American here. Ima hit this with five stars. Look, when you're in a foreign country and you want food, but you're unsure of food quality, the service, whether there's "something for everyone" on the menu, it's tough! The reason I'm giving five stars is because the place is very much akin to the great pubs back in the states: Warm, inviting, friendly faces, tall beers, a good menu... I genuinely can't say thank you enough to this restaurant. The food here is great - you can really taste the quality, the freshness. Europe just does it better, it's a fact and I can't argue it. They don't have to put butter, sugar, salt in everything to make it taste good because ITS ALREADY NATURALLY GOOD here. Go to this restaurant. Order what you want. Get the tomato soup, that's my absolute must have. My friend and I are trying to go back before we leave town tomorrow. Restaurant 1840 set a high mark for us on this trip!!

White asparagus, potatoes and steak , was delicious . White asparagus smacked !

Solid traditional German fare in classic pub setting. I got the steak and white asparagus and a glass of reisling, and he got lamb. The asparagus smacked ! Casual and friendly vibe and service . Would recommend

Came here for a 2nd dinner after and early dinner for a drink and a snack. Got a place with no hassel, friendly staff. Great place for a night cap. Tried a unique beer and was a great find. Food was okay, curry sausage was a tad underwhelming. Good vibes overall.

Had a really nice meal at Restaurant 1840. They had a little bit of something for everyone, from the biergarten outside to the pasta dishes inside. The restaurant is pretty large, with lots of indoor and outdoor seating options. We started off with a couple of very tasty draft Weiss Biers (wheat beers), along with a hearty German style cream based stew and a delicious, generously sized portion of bruschetta. The bruschetta was outstanding, with tons of super drag tomato and basil on top of yummy, buttery, toasted baguette bread. For my entree, I had a so it pasta with meatballs, and it was really really tasty - but very spicy! I loved it but just be aware it might be too spicy for some. My husband had curry wurst - and this place does it in the style that's almost like ketchup or bbq sauce with curry powder on top. It was good, not great - just depends on if you prefer that style of curry wurst or not. The prices seemed VERY very reasonable to me here (in total our meal came out to around €22 / $25), and servers spoke enough English to get by just fine. Service is not quick, but that's just the style in Germany in general, not a knock on this place. Overall - we would be likely to go back if in Berlin again.

    Tomato soup. Comforting!

Restauration 1840 is in a great location, a few steps from the train station. We were in the mood to try some Bavarian fare and we found it at Restauration 1840. The restaurant is large and inside makes you feel like you're in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles' lair (in the 2nd movie when they lived underground in an old train station) I loved the decor. Our waiter was really cute, patient, and accommodating. I always appreciate those who can handle larger groups of Americans. This place isn't touristy, but tourist friendly. We were able to pay separately at the end of the night. They have a lot of German/Bavarian dishes on the menu, from currywurst to schnitzel. I settled on a Bavarian pretzel and tomato soup. That soup was kind of amazing. It was creamy, comforting, and not salty. The pretzel was almost as big as my head! It tasted just like an "american pretzel", but the dipping sauces were unique. I really enjoyed the cheesy-onion dip. It complemented the pretzel really well. I couldn't finish my pretzel, so I wrapped it up in a napkin and stuck it in my purse. Cute waiters, good pretzels, good drinks...what more can you ask for?!

This restaurant has a rustic interior and plenty of outdoor seating with umbrellas. I went for lunch in the afternoon and getting seating was no problem. The service was relaxed and I found myself spending more time there than I expected. Since this is my first time visiting Berlin, I had to try the schnitzel. I ordered the Schnitzel Wiener Art which was a large pork schnitzel with home fries, salad, and an egg cooked sunny side up. Overall, the food was good; it was a large portion so you might want to consider sharing it. If you ever visit, plan to settle in and take your time here.

Pork Knuckle is amazing. Perfectly crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. Comes on a bed of sauerkraut and gravy.

Pretty good! It does get way too hot in the restaurant on warm days so I'd suggest patios. No AC in a lot of places in Germany, so embrace the outside patio life! Had the pork knuckle, but decided to split it with my friend, even the waiter suggested we did. Glad we decided too, because we both couldn't even finish it all. The skin was super crispy, and tasty and the meat inside was moist and almost fall off the bone. Comes on a bed of sauerkraut and gravy with a side of mashed potatoes and mustard. Would recommend! It's a little under 19€ so it's pricey, but it's an experience. Plus sharing it makes it cheaper! Also had the goulash as an appetiser, it was excellent and tasty. Comes with some bread to dip. Servers are very laid back and chill, I didn't find service too slow. But it's Germany, I find Berliners are very laid back and go with the flow. So they aren't gonna rush and go as fast paced with service like in North America. So give yourself a bit more time, nothing wrong with slowing down a little! Give it a try!

Delicious meal. My husband raved about the 1840 potato soup. The apfel strudel was full of apples and perfectly light crust. Friendly and attentive wait staff and nice venue with live music. Loses a star for being on the overpriced side.

Recommend by a German consultant in a hotel probably what they think Americans want. Positives good Koening beer, great german beer hall ambience, large portions. Negative the food. Had pork with brown sauce pretty bad. Go for beer, avoid for dinner.

