Very good food and VERY good prices! There is a lot of creativity in the menu. I played it safe since it was my first visit and got fried catfish and shrimp. My husband had a seafood relleno (I think that's what it was) which was a special that day. It was really good! We also tried the calamari with parmesan cheese. The flavors went really well together. read more

Went after a movie and didn't pay attention to the time we arrived. It was 9:30 and they closed at 10:00. They were so nice still and served us with no attitude. I really felt bad about it but they said no problem. I had the fries crawfish poboy. Really good flavor and crawfish not overdone read more

We decided to have dinner here based on the positive reviews. We ordered the trout and shrimp and grits. The food was absolutely delicious. The chef did not skimp with the shrimp. The service was excellent. We will definitely return. read more

I remember coming here before under the name of Fish City Grill. But I was told by the waiter that it had never been a Fish City Grill, even though they are both the same parent company. Once again the food was great. I had my favorite Shrimp Creole and grits. I also had the favorite appetizer they have. If I need to say the name, then you have not been paying attention. Good food, good area, good service. read more

My friend and I came here last night and sat at one of the bar tables. The place was pretty busy, but the staff was still very attentive and friendly. We ordered the fried pickles for an appetizer... they were pretty good! Not too salty. I like my fried pickles cut in spears generally. These were cut like sandwich pickles, which were also good! Makes them last longer. :) I ordered the crab cake sandwich for my entree... it was pretty good. A little soggy, but I think that's generally b/c crab cakes are pretty soft. It reminded me of eating a black bean burger, but it's a crab cake... since you're trying really hard to make sure the sandwich doesn't fall apart. I chose slaw as my side which wasn't anything stellar. I'd probably just recommend going w/ the fries unless you're trying to be healthy... and if that's the case, then you probably shouldn't be at Half Shells to begin with! Overall, a pretty general experience. Nothing really stood out, good or bad. I'd probably come back with friends who have picky taste in food... because this place seems like everyone could like it. read more

I found the spot with great tasting seafood for a pretty good price! The happy hour is amazing and everything is sooo good! Must go !

I come here quite often with my dad and we always get the fish tacos! Hands down some of the best tacos I've EVER had :) oysters on the half shell are a fabulous appetizer as well. The only complaint I have is that my mixed sangria was made with salt instead of sugar lol...the manager apologized and all was well in the world :) read more

Came here around 5pm for Mother's Day dinner and we were immediately seated. The restaurant itself is quite small but it's nice and cozy. I've been craving seafood but to find good seafood is the problem. Until now! Out waitress Kate was super friendly & informative. We asked her for her suggestions since it was our first time and she brought us out a sampler of their soups & the oyster nachos. The nachos aren't a joke! I loved them! However, I was craving shrimp cocktail so we started off with that. They serve it with tortilla chips. The shrimp cocktail had a nice kick of tobasco in it. I also ordered 2 Rockefeller oysters and 2 grilled oysters since it was happy hour. They were $2 a piece and just sounded good. And they did not disappoint! I lovvvved the grilled oyster. It simply melted in my mouth. For my entree, I got the combo of fried shrimp with grilled oysters with hush puppies & coleslaw. The coleslaw is made with apple cider vinegar so it has a nice tangy flavor to it. It definitely isn't your traditional coleslaw but it's good. There was a lot of hush puppies for a side order! They were nice & hot with great crunch to them. The shrimp had a good crunch to them and was seasoned well. The grilled oysters in my entree wasn't as great as the appetizer oysters I got earlier since they weren't in the shell. Overall, my experience here was amazing. I'm definitely coming back, especially on Wednesdays when the oyster nachos are $6! Mommy tip: there are high chairs & a diaper changer! read more

Service was awesome! Trina rocks! Food was super! Great atmosphere! Lots of choices on menu and everything is great!

I wasn't that impressed by this place. I visited on 4/2/10. I thought the food was too salty. The shrimp and oysters were just okay. There was nothing spectaular about the place to make me keep coming back. We waited for 45 minutes for a table Friday night and I'd say it wasn't worth the wait. I think you can find better seafood in the Metroplex for a very similar price. But the service was great, espcially since we sat at one of the tables served by the bartender. Usually that means you get lackluster service, but here we didn't. And beware, this place is really small. read more

I'm a big fan of Half Shells gumbo. It's consistent and good. They also have a fit menu that helps you pick out a healthy option. They have a happy hour that's fairly descent too. I think it was $5 house wines and $2 beer? read more

