We wanted to try authentic German cuisine so we went to Zur Gerichtslaube. We had to wait for about 15 minutes before being seated. The inside was a converted court house from the 1200s, with dark wood and stain glass windows. I ordered the duck, which came with potatoes and cabbage. My personal favorite meal in Berlin as recommended by our hotel staff. We were staying really nearby and wanted to enjoy this section of the city - tucked away in a beautiful courtyard with cobblestones and many touristy places to enjoy a pint and a snack. Zur Gerichtslaube boasts a traditional German menu and we enjoyed everything from potato salad to currywurst to beef. I wish we would have ordered and tried more of the menu, but what we did have was so delightful. Service is brisk but kind and we enjoyed sitting out on the patio. This was my favorite restaurant that we dined at while in Berlin. It was small and a little bit off the beaten path but very easy to find. The ceilings in the structure were just gorgeous. Food was really delicious. I had a local white wine and my mother had a beer. We enjoyed the potato soup, goulash, and schnitzel. They had a meatball with mashed potatoes that my child enjoyed. They even gave him some vanilla ice cream at the end which made him really happy. My favorite thing was the goulash. It was really outstanding. We actually liked to dip our schnitzel in the sauce that came with my son's, meatball. The potato salad that came with the schnitzel was cold, which was unexpected, but it was so good! Everyone was really friendly and it felt like a very authentic German meal. I would definitely recommend. read more

My buddy and I came here for lunch because it looked like good place to eat from the outside and it did not disappoint. It was possibly the best meal I had in Berlin. They have English menus and the staff was friendly and timely. I'd like to go back the next time I visit. It was April when we went and about 55 degrees (13 C) outside but at least 80 degrees in the restaurant. Many establishments in Berlin are overheated for the weather (if you are wearing long sleeves and a coat outside, why would you want it so warm inside?), but this was a bit much. This is the only reason I docked this restaurant a star. The restaurant and atmosphere are the reason you come. It's in a 13th century building and the restaurant looks like it. It's charming. The food is tasty. We had a potato sausage soup--thick, rich, well seasoned with slices of top quality hot dog like sausage in it and the beef goulash, which was peppery and had "almost too much beef". The starter of Camembert in beer batter was a fantastic addition. The small salad with it was a perfect accompaniment and the cheese was mild and the batter was a nice crispy coating. This isn't French Camembert but a cheese more firm and with less tang. Plenty of Room for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon at 1 pm. Service was excellent. I highly recommend this spot but consider sitting outside if possible or check the temperature before you go in. read more

Zur Gerichtslaube is totally touristy but a great spot for some local German food in a beautiful building from 1270!! You can sit in history and try some hearty new dishes. All dishes were very good, had reasonable prices, and were quite large. You certainly won't leave hungry! An extra star for our waiter who was having fun with everyone, making jokes, and very kind. I've only seen grumpy waiters in Germany so this is very special! Carrot apricot soup with chili and maple syrup (vegan) - a seasonal special and very good Striegistaler Camembert baked in beer batter with cranberry - very delicious - recommended! Baked blue cheese pear rolled in almond and breaded (their specialty) - very good and creative Kalbsschnitzel (veal cutlet) - a solid schnitzel Half fried duck with red cabbage - perfectly cooked House beer - both light and dark were very good - recommended! This place is kid friendly they brought out a coloring book and color pencils for the kids. first we got our drinks and let me tell you the dark beer is amazing. It's like a light dark beer almost reminds me of a light root beer, really wishing I got the large size or could buy it at the store for that matter. I got the pork joint, when it came out on the plate I thought maybe I made it mistake, it didn't strike me as it being good. But one bite into that red cabbage and wow. In the center of the Nikolaiviertel, one would expect an overpriced and mediocre tourist trap, but this couldn't be farther from the truth. This is homestyle German food like grandma makes it, with big portions and reasonable prices. The feel is pub style and cozy, complete with dark wood, brick walls and romanic ceilings. We stopped for coffee and sweets. A cup of Joe with a slice of cake is 4.80 EUR. I had the Xmas special dessert, roasted apple filled with marzipan in vanilla sauce. Warm and delicious. Get a coffee with a shot of brandy and Schlag (whipped topping) and you're set for a cold winter day. Vegetarians will have a few options here, and there is a special section for healthy organic fare, if sausage and potato dumplings aren't your thing. read more

Made reservations several weeks in advance, but not exactly sure why. This place has the WORST service, not to mention a deplorably rude bar staff. The woman behind the bar with glasses was the rudest person I've ever met in Berlin. Furthermore, when the reservation was made, the restaurant did NOT indicate you had to choose from a pre-set menu. The menu itself had selections for Christmas Eve and then a separate menu for Christmas. We were forced to choose from the Christmas menu, which was horrible. We had to choose cooked goose, which was overcooked to the point that it could not be eaten. Such a terrible experience for my first visit to Berlin. I highly recommend avoiding this place as the architecture is the only reason to visit. Terrible food, rude and disgusting staff. read more

Had a nice meal here. Two starters, mains and a bottle of semi decent wine will set you back about £60 ex service. This place is amongst a number of lovely little restaurants and there is quite a bit of choice. From the menus there doesn't seem to be much between them in price. I really liked the cozy atmosphere, vaulted ceilings, and bubble windows. Aside from the dining area on the ground level, apparently they also have a gentleman's hall upstairs. Not sure what that entails, as it was roped off. Anyways, it's really interesting to eat in historical settings, in this case a former courthouse. The menu begins with an introduction to the history of the place..I remember some mention along the lines of people being sequestered outside, beaten, and spat on. Oh dear.. The service is brusque. Foodwise, the portions are large, and the food is hearty. The potato soup with bacon was really good, and I enjoyed the berry pudding for dessert. Dining partner was satisfied with her large salad. The review below me just reminded me..the coasters were oval-shaped rather than round. Curious. The waitress also blatantly put the used coasters back in the holder..lol. read more

Haha, careful with the description, former medieval courthouse restaurant, the fact that: "for the pettiest of misdemeanours ears would be lopped off, teeth broken out or the eyes would be burned with glowing irons" and that women were burned for "procuration" might make moms keep their kids from doing more than stealing coasters. Grumble, or more like for the pettiest of misunderstandings (that we weren't asking for another beer, but for an extra glass), the waitress invokes a thorny Teutonic anger.. to loosely quote Patton Oswalt. Whoo, cool it, ugly American. Anyway, the fact that this was a courthouse dating back to 1270 and the pleasant atmosphere of the wooden bar, the yellow ceiling with a design and wood panelling, and the circular Jan van Eyck stained glass on the windows blunted the fact that the waitresses were stern and attitudinal. The pickled pork knuckle was above par, tender as meat under a large flap of fat usually is. The Berlin style meatballs were a little over salted, but good and filling. The large glass of beer was peerless as expected. Really a good dining experience once I got the message to have a Coke (more like a beer) and a smile and enjoy my meal. read more

Very good German restaurant that can get very busy in the evening. There are a lot of tourists, so if you plan to go there make sure you reserve in advance. We went there without reservation and were really lucky to get the last remaining table. The food is very good. They serve some classic German dishes and also have some good beer.
