Half Shell brings together two Seattle institutions - Tom Douglas and oysters (and other seafood) into a space formerly occupied by Etta's. But now, the room has lightened up, the menu has become a bit more casual, and the daily oyster HH is exactly what Pike Place Market needed. On a recent visit, they had 2 types of oysters of which one was on HH, which happened to be Hama Hama's. Oysters were fresh, well-shucked and a great deal at $2 a pop. The rest of the menu also is solid. I loved the smoked black cod here served with ritz crackers, sour cream and a very yummy fennel jam, as well as snow crab legs, which are super easy to eat. You can get all of these with the Pearl Platter too. The crab roll was also very good, but I have yet to try any of the grilled fish here. They also have a surprisingly good smashburger too. Service has always been good during my 4 visits. Definitely worth a visit if looking for oysters and more at the Market.
Seafood at Half Shell was definitely calling our names for happy hour! For our table of 7, we ordered 4 dozen oysters, the mini Dungeness crab rolls, green fried tomatoes, the Dirty Martini Dip with hand-cut fries, and the roasted oysters. Everything was incredibly fresh, and we loved every bite! The service was excellent, and the staff made our experience even better. If you're visiting Pike Place Market, I definitely recommend stopping by Half Shell for fresh seafood and a great happy hour. Be sure to get there early for happy hour it gets busy, and it's well worth it!
Solid spot. Service was great, staff was attentive and easy to deal with. Ambiance was on point, good vibe for a seafood/bar spot. Oysters were amazing, some of the best I've had in Seattle. Crab roll and fries were delicious, no complaints there. Let the waiter pick a few drinks for me and he nailed it! Would come back for sure, just leaving room since this was a first visit.
Great place, amazing location! Sat outside during happy hour oysters got a few apps was all pretty good! The chowder was very good, drinks were all potent and tasty. Service was pretty good too dont really have anything to complain about! Would recommend and definitely would go back when back in town
Half Shell is a wonderful seafood restaurant just north of Pike Place Market that really highlights the flavors of the Pacific Northwest. We started with fresh oysters, which were beautifully presented over ice with lemon and mignonette. They were incredibly fresh and delicious. We also tried the Dungeness crab roll, which was packed with sweet crab and served on a perfectly toasted bun. Everything tasted fresh, high quality, and thoughtfully prepared. The atmosphere is warm, stylish, and relaxed. The wood interior, Pearl Bar, and outdoor patio make it a great place to enjoy lunch, dinner, or happy hour. The cocktail menu is also impressive and pairs perfectly with the seafood. Service was friendly, attentive, and welcoming throughout our visit. If you're looking for excellent seafood near Pike Place Market, Half Shell is absolutely worth a visit. We had a great experience and would happily return.
I'd have to start by saying this place have the best and freshest oyster selections anywhere! It's that good that we ended up coming here for 3 days straight during our short stay in Seattle. We ended up trying 5 different kind of oysters all sourced locally and they're all just spectacular! Creamy, umami and oh so fresh! Hammersly, Eld Inlet and Cliff point among others. BTW their roasted oysters are also really good - larger size, fresh and juicy not overcooked. Pro tip: The best part is during happy hour from 3-6pm (and also maybe during lunch hours?) they're only $2 each which is a steal! Other than the oysters we also had the smoked black cod which is out of this world and a MUST GET in my book. The seafood assortment called the Pearl Platter if I remember correctly - it is a good way to sample a little bit of everything. It has the smoked black cod, snow crabs, scallops aguachile, shrimps, and oysters. Service is always prompt and friendly. They have cozy indoor seating as well as a patio seating with nice view of the waterfront area. My favorite drink here is the dillenger which is smooth and balanced with a hint of dills. Can get busy at times so book ahead if possible. Located in the quieter section between Pike Place Market and Belltown. Highly recommended. 15 minutes walking from Pioneer Square area.
