Restaurant Maximilians offers an elevated (and perhaps more tourist-friendly) take on Bavarian classics, with a polished exterior that draws you into a refined yet friendly dining environment. Inside, the design leans toward a hybrid of a traditional German restaurant and modern luxury: dark woods, crisp table settings, and ambient lighting create an upscale but comfortable atmosphere suitable for all occasions ranging from date nights, celebratory dinners, or refined travel meals. The general vibe feels more sophisticated than casual tourist spots, with a bustling (yet not overwhelming) ambiance. Patrons range from international tourists to locals grabbing a drink after work, and a cosmopolitan mix of languages echoes throughout the space. After a 4-hour walking tour of Berlin, our group of eight was hungry for a hearty German meal. The same morning, we made a reservation for our party of 8 for 6:30pm later that night, and we appreciated the fact that the reservation process for large parties is easy and convenient. Additionally, When we arrived at the restaurant, we were immediately seated at a large table, and our waiter kindly directed us to a QR code with a translated English menu complete with pictures. The menu itself is extensive, with a range of options (from the more familiar pretzels and schnitzel to German classics like Pork Knuckle and Munich Bratwurst). Our server was charismatic and friendly, joking with us and guiding us through his favorites on the menu. When it came time to order, he asked us if we could order in the dishes' real German names (which we subsequently butchered), and he graciously corrected our pronunciation and explained any questions we had about some of the more traditional items. Some members of our party ordered their Ofenwarme Brezn mit Fassbutter (Pretzel with Warm Butter, €3,90): a generously-sized pillowy pretzel, generously salted and served with a creamy knob of decadent butter. For my entree, I selected the Halbe Haxe (€17.80), which is a half portion of crispy pork knuckle with Bavarian sauerkraut and a bread dumpling. For being a half portion, this dish was absolutely huge (with the bone, the knuckle was almost the size of my head!). The exterior skin had been wonderfully crisped up, almost like a German chicharron, whereas the interior was a mix of shreddable "pulled-pork"-like meat marbled with succulent fat, all served atop a rich, savory gravy. The Bavarian sauerkraut had a slight tang to contrast the decadence of the dish, and the bread dumpling was dense, yet soaked up the gravy perfectly. This was the tastiest dish I sampled during my time in Berlin, and certainly a great value as well. From asking my friends, other great plates included their Saftiger Schweinsbraten vom Schopf (€19.90 - a roast pork dish with bread dumplings, potato dumplings, gravy, and Bavarian sauerkraut; very similar to the Halbe Haxe but with what seemed like pork loin), 3 ECHTE Kalbsfleischpflanzer (€21.40 - three succulent veal meatballs with mashed potatoes, gravy, and buttered onions), and Handgeschabte Käsespätzle (€17.40 - homemade cheese noodles with mountain cheese and pear, topped with fried onions and served with a side salad; basically a bougee Bavarian mac and cheese, and a great vegetarian option). Two members of our party also ordered their Ausgezogener Apfelstrudel (€8.60), which was a sumptuous apple strudel with perfectly al-dente apples, flaky pastry, and warming spices, served with ice cream and a caramel-like sauce. In terms of price point, Maximilians sits in the moderate to premium range for Berlin restaurants: obviously pricier than your average beer hall or currywurst stand, but fitting for its polished service, urban location, elevated cuisine (with huge portions, might I add), as well as its large audience of tourists. If you're ever in the area, I would highly recommend Maximilians, and I'll certainly be back to sample some of their other colossal dishes!
We really enjoyed ourselves at Maximilian. It should be a must visit when visiting Berlin. It has a feel of an alte Brauhaus. And, it's just a fun place to sit back and enjoy some good food and yes, some Baverian brau. Maximilian is owned by Hacker-Pschorr, which in turn is owned by Paulaner. But unlike the Paulaner's outpost off Potsdamer Platz, Maximilian gives off that alte München vibe. Service is very professional and they observe you from afar. We never felt rushed, nor in need of asking for a refill. Nice! Very nice, actually! Out of the dozen beers served (20+), I tried and really liked their Weissbier Dunkel. It was more nutty and less citrusy. My wife really liked their Mosel Riesling, not too sweet. As for the food, it was a wow! I had the Hexe/ half a Pork Knuckle and found it delicious. While my wife had the Hähnchenbrust/ Salad with Chicken. We saved room for Dessert with was equally good. Five Stars
This is a nice place with very comfortable atmosphere. When we walked in we were given a time frame to eat as we came in without a reservation. Walking to our table I did notice 1/2 the tables still empty. Our server Otto was very friendly, he took our order and helped with some items. Food arrived quickly, the cheese board was good, the bread that came with it was amazing. My husband ordered a schnitzel and I ordered the pork knuckle. I loved my dish but the schnitzel was average, the red cabbage was dry and the spatzle were plain no gravy or anything over them. The beer was fantastic so was the dessert. While this is not a complaint but I had better German food in NYC prepared and served by non German people. Cheers!
Our driver from the airport said that the most traditional German restaurant is Maximilians, and if we did not like it, we just did not like German food. My friends and I had to go, so we entered and were seated soon after. The restaurant is very big and has a lot of seating. Our server helped us in English, and we placed our orders. My favorite was the white sausage that came with the pretzel. That sausage was so tender and delicious. I also got a potato and chicken dish, but it was not worth the price, in my opinion. I had a great time overall, but would definitely try for the white sausage again!
