If you read some of the reviews on TripAdvisor or even yelp, they are brutal. People didn't like the food, nor the service. My experience was completely different. I am doing this review as I eat to properly document my experience. If you think farm to table is a cliche think again at this restaurant. They are not lying to you when they say the simplicity of ingredients take center stage. First course: bread with accompaniment. Dense chewy rye bread made some bread god local to Berlin. Perfectly sour. The butter that comes with it is fantastic, and perhaps even better than Bordier. Which is saying a lot. They make it in house with local milk, and this batch is from July. It came with radicchio warm salad which was outstanding. Two raw carrots perfectly prepared with some of nut and butter sprinkle. I didn't think I would get excited over a raw carrot but it was so good. Next: squash and egg yolk custard. Very simply prepared with a bit of thyme. Extremely good. Texture was perfect. Next: the liver Spatzle: liver is incorporated into the dough. Very rich and silky and paired perfectly with the red from Alsace. So good. Next: Ceps and beechnut. Thanks to google, ceps are called penny button mushrooms and are in season now. Rich nutty flavor per google and that's exactly what I tasted .in fact it had an umami component to it which May be due to the pine needle beurre blanc that came with it. Outstanding! Next up: local organic chicken. Must be a heritage breed because it had that real chicken taste that mass produced chicken lacks. Omg. And I don't say that about chicken often but this was damn good. Crispy skin and all. Dessert: this is probably the best iteration of an apple dessert I ever had. On paper it sounds rather pedestrian. Apples and Greek yogurt? In real life it's an heirloom apple and brioche bread pudding with fresh young ginger, rich Greek yogurt ice cream and drizzled with fresh young ginger oil pressed from the ginger leaves. It is not all as it seems here at this veg forward restaurant. I never thought I would wax poetic about veggies but the creativity and effort of the kitchen combined with high caliber ingredients needs no sleight of hand to create something special. read more

We've informed about gluten-free preference of my wife. You mentioned that you noticed, but didn't bother even to propose gluten-free bread. 2. This guy, who drinks wine from my bottle... Who is he? Sous-chef? Sommelier? Does he have drinking problems? Have you ever been to any haute cuisine restaurants? Have you ever seen there that a waiter drinks not only after opening the bottle, but also in the middle of the dinner? Does he suspect that the wine became worse in last 20 minutes? And even after cork opening, he must smell, not drink!! 3. But let me go to the most important thing - food. The art of cuisine includes plating, combining sour/sweet/bitter/spicy tastes to build a unique experience. It is also a wonderful play with texture, a combination of soft and crunchy ingredients. Shouldn't I say that both plain out-of-season carrot and under-cooked pumpkin with egg yolk have nothing to do with that? Our whole experience was disgusting. My original intent had been to dine at nearby Tim Raue. As a party of one, I was hoping I could squeeze in without a reservation. No joy there. I asked them where to go and was told that Nobelhart & Schmutzig was a "one star" around the corner. Following Google maps I was confused as there was no signage I could see. I finally figured out the door to the restaurant and pushed the buzzer. Got a chuckle out of the "Shit Advisor" and "ANAL" stickers on the door. I was greeted shortly after and asked (begged) for a seat). The woman disappeared inside and came back a minute later and informed me how lucky I was. There was exactly one open chair at the massive square counter top. I was greeted by a sommelier and told him what I like in a wine. He brought out EXACTLY what I wanted though if you asked me to tell you what it was, I couldn't if my life depended on it. As the night progressed, I switched to the wine pairings with each course...well, technically not all wine. There were ciders and beers in the mix as well. All pairings were spot on, perfect. The service started almost immediately after my initial wine came and it was game-on. Each course was beautifully presented and I kid you not, they each had an emotional impact. This was the epitomy of a dining EXPERIENCE. It wasn't just dinner, it was a ride. I loved every course and wanted to lick my plate clean. I thoroughly enjoyed the people watching also. I believe I was the only solo diner as this was clearly a good spot for a romantic date. The staff was all highly trained, professional, and very "Berlin Cool". I won't even pretend to have the skills to describe the food or the preparation so I won't try. I'll just say that the main course of duck, I still don't fully understand it. I've never tasted anything quite like it and I have eaten at some exceptional restaurants. This place is as close to perfection as a dining experience can be as far as I'm concerned. Even though the flight time is around 14 hours, I'm seriously tempted to make a trip back to Berlin just to eat at Nobelhart & Schmutzig again. read more

