talk about clearing your sinuses it burned my palate and forget about the how it taste it's besides more breading than pork loin this meal was greasy and I love grease lol! Fries weren't burnt but tasted like it was cooked in old oil so it was like an oil sponge and no sign of potatoes inside, I wasn't even offered ketchup and assumed it was inside...nope. I ended up just eating the katsu patties which was bland without the katsu sauce but the hot mustard made me tear up it was just a hot mess I threw it all away! Three stars for the awesome staff that's so friendly and I loved how they support local because that's just how we roll here in Hawai'i. Location: 885 Queen St. It was my first time visiting so I wasn't quite sure where they were located. I used google maps and ended up going around the block. Now that I know where they are, I think it's easiest and fastest to get there from Ward Ave. They offer limited parking in front of the restaurant. Food: the food was okay. It's not a place where I feel I need to go back but it wasn't horrible either. The wafu hamburger steak was a bit thin and well cooked (it should have been medium). The plate appeared big but a lot of it was rice and lots of onions. Also, I wasn't a huge fan of the ponzu sauce which made everything taste a little tangy. The beef in the braised loco was nice and soft but a bit dry. Currently ahi is very pricey so they only offer salmon katsu. The salmon was thick and moist. However, because it was thick it was lacking flavor in the middle. They do drizzle a little bit of spicy sriracha mayo sauce but it wasn't enough for the thickness of the salmon. Service: the service was fast and friendly. I did a phone order and was quoted a wait time of 15 mins. The food was ready when I arrived. There was about 5 cooks, one cashier, and one person helping. Of note, one person on the grill was not wearing a mask and appeared to be eating something. The cashier was very friendly and helpful when placing an order. Tonkatsu sandwich Thin piece of meat that was bartered and fried to death. Fries that came along with it but they were not hot and they were severely under seasoned. Wafu Hamburger Steak This one was really bad! The hamburger steak was hard, dry and chewy. I'm pretty sure they have these burgers par cooked to speed up the food coming out. But if not done right like in this situation it turns out bad quickly. Just not sure what happened. I want to give them another opportunity but that's pretty pricey as well. Finally got to try this place out. It's a nice cozy atmosphere. Service was friendly! We tried the hamburger steak. We liked that the beef was local and grass fed, but the gravy and the Mac salad was SALTY salty Salty! Had to scrape it off and eat single macaroni's at a time to ease the saltiness. I've read other reviews and I've confirmed it myself that the gravy was salty. The Mac salad was just as salty. Just a small adjustment would bring this dish justice! The burger was beefy like I like it. The tofu watercress salad was really fresh and good. The salmon Katsu that came with it was perfectly cooked! I was quite pleased with this dish. When I was a kid, I remember my grandma taking me to Hamada General Store on Queen Street. She used to buy me little treats like Horlick's malt candy. You you get the same vibe of that old stor, the hunter green store with white trim and a Hamada General Store sign hanging in front, reminded me of good times with my grandma. The food is made fresh to order so don't expect fast food here. What you can expect is, plate lunches that can serve two people and have leftovers. The service is always great! You always get a warm smile, and the chef and cooks in the kitchen always flash "daShaka" Some of my favorite dishes are the Kimchi Reuben sandwich. Pastrami, malted rye, Swiss cheese, and kimchi with garlic aïoli. Also, you can't go wrong with the local Moco. For those of you new to the island, it is simply, an all beef patty with home style brown gravy, topped with two eggs ove white rice, with potato Mac salad. Yes, that's a lot of carbs, and yes, it's so good. The specials are really creative too. The Verde burger, which is an all beef patty smothered in green chili Verde is another one of my favorites. Parking can be a little tricky. It's a small lot. My pro tip would be to go off hours. Around 1:30pm right before they close is probably the best time because it's not crowded. I guess I'm late the Hamada's bandwagon, but let me jump on now! It was recommended to me by my husband, whose office eats here at least once a week. I suggested it to my office as well. I'm going to have to move. Having HGS a scant three blocks from my condo is a really bad notion, because I can see myself returning here over and over again. Let's face it....they're naughty. Sandos like...the Kimchi Reuben, slathered in buttery goodness, piled high with pastrami and garlic aioli, and of course...fresh kimchi then grilled to a cheesy melty perfection, is not fair. Although the prices may seem more than you are used to, I guarantee the amount you get and the quality of that food will not disappoint! Some pieces were still crispy, well seasoned, and not that oily. 2. Kimchee Reuben - I am so glad that I got this order. There was a healthy portion of pastrami and kimchee. The bread was tasted well that when I took my first bite, I could taste the crispness. Also, the aoili on the bread was well balanced for all of the strong flavors from the pastrami and kimchee. Overall, a very well balanced sandwich. Oh...and did I mention the fries? They were so good that although I ate half my sandwich, I pretty much scarfed down my fries. Amazing elevated local style food. These are my favorite types of places. Great food with a plentiful portion served in a takeout box but they have seating available. With prices going through the roof this is a way of getting great food at a low price. Salmon katsu was awesome with the perfect garnishing and sides. Two good sized pieces of fish. The special we got was a meatball marinara sandwich with lots of cheese on a fluffy focaccia breast served with fries. It was similarly excellent. I was familiar with the limited parking, so I arrived early - before 11:45am - and there were 3 open parking spaces that were clearly marked. The restaurant now has a sign above its front door! Inside, there were many seats available. After a while, around 12:15pm, every seat was taken. My friend and I sat under the television in the corner - not a good choice because it was loud. We sat next to the speakers. Uhg! Anyway, the system is: order at the counter, pay, and have a seat. Your order number will be called when your food is ready. Maybe I missed hearing my number because the cashier brought my meal to me! Thanks! Plantation Iced Tea - highly recommended. It's not too sweet, not too bitter, and not too acidic! It was perfectly refreshing! Wafu Hamburger Steak - wow! Complex flavors and textures! Delicious and intriguing! I didn't think I'd like the potato mac salad, but I ate it all even though it was peppery for me. I took a bit of tsukemono with a scoop of mac salad, then a bit of hamburger with gravy, mushrooms, and onions! It was a fun meal because i could combine the different ingredients for a different taste in each bite! YUMMY!!! I surely will return because this was an almost flawless experience! There was a little gnat flying around us which was a bit annoying. Mr. Hamada in the parking lot more than made up for it. He was so friendly and kind to my friend. He let her park in the shady corner and helped her backup/move forward while giving her excellent directional hand signals! See you again soon!