Bit of a late review, but pulled up to Half Shell for the Spring Restaurant Week menu with a few friends. It wasn't too hard to get a weekday reservation for 4 and it's located right on the waterfront of Pike's Place, but it was pretty easy to find street parking nearby. Overall, the food was a little inconsistent in quality across the board, but the vibes are excellent for a nicer night out. Oysters (4/5): Super fresh and they have a rotating set of local options. We went with the waiter's recommendation, which were super sweet and a bit salty. One of my friend's had never had oysters before and they were pleasantly surprised by the way it wasn't too fishy! Clam Chowder (4.25/5): Clam chowder was actually probably one of the best bites of the night. Super creamy and luxurious with a good amount of clams. Shrimp Cocktail (2.5/5): Unfortunately, the shrimp were overcooked and too chewy. A real shame because the shrimp are huge! Surf N Turf (2.75/5): Mixed feelings on this one. The scallops were really small, but delicious, fresh, and sweet. The beef cut was some sort of awful hangar steak that didn't feel fresh. A bit small for a main and roasted potatoes were just okay. Lobster Roll (4/5): The bread was warm and nicely toasted with butter. I wish there was a bit more lobster to improve the ratio, but the quality of the lobster was nice! Atlantic Beach Pie (4/5): Very very tart, but I loved it especially with the fresh whipped cream. The saltine crust brought a good amount of salt as well.
One of my best childhood friends came to visit because she says the seafood here is the best. The waitress was so nice to all of her tables. The drinks and food arrived quickly. It was enjoyed by everyone. $2.00 oysters in the happy hour were wonderful. My husband loved his steak frites. The steamed artichokes were great. I normally stay away from restaurants that have a large group of tourist I was pleasantly impressed. Will return again
Walking Pike Market area and I needed to take a break. Then,,,,, I found Happy Hour sign here! They just opened but half of seats were already occupied. Must be good! When I got inside, the receptionist asked me table or counter, I was by myself so whichever is fine so she escorted me to the counter seat. It's a good size of the restaurant whether you're dining solo, enjoying a date night, or catching up with friends and family. I ordered half dozen of the oysters on the half shell-shucker's choice and mini-tini. When I ordered at the counter, the staff said I can pick mini-tini from regular martini menu. Oh, that's great. So, I chose "i dream of aquavit" and she told me "it's a little bit weird flavor, is it okay?" What? What's mean weird flavor? But I was interested in, so I told her I'd like to know "weird flavor" lol! Shortly, my "weird flavor(lol)" mini-tini came and it looked cute, taste was okay. I don't like sweet cocktail, so it's good for me but hard to explain by words. lol! My half dozen of oysters on the half shell, fresh, sweet sea flavor, and yum!! I enjoyed my break time and I'd like to come back & try regular menu!!!
We had a celebratory work event with a group of about a dozen of us, so we started with appetizers from both the happy hour and dinner menus. The warm potato rolls were sooo good--soft, buttery, and delicious. The clams and fried green tomatoes with crab were also tasty starters. For my entrée, I ordered the scallop appetizer and the NW chowder. The scallops were delicious, but the chowder was a little on the thick side for me. Others ordered the salmon, which seemed to be a bit overcooked and on the dry side. We shared all of the desserts, and the lemon fennel tart was a hit. The coconut cream pie wasn't quite as good as I remembered, mostly because the whipped cream could have been a little sweeter. Service was smooth considering the size of our group, and everyone had a good time.
Half Shell is a lovely neighborhood seafood spot, especially if you can catch happy hour. We went for the $2 oysters, and they were delicious, fresh, simple, and exactly what you'd want from a casual Seattle-area seafood place. I do wish there were a few more topping options for the oysters, but the quality itself was great. The outdoor seating was really nice, and the staff were pleasant and welcoming. To be honest, Half Shell and Mr. Fish next door feel very similar to me in terms of service, vibe, and food quality, so I almost think of them as companion spots. Both have that relaxed, fresh-seafood feel. Would I fight the terrible parking, traffic, and pedestrian congestion just to come here? Maybe, maybe not. If someone suggested it, I'd happily say yes, it's a lovely place for a casual seafood evening. But I probably wouldn't go far out of my way for it.
You need reservations on Saturday nights! Had a reservation with three friends and we were seated right away. Decor was understated with some rope details and big jars of oyster shells. Excellent service. The food was very good - my first time trying halibut and it was scrumptious. The sauce (chili oil?) was quite spicy. The passion project drink was tasty and the pound cake dessert was enough for two to share. The prices seemed as expected for a downtown Seattle fish spot.
For a oyster lover, this restaurant is amazing. They have daily happy hour special with $2 oysters. They're tiny but super flavorful and briney. The tapatio champagne mignotte was the perfect additional topper. The rest of the menu was also super tasty. We had the scallop agua chile, fries with the same mignotte made into a mayo, and the dirty gin martini dip. I wanted to order more dip to take home it was that good. The agua Chile was also super fresh and light and perfect for a hot summer day. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Really well decorated restaurant in a great location.
