The food was very fresh and delicious but the service was spectacular. The menus are in both German and English and every server speaks English, they were also very helpful navigating the menu. Must haves are the Farmers ham with grated horseradish and pickles as an appetizer. The pumpkin soup was amazing with a hint of curry and the main course was the Wiener schnitzel was the star of the experience. The accompanying potato salad was incredibly delicious as well. 4.5 stars! Ottenthal was one of the restaurants I discovered while in Berlin. In particular, what caught my attention was the fact that it offered, by far, the best schnitzel in Berlin! So, given I was in Germany..and even though I never really dream of eating schnitzel days and nights, I had to stop by this place! I particularly liked that the restaurant offered pretty much very natural/no chemicals food. Everything was fresh and, shall I say, natural/organic...and they were committed to those types of ingredients. I also liked that despite a higher price point than most restaurants in Berlin, the staff were polite, friendly and relatable..and not a stucked up place at all! Now, when it came to the food, I loved all my dishes! The pumpkin soup was so fresh and Devine! The schnitzel..wow..shall I say, crisp and thin..and not oily at all! Eating it together with the side potato salad that was a lil sour and sweet made it a good combination without additional condiments for sure! Lastly, the Baumkuchen was wonderful! I had so much food that night that I ended up having to order Baumkuchen to go..and I was not disappointed at all! Good to try all the good things while in Berlin! Overall, I highly recommend Ottenthal! Sure, as the name suggested, Ottenthal is Austrian town..but hey..schnitzel can also be German! Go try it and you'd taste the differences between this vs other places! Recommended by locals and foreigners alike, Ottenthal (Ottenthal Restaurant & Weinhandlung), is a truly genuine experience that shines with its warm hospitality, delicious food and unpretentious ambiance. Open for dinner only, I booked a reservation in advance for Saturday evening but was pleasantly surprised that there were plenty of open spaces inside as many dined outside to take advantage of a cool, summer air. You are greeted and hosted by your server and hostess whose positive energy was matched only by her enthusiasm for her craft. I have no idea what an Austrian mother would look like but I'm convinced she's someone's dotting mother somewhere. Ottenthal prides itself on its history and its wine list even more so you would be doing yourself a disservice if you did not at least pair your meal with a drink. I started with their apéritif recommendation of their Otti Special (EUR8.50) which was absolutely delicious and the moment I knew I was in for a treat. They offered a seasonal summer menu but I opted for their pumpkin soup (EUR9.50) which was delicious, fresh and beautifully presented. You can tell that they are truly focused on sourcing local and fresh ingredients and they pride themselves on their "Bio Certification" which they've held since 2011. For dinner I went with their Cordon Bleu (EUR36.00) which was an enormous portion of veal stuffed with cheese and rosemary ham. Delicious and savory, I ultimately had to call it quits and request a take-out box (which the staff happily packed for me) so I could make room for dessert. Dessert was the standout of the meal and was their (exceedingly popular) Viennese apple strudel with whipped cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream (EUR10.50). Light and fluffy with a symphony of flavors it was the best strudel I've ever had (despite my admittedly low number consumed) and obvious why this is considered their 'darling'! Overall, though service can be a little slower (which they preface on their menu), the amount of love and joy that is put into their food and craft makes this easily worth the wait. Best meal I had on my trip to Berlin! The servers were really enthusiastic and seemed happy to be working there and to tell you about the food. I like seeing servers work as a team. They recommended an aperitif that had champagne and woodruff herb tincture that they made -- this was delicious. But the special appetizer was the star of the night -- carpaccio fish with pickled rhubarb, avocado, cucumber, and herbs. Really creative and delicious. I then had the classic wienerschnitzel -- yummy, but let's be honest it is fried meat. I'm glad I got it, and I think it was a good example of the "genre" (not to sound too pretentious), but it's not something I need to order again. The restaurant was empty when I arrived at about 6:30, but when I left it was completely full of happy-looking diners. Really a lovely place. Wow, a super great Austrian restaurant where everything was very good. The Austrian Wiener Schnitzel was very good as everyone has commented. The only time I had better was in Vienna. The place is very busy so we got lucky as two of us got in under the wire of reservations. Ottenthal is an elegant restaurant serving creatively plated, locally sourced German-Austrian food. The service was attentive to all our needs, including our time constraints, and the décor of the restaurant was simple and beautiful. We started off the meal with a light, refreshing Austrian beer, and I chose to order an entrée of crusted, baked Saibling (char), which was served on the plate beautifully with a light, refreshing salad, polenta fritters, and beet sauce. The entire dish was delicious--perhaps not a single element stood out, but the combinations of cooked and raw, warm and cold, savory and slightly sweet worked so well together. We also had the fillet of deer, served with mushrooms, bread dumplings, greens, and a variety of other fresh vegetables. The deer was tender, juicy, and gamey, and similar to the last dish, the combination of all the different elements came together so nicely into perfect bites. To finish our meal, we found an item on the dessert menu that we had tried to look for everywhere in Vienna, but were not successful in finding: Kaiserschmarrn. This is a classic Austrian dessert (said to be one of the favorites of Kaiser Franz Josef, hence its name) made of chunks of pancakes filled with raisins, and this restaurant served the dish with homemade plum jam on the side as well. The Kaiserschmarrn was sweet and decadent, and the plum jam provided a nice tart flavor--though this definitely was not a dish you could eat too much of or eat every day, it was definitely enjoyable and a great end to dinner. Overall, this was a great restaurant offering a wide variety of delicious German-Austrian dishes and great service, and I would definitely be interested in coming back to try out more of their creative plates. read more