This was a fun traditional German restaurant, and of course I had the schnitzel, which was awesome. We also had the apple strudel. It was a perfect pairing. They had some music, though it was in another room.
The place was huge and packed due to the Berlin Marathon. We had to wait in line for about 30 mins. Swrvice was fast though as soon as seated. Here's what we had: 1. Maximilian brotzeit 21.60 (app platter) - that has some cheese, deli meat, pretzel, bread & dip 2. Gebratene Maishähnchenbrust - roasted cornfed chicken, bake potato filled with curds 3. Sauerbraten von der ochsenbacke - sour roast ox cheek - tender meat. 4. Ganze Haxe - roasted knuckle with bavarian cabbage - seems like every table had this, crispy pork skin, tender meat & cabbage with gravy like sauce Hapy tummy!
So this is where we had our first pork knuckle on our trip to Germany. We had no reservation during Oktoberfest season and there was the Berlin Marathon happening at the same time. And we only had to wait for a table for 2 minutes. They had live music playing, people were dancing and singing . The service was friendly and as fast as you want. The food was great! And so was the beer. They have so much variety on their menu. We couldn't finish it all. Loved it!
Delicious food and generous portion! We tried Maximillians on our first meal at Berlin. Overall, everyone left the restaurant with a happy full belly. We picked this restaurant after we checked into our hotel at the Mandala Suites and needed to grab a quick bite. The restaurant looked quite busy, and the menu had diverse offering, which we felt were good signs before we tried. I had the roasted trout with mashed potatoes and roasted fennel. The trout was perfectly done with crispy skin on the outside and tender flaky fish inside. The mashed potato was creamy and delicious, and the roasted side veggies were perfect complements to the dish. Most of the entrees came with very generous offerings. My husband loved his bratwurst, and the sour kraut was the best he had ever had in his life. All entrees also came with very generous serving and very comparable to the US sizes. Our bill for 6 people came to $160, which was a steal with the amount of food we got. The service was a but on the slow side, but the waiters were very friendly and helpful. A good restaurant for sampling authentic German food!
Good place for a Bavarian beer hall type of meal. They get very crowded and busy at dinner so make sure you have reservations or arrive early. I was there before 6 and after 7 there was a huge line out the door. I had the cucumber salad which was excellent and like my family from childhood. The pork roast with potato and bread dumplings was excellent. Everything went well with a beer. A lot of tourists here and the typical slower German service but overall a good experience.
They have very traditional German cuisine which is really tasty. Good service, and live music while we were there. An accordion and a horn player. Good draft beer.
Simply put, this is the best Bavarian-style restaurant I've ever been to, and it's going to be tough to top. I didn't expect to be debating the proper use and presentation of ingredients over dinner, but here we are. The schnitzel was buttery with a mild harmony of flavors, the wurst sausage bold yet smooth with a hint of citrus, and the pork knuckle... was oh-so savory perfection all the way down to the bone. I couldn't have asked for more; it was just perfect. If only this could be my daily meal!
Good place to grab any multiple varieties of lager beers. They have traditional German food as well. Our beers were served in a chilled glass.
Great bavarian german restaurant. Had to get some sausages with a pretzel and also pork schnitzel which came with beautfiul in-season white asparagus and perfectly boiled potatoes. The asparagus came with a great butter and breadcrumbs sauce which drizzled on the potatoes was amazing. As silly as it sounds the boiled potatoes were the best I've ever had. Perfectly cooked through but not mushy and they kept their shape. Pretzel was excellent as was the pork schnitzel, pounded thin and perfectly fried. We finished with apple strudel with ice cream, which was just ok, maybe a 3 for me. The waitress was quite surly and we had to chase her down to order after sitting there for 15 minutes without anyone coming to the table. That was the only real downside, though I noticed other tables were getting served quickly, so maybe it's a one-off thing only. Restaurant is quite big with lots of seating, many beer options and nice clean bathrooms downstairs as well. read more
Authentic in every way! German to the core and just the way grandma would make it! Want a real treat? Order the pork knuckles with sauerkraut and dough balls. You get a little extra gravy on the side. It's wonderful. Surrounded by happy people eating delicious food. What more could you ask for? read more
Don't let the "kitschy" statue at the door turn you away! This place is authentically German, from the attire of the waitstaff to the menu offerings. Walking in the door gives you the feeling of dining in a Bavarian beer hall where there are plenty of locals enjoying the atmosphere. For us tourists, photos are included for most of the menu selections. I tried their signature dish: knuckle with cabbage and a potato dumpling. Even the half portion was huge! The veal schnitzel and steak entrees were also delicious. My server spoke little English, so knowledge of German would be a plus if dining here. The restaurant seems to be known for their beer and has quite a selection, however, a smaller wine menu is also available. I would definitely recommend making a reservation or coming early. As my friends and I were leaving, the line for entry was out the door. read more