Great space! We sat outside and it was a nice time of the day. Sun was going down and we caught happy hour. Got everything on the menu enough for four & some drinks. Food was great for the most part. The only I would say is the shrimp nuggets need a little something. $2 dealers choice oysters were amazing. Great mignonette, just right with flavors in the tart brine taste. We walked an easy but breezy walk to Half Shell from the Seattle Marriott. Good dose of fresh air! The place was busy and with subdued nautical decor and modern music vibe. The salmon chowder was the best we've had while in the area. We enjoyed the tenderloin cooked just right, but the broccoli rabe side was a pass. Nice street side views, and service was very attentive and friendly. Definitely recommend if you're in the Pike/waterfront area. read more

My fiancé and I stumbled upon this place while looking for a seafood dinner in Seattle. We walked in around 8pm on a Friday night and thankfully they had plenty of seating at the time. They have a very spacious business, with indoor seating and also a small patio in the front to get more of the people watching experience outdoors. We opted to sit inside and got a cute table on the corner that felt very cozy and intimate despite the large size of the place. The ambiance is elevated casual, with warm wood furniture and calming blue accents. Service was excellent from when we walked in. Our waitress was patient and well informed about the menu options/ helped us make a few choices. We ordered: - Roasted oysters: first of all these were GIANT. Juicy, full of flavor, came out steaming hot. The spices in the butter are warm and the crisp breadcrumbs are elite, giving them a crispy texture. Squeezed a little lemon on them to bring a nice acidic contrast. Excellent! - Fresh oysters: we got 4 each to try, two on the sweeter side and two on the more tart side. I tend to favor brinier oysters but these were all so good I actually found myself possibly liking the sweeter ones better? Incredibly high quality! Would come back just for the oysters. - Ahi tuna crudo: a little app with some tuna and anchovies. This reminded me of the flavor of pickled herring so definitely more emphasis on pickled/briny flavors. Quite different from tuna crudos I'm used to but still very good. Not my preference in terms of flavor profile but high quality and well presented! - Dungeness crab roll: Okay, this was a showstopper. We ordered just one to split and, once I started eating it, I really wish we had ordered two. The bread was pillowy and soo buttery. It was filled with this delicious crab salad that just melted in your mouth and had generous amounts of sweet crab meat. It also comes with these delicious fries on the side that were also soo addictive and some tartar (?) sauce. Truly phenomenal. - Black cod: another star dish! Super tender, and buttery flesh-- cooked to perfection! The skin was crispy and flavorful. The spring artichoke stew with salsa verde made this dish feel so bright, light, and refreshing. Phenomenal quality in all their ingredients. Perfect for spring/summer. - Coconut cream pie: we ended with the most decadent piece of coconut cream pie that was just divine! Sweet but not overwhelmingly so. The coconut bits were generous, the cream was fluffy, the crust was crispy (and not too buttery , more on the dry side). This dessert was amazing and well balanced, perfect way to end our meal. Overall, this was one of my favorite meals during my short stay in Seattle! Very impressive considering it's in a very touristy area (figured it could be hit or miss). The quality of seafood is top notch and all the dishes are well prepared with phenomenal flavors. Kind and welcoming staff. Perfectly located in an area that is walkable and has plenty around it. Will come back whenever I'm in Seattle! read more
Stumble upon this little gem and they were serving happy hour oysters so we were sold. I love raw oysters and nothing beats happy hour oysters. Outdoor seating is an option but we chose to sit indoor and the inside was so cute and well decorated. The service was phenomenal and friendly. For food, we ordered the warm pull-apart potato rolls which were super soft and comes with butter on a half shelf, parmesan roasted Brussel sprouts and two dozen of their happy hour oysters. The oysters were super fresh, sweet and salty and delicious. I'd definitely be coming back! read more
My partner and I had a friend's gf visiting from NYC and naturally she wanted to try what we're known for in the PNW- seafood! We found Half Shell after scrolling on Yelp and were drawn in by their daily happy hour which takes place from 3-6pm. It's located right next to Pike Place and you can eat with a slight view of the water. We started off with the Dirty Martini Dip which was light and the perfect size for four people. And because we hadn't eaten all day, we ended up with two rounds of two dozen fresh oysters. A dozen for each person! Our friend from NYC loved them and was surprised at how buttery and fresh they were. The last thing we got were the Roasted Oysters which I would probably pass on next time. I felt like the bread crumbs on top made it feel like I was chewing on sand despite knowing the oysters were clean. Overall, this is a solid happy hour and I wish I got to try more! read more
