As someone from Northeast China, I found this place weirdly familiar One funny thing I realized while eating here: German food actually has a lot in common with food from Northeast China. Big pork knuckle, sauerkraut, potatoes... I felt surprisingly at home. I started with the beef tartare with egg yolk. I'd give this one around 3.5/5. It was good, but the portion was huge, and I couldn't finish it. Then I had the potato soup. Very hearty, but a little too salty for me. The best dish was definitely the classic boiled pork knuckle (Eisbein). This was the highlight. Very traditional, very rich, and the sauerkraut was excellent -- sour enough to cut through all that fatty pork. That combination really works. What makes this restaurant interesting is the whole concept. It focuses on old Berlin food from around 1900, so the dishes feel like real working-class food from that time: big portions, heavy flavors, simple ingredients, very filling and very direct. Basically: no tiny fancy plates here. The food arrives like it has a job to do. If you prefer light and delicate food, you may find some dishes a bit salty and heavy. But if you want to experience traditional old-school Berlin food, this is definitely an interesting place to try. Overall, I'd give it around 3.8/5. The Eisbein alone was worth trying. read more

3.5 stars Nante Eck is a historic restaurant on Berlin's Unter den Linden, serving traditional Berliner dishes. We started with Brotzeit a la Vater Zille, a board with various meats, cheeses, and pickles, including mett (raw ground pork with onions), meatball, smoked ham, Schinkenknacker (dried sausage), Bergkäse, Harzer Käse, herb cream, pickles, butter, and a seeded brown bread. Since it was asparagus season, we also had the Spargelsalat, a green salad with pieces of white asparagus and strawberries, along with honey mustard dressing; as well as the Beelitzer Spargel, white asparagus topped with hollandaise sauce, served with potatoes and slices of ham. For our mains, we had the Berliner Bouletten, two oversized pork meatballs in a brown gravy, served with green beans and fried potatoes; as well as the Riesencurrywurst, an oversized sausage doused in curry ketchup and served with a cucumber-potato salad with a creamy and acidic dressing. I was in Berlin for business for a day and since I arrived earlier, I took a long walking tour on my own. This restaurant is strategically located in the main street leading to the Brandenburger Tor, so it was very convenient for a quick bite. Because of its location, it is also very touristic and prices are higher if compared to other places. I had a Berliner Riesencurrywurst (13.90 Euros), a bier (3.90 Euros) and an Apfelstrudel with ice cream (8.50 Euros). They were good but nothing to write home about. Service was fast and I also made friends with two lovely ladies from Los Angeles who were sitting on the table next to mine. read more

Great location for tourists, but the restaurant is filled with locals. Delicious German fare. It was around the corner from our hotel and an easy walk from Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, etc. We went once for lunch and once for dinner. I had seen this place online, but it was by luck that I happened to end up back on the street Unter den Linden around dinner time on Saturday in Berlin. I had just finished a 4 hour walking tour and while I was shopping for souvenirs, I was keeling an eye out for a place to sit. I was recognized the name of this place and saw that many people were seated in the tables outside, so I assumed it would be a good choice. I was greeted warmly and led to a clean table outside. Inside felt very fancy compared to the outdoor dining, which was fine with me. The bathrooms were also very clean. My waiter was very friendly and spoke english, which was very nice. He gave me a menu (which included english translations or a QR code for other languages), and left me to decide. I ordered an aperol spritz and the Charlottenburger Wurstparade, per my waiter's recommendation. Both choices were very good! I think the aperol spritz was a little expensive, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. My plate hit the spot after all the walking I did earlier. The steamed and grilled sausages were my favorite (the two smaller ones). I am assuming the larger sausage was the smoked option, explaining why it wasn't my favorite. The mashed potatoes paired well with the gravy, and you cannot go wrong with German saurkraut. My meal left me full, but not uncomfortably stuffed. Convienently located along one of the most famous streets in Berlin, about in the middle between the Brandenburg Gate and the Museum Island, this place is a great stop after a day of sightseeing. They have wifi for their patrons (just ask for the password), options for everyone, and even ice cream you can grab if you need a snack! read more

