Excellent little restaurant/pub not far from central Berlin. The staff couldn't have been friendlier and were very helpful with their recommendations. The pig knuckle which was what I came for was excellent! Super tender and flavorful with unctuous fatty goodness. It paired excellent with mustard and a slightly sweet sauerkraut. I wanted to try the potato dumpling and they were happy to make a side dish so I could try it. Also tried their Hackethals lager which was very good a dark and slightly sweet caramelized lager and also a foussebasse (lemonade soda kind of drink). The apple streudel was ok, nice apple and pretty presentation, but flavor was just ok for me. Really pleasant dinner in a very cute pub and really excellent staff. Loved it! Outstanding neighborhood eatery and bar. This was, without a doubt, the best restaurant we visited in Berlin. It was within walking distance from the hotel, and good reviews convinced us to give it a try. We arrived just before the kitchen closed, but they greeted us graciously and sat us for dinner. Food was outstanding, but that was only the beginning. After our meal of sausages followed by desert and accompanied with their own beer, we sat a while longer and met the owners Frank and Nils, and a couple of regulars, Andrea and Anton. Our night of a quick dinner turned into an evening of great conversation and drinks with new friends. This was a fantastic evening, made only better by Frank offering us taste tests of the sauce he was preparing for the next days venison. OUTSTANDING! DO NOT pass this up. Hidden in Mitte, this small German pub is nevertheless popular with tourists. The food is traditional and good, the menu handwritten on a board seems tricky to decipher but the friendly waitress is eager to offer to translate it for you. The décor is rustic, like the food, and quite charming. Don't be deterred by the man behind the bar, he's the owner and seems to want us to realize he's in charge. Their dark beer is a little on the sweet side, like the sauerkraut, but tasty. They also have a few wines and yummy desserts. read more

Came here with my family hoping to enjoy some authentic German food. We were excited to try this place because I read the good reviews. Nope! They took one look at us and said "no, no room for you" I clearly saw multiple empty tables too. The host/waiter was so rude and left a bad taste in our mouth. This is a very unwelcoming restaurant. Last night in Berlin for a work trip and wanted to close it out in a less touristy part of town and at a more historic and genuine Lo oval German pub. The write ups on Hackethals seemed right on point so I jumped on the U6 train and headed over for a late dinner. Tucked into a residential neighborhood in a quiet street was this modest looking old pub, microbrewery and restaurant. They apparently get enough tourists that they have staff who could help translate the daily changing menu which was posted oN the wall as a chalk board. Approx 6-7 entrees, and 4-5 starters and deserts posted. Plenty of beers on tap including one of their own was a nice touch. I ended up w a pork dish w veggies and slaw and salad and fried potatoes and it was fine. For dessert I had the apple strudel which was seemingly like warmed up store bougHt w ice cream. With a large beer I spent about $31 EU including tip. Solid meal but there are better out there. If nearby worth a meal. read more

This cozy, family run restaurant was the highlight of our trip to Berlin. Candles on the table and huge, welcoming bar made for the perfect atmosphere. We'd return to Berlin just for a meal here. The food: the venison special with potato dumplings was the best we ever had. Tender meat and hearty portion! The sausage with mash potatoes and sauerkraut was also so tasty. Amazing food. The drinks: reasonably priced beer, whiskey, and copious amounts of vodka shots made for a very fun evening. The service: beyond amazing. The father/son team are so friendly. The son translated the all-German menu for us, provided spot on recommendations, and was attentive the entire night. If you're a rude/generally unhappy person, don't come here and ruin it with an unfair review. But if you want an authentic German meal, book a table immediately! It's a neighborhood spot with just a few tables so best to call ahead. Lastly, we had a few shots on the house and they were absolutely not on our bill. My son and I had two enjoyable experiences here. We came in late on a Monday after the kitchen was closed. We had had a good but tiring day touring by car and the owner and his son were very kind to a confused American and his teenage son. Our second visit was more relaxed and we enjoyed the spätzle, pig's knuckle, and their excellent lager. The apple strudel was a nice finish. The food is very good, the atmosphere is great, and the owners are wonderful. This was a great part of our visit to Berlin. read more

This should have been a 5* review: delicious tradition food, lovely venue, fine homemade beer and great attentive service by young waiter Alex. But after a wonderful first night with my friend, with a free shot to end our meal, our second night was ruined by pure greed. We had several unordered house shots delivered to our table throughout the night and even the owner Frank and Alex joined us to wish us cheers and ask for us to write a good review on Trip Advisor which we were more than happy to do. How friendly! Merry with alcohol we got the bill, with all the shots nicely itemised and charged. We mentioned it to Alex who was equally horrified but did they come off the bill? No. The owner Frank was pretty quiet after that. We left good tips both nights and, like the first night, assumed the shots were on the house and a way of saying thanks for being good customers. Nope, we were conned and ripped off. So, I'm giving this place 1*. The worst kind of dishonesty that's left a nasty taste in our mouths and a place I'd say avoid unless you like being taken for a couple of mugs. It makes us feel so angry and exploited. Such short sightedness... Charging €8.00 for shots that we never asked for has left two well-paying customers fuming angry and never to return again. read more

