I have been to the Half Shell multiple times at both the Mendenhall and Southwind locations. It is a great place for dinner with friends or even a date. The atmosphere is always great! On the dinner menu my personal favorite is the Hawaiian Coconut Shrimp. These shrimp aren't the average catch. They are HUGE! I promise you will be full afterwards especially with a side (go for the stuffed potato) and a roll. If you're looking for a new brunch spot Sunday Brunch at the Half Shell is a MUST! I had the Eggs Benedict with breakfast potatoes. I plan on coming back next Sunday for more. Fabulous brunch for a fabulous price! As soon as I walked in, I normally would've left immediately, but everything else was closed! For starters, the place is extremely dark, the bathrooms are disgusting, the floors will make you want to throw up, and the food is HORRIBLE! I can't believe this place is open for business. Tried this place on a whim and found it to be a great find. Not sure how to describe the neighborhood that Half Shell is in. It's just down the street from Gus' Chicken. It doesn't appear to be all that bad but there is a security guard walking around the parking lot so customers will feel safe. Hell, it made me feel less safe, that was one scruffy looking security guard. Inside of the place is a nice dim looking honky tonk kinda place. This looks like Memphis. Took a minute or two to get seated but evenually I got a table. Menu had a variety of burgers, salads, seafood and cajun style stuff. I ordered the Red Beans and Rice and a Patio Salad. Both arrived pretty quickly and there was ample portions. Red Beans and rice had diced onion, cheese and diced sausage in it. It was pretty rich and filling, I could ony eat half of it. If I had a criticism, they probably were a bit too generous with the onion. The Patio Salad was a mix of leafy greens, blue cheese, cranberries, walnuts, artichokes and viniagretted dressing. So much food I could only eat half of each. Half shell also makes a dynamite crab stuffed shrimp. Monster onion rings too. One place for a good meal when in Memphis. read more

I saw these reviews the other week and was a bit sad that I had half a day left of work before the airport and unlikely had the time to swing by. To my surprise, the flight was delayed. I think this was the first time I welcomed a flight delay! Through rain or shine, I was going to make my way over there. The place was very laid back with many tables and booths and a middle bar section for those interested. I ordered their signature KING CRAB BISQUE which was thick and soothing. The SOUTHERN STYLE CRABCAKES were smaller but that is to be expected at most places. My main reason for going was to get my hands on the raw bar! I ordered a dozen of the JUST-SHUCKED OYSTERS all for myself and I plowed through those things quite quickly. Their oysters are from the Lousiana Gulf Coast. Most of them were HUGE. They were bigger than any I've ever seen! The service wasn't bad overall. I rushed there as soon as it was open and it packed up really quickly. Must be one of the better ones in town! read more

The Half Shell is a restaurant focused on seafood in Memphis. The prices ranges from under $10 to almost $40, depending on whether you order a po boy sandwich or a steak and lobster. I started with a whiskey diet coke. It was strong and less than $5. I started with 6 peel and eat shrimp. It's one of my favorite foods. Only the shells remain. I believe it was $7.95 Then I had a soup and salad for $8.95. The salad was loaded with bacon and cheese, and I chose blue cheese dressing. I love a salad that is so loaded with toppings that I don't have to use a lot of dressing. For my soup, I had their delicious crab bisque. It had crab on top. It was full of crab, creamy, and delicious. Everyone enjoyed their food. No one had any complaints. Some of the things they ordered included tilapia, voodoo tuna, and jumbo fried shrimp po boy. I'm sure I'll be back. Next time, I think I'll try the tilapia royale which came with spinach cakes. read more

