Great German food! We had three different plates between four of us and they were all spectacular. I recommend the homemade meatballs. The currywurst and the bratwurst were excellent. The portions were large. I enjoyed the side of potato salad also. Sausages came with fries or chips. The service was good. There is seating inside and out. The prices were super reasonable. Did I know what a pork knuckle was prior to coming here? No. Did I ever think I would eat something called a pork knuckle? No. Do I want another one? No, not really. But it seemed like a must-get while here at Standige and honestly no regrets. It's a big...pork knuckle. I really don't know how to describe it. Crispy skin, big bone, fatty. I enjoyed a few bites of mine with the Berliner Weisse. 10/10. Where is this review going? I really don't know. This is a great option near the train station for classic German fare (like PORK KNUCKLE and 9 kinds of potatoes) and we even got to sit right on the water. It's not cheap! We had a reservation here for a party of 3 on a Saturday night around 6PM. It was a little bit hectic to find an available table because it was really busy, but thankfully it wasn't difficult to find outdoor seating. We came here with a friend who spoke German, so our experience was pretty smooth without any communication issues. We ordered 3 main dishes to share with some famous German beers: 1. Bio Bratwürste: 2 coarse bratwurst, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, mustard 2. Krosse Schweinshaxe: grilled pork knuckle, sauerkraut, fried potatoes, mustard 3. Der originale Elsässer: original Alsatian, sour cream, bacon, onion flatbread (kind of like pizza) It was my first time eating famous German foods in Berlin. The food and drinks were great! So we asked at our Hotel where we might get a good Easter Dinner around Berlin Mitte. He immediately recommended this place so we thought we could give it a go. After all, it was a beautiful warm Spring day on Easter, so what could be better than dining by the Spree and watching the water taxis go by? Pretty much anything, truth be told, as far as this place is concerned. Okay, so this place has an EXCELLENT location and lots of outside seating. That is great in concept but in practice, forget about your sense of smell because there are TONS of smokers in Berlin and they have no such thing as a No Smoking Area unless you eat inside. And if they aren't smoking, then they are vaping, and much of the seating along the river is shared, so plan on getting a lot of second-hand smoke during your visit (They are probably 10 years behind the US in protecting the rights of non-smokers, and it was the most irritating thing about our trip) Good news: inside dining is smoke-free, so we ate inside. Ordered a couple of drinks and we were asked what we wanted. We were still undecided so we asked for a couple of minutes. Maybe something got lost in translation because it was close to 30 minutes before we saw the waiter again and were able to order. We should have left then and there, but sadly, we ordered. And waited. And waited. And then the food showed up. Now I am not an expert in German cuisine, but we DID have several Cologne-Art dining experiences in Cologne, and once in Berlin where we went to a Kolsch-featuring restaurant. And without a doubt, every other dining experience we had was vastly superior to this place both in terms of value-for-money and for general taste and freshness. In a word, this food was not good. Lettuce in our salad was wilted, meatballs were cold, and there were pork bone chips in the sausage, and nothing about the food made us happy we had chosen this place. Overall, we have been in Europe for the past two weeks and this is definitely the worst value and worst food we have had the entire time we have been here. Obviously, the beer is great, after all, this is Germany, but they are clearly skating by on their location and beer selection and not on their food quality or value. Don't even get us started on service... I know that service is different here and they don't shift the seatings the way they do in the US, but there is a difference between not hurrying a customer up and completely ignoring them, and unfortunately this place excels in the latter. If you find your self in the area and want to grab a great beer, and don't mind getting asphyxiated by second hand smoke, then this place might deliver. But if you are looking for a great meal that you'll be pleased to recollect after you say Chuss to Berlin, then I have two words for you: keep walking! read more

