As my partner and I walked through the adorable streets of Mitte, we were taken by the soft warm glow of this charming restaurant. Hungry and sleepy, we both decided - this was the one. Inside you are charmed by a cozy, candle lit restaurant with an excellent variety of spirits - both alcoholic and human. Our server Manuel was a great friend, who was quick to give us advice and offer suggestions on wine and the menu. We ordered the roasted vegetables with goat cheese and the veal. Both were exactly what we needed after a long day. After dinner, we stayed for the wine and the company of Manuel. We were looking for a nice restaurant in Berlin that was not too touristy. We found a good neighborhood that was a little farther away from all the sites, and my friend just started asking people on the street if they knew where we could eat. After a few people couldn't help us, we found these two ladies who directed us to Altes Europa. We wanted traditional German food because we can get better ethnic food back at home. It's down a side street a little farther away from the hustle and bustle, and it was totally worth it. The prices were low given the quality you get. I ended up getting one of the of the most expensive specials they had on the chalkboard that day because it was still reasonably priced. I got asparagus because in the spring asparagus is king in Germany and Austria. It was totally delicious. I also got Apfelstrudel as a dessert and do not regret it. Some of the wait staff were a little distant, but the waiter we got was extremely helpful at explaining everything on the menu. We complimented him before we left. It was such a great meal, and it is totally what you need to have when you come for a visit to Germany. read more

Cool vibe, cool neighborhood, cool restaurant. Staff was extremely friendly and easy going which is a my number one thing. Short food menu but very tasty. The meatballs were just OK, a bit dry. The cheese spatzle was very good but it was more like a side dish item than main dish item to me. I'm American so perhaps that's why. The schnitzel was delicious. Everything was tasty I'm just being picky. I'd definitely eat here again. Interesting art to look at on walls. Interesting, eclectic crowd. But again, thank you to the magnificent staff. This restaurant was great all over. We arrived quite late. The staff was really friendly and accommodating. The terrasse is nice, under trees and the inside looks good, a bit like in a old movie. Enjoyed two beers and their yummy brochette (meatballs) appetizer with potato salad (total 18 Euros and we were full). Great service. We sat outside across the street because it's Corona time. Really cool scene of 40/50-something locals. My Berlin boyfriend told me their food is very Berlin-y and gave it the thumbs up. My favorite restaurant in Berlin. Amazing food. Bartenders are great. You can sit at the communal table and stay all night with no pressure to leave. I have stayed until close and they make you comfortable even if you are the only person in the place. Anytime somebody I know is going to Berlin, I suggest this place. read more

We had drinks here at 9ish. The waiter was really nice and attentive. The inside was ark and lighted with candles. It had a good vibe and I enjoyed chatting and sipping my drinks. There was a guy singing live but he only did 2 songs and he stopped and left. read more

Great cosy cafe with a relaxed atmosphere and good food. Went there on a chilly Berlin winter's evening - a perfect bolt-hole from minus 2 degrees. Service was relaxed and friendly...perhaps not the most attentive but it leads to the laid-back atmosphere. The smoking room at the back looks great but not being a smoker I didn't go in. I absolutely adore this place! Found it by accident, escaped the burdensome from Alexanderplatz and I wanted a cozy place with real local food. And I found it :-) The Gipstrasse is one of the cutest streets of this very nice neighborhood, with little artesanal shops, touristy,but still with s strong local flavor and none of the cooler than ghoulish of nearby Prenslau. The restaurant is right next to a tiny park, when the weather is nice they put tables and chairs outside. Inside are shabby chique wooden tables with low of stuff you would expect in your grandma's attic. I loved our servers, especially the one in hotpants, hey, if you have it, flaunt it! The food is amazing. We had meatballs with lukewarm potato salad, a Berlin specialty, fantastic home made farfalle with cantarell mushrooms or pfefferlinge, and roasted cauliflower with merguez sausage. Because they messed up our order, our excellent Merlot was for free. I love this place and wish we had something similar in my native Amsterdam. read more

Highly recommend this lovely restaurant/gastropub. Altes Europa has a great vibe: it's nice while still being low-key, it serves a good selection of alcohol and coffee, the food is good and reasonably priced, and there's no smoking allowed. Plus it's centrally located within a 5-min walk of U-Bhf Weinmeisterstr in Mitte. All of these make Altes Europa perfect for any kind of outing throughout the day and night, ranging from enjoying your book over coffee, to catching up with friends, to having a relaxed date. read more

I've been in Europe the past 6 weeks and this was my worst restaurant experience by far. Staff was very rude and off putting to English speakers. I ordered the meatballs and waited an hour for them until I finally asked where they were. They then told me the kitchen was closed and only had them cook my meal after I complained. I went to the bathroom and I came out to my table, chair, and beer gone. The head waiter only said sorry and didn't refund my beer. Never coming back again. read more

A really nice room with a couple seats outside (worth one star). Looks quite inviting and has rustic charm. Fairly decent selection of wines and they seem to have a daily menu which seems to change often (another star). I really wouldn't come back though to eat here as I can imagine it to be mediocre at best from what I saw on other plates (minus one star). Further, the service was pretty crap (minus two stars). No interest really in making an effort. Typical Berlin crap but in a bad way. Sometimes I let people get away with it if the place is good or at least interesting enough to return. The space itself looks very inviting with its old wooden chairs and rustic tables. But unfortunately it's just one more of the typical Berlin Mitte places with unprofessional and bored service. Two thirds of my Latte Macchiato was frothed milk, and when we mentioned it, they were like "Oh, OK..." Not a single smile, not even a "Sorry". Altes Europa means Old Europe. I've been coming to this restaurant/bar for many years because of its ineffable Berlin charm. Sadly, this place has suddenly gone quite downhill. Its as if it just decided one day to squeeze out as much money from the place as possible: the net result is much more tables have been jammed into the place and the waitstaff has been reduced to one bartender and ONE waiter for the entire place even on weekend nights. IN brief the place has lost all its charm and the regulars have stopped going. The food has also lost its punch. Maybe the restaurant needs to change its name to New Europe. read more

The food was fantastic, have know this place for a couple of years now, and loved it until tonight, when I got insulted by the bartender (or boss I even think) when paying. When not immediately leaving a tip he asked me weather "the service wasn't good enough, or what". Last time they saw me there.
