Truly excellent local Turkish restaurant. The cold appetizers were fantastic, starting with the Shepard salad. The hummus and lebne were outstanding. Best chicken kebab I've ever eaten. This is my third time there. The lamb kebabs, although tender, could've used more marinade and then grilled more. the kitten (ground beef with spices patties) was also very tasty. The baklava, although good, was nothing unusual. The service, was very pleasant and accommodating, but a bit spotty... on balance more than acceptable. After my $40 order was placed, they still charged me with a $5 delivery and refused to honor the free delivery claim because its "a busy day for them". We love Turkish food and eat it quite often. Hakki Baba is a very friendly atmosphere - run by a family from Gazientep (Turkish Anatolia region) and has more spice than other parts of Turkey. All the cold appetizers were very tasty, and the kakbas succulent. Ferda (one of the three hosts ~ their brother is the chef) was very friendly and added a personal touch to the experience. Family owned and operated small , cozy Turkish restaurant. Easy to reach and roadside parking. For weekend and groups better call for reservation. While they have regular Mediterranean restaurant menu they also serving some special kebops like "pistachio kebop" and "walnut kebop" and more different tastes . If u tired of gyro, shish kebop and all regular Mediterranean menu this small family restaurant is the best to go. All sides are at home made quality and fresh. Meats and kebops not dry not burned ,they really good. Another nice thing is , u can order yr kebop by its length " meter" perfect for 3-4 or more people. I wish I could get a photo. Just got delivery through grub hub, it did came rather quick, got excited, trying a new place. Ordered simple items like baba ganouch and couple of shuwarma like sandwiches. Proceed to try baba ganouch, kid you not 3 bites in to it I am running to the toilet! Whatever I swallowed came right up! Ok no biggie, it happens I guess, never to me but I proceed to eat the chicken Shish kebab sandwich, which should not be in a normal wrap, that type of food comes in a pitta bread... So far so good no more trips to the bathroom, I call the place to tell them that they should check their baba ganouch, the guy answers with what do you want me to do about it ?! I said nothing ! Wtf ?! Say thank you and have a good night, then I hang up! Couple min later he even gets the balls to call me back and tell me to never order again and watch my mouth! Hakki Baba is one of the hot spots that is fairly new in the neighborhood in the Cliffside Park area. Due to the neighborhoods diverse population there are roughly over 15 to 20 restaurants that serve Mediterranean/Turkish cuisine in the area, and Hakki Baba is the most unique out of all of them. The small mom and pop shop restaurant was established a little over a year ago.What makes Hakki Baba different out of all the restaurants in the area is that their unbelievable hospitality. The restaurants cozy antique design with wood walls and ceilings gives the restaurant a great vibe. On to the dishes, this restaurant is not your regular "kebab shop" everything is made from scratch their appetizers are solid the turkish cigars were nice and crispy not too salty and their lebne which is strained yogurt with walnuts had the perfect amount of garlic. The sheperd salad is a must try it is actually a "home made " sheperd salad it was diced finely in tiny pieces with extra virgin olive oil. Their signature hot appetizers small "findik lahmacun" were nicely seasoned and baked perfectly. If you go with a group of people the friendly servers recommend you to try their family style kebab platters, which gets served over pita on top of a long flatbread stand that is to die for!. The family style platters consist of most of the kebabs they have on their menu. The adana, their kofte, lamb and chicken kebab all of their meats are grilled to perfection. The best dish that got our attention was their signature walnut kebab and pistachio kebab, the crunchy nuts gave the meat a unique texture which was out of this world. Their homemade kataifi roll and almond pudding was fresh as well as their turkish tea. It is absolutely recommended to make reservations. One of the key things Hakki Baba does that separates them from the rest of the restaurants in the area is their unique menu that offers different kebabs, their cozy boutique restaurant setting is unlike any other kebab houses and most importantly their hospitality, they treat you like you're home. Ordered the Mixed Grill and the Hummus. Everything was delicious and amazing. The fresh baked bread was warm and crispy and went perfect with the meal and hummus. My favorite kabobs were the Adana Kebap and the Chicken Adana Kebap, both were full of flavor and juicy. I would still order any of the other kebabs they offer. The rice was also very good. We had humus that was great, eggplant salad and roasted eggplant were spicy and very good. We also haf cigarette barreckas and liver that were tasty. I'm quite familiar with many of the middle-eastern restaurants in the North Hudson/Bergen area, some of which I've patronized for years, and finding HAKKI BABA, almost by accident, one night while driving on Anderson Avenue in Cliffside Park, after a bit disappointing dining experience at another middle-eastern restaurant, was a bit intriguing. I'm glad I decided to give it a try a few days later. HAKKI BABA is unassuming and its front, decorated with planters and small signage, is very easy to miss, unless you know their address and have been looking for it. Its interior has a rustic feel that's cozy and instinctively sets you up for the experience you're about to have: Turkish "home-made" food, carefully prepared to order, with quality ingredients and flavors, that is simply delicious. The menu is not too extensive and/or intimidating---so don't be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone. Here you'll find all the staples of