I came here with a German friend, who told me this place had been the Kaiser's "take out" restaurant back in the old days. It has an old-school ambience which I liked. I had had a big breakfast, and was not particularly hungry, so I just had the soup appetizer for my meal. It was amazingly delicious. I am not normally a potato soup fan really, but the flavors and additions (sausage, bacon, etc.) made it stand out. I decided to have dessert when I saw Kaiserschmarrn on the menu, figuring it was probably a big hit with der Kaiser. Anyway the Kaisershmarrn is chopped-up pancakes with berries and sauce which is way better than it sounds. It was amazeballs and I wish I was eating it right now. My German friend got a schitzel (not sure which type) but it was colossal - overlapping his plate on three sides. Man it was huge. Looked pretty good. He gave me one tiny slice and it was excellent. On my next Berlin trip I'm going to demand we go there again and I'm getting either the schnitzel or the fried ham hock. read more

Wonderful spot just down the street from the Brandenburg Gate. We popped in for a quick bite to eat. I got the rabbit salad special and my wife got the duck. Both were extremely delicious. We were very appreciative that the wait staff let us sit at a table that reserved for a later time. TIP: In Germany, if you don't have a reservation but tell the staff you'll order and eat very quickly you'll generally get a table. Just be courteous and leave a good tip. read more

A great food start to our visit We had just arrived at Berlin on holiday and after checking in at our hotel, went to the Brandenburg Gate. Very powerful. We headed back along Unter den Linden looking for a place to eat when we saw Nante Eck. We stopped in. We were greeted and shown to a table. There was a large but well-behaved dog at the table next to us that startled us for a second, a reminder we are not in the US today. Someone brought us menus with English descriptions. Nante Eck offers a good selection of dishes, including some traditional German dishes. I decided on Nantes Flettopf, or slices of pork fillet with mushrooms, onions, and mashed potatoes. It seemed to take some time but our food arrived. I thought the plating of my dish was nicely done with the meat and other items in a gravy and three stacks of the mashed potatoes. It also tasted very good, the meat tender for pork and I liked the brown gravy. There was also a small amount of slaw, which balanced the heaviness of the meat and potatoes. All in all an excellent dinner. Again, service seemed a little slow in the end, partly due to our inexperience with flagging people down. But while the meal itself ran longer than we wanted, it was very good and filling. We even picked up a slice of plum cake for later enjoyment at the hotel. read more

I ate here with a large group of people (teachers from the U.S.) for our farewell dinner in Berlin. It was very easy to get here from the Ostbanhof train station and has a good location amongst shops. (None were open on Sunday though.) We were promptly seated and the waiters took our drink and entree orders. We had a set menu, which is convenient when you have large groups of people. Our appetizer was tomato soup. It was good, but not as good as Restuaration 1840's. I had vegetable lasagna. It was delicious, but a bit creamy and cheesy for me. Dessert was a crepe with berries. It would have tasted better with Nutella, but I gobbled it up. The restaurant was clean, servers were nice and patient, especially since we were a large group. You have to make sure you ask for "tap water" or they will bring out bottled, which ends up being expensive. (6 Euro for a large bottle!) Nante-Eck had a "Library/Newspaper" theme to it. There were books and printed papers as part of the decor. They do speak some English, but always ask first and try to speak as much German as possible. If I find myself in this neighborhood of Berlin, I'd return. read more

When in Germany have to have some Weiner Schnitzel! This didn't disappoint! Cooked perfect, moist inside. Super tender. Yum. Instead of a salad I went with sauerkraut since the good stuff is hard to find. Finished sharing an apple strudel with fresh whipped cream and a side of vanilla ice cream. Add a couple Berliner Pilsners with outdoor seating, a fun waitress made a great first dinner in Berlin. Just down the street from the Brandenburg Gate. After a long day of travel this hit the spot and no problems sleeping after that meal! read more

