While we wanted to sit outside, due to the construction next to the seating area, we went inside. After reviewing the menu, I went with the Crispy Knuckle of Pork - 1kg(2.2lb). This is big enough to share with 2-3 people. Others in the party went with Roast of Pork and some other dishes that I can't recall now :) The service was good - typical German style... expect to wait a bit and yeah, German's aren't in hurry, so sit back, relax and enjoy your food. The beer was awesome, my favorite was the cabbage salad. As for the Knuckle - the size will impress you, but was disappointed with the dish. The skin was super crispy and nice, but be careful when you eat it, otherwise you might knock out some teeth. The meat outside the knuckle were dry and over cooked unfortunately. I ended up eating about 1/2 of it, mainly inside of the knuckle. Great for beer, conversation, food was decent.

We came to this restaurant two nights in a row. They open till midnight which provides great flexibility for us. The food is authentic and delicious, the service is efficient and awesome, the beer is amazing from its parent company which is going to be 700 years old by 2028. I don't know why it was ranked 3.5 on Yelp which is not a fair rating. I will surely come again when I visit Berlin!

This is a chain restaurant started at Munich, all the dishes are southern. We had the fried pork knuckle at Cologne , we ordered the same here, it tasted very good. the mushroom was also good. The pork knuckle was big enough for 2 persons, so we did not finish.

Light, friendly, just a typical German beer hall in the middle of Berlin. I came here for my liter of beer, something I like to do once a year when on an adventure. The draft beers were great. I went for Augustine Hell, the best beer on the menu, according for our server. My travel buddy tried the Augustiner Edelstoff, a creamier light beer that breathes of adventures to come. The ham and cheese plate comes with an amazing amount of root vegetables which really breaks up the beer. Overall, I'd highly recommend this place as it's fun, friendly, cute, and worth a visit.

You have got to try the pig hock - very crispy skin and delicious! I love that moist fatty areas if it. The potato dumplings that came along w it was delicious as well. We walked in without a reservation and the host made it possible for us to get a table. Dessert of an apple strudel was also delicious (although they did forget about us since they were so busy)

I think the star was the Beer...goes by the name of Hell. It was fine, fine, fine and I don't even drink alcohol, but I usually regurg beer taste- not this one. We also came for the Pork Knuckle for the hubby. For me it was ok to taste, but he loved it! My currywurst was alright, too, you know, I did not dislike it. I was just curious if it tasted like curry; it was tomato based, more like marinara. The wait staff seemed to be used to tourists because this was the only place we've been where food came relatively fast and waiting for the bill was shorter than most. Europeans know how to relax and enjoy their meals while holding perhaps a meaningful conversation. Whereas Americans tend to move from one task to another including a meal, then relax.

The Yelp rating of 3-1/2 stars does not paint a just picture of the place. Augustiner should be a solid 4 to 4-1/2 stars. Quickly glancing through some of the reviews, the issue seems to be a misunderstanding of the German beer hall culture. This is a beer hall so please don't expect service like an American fine dining restaurant. Germans (and most Europeans) are very laid back, and especially in a beer hall, no one is in any hurry to go anywhere. So don't expect quick service. Just sit back, relax, and soak in the environment. Your server also won't check back with you after food is delivered. If you need anything, just flag them down. This place was always super packed every night we passed by it, and it was a local favorite. The atmosphere was lively and chill; the vibes were authentically German. I couldn't help but order a full liter of beer and lived my German life, at least for the moment. PORK KNUCKLE: This German signature dish was close to perfect. The skin was so crispy that when I sank my teeth into it, the skin just crumbled and melted in my mouth. The meat was tender, moist, and flavorful. The Bavarian cabbage that accompanied the knuckle was delicious. I like that it was only slightly acidic, had just enough tartness but was not overwhelming. AUGUSTINER SAUSAGE: Germany is the country of sausages and I was determined to sample as many different types as I could on this trip. This is a coarse and meaty sausage which was rich in flavor and had a good blend of herbs and spices. HELL: Augustiner, just like most beer halls, brews their own beer in wood barrels, and I highly recommend "Hell" which is a Pilsner beer that is crisp, a little dry, slightly bitter, and goes perfectly well with a pork knuckle. This was without a doubt one of the best beers that I've ever had. Who knows beer heaven is actually in hell...

We had a traditional Apple strudel served with Bourbon vanilla sauce and curry wurst The place is a Bavarian-style beer hall with large windows. It was empty inside when we ate. The staff overcharged us but came back towards the end apologizing and offering us the overpaid difference

I love Augustiner, I'd go to them all if I could so was jazzed when we came upon this one. I'd say was just OK, it was late so that might have added to it, but just an ok experience. I think our waiter wanted to go home, despite being open for another couple of hours, but we got a couple of beers and felt good about it. The beer is the best in Germany, so if you're not leaving Berlin be sure to stop in for a Helles.

