This place had me at duck. No need for the English menu. Thanks Yelpers for the photos. The plate reminded of Thanksgiving with better substitutes. No time to count calories here. The cabbage stewed in apples had a fruit forward acidic note. The greens were also cabbage but ate like kale. The duck was wonderfully crispy and tender inside. Not seasoned heavily but sits on a pool of rich gravy. What I thought was mash potatoes were actually potato dumplings with a buttery taste and somehow light and filling. Had it with a draft pilsner. Oddly the restaurant is subterranean with "biergarten" decoration. My server was pleasant, but with a no fuss attitude. He's been asked a hundred times for recommendations.

    180. Braiseknuckle of Pork

I'm not sure whether or not the food and decor are actually traditional, but if you're looking for that picturesque German beer, giant bone-in pork shank, and generally hardy cuisine experience, this is the place for exactly that. Heads up, this place has a major deal worked out with tour groups. Located a short walking distance (less than 10 minutes) from a number of major Berlin landmarks like the Berliner Dom (Berlin Dome), the Neptunbrunnen (Neptune Fountain), and the Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss (Berlin Palace), they're apparently often booked up. So even when the tables look empty, there's a good possibility those are already reserved. We got very, VERY lucky when we came here to eat. My family came with a couple who coincidentally met their former tour guide who happened to already be eating there. Through that tour guide who was familiar with the Gasthaus Mutter Hoppe's manager, they arranged for that couple to get seats as well as for the three of us to squeeze onto the bar. For most of the time we were there, the rest of the restaurant seemed almost completely empty, all other customers being squeezed into the bar area and the tables under the spiral staircase. Then as we were finishing up, the place was suddenly swarmed. So looks like they have outdoor seating at times and I don't know if those are regularly available, but the weather was not great at the time we went, so everyone opted for the indoors. You go in, follow through the short L-hallway, then descend a spiral staircase into the actual restaurant. The restaurant itself is a basement with multiple rooms, including a bar area with tables, more rooms in the back, and making use of the space beneath the staircase. I mention this because I didn't see if there was an easier way for someone handicapped to get down. So just another heads up. (If you know of some way, please message me and I'll edit this.) The overall homey, low-ceiling aesthetic and intimate layout makes it FEEL like a hidden gem. At the bar, an older gentleman acted as both the bartender and waiter for us and he was great. He was funny, friendly, was great about checking in with us, and while he did press us for tips, it was in a funny way. Portions are large all around, and we got to try a lot of side dishes with each entrée we ordered. The potato soup was simple but creamy and tasty. My parents' favorite was the Berlin's Pickled Knuckle of Pork my mom ordered, though my dad's literal dream dish was the Braiseknuckle of Pork. I had a lot of fun with the game menu and got the Aubertus-pan with its combination of deer and wild boar. All the dishes we had were delicious and a delight when they arrived then dig through. Third heads up though, because of the consistently large portions, none of us finished our food (my family and the previously mentioned couple). And since we were traveling, none of us had a way to store it afterward. If you don't have a fridge where you're staying, then just leave the leftovers. And I say this because some of our party got sick after actually trying to eat the leftovers the next day. Remember that while reheating kills bacteria, it doesn't kill the protein toxins already released. Overall, we had a great experience. It still ultimately feels like a tourist trap to me, but we got lucky in both getting seating as well as finding dishes that suited us. My dad got to fulfill his dream of having a Germany beer and a giant bone-in pork shank in a traditional German restaurant in Germany. If you happen to come at a time when they have seat available, I'd recommend trying it if you have the time and if you're looking for this sort of experience.

The only good thing about this restaurant is - the colorful napkins haha woohoo

Hahaha it's so bad that I got a good laugh out of it, for the laugh, one star. Lol A Total touristy trap. 1,Service - Rude and greedy. "Sir, you have water here?" "NO. YOU BUY WATER". "Sir, accept ApplePay?" "NO, Gimme credit card. Pay a bit more ja? More than 10%!" (Hahaha, I tried really hard not to laugh out loud there). 2,FOOD - I think they just trying to get ride of some old ass meat and deep fried it, no sauce no flavor no taste. The Schnitzel was dry plain thick piece of plastic hahaa. Omg, how can good taste so bad...I a amazed. Poor dead cow. :D def never coming back again, I'd rather not eat and save some space in stomach for ice cream.