It's a good place to experience Bravarian food, but I wasn't overwhelmed by the experience or the food. I had the sauteed ox with mash and carrots. It wasn't bad; decent sized portion for the price, but it was hyped up on my head and didn't wow me. My friend had the white sausage with white asparagus...it was ok. Few more things to call out: 1) the place usually has a decent sized line (which is usually a good sign; just an FYI) 2) Service wasn't very good, but I will say it was fairly quick once the waitress came over 3) it appears they only serve Hacker Shorr beer (but it's every kind that they make so you have like 8 or 9 options. Never knew they had so many.) I'm not saying don't go, but there's no need to go out of your way if there are other options near you. read more

First restaurant my mom and I stumbled upon and it was very successful. Food was really good. The beer was fresh and tasted very good. The meatballs were seasoned and cooked well. The mashed potatoes were moist and well cooked. The gravy tasted very good. Our server was really nice and helpful. He directed us to some places to walk to after dinner. The place was bright and everyone was happy. The building was nice and intriguing. The servers were pleasant and looked happy. Overall, a place I recommend if you are in Friedrichstr. read more
Yay! We made it to Berlin. Definitely need to return and spend more time. My friend Jen spotted this location during our food search and off we went. We had to wait a few minutes but honestly we were sat very quickly. Our server was AWESOME!! She recommended several beers as well as dishes. It took us so long to finally decide because as we were scanning the menu, dishes were arriving all around us and we got distracted. Oktoberfest was a few days prior to our arrival but I opted for an Oktoberfest bier. I have to add that I'm not a huge beer drinker but I just had to. Everyone at our table ordered something different; potato soup, warm pretzels, white sausages, but my dish of veal meatballs was THE best. read more
A classic (and old) beer-hall in Mitte You come here for the beer, vast quantities of it, drunk with zest and fervor (and when you head to the men's room to let it out, there are convenient forehead rests on the wall strategically placed ). The place is surprisingly clean and bright, which is either good or bad, depending on your point of view. The food, while good (and classic - specially the schweinshaxe) is expensive for the genre - but hey, that's probably cos you're paying for the name and location. Anyhow, the bottom line is that it's well worth the visit , at least once... read more