I was looking for a place to eat when I was on Unter den Linden in Berlin and this place caught my eye. There weren't too many eating establishments directly on that street and this one stood out and had a fair sized crowd inside. When I came in I was told I could have a table if I would be there less than an hour -- apparently they have a lot of reservations that take up their tables after 6 PM or so. I accepted the condition and got a nice table. They have a good menu with German dishes. I got a dish that had roasted pork fillets on a skewer served on a bed of potatoes and peppers. It was excellent, very hearty and filling. I had a large dark beer to go along with it. The total price was under 20 Euros. This was a very comfortable and relaxing place to have a meal with traditional german cuisine while visiting the main tourist area in Berlin. I highly recommend it! read more

This is the German fair I grew up on. I had schweinhaxen and it was very good. Place was full of locals and glad to get away from tourists.

This place clearly catered to tourists, and we were tourists. We had a bit of a wait for lunch, but not too long. Most of us ordered Currywurst and potato-cucumber salad. I'm assuming it was typical. It was tasty. It was my first introduction to Berlin restaurants not providing tap water. As an American who drinks a lot of water, it was somewhat inconvenient. I would recommend any tourist to eat lunch here to tick traditional German food off the list. read more

Best real experience Berlin restaurant ever!!!! We came to visit our friends and asked them to please find an original Berlin restaurant with original home made goodies. First of all; "Nante-Eck" is very good located in the city center of Berlin. Right were the shops and attractions are. Second; the prices are VERY VERY affordable (again, in the heart of Berlin!). Third; the "Berliner Weisse" (unique mix of beer and berry syrup) is the BEST. (I personally, LOVE the green one. if you like it sweeter ask for the red one) Last but not least; the wonderful friendly and helpful waiter. They speak English and are very helpful. i came here on my first night in berlin since i really liked the traditional german ambiance and cozy booths. i was seated by the window and really liked the decor and style of the menu, it is drawn up as a mock newspaper with daily events that are actually the food listings. the waiter was very kind and patient with my limited german. based on the low prices and after having spent the past few weeks in spain, i thought it would be safe to order a few dishes for myself along with a big glass of wine. i was wrong about this, the portions are quite large and i had way too much food! just a word of caution for those with big eyes. i started with the pot of pickles, which was literally that. almost a full size jar with about 5 full sized pickles of various variety. i was only able to eat 1-2, but they were really good. i also got an appetizer called altberliner boulettenteller that was some breads with a pate, cheese, mustards, greens, and small pickles. again i thought this would just be 1-2 pieces of small bread, but it was in fact a whole plate with about 10 pieces. the mustard was the best i'd had in a long time, and really enjoyed the nutty bread. for my entree i tried the pork knuckle (schinkeneisbein) since i really wanted classic german food. it was so large that the gentleman behind me asked if i needed his help. despite the size, it was absolutely delicious. it was juicy with a great mix of both fatty and lean meats. the sauerkraut was perfectly complemntary, and while i tasted the mashed peas and potatoes i was at this point way too full to try to eat more than a taste. read more

we stopped in for lunch after visiting museum island and before heading to brandenburg gate. we randomly picked something along unter den linden that looked like it served authentic "german" food and was reasonably priced (ie. under 10 euros). what grabbed our attention was the berliner currywurst. what sounds more authentic than that? the curry was interesting to say the least. it was spiced, but not spicy. a little sweet, but somehow salty at the same time. i don't really associate curry with german food, but somehow it worked. it still didn't mask the fact that the wurst was softer than i would've liked. the meat was almost mushy inside - kind of a weird texture for my tastebuds. the dish also came with a small side of potato salad. pork and potatoes -- of course, germany. (actually, pork and potatoes seemed to be the theme across all 5 countries we went to in central europe) one long piece of wurst covered in curry isn't really a fulfilling meal, but it was enough to carry me over for a few hours. i left feeling satisfied, but not full. read more

