We stumbled upon this place near our hotel and like it so much, we went back for another lunch and twice for late night drinks. Excellent daily specials and solid simple menu with tasty German food. Staff were super friendly. We had excellent salads, schnitzel, and some specials such as stuffed cabbage with warm potatoes, also had a German version of cheesy stuffed manicotti. I highly recommend and will return on my next trip to Berlin. If I lived in the area I would make this my place to go. read more

Went back but never again. The place was dilapidated, empty. A weird guy in shorts and a ragged t-shirt hanging around seemed to know the waitress but created a decidedly louche atmosphere. Echoing another review, this place feels more of a local spot than a tourist highlight, but that was exactly what I wanted for dinner when I visited. The service is a bit slow, and the menu simple. We ordered the spatzle with lentils and sausage and vorspeisenteller (sample platter). For my palette, the spatzle was good but a bit plain and lacked seasoning. Simple German-style food of really solid quality and a very pleasant atmosphere. We split a flatbread and the cheese spaetzle and definitely felt like we had plenty of food. The goat cheese, walnut and pear flatbread had this weird sour cream sauce rather than your more traditional flatbread format. It was very rich and strange but very tasty. We were a bit confused but happy! The cheese spaetzle was very flavorful with strong garlic and onions, while also being so cheesy and satisfying! Plus it comes with a nice side salad so you feel a little less guilty. Service was slow, but the atmosphere was great and we appreciated taking the time for a longer dinner experience. Came here yesterday for breakfast to start off a full day in Berlin. The place definitely has a European hipster vibe but I enjoyed it! Check out the interesting decorations around the restaurant. Options for breakfast were limited but delicious. They offer 3 different full breakfast options for 8.5 euro: a sweet, a cheese based and a mixed that comes with bread, muesli and an assortment of cheese and/or jam. Although it doesn't look particularly hearty, we were stuffed by the end. If you aren't as hungry they also had a la cart options like scrambled eggs. Also the server was very nice and welcoming and even gave us the lowdown on the traditional winter foods in Germany which is apparently goose, potato balls and cabbage? Hopefully we will get to try that by the end of the trip. This place is still cash only and also remember to add a 10% tip to the check. read more

Went here for lunch today. I must say the food is absolutely amazing and trully authentic. Haven't had such a nice lunch for a long time. We ordered Schnitzel with potatoes cucumber salad and "Schäufle" with fried potatoes and Sauerkraut (cabbage) two very traditional dishes. Both meals were divine and to the point. We rounded the lunch with a nice desert up and ordered Kaiserschmarn. Wow. Regarding the service.. well.. that was the only part that was slightly disappointing because it was rather mediocre. They all seemed disinterested and that's a pity for a place with a great kitchen like this. But anyways. I can still recommend it. read more

This place was amazing! Quirky and cute on the corner in the very hip Mitte neighborhood. We split the pear, goat cheese, and walnut flammkuchen (thin pizza) and the on recommendation from a fellow yelper, the Geschmeltze Maultaschen mit schwäbischem Kartoffelsalat. This was basically a little pasta square layered with deliciously flavorful meat and fried, paired with a cold potato salad that was very well done. Topped our meal off with the cheesecake on special, which was presented beautifully and had a variety of toppings (raspberry, apricot, walnut) to fit your tastes. Very nice place with a really cozy feel to it and friendly staff. The food is very good as well! I had the spaetzle with cheese which came with a small side salad , and it was delicious, huge portion too! I couldn't even finish it! We also had a flammkuchen with bacon and onions to share and let me tell you, you absolutely have to get one, especially if you have never tried them! It was amazing! The staff is very attentive and they even helped me to choose a beer. The place has a black forest theme so there are antlers hanging on the walls, a coal stove in the middle of the room and the dark, wooden tables finish it off. Very nice meal for a very decent price and even tried a new snapps flavor!! We went to a lot of restaurants in Berlin, but this was hands down one of my favorite ones. It was better than the Michelin star restaurants. We accidentally stumbled into here after a day of walking. To be honest, i can't even tell you what we had & with correct spelling. Since I've only been living in Berlin for three months I'm still investigating Berlin's restaurants trying to find favourites in the different styles of cuisine on offer, and Berlin has numerous to offer. Last night's experiment was German, and I headed to Schwarzwaldstuben just off Oranienburger Staße. Very much a bar come restaurant the place was very busy on this Tuesday evening so I guess it may be packed at the weekend. The menu arrived in German with English translation which is welcome for this Auslander still trying to improve his German. The waitress was very friendly and kindly informed me das ist zu viel when I over ordered. Despite my large appetite I (thankfully) listened to her and changed my starter to their mixed started, which offered me the proposition of a variety of tastes, just what I should have ordered in the first place. I followed this with a Schweinschnitzel (breaded pork escalope) and Bratkartoffeln (roasted potatoes with onions). Both dishes were extremely tasty and fortunately the restaurant wasn't too smoky so I was able to enjoy their taste to the full. At EUR21 for the meal, plus vodka and bitter lemon, the meal wasn't cheap by Berlin standards. However the food and the venue were more than good enough to make me want to go back and try venison goulash that I almost ordered. read more