As someone who had not tried Austrian food, I was pleasantly surprised. Fabian our waiter set the expectation pretty high from the beginning and he delivered an excellent service and gave us details on how Austrian cuisine is different from Deutsch. All wines on the list are from Austria, we settled for Fabian recommendation an 80 euro bottle of a Cab like red- the wine was good but not worth the price. We got there on a hot humid day and classy decoration along with air conditioner was certainly a big plus. We both ordered the Wiener Schnitzel (don't except a chicken or pork Schnitzel here)- salad was tasty. You will notice a hint of sugar in their potato salad. The highlight of night was the thin made to perfection main course and the apple strudel - it was a great introduction to Austrian cuisine. Definitely on the pricy side. read more

My long stay in Berlin ended on St Martins Day (Nov 11) on which southern Germans and Catholic Austrians and Czechs historically eat roast goose. I wanted goose, and located Ottenthal very close to where I was staying (Savignyplatz). It was a big night, I had no reservation, and the restaurant was crowded, but they kindly accommodated me at a single table. And then, the whole staff treated me as a honored guest - slash - old friend. An excellent meal in a happy, attentive and very welcoming environment. It was so packed that they had to turn away folks without reservations who were looking for holiday goose. It was a joy to have a wonderful Austrian "gemütlich" meal in the heart of old Prussia! Out of no reason I'm suddenly in love with Schnitzel, so my meals in Berlin was overwhelmingly about Schnitzel in the past 4 days. I felt this is the best Schnitzel among all others j tried including a Michelin stared restaurant. It was tender, well pressed, crispy and also delicious. To be honest it's usually difficult to judge a taste of any deep fried food incl. fish & chips, but there is actual difference. I guess you'd have to try with your own mouth. My wife and I were so delighted with our first dinner at Ottenthal that we booked a second meal there during our three days in Berlin. The restaurant itself is a long, narrow room, a warm, comfortable space with a bar at one end where you might want to consider dining if the restaurant is full, as it was both nights were there. On our first visit, we joined a few other couples and large groups of families and friends: it felt like we were slipping into a friendly, neighborhood scene. On our second visit, the restaurant was full of large groups of businesspeople attending a trade show in the city. Both nights, though, service was friendly and our servers spoke decent English, compensating for our non-existent German. From the reviews I read, I expected good-quality food and Ottenthal delivered. But beyond being tasty and well-prepared, our meals had many unexpected touches that showed that someone in the kitchen was paying attention to more than just quality preparation. Here's an example: at our second meal, my wife ordered noodles with chanterelles. The dish was not only delicious, but it was beautifully garnished with herbs that complemented the richness of the (cream) sauce that dressed the noodles. At our first meal, we both had Arctic Char that was accompanied by an arugula pesto and a fresh salad of frisee, arugula, and other greens. Not simply a garnish, the salad was a crunchy and slightly bitter contrast to the perfectly cooked and more unctuous fish. That night, my meal opened with a salad of wild, bitter greens that included arugula, chervil, and a number of herbs and lettuces that I couldn't identify. All I know is that they were delicious. At our second meal, I ordered the Chicken Supreme--a seasoned, lightly breaded and fried chicken breast served with that mixed frisee salad and delicious, light herb dumplings. The chicken was not only perfectly cooked and juicy, but it was totally greaseless. We're fans of Austrian wines and I was delighted to find so many great choices on Ottenthal's list. Dozens of vintages of gruner veltliners, blaufrankisch, and zwiegelts, along with blends. On our second visit, we enjoyed a 2011 Meinklang Graupert, made from grapes raised in a vineyard that hasn't been pruned or weeded. There's a wine store in the restaurant where you can pick up something that catches your fancy. Many of the dishes are made from organic ingredients and the wine list features organic and biodynamic wines. read more

This was a fantastic find thanks to Yelp! Had been underwhelmed with the German food on my trip to Leipzig and Berlin and was going to settle for Spanish tapas on my last night. But I passed Ottenthal on the street and the picture of the soldier on horseback out front struck me as slightly humorous. So I Yelped it and the reviews convinced me to try it. After some initial confusion as to whether I could in fact eat dinner at the small bar in back (as recommended by a Yelper), I settled in for the best German food I've ever had. OK, technically I know it is Austrian. And the restaurant has a great back/brand story of being run by a family from, you guessed it, Ottenthal in Austria. And I know that matters. So let's call it Hapsburgian empire food. As it was a seasonal special, I had the goose dinner. Having never had goose this was a revelation (at least as they prepared it). Imagine a cross between the best turkey leg in America or Europe and authentic Peking duck in Beijing. Rich, moist dark meat, under perfectly crisped skin, with a melt-in-your-mouth fat layer in between. This was accompanied by light and flavorful red cabbage, a potato dumpling, and kind of steamed apple (quince?) with creamy marzipan core. The dumpling was a bit gummy and heavy for my taste, but that is as much because I have been Paleo for a while and any starchy dish can strike me that way. The apple/quince was unique. Can't say I loved it but was very glad to try it. The meal was paired with a great Pinot noir and had a lovely light dessert with a touch of sweetness but not too much. If you are in West Berlin near Savignyplatz and want locally sourced, largely bio/organic forward--looking German/Austrian/Hapsburgian cuisine, you should absolutely try Ottenthal. read more