Good service, good food and they accepted us after the plan eatery kitchen was "closed". I and the tables around me had the braised pork knuckle. Very good..crispy and soft skin mixed and juicy meat. Very glad we stumbled upon this. Nice selection of juices if you are wanting non-EtoH. Plan to visit while here great selection!

While visiting Berlin, I really wanted traditional German food because I can get other cuisines at home easily. I was at Alexanderplatz and tried walking farther away from the area, but then I stumbled upon this place. Although it did seem a little touristy, I was starving, so I went in and gave it a try. It was asparagus season, and that is what I ordered. I was actually pretty satisfied with my meal. I will try to make it myself at home because I also cook. I like gathering ideas when I travel. The atmosphere and food are in fact quite traditional. It gives you what you want. Later in my trip I was able to research a better traditional German restaurant in town with lower prices. The service was excellent and made all the difference.

    Spinach Grattin

Traditional German decor, food and drink can be found in Mutter Hoppe. I was pleased to see quite a few vegetarian main dishes listed under "Not Fish or Meat" on the menu, plus some veggie soups, salads, sides and appetizers. I ordered a main of Spinach Gratin which was hearty, delicious, filling and served with a generous side salad. Riesling was lovely, prices reasonable, staff helpful and full of good-natured banter. Very glad to have stumbled upon Mutter Hoppe - it was a delightful and unexpected discovery.

Apparently this restaurant is on every tourist brochure, but for me it's really just a 3/5 eating experience. Pro: generous portion, good beer, love the old-fashioned decor. It's a shame that the customer service didn't go along. Probably it's a culture thing, but the waiter and two waitresses were almost rude. Looked like they didn't want us here and all were in a bad mood. I felt very unwelcome and won't recommend. It's really sad to see a restaurant with such potential ruined by its customer service. The food itself was good, but I would go somewhere else for the Eisbein(pork knuckle).

We came here after having been turned away by an Indonesian restaurant that was "full for the night". We are so glad that fate brought us here instead of that Indonesian restaurant!! What were we even thinking anyway -- forget the Indonesian food, get the local specialities!! Ordered the schnitzel as well as the meatballs and both were executed perfectly. Schnitzel was hot and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside -- not overly salty either. Meatballs were juicy and packed with flavor from the minced onions that they had mixed in. The beer (we ordered a Pilsner) was the best that we had tried in all of the Berlin and Dresden restaurants that we visited. I believe it is from some small private brewery affiliated with the restaurant somehow. Whatever they are doing, they are doing it right, so definitely order the house beer. Super cozy seating (you'll probably be sharing a table with other guests) and packed all night long but amazing vibes and casual comfort food. Would come back if I ever visit Berlin again!

