This was our favorite meal in Berlin and we've been on a two and half week trip through Europe and it's high across all those meals as well. First, the restaurant is set in a beautiful courtyard, but they also had nice indoor seating as well. Service was very good, they came frequently to check in and refill our waters. The food was amazing and we really enjoyed everything we ate. We started with bread service and a spinach and grape salad that had some nice bits of buckwheat for crunch. Our mains we tried the pork and the beef brisket main dishes which were both served with wonderful sauces to complement the meat. We ordered creamed summer corn and the fries with a aioli verde which were perfect and shared everything. My favorite was the pork, which had some caramelization and porky goodness and lovely pickled veg which paired perfectly with the rich pork. My wife loved the beef brisket which came with some nice fresh celery for contrast. As silly as it sounds the fries were excellent! The creamed corn was just ok, nothing wrong with it, but my least favorite of everything we ordered. For dessert though, the shaved ice milk with toppings was incredible. Innovative, something we've never had and loved being able to add the toppings as we pleased for different tastes. its kind of like a shaved ice, but with ice milk? And it's definitely big enough to share for 2 people. It's a MUST order IMO. We loved it, would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Berlin! read more

I was told this place is classic German, so was thinking the menu would be mostly meat and potatoes, but there were surprisingly a big variety of dishes. All were very good. Even my vegetarian friend liked the meal. I highly suggest you come here with a large group so you can sample a little bit of everything. Here were my favorites (it's a long list): * Buffalo burrata, yellow beetroot, chanterelles, and kale pesto * Salmon trout ceviche * Freshly cut French fries with various dips: very simple dish, but we all loved munching on them * "Candy on bone" pork with pickled vegetables (their signature dish) * Beef brisket with fennel, ponzu, and plum * Yellow peas puree with apple chutney * Roasted cauliflower with smoked potatoes * Flank steak tagliata with chimichurri sauce * Gingerbread crème brûlée, pear, and plum sorbet * Honey parfait and pear These dishes were decently good, but probably would refrain from ordering if the above dishes were available: * Pumpkin salad, dill, and Jerusalem artichoke * Potato-onion tart with lovage cream * Mango sorbet * Shaved milk ice cream Not-a-fan dishes that others might like: * Duck tataki, pak choi, and kumquats: overall flavor was good, but there were mounds of duck pate not listed on the ingredients list and I was not a fan of pate * Mushroom tartar, egg yolk, and cauliflower cream: having both egg yolk and cauliflower cream made the dish too wet Service was top-notch. Our table size increased last minute (completely our fault) and the host scrambled to switch our table with another party's, even though the other party already seated a guest! They nicely asked that guest to switch and she agreed. Our waitress was attentive and made good suggestions without upselling. Despite ordering most of the menu, our food came out reasonably quickly. Excellent food and service. I had their signature sous vide pork, which was a lot like BBQ but more meaty and with a subtler tang. The petitis fours for dessert were just perfect. Nice ambience (you can eat outdoors or indoors). Creative cocktails as well. I really enjoyed my solo dinner here while traveling in Germany. Definitely make reservations as this place is quite popular with locals and tourists alike. The location is really charming. It is easy to miss from the street, as you have to walk through a little courtyard to get to the door (it is in an old brewery). I had a trout and sunchoke appetizer and for the main course I had sausage that came in a little cast iron skillet with mashed sweet potato and parsnips. I also had a side of puy lentins. Everything was hearty and delicious. I found the portions to be quite large, especially for one person (see the pics!). They have a nice and varied wine list. I did not have a chance to try their cocktails, but they all looked/sounded delicious. I also noticed everyone around me was ordering their fries and seemed to be devouring them, so I think it is safe to say that is one of their go-to appetizers! Their staff seem quite international. Hidden, albeit well known, gem in Berlin. We started our dinner with a bottle of Peth Wetz Sauvignon Blanc, which was delicious, and a few apps, including their sourdough bread, goat cheese croquette and hand-cut fries with roasted garlic mayonnaise. The four of us loved each dish, with the star of the show being the fries, which were just as flavorful with and without their mayonnaise counterpart. We all ordered different mains and enjoyed them as well. I ordered the salmon, which had a satisfying crunchy skin contrasting the supple texture of the actual fish. The service was more similar to an American restaurant, with attention to re-filling water/wine, more frequent check-ins by the staff, etc. We sat on the ground floor and loved our view of the kitchen and bar. The interior felt cozy, warm and interesting. A quick note! Their espresso 2.0 cocktail does not contain actual espresso, so we were a bit disappointed when we ordered it, thinking we would be getting a twist on a