This a great gem in Berlin! A must visit when in town. Old, traditional decor with random signs and things. Really has that old time Germany feeling. Read the reviews and saw that it is a popular place and reservations are recommended. We were dining early (4:45) and thought it wouldn't be hard to get in with a party of two. We did get a table but under the condition that we'd be done by 6pm. By that time, we could see why. The place started to fill up. Both of our meals were excellent. Coworker had the schnitzel (I know someone who thinks that word is funny) and I had the beef tips in a mushroom sauce over spaetzle. Soooo, soooo, good! Plate clearing good. This place was great! A Pub like restaurant with a good looking menu (options) and a very friendly staff. We were warmly greeted despite not having reservations. The food was really good. There is a full bar, draft and bottled beer. Our waiter was extremely friendly and fun. The interior decor is eclectic, plenty of things to look at to include the menu that has throw back adds that wee interesting to read. Haha. Fun Place!!! Great traditional food served in your grandmothers living room (if she was German and born around 1915)! The thing about this place is that the food is incredible, but the service is intentionally surly. There is an English menu, and we always get what we order and truly have a great time interacting with the servers. Make reservations either on their website or if you're visiting, have your hotel do it, but the place is very popular with locals so getting a table last minute may not work. read more

I got in at the perfect time as it just started to get busy. Edi, my server, was so very friendly and attentive. He was proud of the restaurant and its dishes and made it such a nice experience for someone that has only eaten German food a handful of times. Food: I had two beers, Schneider Weisse and Schwarzbier. Both were good. For food, I got a plate of sausages, potatoes, and sauerkraut. They were all excellent. I would definitely come back for their food. Service: English is almost useless here, so bring a German speaking friend if you can. Otherwise, service is pretty decent. It was super busy when we got there and you could tell that the wait staff was running around trying to get to everybody. Location: Since the place was packed, my friends and I had to sit outside. We stopped here completely by chance on our arrival day in Berlin. We were staying pretty close by, and so happy we stumbled on this place! My family that was with me (and of course myself) are all from Minnesota - and we ran into a former German high school teacher also from Minnesota at the bar, and he shared that he always brought his tour groups & student groups to this bar/restaurant on the first night. How fitting!! True German food, and lots of German beer options - exactly what you would expect! Went to Dicke Wirtin my last night in Berlin, on advice from the concierge at my hotel. As others have said, make a reservation!! I was solo, but barely got in and sat at the end of the bar. The service was friendly, but just a little rushed (I guess due to the crowd). I had a special - the Berlin Plate. It was great. Good sampling of several menu items, including meatball, pork roast, and currywurst. I didn't enjoy the meatball as much as the rest, but the plate overall was great. Good portion size (especially compared to plates I saw on other tables - giant schnitzel!) and inexpensive. Definitely make the trip here, but reserve your spot! read more