Americans visiting for Berlin marathon weekend. Walked in with no reservation, saw reserved tables so must be able to do so. Seated promptly. Service was good. Portions large. Staff wear traditional German dress. read more

We came in for dinner with no reservation on a Sunday. The wait was less than 20 mins & we got seated right away- Service was excellent, waiter was so attentive to our needs- considering it was our 1st time there- Service/ Waiter: He fully explained their best/popular dishes, suggested the best beer/ wine that would go well with our meal. We felt very comfortable & enjoyed ourselves. Food: very humungous portion, full of flavor & cooked with perfections. What made it very memorable was the way we were treated by the waiter- He was one the reason we truly enjoyed our visit! Thank you very much.... I wish we got this name! This place is worth your money & time! Excellent in all aspects!!! read more
The first time we went it was great. I loved my beer and it was reasonably priced! The spaetzle was really great as well. The potato dumplings were flavorful but dense/heavy. My mom liked her pretzel. The waiter, a male, was really nice. The second time we went back the waitress was so mean and rude and anti-Americans that we walked out and didn't finish placing our order. We went back again just to sit at the bar so I could have the beer and they were really nice. read more

Service - good, fast, and friendly Food - as good as any newbie to German food can get? And I put a question mark because I am not an expert on German food. Servings are big, ok for 2 adults unless you are famished or do not want to share. I ordered the sour roast of ox cheek. Sauce was really rich, mashed potato was very rich and hearty, and the mixed carrots were really good! I enjoyed it! Highly recommend. Even the chicken tenders that the kids ordered were big servings. They are good. Their fries were also good and crispy! Drinks - I don't drink beer but I was told it was good. Coke and water are small in size and expensive! Like €4-5!!!! And not refillable!!!! - hence the 4 stars. Ambience - good! It's true, the servers wear traditional clothes. Some tables were reserved and they were marked, we went there without reservations and we were places in the back which was still roomy. Not a whole lot of people since we came close to 6pm, and sunset at this month was at 9:25pm so it was very bright still. But by the time we left, large groups and crowds were beginning to trickle in. read more

We visited Maximillian's on our recent trip to Germany. We just sort of stumbled upon it while wandering around and decided to give it a try. The restaurant was pretty big inside and very comfortable. The service was great as well in fact it may have been some of the best we experienced on our entire trip. Our server was great with recommendations for us and checked on us frequently which we appreciated. For appetizers we started with the pretzels with butter and they were so good. Fresh and warm. For my meal I had the meatballs which were amazing. I didn't realize German meatballs were a thing before this trip but now that I do I'm definitely a fan. These were tender and flavorful. The potatoes they came with were wonderful also. For dessert I had some apricot dumplings and they were ok but not my favorite. They were very pretty though. My husband had the apple strudel and his was better. All in all if I get the chance I'd stop in again! read more

We are American and visited this restaurant in Berlin and we were impressed! The food was delicious authentic German cuisine. The drinks were great. The service was wonderful and it's in a great location ! Definitely coming back here next time I am in Berlin. I had the veal meatballs and they were so delicious read more

For a good Bavarian meal in northern Germany, Maximilians does the trick. It's welcoming atmosphere is well-lit, food/drinks are delicious, and service is superior. They have long tables and steins on display, emulating the amazingness that you can find at the brewhouses in Munich. read more