Great service at the front of house with speediness and also attentiveness to clearing our table and getting our food out. We ordered the clam chowder cup, 16 happy hour oysters, and a crab roll that was on the happy hour menu as well. Super solid value during the 3-6pm happy hour that runs from M-F, $2 oysters is amazing and you can't better elsewhere! Restaurant is cleanly and everything was orderly. Oh. My. LANTA. What a find. What a happy hour. We're from baltimore so we're massive oysters fans, this is our first adventure into pacific oysters and it was AMAZING. The happy hour features 2 buck shucks. And discounted cocktails. 24 oysters and 4 cocktails later my partner and I are full and thriving. We sat at the bar and had the best service from Matt! The whole restaurant is honestly such a vibe. Very low key and cozy but still feels like a treat. With this being so close to Pikes place there's no excuse not to come here and experience this DELIGHT. 12/10. Will probably be back tomorrow. read more

My boyfriend and I came here on a friend's recommendation and WOW -- we're so glad we did! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was stunning. It felt fancy yet cozy, with super cute décor and would be perfect for a date night. As a huge oyster lover, I can confidently say these were some of the best I've had -- fresh, perfectly balanced, not too salty or fishy, just right. We also got the mussels and they were absolutely delicious. The flavors were spot on! We came during happy hour, which was such a great deal -- especially considering how high-quality everything was. The cocktail of the day was a Blue Milk-inspired drink (Star Wars fans, you'll appreciate this!) and it was SO good -- creative, refreshing, and totally unique. The service was also amazing. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole experience feel special. We'll 100% be back next time we're in Seattle. Highly recommend if you love oysters or just want a great spot with vibes, drinks, and fantastic food! read more

Came for HH (3-6) and enjoyed our time in part due to our servers (John & Serg) and the HH options. We were able to find seats at the bar and were promptly greeted with the HH menu, drink menu, and dinner menu along with a brief explanation as to our options. We decided on two of their daily special oysters which were $2 each. I'm not much of an oyster expert but my wife said they were good quality. I also ordered the $15 burger and the $9 fries on the HH menu. Both were good, the fries were thick cut and we sprinkled malt vinegar over them. They came with a mayo and ketchup option. The burger was juicy and filling. My wife also ordered the HH crab roll. Similar to a cold lobster roll, small, but flavorful. She ordered a mini-tini with a pickle taste and enjoyed it. I got a hef beer, which was also good. Certainly not an inexpensive option, but expected for the area. Would recommend! read more

The restaurant is open and inviting, and I adore all of the shells around the bar. Such a cool touch! For being as close as they are to Pike Place Market the prices were crazy reasonable, and I hope to visit again very soon to take advantage again of the TWO DOLLAR OYSTERS. read more
Great food and great service! This was my first stop as a sit down meal in Seattle and let me tell you, very few places wow'ed me as much as this place did in terms of price, service, and food especially considering how close it is to Pike Place. The happy hour oysters are a must! There's a few spots you can get HH oysters but this is just a great spot to people watch and they have other delicious HH bites too (e.g that fried oyster slider with a yummy rémoulade). read more
Living just minutes from the area. My husband and I walk nearby frequently. The happy hour sign always appealed to us. Finally we gave Half Shell a try, and we LOVED it. My partner gave it a 10/10. He definitely wants to come back. The service was quick and our server was so nice. The ambiance is so cute and fresh. Good vibes, it did not feel crowded no matter how busy they were. I ate some oysters here for dinner and I feel sick and I got severe stomach ache btw we got their $2 oysters and they are not super great but they were ok...didn't expect to get sick like this tho The vibes and atmosphere of the restaurant are amazing and perfect for date nights but with the lack of quality and freshness in oysters I don't think I will be back :(( read more

This spot has a great location by the waterfront but the only thing is that it's definitely a fight for parking if you're coming by car. The happy hour oysters were very good and would recommend coming during that time slot. I also liked the heirloom tomatoes side dish because the goat cheese had an interesting texture and flavor that paired very nicely. read more