Language barriers are dealt with kindly and with humility and humor (just try to learn a few words and you'll be great). I always recommend this place to friends touring through Berlin. I first came here on the recommendation of a friend and tourmate who lives nearby, and it's since become a favorite of many others I've sent there. Great low key restaurant! We stopped in on our first night in Berlin based on reviews we found online (and it was walking distance from our hotel). We didn't have reservations and ended up having to sit at the bar since there was nothing available. If you have a larger group or absolutely have to have a table I would highly recommend making a reservation even for a week-night. The place reminded me of a great local bar, a little dark inside, a energetic atmosphere, lots of conversation and laughter - just a nice chill place. The food however, was really good! We started with the asparagus soup (it was a special while we were there) and it was SO good. My hubby ordered the schnitzel and it was huge! Definitely bring your appetite for that one. It was nice and crispy, super thin, and everything a schnitzel should be. I ordered a chicken entree (I don't remember exactly what it was called) which was very well done and perfect for someone looking for something a little lighter. We loved that this place had locals as well as tourists. We sat outside and watched the street traffic while we ate. For dinner, we had beer (of course). The currywurst was alright and their signature dish of fried pork cutlet while was great value for the portion size was nothing the write home about. At the end our bill came and they had two items from another table that they incorrectly charged us for and instead of making it right by removing the items, they decided to just give us the drinks the other table had and left the bill the same. However, we were greeted at the door with a big welcome and offered drinks at the bar while we waited and had a table before we got our drinks. We came here for the beef and spätzle dish for my husband, who was drooling over their menu and pictures weeks before we came to Berlin. Fantastic food, fun servers. It was a little awkward when we first arrived as no one seated us for a bit. However, when we were seated, our servers were funny and welcoming. Quirky interior, all themed around the fat landlady. I order the beef goulash with potato dumplings and red cabbage- yum! Portions are generous and will leave you feeling very full. The restaurant was very busy when we arrived, but they were able to arrange a table for our family of 4 within minutes. While the restaurant allows smoking, the smoking section is separated from the rest of the restaurant by a closed door so we were not bothered. The waiter was very friendly and had no trouble with English, but made our kids practice their German :) They have a decent beer selection including Andechs. Portions were generous and really tasty. I had the Schöneberger Rinderroulade mit Rotkohl & Klößen which was EXCELLENT. The meat was tender and flavorful and the red cabbage may have been the best I've ever had. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Should have listened to my Dad's Golden Rule on this one: "Never eat anything bigger than your head." Dad's Golden Rule really would have come in handy at Dicke Wirtin's, where I managed to devour THE biggest plate of German food I've ever encountered. Oh man. I'm still feeling slightly queasy thinking about it. But I reeeeaaallllllyyyy should have at least been warned by the name of the place--Dicke Wirtin literally means "fat landlady." Come ON. What more could I have needed to clue me in?!? Well, regardless of my stomach exploding in protest (I'll spare you the gory details), Dicke Wirtin is a pretty chill neighborhood place near Savignyplatz, and it's one of those places that feels like it's been around forever. Dark wood, mirrored walls, tons of German beer memorabilia, a mannequin dressed in a vintage soldier dress...it really doesn't get more German than this. The Chicago Brauhaus can't TOUCH this. The menu has all your German standards: schnitzel, spätzle, cucumber salad, potato-crusted whitefish in horseradish sauce, spargel anything (it is the time of year for asparagus, afterall!), leberkäse, you name it. And when we all received our plates, I immediately realized what a steal this place is for the amount of food you receive. I ordered the schnitzel (with pork, not veal--pork is far more common here) and it basically took up the ENTIRE plate! I ordered spätzle as a side, and the schnitzel was so huge, they put the spätzle UNDERNEATH the schnitzel....omg. Totally bigger than my head, but at this point, I think the plate of crispy, creamy deliciousness put me into a trance. There was no turning back. The results: pretty darn good. Not the best I've had (I'm becoming quite the schnitzel connoisseur) but had a good crispness to it, the spätzle was creamy and had onions in it (points!), and the cucumber salad had a great vinegary flavor. So why 3 stars? You might ask, why does Dicke Wirtin have to suffer in rating, when my eyes are too big for my stomach? Sometimes these things cannot be explained. BUT--I'll try this place again. It was one of the better German restaurants I've tried (in quality and atmosphere) so at least now I'm prepared: whatever you do, however tempted you may be, DON'T EAT IT ALL! Thanks Dad. read more

Amongst the throng of German Restaurants in Berlin, I felt welcomed and comfortable in this cozy, divey restaurant that serves great beers and even better traditional German food. The atmosphere is kind of like the German version of Cheers, a divey-but-cool restaurant bar with Televisions showing German soccer and whatever sports is on at the moment. Service is friendly and there is a good mix of both tourists and locals. Dicke Wirtin is also located in the lovely Charlottenburg neighborhood. The Schweinebraten (Bavarian Pork Roast) was delicious! It was served wiith a light brown sauce drizzled over, and it was tender, juicy and cooked to perfection, along with the soft, pillowy potato dumplings and sweet pickled cabbage that it came with. Really nicely done. I also got to try their Pork Schnitzel, and it is quite good (pounded thin and deep fried, so you are eating a pork cutlet about the size of your kid's head). Wunderbar! I also sat at the bar and talked it up with the bartender on duty. He introduced me to Berliner Kindl Weisse, a curiously cloudy, sour beer that, when added with a Red (Rasberry) or Green (I'm still not sure what flavor that was) accompaniment, gives the beer a different, kiddy-like desserty taste, kind of like a Belgian Lambic. Refreshing, but definitely not a drink for tough guys... :) Overall great pub experience with friendly locals and servers.