Turkish cuisine, generously portioned and priced right. The moment we sat at the table we were served iced water and brought in wine glasses (HAKKI BABA is BYOB!). Freshly-made hot bread with butter, and extra virgin olive oil with spices (at our request), followed. We ordered a small Shepherd Salad (a mix of finely chopped red tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, onions and parsley, seasoned with herbs and tossed with olive oil and vinegar), which was more than plenty for two; Hummus, from the cold appetizer section; Tavuk Adana Kebab (skewered ground chicken mixed with bell peppers, garlic and spices) from the grill section, and Fistikli Kebab (skewered ground lamb and beef mix with pistachios and herbs), from the traditional section. They were two of the best kebabs we've ever had. Each one of them consisted of two wide skewers, char-grilled to perfection, served with rice, char-grilled red tomatoes, green peppers, chopped lettuce and onions salad. Both kebabs were cooked right and were very juicy. The pistachio kebab, which we never had or seen elsewhere before, was a pleasant surprise and the one menu item that we keep ordering every time we dine at HAKKI BABA. We finished our dinner with a Pistachio Milk Pudding---not too sweet, with plenty pistachio flavor and the right consistency---prepared, as we learned, from the matriarch of the family. Yummy! In subsequent visits, we've tasted their Babagannoush, which is smoother and smokier (better!) than the ones we've tasted elsehwere. We've had also Tavuk Sis Kebab (skewered marinated tender cubes of white chicken), grilled to perfection; Has Has Kebab, the same skewered chicken and ground chicken kebabs but served on a bed of spicy chunky red sauce, which is to die for; and the Hakki Baba Special Mixed Grill, a plentiful dish of different kebabs, enough to share for two and equally delicious. I guess we can say that we came, we tasted it and we got hooked, for we've been going to HAKKI BABA for our "middle-eastern fix" ever since, pretty much on a weekly basis. Over the following visits, we've come to know that the restaurant is a true family business, run by a brother (who's also the main chef), his three sisters and their parents, all hard working immigrants from the wonderful land of Turkey. Don't expect "fanciness" here, just friendly and attentive service from folks for whom English is the second language, but with all the desire in the world to please you, serve you the best Turkish food you ever had and make you come back, time and time again. I recently ordered a food delivery at 5:55 pm - nothing complicated, on a weeknight. I was told it would take 30 minutes. After 50 minutes I called and was told the delivery was on it's way. It did not arrive until 7:20 - 1 hr and 25 minutes after I placed my order. The food was also cold - apparently not transported in an insulated container. Celebrated the wife's birthday there. Wanted to use the Restaurant.com coupon but I had some problems. The service was a bit slow even though when we got there we were the only ones. As vegetarians there isnt too much besides a few cold appetizers, 2 hot appetizers and pide. So we got various mezze and enjoyed the bread we got with it. the first bread was more like a ciabatta and the second set that was hot was like naan. My family is turkish and is suppperrrr picky about food, so the place i picked had to be awesome if it was something new. Let me tell you - EVERYONE enjoyed everything! The food, the service, the presentation all of it. The owner even helped me decorate. The party was suchhh a success. Everyone was taking pictures of the food, raving about the restaurant. I cannot tell you how difficult it is to get old turkish people to agree on something. On top of it, one of the guests brought relatives visiting from turkey and even they were impressed. In conclusion - this place is a rockstar. Ive never seen food presented this way, or be this tasty. Just back from our first but not last dinner at Hakki Baba & it was excellent. Seriously, the biggest & most perfectly charred chicken kebabs I have ever seen. BF had the lamb & it was very good as well. Had a small combo app platter, shepherd salad & BF had lentil soup. All was great & what I especially loved is that it wasn't oversalted, as oftentimes I find food at restaurants to be. I've been going to this family's restaurant since their opening of Sofra, in Montclair. They then had their restaurant called Hummus, which has finally moved to this location and become Hakki Baba. Their quality has never faltered, their service is warm and diligent, and their interior decor gets better with every restaurant. Go to Hakki Baba to get warmly greeted as though you've just entered your grandmother's kitchen on your own birthday. Order the labne to start, which is a thickened yogurt spread that somehow registers as cool and light while also being hearty and satisfying. Save some to put on any kebab you might order. Order a kebab. I like the Tavuk Adana, ground chicken over rice (marinated in some sort of GODLY tomato and spice mixture). But honestly, get the assorted grill so you can try everything. If you want me to zoom in on the one dish that will change your life forever, get the Sarma Beyti. I think I'm going to name my first born child after this dish. It's ground lamb kebab (with more flavor and tenderness than anything I've ever even looked at before), wrapped in fluffy lavash bread, smothered in a bright and slightly sweet tomato sauce, served around the fluffiest and most flavorful rice in the world, with yogurt. Guys, get it. If you're so full you think you might actually die, you still need to get a dessert. The baklava is perfect, but that's not what I'm even here to rave about. I live for the pistachio milk pudding. This dessert, somehow, has the texture of a tall glass of cold milk. But it's solid. It's so lightly flavored and has the lightest touch of pistachios crumbled inside, that it will actually HELP if you're too full to drive home.