Chalk up another good review for Catherine! Seriously, she is awesome. I read the other reviews before coming and couldn't help but notice several said Catherine was the bomb so needless to say I was pretty excited when Catherine introduced herself. She was very attentive, knowledgeable of the menu, and super friendly! On to the food. I tried the crab bisque, and instantly fell in love. It was rich and creamy (as any good bisque should be) without being over bearing. You could sip it or gulp it and enjoy it either way (I found a neutral bite in between the two that was just right). It had shredded bits of crab throughout that gave it a nice texture and good seafood flavor without tasting fishy or cheap. Highly recommended, probably my favorite thing we tried. I also ordered the crawfish medium spicy... Here's where I was a little let down. The crawfish were okay, but not really worth the current going price of $8.99 per pound. I ordered a couple pounds and ate all of it but if I was to go back I wouldn't order the crawfish which is why I docked half shells a star. It was just lacking in flavor and even with medium spicy there wasn't much spice or flavor to it. I think crawfish should be juicy and flavorful with just a touch of burn at the medium level. I will say however, I also ordered a few fried oysters (and also tried a sampler of their signature dish the fried oyster nachos) and was very impressed. It's actually been a few years since I've had oysters, and I forgot how good they are. I went for the oysters per Catherine's recommendation and it seems to be what Half Shells is most well known for. They oysters were fried with a light cornmeal batter that was just right, not too thick but gave it a nice light crunch. They were not greasy and tasted very fresh, it was quite obvious that these were not frozen oysters dropped in an old batch of oil. All in all I definitely recommend Half Shells it's a great spot to grab some lunch or dinner and I will definitely be stopping by again if I make it out that way again (I'm sure I will). But I will definitely be ordering the crab bisque and fried oysters, saving the crawfish for another place and time! One final note, the bartenders are on point. Had a few margaritas which were strong and delicious. Don't worry, we took an Uber to/from our hotel to be responsible. read more

Tried it again. Staff was really good as they were last time. Calamari was soo good! Kids shrimp basket was such a great deal and my kids loved it. Even the soda's were perfectly carbonated. I had a hard time even giving 4 stars not sure if I totally agreeThe two combo I got shrimp and oysters. Their were 4 shrimp and like 5 or 6 tiny oysters and a whole plate of fries enough to feed like three people and the steamed veggies there were a lot but I came here for the seafood and not the fries and veggies. read more

I really enjoyed half shells. I sat at the bar and the staff was extremely friendly. Everything I tried was something that they'd recommended. Drink selection is terrific and the daily special offer a great variety off the menu. The oysters were great, I'm always skeptical being from the gulf coast but they definitely passed the test. Good spot for colleagues after work or impressing a client. read more

Amazing food! And incredible east coast oysters! The appetizers were on point (Crab Cake was to die for)! We've been long time customers of Half Shells but after tonight we will rethink that. Our food quality was not good at all. We spent a significant amount for dinner to be delivered and it simply was not good. The fish was smelly and it didn't taste fresh. The other food was just ok. Very disappointing given the many options available in our area. read more

Best happy hour or regular priced margaritas on the planet. Only four bucks and they are pretty strong. I've had most of the fried seafood and all of it is pretty good. Everything is pretty affordable compared to most seafood places. Most entrees are 8-15$. The food quality is four stars but the prices make the value five stars for me. This place is a hidden gem in Plano for seafood and margarita lovers. read more

Their fish and shrimp tacos tastes very good! I also like their po boy sandwiches. Overall it's a great value for the price you pay for seafood. I like that it's close to work and convenient for to go orders. I've also taken guests for dinner and they have also enjoyed the food especially the fried pickles and hush puppies. The email specials are frequent and great to take advantage of. I recently got a free entre for celebrating veteran's day! This restaurant is probably my most frequently utilized food establishment in the shops at legacy. read more

Dropped in here on a weekend about 10:40 PM, some 20 minutes before kitchen closed but Catherine assured me getting something to-go was not an issue. So, I ordered a bowl of gumbo and some blackened shrimp to go. Catherine said I could substitute cheesy grits for the slaw which comes with the shrimp and I was ecstatic. Sure the slaw is fine but just wasn't in the mood for it. Ordered a pint of Revolver to quench my thirst while I was waiting and all was well. About 15 minutes later, food arrived and after paying bill and leaving Catherine a nice tip for her efforts, I departed, Upon arriving home, I dove into my food. First of all, the shrimp, which were good size and which there were six of, packed a nice punch. They weren't so spicy that the seasoning overwhelmed the flavor of the shrimp, but just right. The hush puppies which also came with my order were pretty equally outstanding. And the rice was also strong to quite strong. As for the cheesy grits, they were absolutely perfect. They had great flavor and a nice creamy texture. The only down note was that I was so full from all of this that I could only take one spoonful of the gumbo, but it too was simply outstanding. Saved the rest for the following day. Great service, great food, nice work Half Shells. read more

Came in for oysters with a colleague while in town for business. We'd already had Mexican, sushi, barbecue and other American and wanted something different. Had 4 varieties of cooked oysters and red beans/rice. The food was hot, fast and tasty. Food was average but the service was awesome! I sampled the shrimp and grits and did not like them. They should put more grits on the plate as well. I also sampled the oyster nachos and loved them; order these! Lastly, I tried the buffalo shrimp and also liked this dish too. I wish they had more on their menu, but all in all, good offerings. Service was very friendly, albeit a little slow. And they were kind enough to bring out samples of their sauces and soups (none were memorable) since it was my first time visiting. We have eaten here approximately 8 times and it is very good. The wife is more of a seafood connoisseur than I am, and she loves the place. I, on the other hand, would love to see more of a variety on the menu. But that is just me. I do eat shrimp and crab cakes, but not crab legs or other fish in general.