Some would call this a tourist trap given the location and higher prices, but I thought everything was very thoughtful, from the international menu with cute drawings to menu items that stayed true to local cuisine. We didn't enjoy the things we ordered, but that was moreso from our menu choices and taste than any issue with the cooking. Is it midnight, is it 6 p.m. who knows when you're riding on the Metro and arrive in Germany's best town, I know this because my present company has been elsewhere and checkpoint charlie makes it official. Remember when you could have walls LOL. Okay I'm an American so I opted for what I know, Bratwurst and Sauerkraut or however you spell it. I have to admit I love the way the spell shit in this town, with backwards letters or whatever this crazy alphabet is. I had a crazy ex girlfriend who insisted she knew German, she didn't she was in fact a verruckte hure as well ;) The food, man the food was so good, grilled to perfection and buried with toppings. My travel partner had schnitzel of some kind and well it was big, juicy and delicious. Like this town The Bier was cold, a bit dark and delicious. If you want a really good feel of Berlin, the clubs, the town and the food then I suggest you watch the movie Atomic Blonde. It really is a good representation of it all. This place had great service, great prices and some of the nicest people you will find in Germany. I should point out everyone was kinda awesome in this town, even though we arrived at 3 a.m. and our hotel was closed we made the best of it and found a swankier more posh hotel thanks to a hotel rep that looked like he could have been my brother. so so weird.... read more

The pizza was delicious; they call it flat-bread here. It's right on the river so the views are beautiful. Add the fact they keep refilling your beer glass every time it's empty, you've got a perfect thing going. What wasn't clear from the waiter is that the refill of beer isn't free. You get charged for each glass but it wasn't so bad. 3 beers and one pizza cost 17€. They have heaters and blankets for the outside seating area. It was about 60*F but still enjoyable. read more

This place is located right by the water which made for a great background while eating. Each chair outside had a blanket folded on it which I thought was great just in case it got cold at the same time served well as pad for the chair. Roast Beef - cold sliced roast beef was a little different than I was used to but the meat was still pretty good. For dipping, the dish came with home made sauce tatar or in the german version aka "remoulade". This was delicious and made the dish worth it! I liked it so much I asked the waiter how to make it. Eifeler Kartoffelsuppe mit Blutwurst - potato soup style "Eifel" with black pudding. I read the reviews on this and decided to get it anyway. The soup was not hot as readers stated but it wasn't cold either. The potato was completely pureed which was a plus because I'm not one for chunk potatoes. The black pudding was a little ball which added a nice flavor to the dish. Great company, great location, good dinner, and amazing remoulade! read more

If you are with a larger party, be sure to call ahead and make reservations because this place is very popular among locals as well as tourists from the nearby hotel. There are a substantial amount of seats available outside so if the weather is nice, be ready to sit out there (umbrellas are present to shade from the sun). Going to the ambiance inside, every inch of the wall is covered by some picture of a famous or not famous person. The history behind the actual restaurant stems back to the downing of the Berlin Wall and continued struggles from there on out. The service was friendly throughout our dining experience. Getting to the food, we all enjoyed our orders. Several in our party ordered the lentil soup that was very good, but lukewarm at best. As we were hungry and somewhat being rushed to get out before the reserved table was needed, we just ate without sending it back. For entrees, we tried the crisp pork knuckle that was excellent and highly recommended, some braised beef that was ok and some currywurst that was good. Desserts were all excellent; an apple strudel, flatbread with apples and vanilla ice cream as well as a parfait that was made with rosemary ice cream. Definitely save room for some or all of them. Overall, the price came out to about 25/euro a person for a drink each as well as entrees and desserts for the table. Buon appetito. read more

