I love this spot. Yes, it's a tourist attraction with it being located in walking distance to the Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Memorial, but it's also fun for locals and anyone that enjoys a hearty German meal and some good beer. They've got 17 beers on tap, one more delicious than the next. I felt right at home again with my Berliner pint in my hand. French fries are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside served with lots of mayo on the side (yes, us Germans like mayo with our "pommes"). I also had the flatbread pizza topped with curry chicken and pineapple - super yummy. Had it not been so big and hadn't I filled half my body with beer, I would have ordered another flatbread (the meat combo one sounded terrific). My brother and I also split the herring filets in cream sauce with apples and onion over steamed dill potatoes - another winner that did justice to my childhood memories of this German dish. Every evening after 5pm the Berliner Republik has a beer "stock market". Beer prices change with demand and consumption, which could also lead to a "beer market crash". Pay attention to the changing prices on the TVs and make sure you snag your waiter at the right moment to profit from some low brew prices. Fun and entertaining whether you're in a group or looking to make some friends! Drunkenness is guaranteed!

    Appel strudel for dessert.

My girlfriend and I were in Berlin for one night, so we needed to make it count, when it came to finding a place to eat and drink German beer. She heard of this place that was described as basically a beer stock market, and it wasn't terribly inaccessible from where were staying, so it seemed like good as place as any to try to make that one place. Although it doesn't reflect to how hard we had to work in order to get there, under normal circumstances, Die Berliner Republik should be easy to get to via local metro train S-bahn or U-bahn whatever; all the trains were screwed during our visit due to some catastrophic accident, so I can't really confirm or deny ease of accessibility. But there's a train stop access like nearly right in front their door, so it probably is. It should come as no surprise that a place known for being a beer stock market is a big tourist draw, and naturally on a Saturday night, the place was almost completely packed when we got there. It's unclear on seating etiquette is upon arrival, as there's no signs saying to wait to be seated nor did we know to take an open table if we saw one. A lady who presumably worked there told us that it was about a 30 minute wait for a table, in English, which in itself is a surprise considering almost nobody spoke any English in Berlin as far as I was concerned, but we ended up taking two open bar seats anyway, and nobody said anything. Now seated, I was able to really soak in the view and atmosphere of the place, and as mentioned it was packed and busy, but in a jovial and lively way. Up on the walls are large screens with basically stock market displays, but of the various beers available on site, and how they were trending and subsequently priced at the moment. It was my understanding that the prices change every 3-5 minutes based on how they're selling, and it's wholly possible to get beer pretty cheap if ordered at the right time. We were fortunate to have witnessed "a crash," where they ring a bell, and all beer is sold at its lowest cost, and it's a mad rush to get orders placed and locked in at that cost. It's an interesting concept that's both functional as well as unique at attracting attention and business. Needless to say, I did quite my share of drinking while I was there. As for the food, being in Germany for a night meant that we'd have to order things like sausages of varying types. I don't remember what mine was called, but it a massive wurst, it came with stewed red cabbage, as well as the most phenomenal mashed potatoes I can remember having in ages. Seriously, the sausage was delicious, the red cabbage went with it way better than I thought they would have, but the potatoes really were the most memorable part of the meal. I don't know what they did with them, but they were probably the best mashed potatoes I've had in a really, really long time. Now I don't want to be too critical about the service, as I'm pretty sure there's a lot that can be chalked up to simply cultural difference and the fact that the place was slammed as I already stated. But service here was slow and inattentive. I told myself numerous times throughout my tour of Europe that "maybe that's how it's done in Europe," but it was still like 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged our presence at the bar. The bartender was a nice and young guy that actually spoke very good English, but I was admittedly growing agitated by the lack of acknowledgment after as long as we had waited. Overall, the experience was positive. The interesting concept of the restaurant makes for fun, the food quality was pretty decent, and I got to sample a good bit of German beers that I'd never heard of. The service is what prevents it from being five stars in my opinion, but overall I think it's a good place, and I'm glad I went here with my one available meal in Berlin.