You must eat here. The end. Jk not the end! We sat at the long u-shaped counter and had an incredible experience and by the end of the night my friend and I were best friends with the three groups next to us (a couple and two solo ladies). FUN. The guy in charge has such a fun, sassy attitude. The staff are all friendly and professional. And the food. Yeah, incredible. Something I especially liked was the no photo rule. Also that to start they ask you if you prefer something bitter or sweet to start. Bitter! They gave me the best vermouth I've ever had. There's a beverage pairing but it's the most flexible I've ever seen. It get organic and customized. Not stuffy or set in any way. We did ALL the recommended beverages and it was a fun adventure. People around us were more selective and drank way less. The staff were good at accommodating all the different preferences and personalities. AND the entrance is a unlabeled door with humorous stickers in it. I love that one of the top 50 restaurants in the world has a sticker that says anal on its front door. I thought I wasn't a fan of German food. This restaurant helped me realize I just never had GOOD German food before. I wan't able to take any pictures out of respect for the restaurant's wishes. The menu mentioned how the biggest tip for the staff would be to enjoy the dinner without any pictures and phones. I have to say, I was able to focus on my dinner and company more- a rarity in our social media driven world. The food was amazing! Some of the dishes were decent, but then some that absolutely wowed me. The most notable dish for me was the spatzle made with chicken liver, which was inspired by the sommelier's grandmother's recipe. It can't get more German than that! Another notable item from my meal was the bread. I nearly filled up on the bread alone! The house churned butter definitely added to the mouthfeel and flavor. The non- alcoholic pairing was great all the drinks were familiar yet complex. This restaurant tries to source most of its ingredients as local as possible, something I really appreciate. The best thing about this restaurant- they don't welcome AFD supporters which from an American's view means Nazis! I love how unapologetic this restaurant is. Sometimes you really have to wonder. I'd been wanting to try it out for what seems like years. Well, I finally bit the proverbial bullet and headed out there with balanced expectations. Quite frankly, I'd heard so much hype about it I wondered if it wasn't just an instagram opportunity for hipsters with more money than brains... anyway, here goes. The appetisers were chunks of sourdough bread with butter and Leberwurst. All fine but really all that fuss about them making their own butter? Then it was all downhill from there. At first I thought oh no! I caught it! The virus symptoms! I can't taste anything. Can't smell anything! I was soon disappointed NOT to have caught it. Food actually was uninspiring muddled and tasteless. 7 courses most of which were made out of weeds plucked out of the garden and with something that was pretentiously called a slow cooked pork belly and was as tough as a shoe sole and quite frankly far less tasty (not that I ever ate a shoe, but I actually started considering the option). Also, eating a head of grilled lettuce should be a refreshing experience but when you get that horrible grittiness between your teeth, I don't care where that lettuce grew up or the name of the picker. Learn how to wash vegetables! Ok. The wine list is impressive, but then again, not sure anyone needs 150 pages of wines to chose from, especially when the sommelier is being rushed about and can't take the time to advise and discuss. Nevertheless a wonderful champagne and Pinot noir saved the evening (hence the 2 stars) I left €500 for two on the counter and thought that was - regardless of the stupid price - the worst meal I've had in ages. So yes. If you have more money than brains and only concerned in adding a picture of (one) asparagus in the middle of a plate to your instagram account, please do rush over. Nobelhart & Schmutzig was a fantastic experience. First when you get there, it's quite enigmatic. No sign, just big windows with white curtains and a little plaque with the name discreetly put against the glass. From the street you'd think it's a nail salon or something like that. Then you ring the bell and you discover Billy. Tall, big eyes, big hair, big voice, energetic, loud and funny. The room is dark and wide, a large " bar " for about 30 eaters and in the middle the cooks working on the only menu which is changed every morning according to the products they receive from their selected producers. That's the concept they created five years ago : make Berlin food from seasonal products exclusively coming from Berlin and around Berlin. Like Noma, you will say ; yes but even more. Noma used ingredients from the whole Scandinavia and Nordic countries. Here it's even more local. If they don't have that product close to Berlin, it won't be in the menu. For beverages of course they have some from further but a lot of German wines, ciders, beers, schnaps, etc in a wine list of 100+ pages like I had never seen before. Everything you can wish for (Ganevat, Guiberteau, Dagueneau, Mas Jullien, VxTelegraphe, Souhaut, Horizon, etc Etc all the big ones and many many less known but interesting ones). Quite amazing. The menu was a total delight. Mostly végétal components and lots of emotion from beginning to the end. I cried on the tomatoe and leek dish and was transported several times to total bliss through the 12 courses including apps and the " departure cannelé " you get as you walk out the door (I stole one before as a joke and took a bite but Billy saw it and ate the rest !! Haha). Nobelhart & Schmutzig was my best food experience in Europe this year after Noma. It was amazing and it's worth the trip just to eat there. It's fucking great and fucking fun !!! read more