Quite frankly, I was pissed when my group decided to stop here, since it looked like such a blatant tourist trap. But I came around once I got some of their food in my belly! The 1/4 duck (€14.90) seemed like a risky order, but ended up being the best dish I tasted here. To my surprise, the duck had crispy skin and tender meat. It wasn't marinated or glazed or anything fancy like that, but the simplicity was quite welcome. The accompanying potato dumplings were almost impossibly light and fluffy, and the red cabbage sauerkraut was also delicious. The Flammkuchen here is good, although I would stick with the original (bacon, onion, and creme fraiche) variety and not go for the soggy/funky-looking spinoffs. If you're feeling really hungry, you might even consider ordering it as an appetizer: though caloric, the extra thin crust makes it not very filling. (And it's relatively cheap, at €8.50.) Unlike some similar restaurants, Nante-Eck has a selection (3-4 options) of salads for around €10 if you're not in the mood for full-on German cuisine. I had a salad with grilled chicken and balsamic dressing (Nantes Salatteller), and although the first half of it tasted great, it was overdressed, and the last bites were too soggy to eat. Our waitress was as friendly as could be, although she did take her time clearing our plates and giving us the check. It wasn't a problem, though, since we were having a good time sitting outside in the sunshine and watching the Unter den Linden crowds go by. Overall, don't be fooled by the goofy outfits and close proximity to the Brandenburg Gate: Nante-Eck a lot to offer, even if it does mostly cater to a foreign crowd! Finally, a PSA: Please don't order currywurst at a restaurant--not worth the money! If you want to order a Berlin specialty, go for the Bouletten (meatball): it comes with homefries-esque potatoes and green beans with bacon... need I say more? read more

I found this place on a walk to the Brandenburg Gates. I was greeted by friendly staff, and promptly ordered the Berliner Reisencurrywurst, a nice authentic German meal, and I think currywurst is characteristic more specifically to this region of Germany. The food arrived and was nicely presented, although I think it could have used a bit more seasoning. The drinks were well-priced, but the server wasn't a heavy pourer so it ended up being a wash when I ordered my second drink as a double pour. This place is worth a stop if you're looking for a well-priced meal in a comfortable restaurant in this neighborhood, but if you're willing to head to the foodie regions of the city, this wouldn't hold a candle. At the time of this review there was an enormous construction project in the street in front of the restaurant that may obscure signage. read more

Totally touristy. Staff looks a bit bored. The place has bad acoustics and I had a cake (desert) that I didn't finish because it was dry. My girl ordered a drink, only for the waitress to return to tell us that it had sold out. When I left nearly all my cake, the waitress didn't ask one's why. We saw her give our 'neighbours' an attitude when they claimed their food wasn't what they ordered (the customers decided to 'leave it', and eat the food), and when we gave her a less than one euro tip she simply didn't take it because she was now insulted. 0,3 l draught beer costs you 2,90 here. read more

After an EPIC night of partying Berlin style, with Berliners, we were so hungover, could barely make it out of the room to get anything to eat. (i'm definitely getting too old for this). This place was around the corner sorta touristy, but was a solid choice for German Food. The Potato soup was the perfect cure for my ill's. The Schnitzel was just ok nothing to write home about. Best flammkuchen I've had in Berlin. They bake it well done, with charcoal grill marks. Good house sausage dish. Excellent value and quality and location for the low price. Yes, it's touristy and has the resin drunk German peasant statue outside, but the food is lovingly made. Great people watching. Don't sit outside if you hate smoke - LOTS of smokers in Berlin, and they all smoke in the outdoor seating area. My only peeve is the waiter tried to pressure me into buying a big bottle of mineral water. She REFUSED to bring tap water. That was BS. read more

Ah where do I begin? This restaurant stole my heart. Despite the unusually long time it took for us to receive our food the atmosphere was so lovely and conversation friendly, time flew and we were finally served our food and it only took one bite to understand why it took that much time to prepare.. I ordered veal liver in red wine sauce and potatoes and it was heavenly, every bite was a carnival of flavour. I recommend Nante Eck to anyone any day. read more