An upscale but authentic beer hall right pouring Oktoberfest beer and serving schweinaxe right next to the Berlin Hilton? I got lucky. The place was packed but by myself, a seat at the bar was sufficient.

The ale, could it really be called Hell?, was quite good.

Real good food and excellent service. As two vegetarians, we found the food excellent with a good range of puddings.

We came here after having been turned away by an Indonesian restaurant that was "full for the night". We are so glad that fate brought us here instead of that Indonesian restaurant!! What were we even thinking anyway -- forget the Indonesian food, get the local specialities!! Ordered the schnitzel as well as the meatballs and both were executed perfectly. Schnitzel was hot and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside -- not overly salty either. Meatballs were juicy and packed with flavor from the minced onions that they had mixed in. The beer (we ordered a Pilsner) was the best that we had tried in all of the Berlin and Dresden restaurants that we visited. I believe it is from some small private brewery affiliated with the restaurant somehow. Whatever they are doing, they are doing it right, so definitely order the house beer. Super cozy seating (you'll probably be sharing a table with other guests) and packed all night long but amazing vibes and casual comfort food. Would come back if I ever visit Berlin again!

Walking in the door gives you the feeling of dining in a Bavarian beer hall where there are plenty of locals enjoying the atmosphere. For us tourists, photos are included for most of the menu selections. I tried their signature dish: knuckle with cabbage and a potato dumpling. Even the half portion was huge! The veal schnitzel and steak entrees were also delicious. My server spoke little English, so knowledge of German would be a plus if dining here. The restaurant seems to be known for their beer and has quite a selection, however, a smaller wine menu is also available. I would definitely recommend making a reservation or coming early. As my friends and I were leaving, the line for entry was out the door.

Inside, the design leans toward a hybrid of a traditional German restaurant and modern luxury: dark woods, crisp table settings, and ambient lighting create an upscale but comfortable atmosphere suitable for all occasions ranging from date nights, celebratory dinners, or refined travel meals. The general vibe feels more sophisticated than casual tourist spots, with a bustling (yet not overwhelming) ambiance. Patrons range from international tourists to locals grabbing a drink after work, and a cosmopolitan mix of languages echoes throughout the space. After a 4-hour walking tour of Berlin, our group of eight was hungry for a hearty German meal. The same morning, we made a reservation for our party of 8 for 6:30pm later that night, and we appreciated the fact that the reservation process for large parties is easy and convenient. Additionally, When we arrived at the restaurant, we were immediately seated at a large table, and our waiter kindly directed us to a QR code with a translated English menu complete with pictures. The menu itself is extensive, with a range of options (from the more familiar pretzels and schnitzel to German classics like Pork Knuckle and Munich Bratwurst). Our server was charismatic and friendly, joking with us and guiding us through his favorites on the menu. When it came time to order, he asked us if we could order in the dishes' real German names (which we subsequently butchered), and he graciously corrected our pronunciation and explained any questions we had about some of the more traditional items. Some members of our party ordered their Ofenwarme Brezn mit Fassbutter (Pretzel with Warm Butter, €3,90): a generously-sized pillowy pretzel, generously salted and served with a creamy knob of decadent butter. For my entree, I selected the Halbe Haxe (€17.80), which is a half portion of crispy pork knuckle with Bavarian sauerkraut and a bread dumpling. For being a half portion, this dish was absolutely huge (with the bone, the knuckle was almost the size of my head!). The exterior skin had been wonderfully crisped up, almost like a German chicharron, whereas the interior was a mix of shreddable "pulled-pork"-like meat marbled with succulent fat, all served atop a rich, savory gravy. The Bavarian sauerkraut had a slight tang to contrast the decadence of the dish, and the bread dumpling was dense, yet soaked up the gravy perfectly. This was the tastiest dish I sampled during my time in Berlin, and certainly a great value as well. From asking my friends, other great plates included their Saftiger Schweinsbraten vom Schopf (€19.90 - a roast pork dish with bread dumplings, potato dumplings, gravy, and Bavarian sauerkraut; very similar to the Halbe Haxe but with what seemed like pork loin), 3 ECHTE Kalbsfleischpflanzer (€21.40 - three succulent veal meatballs with mashed potatoes, gravy, and buttered onions), and Handgeschabte Käsespätzle (€17.40 - homemade cheese noodles with mountain cheese and pear, topped with fried onions and served with a side salad; basically a bougee Bavarian mac and cheese, and a great vegetarian option). Two members of our party also ordered their Ausgezogener Apfelstrudel (€8.60), which was a sumptuous apple strudel with perfectly al-dente apples, flaky pastry, and warming spices, served with ice cream and a caramel-like sauce. In terms of price point, Maximilians sits in the moderate to premium range for Berlin restaurants: obviously pricier than your average beer hall or currywurst stand, but fitting for its polished service, urban location, elevated cuisine (with huge portions, might I add), as well as its large audience of tourists. If you're ever in the area, I would highly recommend Maximilians, and I'll certainly be back to sample some of their other colossal dishes!