I tried to have an open mind, but I'm not understanding the love for this place. It was interesting. But not one dish that I'd want to have again. Maybe the fish or the asparagus if I must choose. First two courses - eel covered with sprouts, green leaves with bread crumbs - eaten without utensils. Pretty messy to have. This may be the only eatery that lists bread as a course. Hmm. The main - chicken done in a very regular way. At least that's how it tasted to me. Fresh, yes. Salty, also yes. Black pudding with potato soup - another salty one. We left most in the bowls, the waitress didn't care to know why. There was a cheese with oats thing. A fish with quick sous vide or blanching. Some green wheat grass icee thing on woody rhubarb strips. Ice cream with schnapps. All ingredients were fresh and local and healthy for us. Just not very tasty. Which, isn't it the most important thing in a meal? Service was mixed - detailed explanations of how each dish was made, and we appreciated lots of water refills. But no one ever asked how we liked the food - maybe we were just supposed to love them? I'd been wowed by The French Laundry, I've enjoyed Le Bernadin, welcomed everything at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, even found delicious food with the odd service at La Pergola, and very much liked the €3 döner for lunch today. A ring of the doorbell and I was led into what was one of the most positive dining experiences I have had in Berlin. Read the other reviews and believe it, if you want to come here and be lead on a journey where the chef takes the wheel, you will love it. If you are a fussy eater and want things modified because you know what you like, this is probably not the place for you. Though with that said all the courses were not to my liking, for example I thought the chicken skin was too salty and the last course with the malt was not my cup of tea. However for the most part the meal was delicious, thank goodness the last course is take away I was so stuffed by the end. The menu itself is 80 Euros and you can get a drink pairing for 70 Euros more and I recommend the unfiltered Lambrusco aperitif for an extra 9. The pairings are spot on and delicious. The service is friendly and explains both drinks and food, although it did feel a bit robotic when you see the sommelier doing the exact same script to all the guests. For that I would say this is more 4.5 stars, however something worth doing. read more

In the beginning I felt a little sad that I couldn't take pictures then, but in the end I was glad that I hadn't been snapping away with my phone. The food was outstanding, yet so simple. Clean, honest and simple plates - beautiful and just the way I like it. Nothing is being put on the plate simply because it looks good, but only because it makes sense regarding the flavours and textures. We had a glass of dry Lambrusco at first, but we then moved over to the juices that they make themselves - amazing. The Beetroot/maltjuice was my favorite. The only thing to put a finger on was the presentation of the food - HOWEVER it is important to note, that this wasn't an issue at all, we just missed a little passion. I don't know if this was because the food was explained in English instead of german. One of the desserts were presented by a female chef; she explained how they had made the components for the dish with such passion and emotion that it was difficult not to get carried away - it would have been amazing if all the waiters presented the food like this :-) Billy is a great host/sommelier - a pleasure to watch him and all of the chefs working. read more