Decent food, but wow, the service and the people who own the place are total jerks! We were visiting for Christmas and this place was recommended by our hotel. Could not have had worst treatment, but we found that to be the norm in all of Berlin. Not sure why so many people love Berlin. It is filled with angry, rude people and this restaurant only solidified that feeling we got while touring the city. Such a wasted vacation, to have spent it in such a miserable city. read more

Fantastic dinner - best food we had in Berlin and an equally as amazing waitstaff. Arrived on a Tuesday night 15 minutes after opening and scored the last table available (would recommend getting a reservation). Got a Jarosover draft beer per recommendation of the waiter and it was great. We are English speakers so the waiter described each menu item to us in English (since it's listed in German). Ordered venison in a red wine reduction with red cabbage and potato dumplings. Also ordered pork sausages over sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Finished the meal with an apple strudel. OMFG! This is my favorite spot in all of Germany (Munich included). I came here on a whim because it was a close stop on our train ride home. We ordered two gigantic beers and (I kid you not) 4 entrees for 2 people. The waiter thought we were crazy! We ate almost all of it. I had the german specials of beef in a wine reduction and the veal liver. The waiter said they were his top two choices on the menu! The menu is only in German and hand written on a chalk board. It changes daily, but the two meals I mentioned above are permanent :-). The place has a quiet vibe. A lot of locals eat there. The waiter knew plenty of folks by name. It was a very charming atmosphere. When I return (because Berlin is that amazing) I will eat here at least twice. read more

A good place for some yummy beer. I stumbled across this place in my world tour of Germany. I didn't know what to expect but the menu looks old-fashioned and quite good. Just a word of advice the entire menu was in German so it's good to know some German if you ever wind up here. I had their house special beer which is really good. I ordered the duck leg with some potato ball looking thing and some red cabbage type vegetable. I don't remember the name of the dish because it was in German but it came highly recommended from my server. All in all a good place to go that's outside the beaten path it was kind of hidden in the night and kind of scary to go there but definitely check it out if you're in the area. read more

This is my 3rd trip to Berlin and I have eaten at many places, but this is by far my favorite restaurant in town. I came on Tuesday and had their beef dish cooked in wine for 4 hours and absolutely loved it. I came back today and had a veal liver that blew my mind. This place was one of the highlights of our trip! We stopped in here on our tour through Europe and we were lucky this restaurant wasn't packed out! The place is small and intimate, very cozy. The prices are very reasonable, and drinks were priced cheaper than anything we're used to in the states. The food was amazing but I have to say the owner & his son who work there make the place. To mention the food we had first- my boyfriend had the schnitzel and I had the goulash, the goulash was savory and filling, both were so great. They have a house beer which is sweet and amazing as a finisher. After dinner we had a few(many) drinks starting with martinis which were AMAZING, the owner is truly a magician behind the bar. I love martinis and he made the best one I'd ever had. Between my boyfriend and myself we sampled the bourbon, rum, red wine, and rose wine. Our waiter recommended each drink after talking with us and figuring out what we liked, having that level of service was amazing. We'd planned on having a quick dinner and going home but that night we enjoyed talking with our waiter and the owner so much we must have spent 4ish hours there. We'd planned on going back for a second night because we were told there was going to be a venison stew but ended up leaving Berlin a day early-we we're both sad we didn't get to come back for a second night, this place has great company, food, and drinks! On our March visit to Berlin we found this fabulous gem of an eatery within walking distance of our apartment. Great traditional food -- highly recommend the sausages & sauerkraut, and berries and cream for dessert! Trocken Weisswein is great (altho you can't get a bad glass of wine in Germany) and of course the beer is wonderful. Extremely friendly and inviting place. Wish we'd had time to go twice. read more

Similar to Steve M. (another posting here) The server and owner attempted to rip us off (apparently Steve M did get ripped off). As new tourist to Berlin, this was the first restaurant we went to. My friend ordered a whiskey and coke and was charged a double even though the quantity was not a double nor did my friend order a double. I ordered a water as I didn't have a good feeling about this place. The waiter was friendly enough but listed the dinner options without mentioning prices. My friend and I decided not to eat there and asked for the bill. When we received the bill we noticed that there were two items that were not ours and that the restaurant wanted to charge us for the additional drinks that we never had. After disputing the bill and claiming our case the charges were taken off. Had we not looked at the bill closely we would've had to pay double. Not cool. Welcome to Berlin. read more