We came here after having been turned away by an Indonesian restaurant that was "full for the night". We are so glad that fate brought us here instead of that Indonesian restaurant!! What were we even thinking anyway -- forget the Indonesian food, get the local specialities!! Ordered the schnitzel as well as the meatballs and both were executed perfectly. Schnitzel was hot and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside -- not overly salty either. Meatballs were juicy and packed with flavor from the minced onions that they had mixed in. The beer (we ordered a Pilsner) was the best that we had tried in all of the Berlin and Dresden restaurants that we visited. I believe it is from some small private brewery affiliated with the restaurant somehow. Whatever they are doing, they are doing it right, so definitely order the house beer. Super cozy seating (you'll probably be sharing a table with other guests) and packed all night long but amazing vibes and casual comfort food. Would come back if I ever visit Berlin again!

German food can be hard to find in Berlin…read more You can find German food at Prater Garten. Prater Garten has a double distinction. Outdoors, it has the oldest biergarten in Berlin. Indoors, it has an upscale German restaurant of distinction. The biergarten is not my style. If I am going to spend all day sitting outside drinking beer, I want the location to be outstandingly beautiful. Prater Garten's Plain Jane courtyard doesn't cut it. The indoor restaurant though is a different story. This is the traditional German restaurant of your dreams. The Gaststatte was the culinary peak experience of a month of serious Berlin eating. * * * Prater Gaststatte looks just the way you would expect a German restaurant to look. Dark woods. Wainscotting. Cream walls. The menu for both food and drink are limited, although they do change seasonally. This means that they make the same dishes over and over and over again. They have brought them to a high level of perfection. They only serve three beers at Prater Gaststatte, beers they brew themselves. I have no doubt those beers are wonderful. However, Prater Gaststatte had the Holy Grail of what I had come to Germany looking for Artisanal German Schnapps and Artisanal German Distilled Spirits. Bars in Berlin just don't carry those. Prater Gaststatte had a curated selection of six. (Actually a curated selection of five. The sixth item was a traditional Czech rarity.) Indiana Jones had just found his treasure. German Spirits are strong. Judiciousness limited my consumption to three. I went with a Nordhauser Doppelkorn, a Dirker Hasselnussgeist and a Stahl Birnenschnaps. Doppelkorn is a German alternative to vodka. It is 76 proof, just slightly weaker than a traditional vodka. It can be made from any of five different grains, but the rye-malt combo is the most common. The Nordhauser is an eminently superior alt-vodka - consummately smooth yet full of taste. I could have done a string of those happily. The Dirker and Stahl were both schnapps: hazelnut and pear respectively. I have never had a beverage like the hazelnut schnapps. It was not a liqueur. It was a strong brandy. Nothing sweet or cloying here. It was commanding like a brandy but smooth like the Doppelkorn. The hazelnut taste was overwhelming. It was as baritone and nutty as an Amaretto. An utterly unforgettable beverage. I stuck my neck out by going with a pear brandy. Most pear brandies are awful. I had had one and only one in my life that was good, the Finnish product Xante. Nothing is as good as Xante. Xante tastes like the canned pears served in heaven. But the Stahl Birenschnapps impressed. Nothing cloying. A real fresh pear taste. I was a very happy guy. * * * Note that although my beverages were outstanding, The food was even better. Given the quality of my distilled spirits, that last sentence is saying quite a lot. Never mind the strawberries I had for dessert. It is the beginning of strawberry season in Germany, And my meal had been so substantial that anything other than fruit would have been a crime. Spring is asparagus season in Germany. German restaurants will have one third to one half of all the dishes be asparagus dishes. I ate my fair share of mediocre asparagus dishes elsewhere in Berlin. The cream of asparagus soup at Prater Gaststatte is utterly to die for. Nothing tastes more like asparagus than that cream soup. And good cream soups are one of the fundamental pleasures of life. However, the headliner act which blew me away was their Brandenburger Pork Chop. A Brandenburger Pork Chop is a thick double-cut pork chop. The only way to get a "good" pork chop in the United States is to go to a steak house and pay steak house prices. American steak houses typically cheat by cooking it in apple juice so the pork chop gets caramelized. You eat well, but you are still covering up a ho-hum pork chop. This was a we-don't-have-to-hide-under-anything superlative pork chop. Yes there was about a tablespoon of red cabbage on top of the pork chop. It was like a maraschino cherry on top of a huge slab of meat. That pork chop had nothing to apologize for. It was a magnificent piece of meat. Easily a third of it was outer fat - outer fat that had been broiled to perfection. The pork chop fat was the star ballerina. The pork chop meat was the male dancer holding up that ballerina in a romantic pas-de-deux. It was the absolutely perfect pairing. (Anyone who uses that pork chop and ballet to make a joke about "Swine Lake" will be thrown off Yelp permanently.) Suffice it to say, I liked the meat course. Accompanying that was the potatoes au gratin of your dreams, And the green beans with bacon of your dreams. I never wanted to wake up. * * * If you come to Berlin, Come to Prater. Skip the Biergarten. Eat at the Restaurant. Deutscheland, Deutscheland Uber Alles!

The asparagus came with a great butter and breadcrumbs sauce which drizzled on the potatoes was amazing. As silly as it sounds the boiled potatoes were the best I've ever had. We finished with apple strudel with ice cream, which was just ok, maybe a 3 for me. The waitress was quite surly and we had to chase her down to order after sitting there for 15 minutes without anyone coming to the table. The veal schnitzel and steak entrees were also delicious. My server spoke little English, so knowledge of German would be a plus if dining here. The restaurant seems to be known for their beer and has quite a selection, however, a smaller wine menu is also available. I would definitely recommend making a reservation or coming early.