more traditional espresso martini. Dinner was fantastic - great food and perfect service. However, as I was leaving with my family, I left through a door that apparently you are not supposed to use. There were no signs, so I could not know. My daughter followed me out and she was approached by a waiter in a quite rude matter. I apologized to the waiter saying that I was the one who opened the door. The waiter told me to shut up. I told her she was being rude and she insulted me, calling me sissy. Yes, these were her exact words. Unbelievable. It takes a single person do totally destroy a dinner experience that was just great. I came back and spoke to the manager. I started by congratulating him for the dinner and before I complained the waiter came back and she started again speaking in a loud an rude voice, this time in German, which I don't understand. Later I learned that before that she came again after my daughter being again rude to her. Dear Orange Katz team - apologies for opening a wrong door in your restaurant. I suggest locking or putting a sign so that people won't walk out through the many doors next to the dining room. That said, I have been to so many restaurants in my life, some great, some poor, some with great service, others not as good. But I was never ever personally insulted by anyone in a dining experience, especially in such a low and sad way. I will never come back, unfortunately. This was just unacceptable. read more

Admittedly when I saw the photo of the exterior of the building & realized it was close by after an exhausting travel day, I quickly decided Katz Orange was our perfect dinner spot. We were extremely pleasantly surprised. Not only did the ambiance deliver as thoughtful & consistent as only the Germans can do, but the service was warm & just the right amount of attentive, and the food was great. We started with the burrata, which lets be honest, should be a chip shot, but in this case they enhanced the heck out of it with their accompaniments and it was delightful served on their house made bread. They use a "sharing concept" which I normally hate but they were super chill about it. We had the pork that was melt in your mouth tender & slightly sweet, balanced perfectly with some pickled vegetables; the salmon with the most delightful (stick with me here) turnip puree I have ever eaten, and some mild kimchee that paired perfectly; as well as the sausage plate that was very flavorful & not just another German Sausage. It's a hip restaurant. I'm not German, but I found this place quite local. We had couple of beers and white wines. They recommended SLOW CUISINE but we didn't feel like meat by then. So we ordered smoked salmon and a really nice salad (sweet and refreshing) as appetizer. Then we ordered 3 sides: roasted root vegetables, swede purée and fries with goose fat as main courses. The dessert was pretty good. We had the selection of six chocolates / cookies. I'd love to try the fruit wine marinated chocolate cake next time. We had a reservation for 9:30pm. But we showed up an hour early and they kindly had us seated. The entrance was really pretty, though it was kind of confusing. The servers were really nice, helpful, and capable. A little gem in the fashionable Mitte, Katz Orange is popular! So popular - without a reservation you would be pretty lucky to get a table without a reservation... Thankfully, on my second attempt I scored a seat at the bar overlooking the kitchen, which is actually my favourite posi to waffle to the bartenders, check out the kitchen, and admittedly also check out the cute blond waitress who is way out of my league. First wine is a 2009 Nunci Granache from Spain. Something not quite right about it, and the sommelier agreed. Second glass is a young 2014 Syrah, from Les Garrigues which is fine, but nothing to write home about. The lovely bar lads come back excitedly with the first wine opened fresh from upstairs and it is a completely different wine - absolutely superb! Onto the food... The Quail with rhubarb entree is okay, love the mix of flavors, but he quail is over cooked and quantity lacking in the sea of green leaves and rhubarb. The signature piece of Duroc Pork with a side of smoked Rutabaga Purée is simply the reason this place gets 4 stars (aside from the cute waitress and overall friendly staff). Normally a dish for two, there was no problem by the staff with catering for little old me, and it was worth it. Slow cooked meats can be pretty dry, this was succulent, tender and superbly slow cooked! Staff friendliest I have found, chilled environment, smokin slow cooked pork and a sommelier that doesn't have a stick up his ass, makes for a really really nice evening.... Gold Fashioned and cheesecake finish was probably my poor match. The gold fashioned was so strong you could power a plane with it and the cheesecake is good, but pretty poorly matched by them with shitty icy sorbet... We will all take blame on that one... We had a nice evening out at this cool Berlin restaurant. It's tucked away in the back of a smal courtyard. The waitstaff were young, hip and fluent in English. Wine by the glass was inexpensive. My wife started off with the bean salad, which was OK . I liked the smoked trout very much. My wife had the vegetarian quiche, which was OK. My daughter and I shared short ribs for two, which was cooked sous vide. It was excellent. We had a side of very good arugla salad. The french fries and home made ketchup were really