Wanted to leave a review even while it's currently closed and not providing take-out options while Berlin's shelter-in-place order is in place.
Firstly, super convenient if you're looking for dinner (especially if you're looking for German food) late on a Sunday evening when most places are closed. Secondly, heads up that this restaurant, as has become known, is LGBTQ+ friendly. That means they're a regular restaurant that serves food to many, many different kinds of REGULAR PEOPLE. It's one of the many restaurants located in Schöneberg, the world's first gay district/village and Berlin's biggest at over 4 square miles. As someone who went with a large group of people who were very, VERY nervous about going to a restaurant that they whispered "that's where the GAY people go", I can vouch that it's a regular little hole in the wall place with some tight outdoor seating when the weather is okay. Ironically, nobody else seemed to realize that our shared hotel was ON THE BORDER OF THIS DISTRICT, for all their fussing. There wasn't anything about the place that was "too gay" for the conservative members of our tour group and everyone enjoyed themselves, thinking that it was a great place to enjoy our first night in Berlin.
Elefant is mainly a schnitzel and beer place in the northwest corner are of the Schöneberg district. It's a small, tight place, so I wouldn't recommend coming in bigger groups especially in the evenings when they seem particularly busy. We were split up and they really had to move some things around to fit some additionally 5th people (me) without having me end up in our neighboring table's lap. Super accommodating and I appreciate it.
Overall, their thing is big, hearty meals and with plenty of choices for beer. The main focus is on their schnitzels and I've never seen so many different kinds! Their dishes, even most of the salads, are very protein-heavy. Schnitzel tends to be pork, but they also have variations which include chicken and (for an additional fee) veal. I ended up getting the French Style schnitzel just because I've never seen schnitzel with brie cheese and mustard. The croquettes also ended up being really tasty. However, I also thought the Hunter Style one tasted great. Additionally, they have their "Berlin Specials", which I thought to be pretty interesting. However, I do kind of see them as chance dishes, despite wanting to try them. My mom got the roulade (rolled meat) that was on the menu, and we agreed that texture wasn't the best. Definitely would recommend coming here for a tasty late dinner. read more