By far the best dinner I've had in Seattle (and I like eating here a lot) had the fresh raw oysters, took our waiters rec on which type, the rolls are seriously to die for, it's like thanksgiving morning yeasty rolls on steroids cause wtf why is it so good, and the most delicious whipped butter served in an oyster shell? Yes please. Topped it off with the 4oz steak frites, steak, buttery soft medium, insane steak sauce they had on top literally almost a brisket consistency it was so tender. The fries are obviously hand cut and salty and thickkkkkkk, so freaking good. Was too full to try dessert but I definitely will be back. My friend had the washing king salmon and also loved the salmon (I tasted it and as a person who's very picky with salmon it hit) my only note is maybe a better pairing with it than the onion rings, a herbed brown rice/wild/quinoa would hit better than the onion rings imo. My wife and I and then my wife and I and son came here two days in a row, that's how great the food is! On both visits, we had the $2 Happy Hour oysters, which were Washington oysters: Hammersley, Totten and Samish Pearl. They were addictively great! Served with the house sauce and Tabasco and slices of fresh lemon. We also ordered off the Happy Hour menu, ginger shrimp nugget sliders, mini-Dungeness crab rolls, and a Painted Hills cheeseburger. All the dishes were incredible: fresh ingredients, very well-prepared. The ginger shrimp nugget slider included a chili crisp cucumber and it crunched really nicely. The mini-Dungeness crab rolls with aioli weren't that mini and were plenty meaty with fresh, delectable crab. The hamburger was piled high with ground beef, cheese, lettuce on a soft bun, speared with a jalapeno pepper and olives. Yum! The decor was nautical themed, blue and gray colors and stylish in a warm and welcoming way. The booths and tables and chairs were super comfortable, giving you a stay awhile vibe. Our waiters on both nights that we came here were wonderful: friendly and chatty. I also spoke with the oyster shuckers who were blindingly fast and accurate in their jobs and friendly as they explained the different oysters they were shucking. After walking all around pikes market our stomachs started to grumble, so we made our way over to half shell for happy hour. Service was top notch - friendly and attentive - and we were sat very quickly. The oysters were so good - with great accompaniments. The steak frites were fine but not amazing - I blame myself for not choosing a seafood entree. Their happy hour mini crab rolls were definitely the highlight! Came here for dinner since my son wanted oysters. We were seated in a booth and had a great view of the sound and the park by Pike Place Market. We found this restaurant looking for a seafood option that could accommodate our party of eight. Seeing the martini dip on the menu sealed the deal! Our server was great and our interactions with another server helping her was even better! The crab roll was the winning entree for the evening and I was so glad I ordered it. Seriously SO good! I ate five crab and/or lobster rolls on my trip and this was by far the best! The restaurant is right next to Pike's Market, so you can check out the market before you eat and take in ocean views if you'd like. I'd go again! read more

We tried the small bites at happy hour. The mini crab rolls were very rich and filling. Personally, they felt a bit too bland for my taste but nonetheless they are filled with fresh crab. The roasted oysters were excellent and probably one of the best and flavorful of the roasted ones I've ever had. The clam chowder was pretty decent and tasty. Overall, the food is very good. The service (imo) is hit or miss - like we did not get the basics like crackers and Tabasco sauce that was suppled to every other table and had to keep asking for things - guess that's dependent on the time you visit and who you get. Pretty pricey as well but not a surprise give that it's at pikes. read more

We arrived around 3:30pm on a Friday and were seated right away. The restaurant was busy, but not packed as there is plenty of inside and outside seating. We came for the $2 oysters during happy hour from 3-6pm. We started off with a dozen of the oysters on the half shell and they were so good and fresh! So good that we ended up ordering another dozen. Super cute place that now occupies Etta's old spot. Of course this is another Tom Douglass establishment. Mom and I didn't stay long and only had appetizers. The best one was the fried green tomatoes with Dungeness crab. The whole dish was delightful. The shrimp nuggets were just ok. I found them to be surprisingly dry, but the cucumbers they came with were supurb. They were the star of the dish. I could just get a bowl of those and be happy. I tried the baked oysters with Nuduja butter. I wasn't too fond of these because they were very rich and the taste of the ocean was overpowered by the butter. We sat outside because it was a nice day and our server was so very nice. She was very personable and attentive. Great service. We plan on returning to try their happy hour, but eating here really made me miss Etta's. Half Shell was good, but it doesn't have the elegance that Etta's did. Still a great place. I am very disappointed with the service here. I sat down and waited a very long time to be served, only to watch the staff completely ignore me while they took the orders of several tables who arrived well after I did. It is incredibly frustrating to be overlooked like this. The service is very slow, unorganized, and unprofessional. I will never come back, and I absolutely do not recommend this place to anyone. read more
Cute restaurant by Pike Place with an amazing oyster happy hour deal! $2 a pop from 3-5 pm every day, including weekends. They also have fun drinks and other food on the happy hour menu as well, like the fries I ordered for $8. The oysters were local and super fresh, 10/10 no notes. The fries are thick (not my usual preference) but were very fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Service was fast and attentive.