Nice outdoor tables along the Spree. It was fun to watch the boats go back and forth. Pleasant waitstaff. Paulaner dunkel and weiss beer were good. The food was pretty good. The lentil soup was good. My wife had an Alsatian pizza with shrimp that she liked. I felt an obligation to try the curry wurst, so I did. The sausage didn't have a particularly strong flavor- it was all about the ketchupy sauce and curry powder. I was never a fan of hot dogs with ketchup, so this would be an acquired taste for me. Sure, this restaurant may be a bit of a tourist trap chain restaurant but that doesn't mean their food or beer suffers. We had the curry wurst and the pork chops and both were really good. Good atmosphere to have a conversation. No music in the back ground. We shared a table with strangers which is the style in many German bars. It's not quite a restaurant I think. More a posh bar. The German food tastes really nice, I must say. Strangely enough this bar does not serve local draught beer, but beer from about 500 km more to the west in Cologne. Prices were a little high but not as high as similar places around Brandenburger Tor. There is no WiFi and the toilets are both not free for customers and not very clean. This bar is probably trying to catch you tourists who visit Berlin, so I'm going to play fair and write this review in English. First of all I must tell you about the nice part: This bar is placed in the very center of the part of Berlin which is usually visited by tourists - people who live here know that there is no true city center, so I won't call it the like. I'll say it like that: It's easy to reach, right on the other side of the lake, quite close to the station Friedrichstraße. Well, I think the prices are way too high. I was originally going for a drink and I refused to pay these "tourist prices," so I ordered a beer instead and left. They turned the volume of the television up because some customers wanted to watch the olympics and that wasn't cool either. The beer was mediocre and rather expensive. The pork knuckle was pretty good and well portioned, but the waitress messed up our order and brought the pork chop instead of the curry wurst. The pork chop was so dry it was hard to swallow. Restaurant has a fun, lively setting with customers seated at shared tables surrounded by hundreds of pictures of politicians and paraphernalia from the former Democratic Republic covering the walls. The food is representative of Rheinland gastronomy with the pork knuckle and blood sausage as local favorites. Personally, I like the Rhenish Sauerbraten which is braised beef which has been marinated in vinegar marinated beef and served with a raisin-pumpernickel-sauce, potato dumplings and apple compote. I love the play of sour from the vinegar, sweet from the applesauce and savory from the meat and potato. Another thing I love about this place, is they serve Kölsch beer in tiny, thin glasses and keep refilling them for you until you put your little coaster on top of the glass to signal that you're done. Ständige Vertretung or the StäV is a kneipe-restaurant on the bank of the Spree River in the former eastern part of Berlin. StäV is basically across the river from the TränenPalast/Friedrichstrasse U+S Bahnhof and the former Grenzübergang. This place was created to serve the thousands of people who moved from Bonn to Berlin when the German government relocated after the Reunification. It's designed to be a nostalgic reminder of the glory days of the Bonner government with their local beer and food specialties. The walls are covered with photos and mementos of Bonn, the former West German government and it's people. There is outdoor seating on the Spree Ufer embankment but we sat indoors since the night was chilly. We were a large party (7 people) and so we had a table reserved. They did a good job bringing all our food at once, though the place was packed. It didn't strike me as a "scene" place, but had more of a "lokal" feel - grown-ups eat and drink here, this is not a place the 20-somethings hang out at. We all had the beer, and everyone tried various items from the menu such as Bouletten/Frikadellen, Saumagen, Schweinshaxe, Sauerbraten, Eisbein with Sauerkraut (which was spiced especially nicely BTW). We went there so we could have some more traditional German food and it delivered well. Reservations are a must if you want to eat dinner, especially Friday nights. read more

This was a really close restaurant to our hotel that I had read really good reviews about so we decided to check it out on our first night. First of all, location: it sits beautifully on one shore of the river Spree, right next to the train station, close enough that you can hear some trains leave but not close enough so that it gets annoying. Now the important part, the food: while searching for restaurant i really wanted a german experience, and this restaurant certainly delivered. Their dishes are definitely german, the wurst and the pork steak being really good. The one downside that we found out was that they were pretty small dishes, not really enough to fill you up. A bit overpriced but very lively and even though its obviously a touristy spot you do feel as if youve sat down in the company of great history. The blood pudding is nicely spiced and tasty but go for it in whole form with the "heaven and earth" dish (served with mashed potatoes, caramelized onions, and apple compote) rather than the flatbread/pizza version.
