I had egg rolls and kung pao chicken. Egg rolls ok but not hot, like they had been sitting in a warmer. The chicken in the kung pao was dry, like it had been cooked before being thrown in the stir fry. There was little sauce, and the rice was overcooked and dry. The food wasn't as good as it looked in the photo.

Pho Tai

Picture this: It's a dreary day outside, drizzling rain coming down relentlessly, and your stomach decides it has one--and only one--craving. Pho. You get on the road, because everyone knows the best food comes from just driving around and stopping inside random restaurants. That is exactly what happened at Hai Ky. From the second I walked in, I felt an immediate comfort. My heart, stomach and nose knew, this was not going to disappoint. The waitress immediately came to our table to get our drink order in, and ensured the table didn't have any questions. I ordered the Vietnamese coffee to start, and it was strong, silky and smooth...everything you would want in a viet coffee. When going over the menu, everything was clear and easy to follow, and my eyes gravitated towards the Pho Tai. So naturally, that's what I ordered. The broth was hearty and warm, the meat was good quality and the fixings were bountiful: including onion, beans sprouts, basil, lime wedges, green onion and jalapeños. The sauces were on the table already and they had everything you could want such as hoisin, sriracha, and soy sauce. The flavors mended perfectly and went above and beyond just basic satiation. The service was fast and attentive, ensuring tables never went without anything they could possibly want. Nothing extra, but certainly not lacking in the slightest. The restaurant was maintained and clean, many promotions were on the wall boasting crazy good deals, and although the inside was relatively small, they hosted a large heart with even better food.

Spicy Hai Ky. Addicting!

I so miss this restaurant being north. They used to have a store north a few years ago but it closed so the only one is south, which we rarely get to since we don't go south. My favorite dish is the spicy Hai Ky dish with chicken and noodles. So darn good and boy they load you up with chicken. Just love that dish, it is so filling so tasty and not too spicy to take away from the overall dish. Please consider coming North Austin again! I would be a very regular customer!

"Shrimp" spring roll

Ordered shrimp spring rolls and they were big but each only had 1 small shrimp in them. Super disappointing. I also got spicy beef noodle soup and pad Thai. The soup was bland, there was no kick to it whatsoever and the sliced beef was dry. The pad Thai wasn't "bad" it was just different from any other pad Thai I've ever had before. No, I guess it actually was bad. Highly unenjoyable experience overall. I did a pick up order.

It's a small mom and pop shop, simple decorations, but very authentic feel. Service is excellent. The broth is so delicious and a level 4 out of 10 spicy. Adding a couple of lime squeezes will bring out the perfect balance in flavor. No need to add any extra seasonings.

#44 pork & eggroll vermicelli
Stephanie W.

No-frills, smaller spot in south Austin. It's been on my list, but I don't think I'd come unless I was craving pho and I was already in the area. The pho dac biet was a bit small in noodle portion and salty in soup $12. I liked the cold vermicelli dish (~$14) more, and loved the char on the pork, as well as generous portions of meat in both dishes. Egg rolls were okay. Quick service.

The…read moreThai basil leaves were absolutely ginormous, and they gave us plenty of them alongside very fresh limes, which I appreciated. The bowl itself came loaded with meat--they definitely weren't skimping to save money here. The meat-to-noodle ratio felt great, and every bite actually had substance instead of leaving me fishing around for toppings. As for the broth, I landed somewhere in the middle. It wasn't quite as clear or light as I personally prefer, leaning toward a fattier, milkier undertone that almost reminded me of a Vietnamese pho take on tonkotsu. The flavor itself was undeniably very good, but the richness may have been a bit too much for me personally. One way I usually judge how much I love a pho broth is whether I want to sip the bowl down to the very end, and this one wasn't quite light enough for me to want to do that. I've had richer and deeper pho flavors elsewhere, but I still appreciated the flavor profile here and could absolutely see why this place is so popular. It feels hearty, comforting, and satisfying in a way that clearly resonates with many people. Despite how packed the restaurant was, the atmosphere ended up being surprisingly pleasant. Service moved very quickly, which honestly impressed me given how busy everything felt. Even with the crowd, I didn't dislike the spacing or setup at all--the restaurant still felt comfortable, and the sound of people enjoying their food all around added to the lively, welcoming energy rather than making it feel overwhelming. Overall, Pho Phong Lưu ended up being one of those places where I completely understood the hype, even if it didn't become my personal favorite pho spot. While the broth leaned richer than my preference, I still enjoyed the experience and definitely look forward to trying other dishes next time.

The soup was pretty good but I wished it was a little more herbal in my opinion. It was very easy to eat and the meat cuts were quite delicious. The inside of the establishment is clean and full of natural light which I loved. One thing I wished they had was egg noodles and that it could be substituted out with rice noodles BUT regardless, it was quite delicious and I can see why many people love this place.

I didn't get a soup spoon to drink the broth, but had to drink it like cereal from a bowl. The tofu was tasty as well. Very yummy. But it also has egg and scallions and pate; overall the combo is satisfying. Separate from takeout, we decided to go for an early dinner. Their Crab Vermicelli Stir Fry is surprisingly sweet, with sweetness as a prominent flavor. It features plenty of crab bits. I also grabbed a Skillet Combo. It came with two runny side up eggs, pate, two types of cured pork, beef gravy, and a handful of cilantro. The baguette came on the side, as did the mixed salad of lettuce and tomato. The salad had some dried shrimp, fish sauce, and a slightly sweet dressing. The restaurant itself is located in the Chinatown Center on N Lamar. It's a small corner shop. Lots of mirrors and glass. And honestly it's better than any fancy restaurant out there. I love the amount of plants in the space and the TV plays cooking videos and it's so nice to watch while waiting for your food! Speaking of waiting for your food, the food comes out super quick! Within 1 minute of ordering my drink, it came out! And a couple minutes after follows the food. The service is amazing as well, the servers are super sweet and are very quick to serve you and get what you need. The menu offers a bunch of things, appetizers, main dishes, desserts, and the drinks! I love how the desserts and drinks are also Vietnamese (most of the time I notice restaurants tend to have the basic selection of fountain drinks and desserts, but this restaurant has a wide variety of drinks and desserts so you can try something new every time you come here!) Most of all, there's a bunch of vegan dishes which I absolutely love. The food is always delicious I've been trying the vegan dishes recently and I love them a lot (as someone who doesn't like vegan dishes normally)! The chicken pho is also so delicious it tastes better than I make it at home! So much flavor. The drinks are so good as well. They also give you a big portion and I normally have leftovers, but the portion size is amazing for the price that you pay. It's definitely more affordable and such a bang for your buck. This is definitely a spot to try and trust me, you'll probably fall in love! If I was an Austin tourist I would definitely hit up this restaurant. I could go on and on about this restaurant.

It's a pretty small restaurant, but there are a lot of tables. You can either wait and be seated or if you find any free spots, you can sit down and they will come and give you a menu. I ordered their bum bo hue $16 and it was delicious. The broth was to die for. It was super flavorful and the spice and salt levels were just right. Not too salty, not too spicy.