I got that with BratKarloffeln and the asparagus sou. The latter was a dream....till I found a fly in my soup. I was in Berlin for only 2 days, but I'm glad I went here to have a meal. Being a vegetarian, I expected it to be quite difficult to find any vegetarian options in Germany. However, this place did have some options for vegetarians. I ordered some maultaschen, which is kind of like a German take on ravioli. You could order it with meat or vegetarian; obviously I did the latter. At first when my meal was served, I received the wrong meal- I knew after I took a bite that there was meat in the meal- not good. I informed the waiter the order was incorrect, and within a reasonable time he brought the correct order. It was worth the wait, the maultaschen was delicious, came served with a small potato salad, and a leafy salad on the side. My entree was quite greasy (a lot of oil) and heavy, but eating the leafy salad helped. Of course, having some German beer was a good way to round out the meal. This place has a rustic feel to it, with some kitschy decor, but I liked it, I found it to be charming. I'd go back on my next return to Berlin. read more

Love love loved it... We found this restaurant on Yelp and were very impressed with the reviews so we decided to check it out for lunch. The place has a very nice and cozy atmosphere, gets lots of light, and has a hip and casual décor. We sat at the bar, most tables were taken. There were a lot of tourists there, but surprisingly, the place did not feel too touristy!! We ordered the pork schnitzel and the lentil with spaetzle and sausage. Absolutely delicious. Pair that with a great service and we were very happy with our experience. So happy that we came back the next morning for breakfast and we were oh so glad that we did. For 8 you get a large plate with a delicious oatmeal, an egg, some ham and salami, and fruit, if not more. The coffee is very good too. I'm giving this 3 stars, based on the service. It's super centrally located, and the decor was cozy, with selections of plush couches or sit down tables. The food was nice, a hearty spread of meats, cheeses, and fresh breads with *homemade* jams and a hard boiled egg for breakfast. My partner had some concoction of cheesy eggs and meat, and was pretty satisfied. We sat immediately, but took forever to order, and when I asked for some tap water, the waitress brought bottled water, for a lovely 4 euro, which was nearly the price of my breakfast. Really happy to have randomly found this place while wandering around Berlin ! It had actually been recommended by a couple of bloggers and it's really worth a stop. The decor is very cosy and inviting. The restaurant is very popular in the evening but if you haven't booked, you might still have room at the counter. The staff was very friendly and like in most places I've been to in Berlin, they won't rush you to finish your dinner and leave, even when the place gets more crowded. The specialty of the house : meals from Southern Germany like the Spätzle. And having friends from that side of the country who cook well, I can tell you that they were really good. If you prefer a meatier option, you can choose the Wiener Schnitzel. And if you don't have time for a dinner, feel free to have a drink by the bar and enjoy the setting ! read more

Solid delicious German food served in a cozy German Shabby Chic atmosphere. This was my friend's introduction to German food in Germany. Her grandmother grew up in Southern Germany so she had had her cooking. She ordered the Kasse Spatzle with fried onions and beer. I had the Beerlitzer Spargel (white asparagus) that was in season with hollandaise sauce. White asparagus is always a novelty for us Americans but the Germans adore it. They are thick and meaty with a very mild asparagus taste. Schwarzwaldstuben's were so tender without being soggy. The hollandaise was thick with butter and eggs and yum. Served along side were boiled new potatoes that were golden and packed with potato . I added a view shavings of real black forest ham. With a glass of riesling, it was gutt! read more

We really enjoyed our time at Schwarzwaldstuben. The food was a modern take on traditional German fare, which is precisely the sort of thing we wanted on our trip to Berlin. We both loved our meals and have made sure to add them to our repertoires at home! We arrived at a very busy time and hadn't booked, but the staff were very accommodating and made sure to find us a space. I would advise you probably call them in advance but they were so nice in getting us seated, we were very grateful. Unimaginative German food, very average service - but actually in a pretty good vibe establishment. Located in the happening Mitte part of Berlin, this place came up as no.4 on Yelp, but I am still scratching my head as to why? Reception was really slow, but warmed up a little with some pretty crappy attempts at German on my part. Pretty busy and a good crowd of patrons for an early dinner in an environment that is cosy, not too loud with some eclectic decor. Food was slow and bland, went for the German pizza starter on recommendation which was okay but I'll be tasting the onion for days. Roasted Beef was way overcooked, tough and served with spätzle and snow peas in a gravy sauce (yay...). Maybe this place has a better breakfast - but I doubt I will try, there are so many better options in Berlin. As a social hangout, I think this place rocks. Fantastic food and fantastic service. Schnitzel and flamm Kuchen were great. THe flammkuchen came loaded with bacon , bound to make anyone happy. They serve Augustiner helles, which i consider the best beer in the world, after years of trying out different beers. So they get extra points for that. read more
