I spent more time pulling rocks out of my mouth than actually eating! On the bright side, the chargrilled oysters were delicious--probably because they didn't come with a side of gravel. Half Shell is a large restaurant in a strip mall right off 65. It's an Alabama 4 * in Yelp but a 3* in most other major cities. The food is average, nothing spectacular. I was disappointed with how limp the lettuce on my side Caesar salad. My presentation for the seafood pot pie wasn't spectacular and it lacked seasoning. My husband thought his stuffed portobello mushrooms were just okay. The hush puppies were fine, but we couldn't taste the jalapeño in them. We won't make this our spot for dinner during our drive home for the holidays. read more

Pic is of my $22 Orleans Shrimp and "Grits" after I got home with it... minus about three shrimp that I ate right after I opened the container because I was starving. I said many curse words and then it dawned on me to take a pic - not a single grit and the container leaked everywhere so not much sauce either. I mean, how is it even possible to prepare a dish of shrimp and grits and not even notice the absence of the grits?? Nothing about shrimp nor grits is worth $22 to begin with; total waste of money. Disappointed yes, frustrated yes. Ordered two items to go. First the Uptowner. There was no lettuce, tomato and Dijon horseradish as per the menu. The steak had tough pieces and much too much gristle. The second order was for the Voodoo Chicken Sandwich which was okay, however the side I requested which was broccoli was no where to be seen when I opened the bag at the location where we were staying. Our waiter Tanner was very attentive. It's Sunday afternoon and they have 2 employees taking the glass out of the lights over tables next to diners. Very interrupting for diners try to enjoy a meal. This hurts me because we have eaten here many times over the years. Our food this day was sub-par. The Herb Encrusted Mahi was over cooked, had no flavor of herbs or parmesan, the small portion of crab on top was ok. The garlic for the sautéed spinach was burnt and made it un-editable. This place was recomended by locals (family). We arrived early 5:45PM since they do not take reservations. Our party had 8 people and apparently rhey do not have many seats for large parties. We were finally seated at 7:15. We (2 of us) ordered a dozen charbroiled oysters and they were tasty however, some crunchy in the oysters guessing shell pieces? I also ordered some gumbo that was not very thick, kind of wattery and not very hearty. For our entree, ordered the seafood au gratin snapper entree with fried okra and hush puppies. The snapper was a bit overcooked and just ok. The rest was tasty. She ordered the Royal redfish and she enjoyed the dish. We ordered the special blueberry cheesecake and it was tasty. Sitting at the bar watching the oyster shucker and grill man I had to order some bbq oysters. They were amazing and probably the best I've had in town including the places on the water. We were immediately seated at a booth where you can see the bar, and able to see the grill as our oysters were cooked. The service was fairly quick with drinks and food. The ambiance was perfect with the lighting getting dimmer as the evening went on. The fish and the oysters were cooked perfectly! I've never experienced a redfish cooked so evenly in my life! Got to pick up some food from this little gem during my stay in town. With the whole COVID pandemic, they offered to bring the food right to your car when you pick up. The service was friendly, the food was fresh and flavorful and the location was super convenient to my hotel. The fried okra side was huge and perfectly fried. I got the oyster po boy which was chock full of fried oysters! Yum! I didn't really care for the grilled oysters though because the oyster shells weren't cleaned well and there were a lot of shell bits on the oysters. I also liked that this location offered to sell some household staples from their pantry if you needed items like flour, rice, eggs etc. I think that was very considerate considering our current stay at home situation. read more