good, too. This place is gorgeous, there's no going around that. It has that rare beauty that is both old world and new, quiet and understated and then all of a sudden cheery and hip. I wandered into this unassuming courtyard one day in Mitte and vowed to go back. And I went back in style. Friday night without reservations at this buzzing place meant that my friend and I were at the bar for about 20 minutes. But we received incredible service. Everyone, from the hostess to the bar men to the waitresses, were very helpful and friendly. I started with a light champagne and my friend got the mezcal mule, which was deep and spicy and highly recommended. Our appetizers were delicious as well. I've never had calamaretti so tender and fresh; the dill and fava beans tasted like spring in Berlin (and no, I cannot eat any more asparagus here, there's too much this season or something). The grilled prawn actually convinced me that guacamole can work with maracuya - it was also a fresh dish, brighter tasting than the luxuriously succulent calamaretti. We finally moved to a table and had the whole living room to admire. It really feels like you're at a big ski lodge party with very attractive Berliners. My partner got the slow roasted beef and I got the tuna tartare. Here was the massive fail for me. While my friend adored his meat, I suffered through what must have been the most mediocre tartare in my life. I instantly regretted not getting an entree instead of the appetizer; maybe they would have put more creativity into the entrees? This tartare came with a completely plain salad and also boiled carrots and potatoes. It literally have a bad name to all tartare - and I've had incredible tartare in overall mediocre restaurants, so this was a huge shock considering what I was expecting from Katz Orange based on the earlier appetizers. I managed to focus my attention on our lovely bottle of red, the great atmosphere, friendly hip crowd, and then the gorgeously presented and subtle tasting peanut cheesecake that left me feeling like all is good in the world. This place knows about setting the mood for an awesome experience. From entering the courtyard to be seated , there is so much attention to details it was refreshing. The server was very knowledgeable about both the food and the beverage menu. I actually went with his suggestions for my entire meal. The menu has vegetarian options which is a plus plus in my book . They encourage family style dining but that was not going to happen today because I don't eat meat and lamb was ordered . I ordered the vegetarian option which was the cornbread. The drinks were on points , we got cocktails . The food was tasty with layers of flavors happily playing in your mouth. Desserts were interesting and I will leave it at that. This is a must visit destination in Berlin, especially for those that enjoy great cocktails in addition to great food--all in a beautiful setting. I've been here four times over the course of two trips to Berlin. During each trip I visited Katz Orange a couple of nights later after having a fantastic experience during the first visit. I've taken several groups of colleagues to Katz Orange, and every single one of them raved about the experience. My brother in law gave us a gift certificate to eat here as a gift so we definitely indulged. We got the slow cooker lamb (for 2), two sides (French fries and root vegetables), the cheesecake, medium petit four dessert, three beers and a bottle of water. Everything was impeccable, but fair warning - the meat is pretty heavy and we practically rolled ourselves home from being so full. Without a gift certificate, we probably would have skipped dessert or only gotten one side to share between the 2 of us. The atmosphere is amazing. Incredibly passion-filled experience. The bartender comes to the table and makes sure your drinks are perfect. The food is creative and thoughtful. Very beautiful location tucked in an alleyway off of Torstrasse. The dining areas are divided into several smaller rooms over at least two floors - this helps cut down on noise, as almost every table was full on a recent Friday night, yet no one at our table had to raise their voices to be heard. Service was also very good in contrast to reviews we had read on other sites. The location and ambiance is suitable to a romantic date or a somewhat lager group of good friends. Food had lots of potential, but needs more oversight to be worth the hefty price. Our field greens tasted a little dirty, probably could have used another washing to get rid of some grains of dirt. The slow cooked pork was also a little dry, and the accompanying sides (potatoes, pickled cucumbers, onions) could have used something a little more colorful (green vegetable) to better round out the plate. The venison was a big hit - was cooked perfectly and very tasty, with an interesting number of vegetables and other bite-sized tastes decorating the plate. The steak tartar was also nicely done. The dessert list had a lot to offer - we ordered two and enjoyed both, but nothing to write home about. A big disappointment however was my cocktail - I had read on local blogs that Katz Orange was well known for its bartenders, but was horrified to see my sazerac served in a glass full of ice with a straw, which I'm pretty sure is a major no-no for this type of drink. Not sure if this was intentional in order to add a house flare or not, so i decided to give it a chance rather than sending it back, but it certainly kills everything good about this drink. the ice makes it difficult to sip and eventually waters down the rye, and the straw is a cheap addition to an 11 euro drink that also obscures the absinthe aroma. I'd be curious to know if this was their intention (and whether the other cocktails are similarly misinterpreted) or whether it was made by a new and poorly trained staff member. read more