The husband and I finally had the opportunity to have brunch here this morning. I ordered the Steak Benedict (steak, tomatoes and poached eggs on English muffins with Bearnaise sauce) and he opted for the Half Shell Benedict (poached eggs, lump crab meat and spinach on English muffins with Bearnaise sauce). While both were very good, his choice was the clear winner. Something about lump crab meat and spinach with Bearnaise is just simply delicious. It also helps that I am a big fan of their hash browns. They have a bit of a kick to them- not sure what the spice is, but it works. The best part is they are diced and fried crispy- not the soggy mush you usually get aside your eggs and bacon. My husband much prefers their grits and claimed them to be in his top 5 now. We also shared a piece of their coconut cake for dessert. While good, I wasn't blown away as The Beauty Shop has ruined all coconut cake experiences for me for life. I'm excited to come back here sans fetus to partake in their $3.75 brunch special Bloody Mary and mimosas. Not only did they look delicious, but the price is definitely right on. I get into Memphis on a monthly basis for work and eating is always up in the air.... Pork BBQ or Gus's or anything else tasty. But the Half Shell voodoo dishes are like an old friend you never see enough and always enjoy the visit. You can have steak, salmon, catfish, shrimp or chicken blackened with voodoo sauce. Get a side of broccoli and a beer, and it is flavor perfection. I had 7 blackened 24 count shrimp and wow, Eating voodoo was the highlight of my trip. If you like flavor and some spice on you food.. I went here with a group of friends last weekend, and the experience was, while not the worst, certainly not the best. I won't be back. To start, our waitress was both rude and too quick...I thought she was going to refuse me service when I didn't know what kind of beer I wanted as soon as I sat down! Once she brought us our drinks, she disappeared for a good 10 minutes. When she returned, it wasn't much better. She couldn't answer my question about the voodoo stuffing, which seems to be one of their big sellers, and seemed irritated that I had asked it (this was not a hard questions either - "does it have peppers in it?"). I ordered the jumbo crab stuffed shrimp, which was awful. The shrimp was really fishy tasting, in the "I may get food poisoning way" and the hollandaise sauce was so bad I scraped it all off. The rice pilaf under the shrimp tasted burnt, and the loaded baked potato I received was hard, flavorless, and had what tasted like plastic cheese baked onto it. Not that the food was very good, but before I was even finished the waitress took my plate and put it in a bus tub. Really? She didn't ask or anything, and when I got my check, I saw that I was overcharged for my meal - she was very huffy about fixing it. We all paid, and stayed maybe another 20 minutes and talked; they were not busy, but she walked by and glared at us several times, and wouldn't even look at the water glass I had put on the edge of the table to be filled. Just awful service, terrible food, and not the cleanest of places. My beer was the best part of the whole experience, and even it was overpriced. read more

Whoa...! That's exactly the thought I had in the middle of my meal here. I tried one of the specials - a cider seafood stew that hat was simply delightful! The broth was light and sweet, which was nice compliment to the various seafood items mixed in with it. I don't know that I've ever had a better seafood soup/stew type of meal! It was perfectly cooked, appropriately seasoned and filled with unexpected flavor - a must try if you visit in the near future (I do believe it's a seasonal item). I also got a boat load of oysters! Perfectly cut from the shell, these oysters were fresh and delicious! The Half Shell is a pretty casual place but not too casual, so it's a good option when you're in jeans and also a good option for an after work snack! The service was also good. Our waiter visited frequently enough to have all of our needs met, but not so much that it was overbearing. He also let us take our time, which was nice. Half Shell is one of my go-to restaurants in Memphis. I LOVE it! They have a great brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. I recommend the benedicts or the shrimp and grits. Great bloody mary and mimosa specials as well. For every other day, the Baja Seafood Nachos and VooDoo Catfish are my favs! The place has a great atmosphere. Everything is home-y and dimly lit. There is also a really nice wrap bar that's pretty inviting. Most of the tables are pretty secluded and tucked away between walls, so you can focus on your company at the table. read more

I love the Half Shell. I have come here a lot with my mom and it was really 'our spot' when she visited me in Memphis. Primarily when coming here I would by default get the shrimp and grits. It has a Creole kick to it that made it have some extra awesome flavor. If I didn't get that, I liked the Voodoo Chicken. Once again, great flavor and great food. Drinks here well made and not overpriced. Would you believe me that they make a pretty good margarita? Fact. I like the ambiance of the restaurant. Wood, dim lighting, and intimate. My only complaint is the trains. The restaurant is right beside the tracks and you can hear everything. It is something that goes with the territory due to the location. That's okay. This place is great. I have had dinner many of times here, and never been disappointed. I usually stick with the New Orleans Style Pasta and always do and will recommend it. What I really want to talk about is brunch. I had brunch for the first time here this past Sunday, and I will be attending next Sunday, next Sunday and probably the Sunday after that. The Nawlins Omelette is simply amazing. My taste buds could not stop cheering and I wanted another one before I left but realized that would not be a great idea for my stomach. Lunch Specials are the best!!! But this place is just all around good. The prices are reasonable and they don't skimp and that's why I love them!! If you were once a fac of Red Lobster, Pearls Oyster House or anything like that then you will defintely love Half Shell. The chargrilled and rockefeller oysters are my favorite. On this last visit I tried the oyster sliders are they were great! They have like 2 fried oysters on a slider bun with some really good sauce and tomatoes and i think lettuce. Its a really good appetizer to share with 2 people. I tried the Catfish Pauline and let me tell you this was a MEAL BABY!!! Its TWO pieces of catfish with some crab meat and delish sauce mix on top!! It had alittle bit of spice to it and im sure thats what makes it Louisana Style. It was breaded perfect and the perfect side was brocolli to go with the rice. This was definitely a meal I appreciated twice!! I think maybe even alittle bit more the second time when I was dead hungry at 9pm after putting my baby to sleep! The Half Shell brunch burger is one the best things to eat in Memphis. Charcoal flavored burger with jalapeno bacon served on toasted English muffins covered with Hollandaise sauce. Service was excellent. Price was great, 4 brunches for a total of $60 including drinks and tip. read more