We tried to go to a nearby Greek place but they were full and kind of rude too. We walked over here and the place was empty at 6:30 pm so a bit worried. No need. German food can be hard to find in Berlin…read more You can find German food at Prater Garten. Prater Garten has a double distinction. Outdoors, it has the oldest biergarten in Berlin. Indoors, it has an upscale German restaurant of distinction. The biergarten is not my style. If I am going to spend all day sitting outside drinking beer, I want the location to be outstandingly beautiful. Prater Garten's Plain Jane courtyard doesn't cut it. The indoor restaurant though is a different story. This is the traditional German restaurant of your dreams. The Gaststatte was the culinary peak experience of a month of serious Berlin eating. * * * Prater Gaststatte looks just the way you would expect a German restaurant to look. Dark woods. Wainscotting. Cream walls. The menu for both food and drink are limited, although they do change seasonally. This means that they make the same dishes over and over and over again. They have brought them to a high level of perfection. They only serve three beers at Prater Gaststatte, beers they brew themselves. I have no doubt those beers are wonderful. However, Prater Gaststatte had the Holy Grail of what I had come to Germany looking for Artisanal German Schnapps and Artisanal German Distilled Spirits. Bars in Berlin just don't carry those. Prater Gaststatte had a curated selection of six. (Actually a curated selection of five. The sixth item was a traditional Czech rarity.) Indiana Jones had just found his treasure. German Spirits are strong. Judiciousness limited my consumption to three. I went with a Nordhauser Doppelkorn, a Dirker Hasselnussgeist and a Stahl Birnenschnaps. Doppelkorn is a German alternative to vodka. It is 76 proof, just slightly weaker than a traditional vodka. It can be made from any of five different grains, but the rye-malt combo is the most common. The Nordhauser is an eminently superior alt-vodka - consummately smooth yet full of taste. I could have done a string of those happily. The Dirker and Stahl were both schnapps: hazelnut and pear respectively. I have never had a beverage like the hazelnut schnapps. It was not a liqueur. It was a strong brandy. Nothing sweet or cloying here. It was commanding like a brandy but smooth like the Doppelkorn. The hazelnut taste was overwhelming. It was as baritone and nutty as an Amaretto. An utterly unforgettable beverage. I stuck my neck out by going with a pear brandy. Most pear brandies are awful. I had had one and only one in my life that was good, the Finnish product Xante. Nothing is as good as Xante. Xante tastes like the canned pears served in heaven. But the Stahl Birenschnapps impressed. Nothing cloying. A real fresh pear taste. I was a very happy guy. * * * Note that although my beverages were outstanding, The food was even better. Given the quality of my distilled spirits, that last sentence is saying quite a lot. Never mind the strawberries I had for dessert. It is the beginning of strawberry season in Germany, And my meal had been so substantial that anything other than fruit would have been a crime. Spring is asparagus season in Germany. German restaurants will have one third to one half of all the dishes be asparagus dishes. I ate my fair share of mediocre asparagus dishes elsewhere in Berlin. The cream of asparagus soup at Prater Gaststatte is utterly to die for. Nothing tastes more like asparagus than that cream soup. And good cream soups are one of the fundamental pleasures of life. However, the headliner act which blew me away was their Brandenburger Pork Chop. A Brandenburger Pork Chop is a thick double-cut pork chop. The only way to get a "good" pork chop in the United States is to go to a steak house and pay steak house prices. American steak houses typically cheat by cooking it in apple juice so the pork chop gets caramelized. You eat well, but you are still covering up a ho-hum pork chop. This was a we-don't-have-to-hide-under-anything superlative pork chop. Yes there was about a tablespoon of red cabbage on top of the pork chop. It was like a maraschino cherry on top of a huge slab of meat. That pork chop had nothing to apologize for. It was a magnificent piece of meat. Easily a third of it was outer fat - outer fat that had been broiled to perfection. The pork chop fat was the star ballerina. The pork chop meat was the male dancer holding up that ballerina in a romantic pas-de-deux. It was the absolutely perfect pairing. (Anyone who uses that pork chop and ballet to make a joke about "Swine Lake" will be thrown off Yelp permanently.) Suffice it to say, I liked the meat course. Accompanying that was the potatoes au gratin of your dreams, And the green beans with bacon of your dreams. I never wanted to wake up. * * * If you come to Berlin, Come to Prater. Skip the Biergarten. Eat at the Restaurant. Deutscheland, Deutscheland Uber Alles!

Just noting that as of this review the hours are incorrect on Yelp so better check the website…read morebefore you go. It opens at noon, not 6pm on Saturdays. There are plenty of tables with communal seating. It wasn't super busy when I was there but admittedly the weather was pretty poor so I imagine it gets buzzier when the sun is out. Overall, didn't wow me, but it was a nice stop and I'd recommend for someone wanting a chill biergarten to visit in Berlin.