The restaurant is wonderful decorated. I really like it. The chandelier in the entry hall is just great. The waiter is friendly but could speak better german or english. It was quite difficult to understand him with his spanish/italian accent. The prices are incredible high for the offered service and definitely not worth it. we were 4 person and spend 190 € nevertheless we were still hungry after leaving the place. we had a couple of starters two times dishes for 2 persons which include reordering - the reording portions are ridicolous small and another main dish The quality of the meat is good but size/quality is not worth this price. For our main dinner in Berlin, we made a reservation at Katz Orange. The entrance is inside a plaza of sorts - similar to what we had encountered at other places - so you have a view of what could almost pass as a smaller church steeple as you walk towards the entrance. It does appear that if the weather cooperates, there might be outdoor seating of some kind as well (on a cold, rainy December night, that definitely was not an option). Once inside, you find a really cozy, fun space - some seating in the front that is more on couches and sofas; a small bar that is centered around a support beam in the building (and lined with all kinds of liquor); and a small dining room in the back that has a little bit of red lighting across the top against black wallpaper. In short - very unique and very Berlin. The only situation I wasn't a fan of was the coat check; while our coats were taken for us, we had to go to the coat racks outside the bathrooms and figure out where they had been put. If we are going to fetch our own coats, we might as well put them there ourselves (which seemed to be what folks were doing when we headed out). Although the food here is excellent, one has to start with the drinks. There's a number of fine cocktail choices, ranging from things like negronis with a faint hint of peanut (really enjoyable) to a drink like 'Mahalo to India', which can bring a punch but has a nice dash of spices and herbs infused into the beverage as well. For anyone who loves their alcohol, this place surely knows how to showcase it. The food, though...what to say? The French fries are a must; I really enjoyed the thick heartiness that they had, with the duck fat being subtly present in the aftertaste but not hitting you right on. I honestly didn't care for either the ketchup (which was homemade and a bit watery) or the avocado dip, but the fries were great on their own. Both the mussels and the burrata were delicious outright, but I enjoyed that both had a bit more personality than they are typically served with. The lemongrass and coriander gave the mussels and its broth a bit more character, while the Cajun spices and pesto made the burrata quite aromatic. The white beans were also a great touch, as their meatiness was a nice contrast to the creaminess of the cheese. For our main, one must do the slow-cooked meats - no questions about it. Our lamb was insanely flavorful, with each bite being juicy and tender and the meat simply falling apart into strands of deliciousness. The tomato and artichoke are there, but it's the cumin that does a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of providing the rich flavor and faintly spicy tastiness. To finish off, we split the petit fours, which, as I learned when we ate them, didn't simply double four bites but instead added more things to try. I really enjoyed the fruit-based ones (e.g. the macaron, the chocolate with berries in the middle) the best, but all were very good and not too heavy. You'll love the ambiance as soon as you step inside, but both the food and the drinks are done fantastically at Katz Orange, and it's a spot that is not to be missed when dining in Berlin. Found the recommendation from Wine & Food magazine and loved it! The vibe here is vibrant and chic. A great cocktail program that features a house infused vodka with bacon fat to make a 'New' Old Fashion! Great idea! We were offered to be seated outside but we waited at the bar to have a round of cocktails first. The outdoor seating is definitely the preferred settings as the weather was perfect. We ordered the soup with scallops, was delicious. The venison was cooked well. It was well worth a 10 Euro taxi ride. Recommend. read more

The restaurant itself is beautiful, cozy, and inviting. My server was attentive, friendly, and helpful with recommendations. The food was tasty, but the portions are among the smallest I've ever seen. I had the herb salad starter (fine) and slow roasted pork main (delicious but tiny portion served in a small dish alongside 2 cauliflower florets and a few crispy onions). (The pork main is meant to serve 2, but the waiter kindly allowed me to order a half portion since I was alone.) I had to scarf down all the bread because I was hungry by the end of the meal. The woman eating next to me also commented to her server about the small portion sizes. The prices are quite high (the small serving of pork was 22 EUR, the sparkling water was 6,20, etc.).