HIghly surprised and overjoyed with the dinner we had here. Was not expecting much when we rolled in. Service and front of house staff was a disaster. Pretty unprofessional and either not able or not choosing to take the time to answer a couple of questions we had about the menu. Oysters were delicious as was the cocktail. However the oysters were "warm" when served to us. Seemed as though they had been warm water thawed, which is never good for raw proteins. We all noticed this as we ate, but chose to risk it as we were starving after our 5 hour drive. I will say that I and another in my party ordered the special; Seabass, and it was cooked as perfectly as fish can possibly be prepared. The fish alone is the reason for the 4 star review. read more

My last dinner in Memphis was here. It should've been my last meal on Earth. Crab cakes the size of hockey pucks that were fresh, delicious, and with the perfect sauce. Steak and King Crab legs for a main course, that comes with choice of potato and hot roll already buttered. I had never eaten King Crab legs before, but they were tremendously good. Even for those with a shellfish allergy, these babies were good. To top it off, I had a slice of key lime pie and a cup of coffee. I certainly treated myself by racking up a pretty good tab on just food, but it was well worth it. This meal was so good I lit up a cigarette and asked the waitress if it was good for her too (kidding). But really, after I finished this dinner I just sat back sipped my coffee and listened to the other people's conversations. Worth every dollar spent. read more

I recently moved to Memphis and The Half Shell instantly became one of my favorite places to eat. We had oysters for a starter and they were good quality oysters that were not too big nor to small in size. I was impressed when they brought out not only Tabasco sauce, but also Louisiana hot sauce. The two best plates on our table was the soft shell crab (special) and my amberjack sandwich. I would also suggest trying the Italian spinach as a side, I loved it! This is a fine example of a menu that tricked me into buying away from Yelp reviews...shame on me. I saw "big and plump Louisiana" oysters, so I ordered half a dozen. I've never had Louisiana oysters, and I don't think I'll seek them out from a raw bar offering again. They didn't have much personality...no brine, no salt, no distinct flavors. For my entrée, I decided to get back on plan. I decided to double down on oysters, and ordered another half dozen Rockefeller and a cup of the crab bisque. Both were good, and I liked that the Rockefeller was heavier on the house spinach than cheese. The bisque was solid, but a little heavy. Waitress was excellent and food prep time was speedy. Highlight was the crab bisque. Husband ordered catfish Pauline Louisiana style. The fried fish fillet slices were piping hot with crisp outer dredge. The creole meunière sauce was very good. Drizzle some on the rice, too. I had the voodoo catfish. The heat was just right for me. The stuffing accompaniment was ok. This seemed to be white bread based. Low point was the Italian spinach. I would never order that again. Quite a bit of variety in menu including Poboys. It had been awhile since we have been to this location. First of all the interior hasn't been updated in years. We had good service and they made sure we where taken care of. I ordered the Fat boy po'boy The blackens shrimp looked like salad shrimp and the oysters (the two on the sandwich) where dry and over done. The crawfish tails where all batter.The steak fries where good.My daughter got the bacon burger which was nice size and tasty. This place has the potential to be really good they just need to invest in their ingredients. It is good for what it is but could be a lot better. read more

So time seems to be passing by the half shell. While that can be good with some places I wouldn't say that with this one. Menu is outdated. Food was outdated and not good. The place itself is outdated and dingy. As usual they were packed and more power to them. They must be doing something right as they have been around now forms long time. I've had some good meals and some not so good through the years but the original location leans more towards the good side. Had the fish tacos tonight and they were surprisingly good.