It is high time that exquisite, yet down-to-earth dining, wine pairing and chatting with the artists who make it happen, is now available to mere mortals. Berlin's Nobelhart and Schmutzig have created the wondrous world in which this happens. Their incredible dining experience starts from the moment one approaches the absolutely uninviting shuttered front visage of the restaurant on the street. Hesitantly, one tries the door - locked - then presses a lonely looking buzzer. It opens after a moment and, as if entering another dimension, guests are brought into one of the warmest and most inviting cooking and dining atmospheres ever created by a restaurant concept. While carefully selected, relaxing LPs spin away on a turntable, the diners sit at a finely finished, and adequately wide wood dining bar which frames the open kitchen activities. The lighting is perfect for seeing your food and otherwise the lighting is gentle and in the best sense, shadowy and intimate. The kitchen itself - which is only about ten feet away - is well lit and the focus of the night's entertainment. The food-smart, engaging and attentive staff artfully combine the best local herbs, fruits, vegetables, fish and meat of this earth. The guest is encouraged to review one of the most amazing wine and beer (and schnapps!) lists ever presented in a restaurant. But thankfully, diners can relax in the experienced hands of the staff's suggested wine pairings which strategically change with every course. The whole dining experience takes place in a nest of intimacy in which one can enjoy the evening with one's own dining partner(s), as well as share in the experience with other diners (as I did). The well-informed, amiable and hip staff are not intrusive, but always there to give you some interesting information about the origins of the food and recipes (they make their own butter). Each staff member contributes to the guest's appreciation of the thought and care put into the night's amazing food and wine offerings. All staff, including the cooks, pass by and have a quick chat, present a course or pour more wine, before the night is over. The quiet grace and humour with which these people entertain their guests made me feel like I was happily thrust into a world existing exclusively for sharing a passion for high standard, off beat and unusual food and wine. The aromatic and diverse ten courses unfold at a casual pace. The cool and unruffled cooks and servers never looked rushed or harassed and the guests merely wait for the next fabulousness to savor and swallow. It was almost heartbreaking to know the magic was about to end when the last dessert course was served. This was a tough "OK" rating to give. The management and staff are clearly making an effort to do something new and interesting, and in many ways they succeed. Bar seating around an open kitchen is great, the server/cooks are mostly chatty and interactive with diners - overall a promising concept. But at 8-10 (or a few more?) courses for the fixed menu, there were more misses than I could justify giving 4 or 5 stars for. I might recommend to others for the experience, especially if they're the type who enjoy chatting with chefs about their food, but I would not want to risk the fail-rate of the dishes I had on the night I was there again. Specifically, we were unimpressed by a glass of ... I don't know, pumpkin-infused water (or tea?) that had the color of soup, but none of the texture or flavor. One of the final courses, and maybe the only one that was mostly meat-centric, was a tough, rubbery overcooked cube of duck that had me questioning whether I even wanted a second or third bite. A few other dishes were too heavy on concept, not enough on the flavor, and came out bland. There were some hits though, especially with the dishes that used both meat and veggie elements. I assume the menu changes regularly so maybe there's hope for a more flavorful experience than what we had to match the impressive concept and comfortable ambiance that we did enjoy. read more

Everyone took so much pride in their work, from the sommelier, who introduced us to some very special wines and beers to pair with the courses, to the cooks who brought out and explained every course. Absolutely amazing! Made a reservation about 2 weeks in advance. Arrived promptly at 7 pm. The restaurant is directly in front of the tube station stairwell to the street. The front door is always locked so you must ring the doorbell upon which you will be warmly greeted and ushered into a truly impressive setting. 10 courses, pre-fixe dinner service lasted us about 2:45. Enjoyed a wonderful ale called red oat ale, amazing creamy texture and flavor. Would gladly pay 100+ euros or more for this amazing dining experience. Each course was explained in detail as it was served. Due to the proximity of our seats by the kitchen we were served multiple courses directly by the head chef and owner which was a real treat. read more

What a delightful, fun, interactive dinner this was! The set up of the restaurant in a big U around the kitchen is awesome. And the service was impeccable. Billy (co-owner) will come around and suggest a drink to start you off (champagne for me, a lovely german wit for my boyfriend) and then explain the dining experience you're about to embark on. And he'll continue to check in with you through out the meal. Its 10 courses (-ish!) and should you want it theres a pairing for each course. We sat down at 6:45 and left at 9:15pm, so a 2.5 hr dinner. They explain each course as its presented to you and how its intended to be consumed (spoon, hands, etc...) The dishes were inventive, local, and delicious; to me 80euro seemed to be quite reasonable for the quality of the meal. Theres a no phones rule, so I don't have any pics to share, but trust me, they were all little masterpieces. Definitely check this place out when in Berlin, before it becomes too difficult to snag a reservation! read more