Beer 'stock exchange', now that's something you have to experience! Prices of the beer go up or down depending on demand! Definitely a cool thing to check out if you are in the area! The food was pretty good as well. We got the Italian pizza and the currywurst. Both tasted pretty amazing. We set outside right by the river and just enjoyed people watching and the boats go by. The waitress was really friendly but that place is a little understaffed! She definitely could use some help but definitely did her best to accommodate us. Also what I found interesting is she took our order on an iphone! I really thought she was texted when she was just standing near our table but she was just waiting for us to give her our order. Definitely an interesting place!

This is a very nice place where you can taste lovely beer and German food at a good price. I liked everything over there, the place is cozy with a tipical German look. On the wall they have TV showing the realtime cost of beers on the market. The staff is nice and welcoming. They serve traditional German food, and it's tasty, with a good variety of beers. I took the 3 type sausages dish, in this way I was able to taste a good variety of their food, and it was not disappointing. I oredered a 500ml weiss beer too and it was lovely. The bill was under the everage, would love to go back there

Within walking distance from our hotel, Melia Berlin. It is one of many restaurants that has outdoor seating overlooking the Spree river. Service was great, everyone speaks English, and there were a lot of options on the menu. I tried currywurst, which was pretty good, but heavy, especially washed down with all that beer! We also got a side of sauerkraut, which I really enjoyed - nice and tangy (and good for digestion. Yay probiotics!).

The restaurant is located right next to the river Spree. And it sort of in the tourist area. It's always full of people. I tried to make an appointment with then for brunch. But it got free table till one and half month later. Well, that's say the restaurant must be great. So I paciently waited. Finally the waiting was finished. My partner and I carry our hungry got to this place. Wow, it was really great place. Much better than I expected. I have been to lots of brunch in berlin so far. This is one of the restaurants, which offered really lots of different choices. The food itself was really tasty as well, as a lunch buffet, that's quite rare. There were salat, meat, fish, bread, cereal, dessert and of crouse, fruit. There are most done with the German kitchen way. It is prefect place for the people who loves or likes to try something local. After 3-4 around with the biggest plate in the restaurant. I was totally full, really happy. The only request I had is, I do have they offed more fruits. It wasn't than much when I was there. The other thing I did really enjoy was the view. We were very lucky, our reservation table was inside the restaurant, but there were serval tables outside were available , so we just asked them, if we could changed it. The stuff here were really friendly, even it was quite full in the place. And the best thing, the weather was really nice. So we were having brunch next to the River Spree, it was not the only our tummies were feeling happy, also our mind. We did enjoy it really much. Inside of the this place also had it own charm. There were lots of photos hanging around the wall, it was quite interested and historical. The whole is like photo studio or sort of photo exhibition feeling but with people drinking and eating. At the end, this place didn't disappointed me. I could see myself will pay a visit again in the future.

Our first dinner here in Berlin was a great experience. Our server was super cool and friendly. We got some good German Bier, a wiener schnitzel, and pork knuckles. Admittedly, I didn't like the knuckles, but we loved the ambiance of the place! This is definitely a great place to hang out, drink, and eat with a group of people.

Sooooooooooo.... After am awesome workout at the gym on Christmas wandered rhe streets of Berlin in search of a culinary introduction to "Yole tide". Almost ended up at am Irish and an Italian restaurant but the universe directed to Republik. The food was phenomenal. The wait staff were fluent in English and German (great as my English sucks ). They served promptly and with professionalism and courtesy. Definately coming back.

It is not fancy, but great lively place with fantastic traditional food. Place seems to always have people, great great place to come for a beer and a great snitzel, roasted duck or pork knuckle.

When in Berlin this is a great option. Selection of food & beer is top notch. Atmosphere is lively & fun. Service is attentive, helpful & prompt. The faux stock ticker on the beer indicating price fluctuations is a clever idea. Fun. Prices flucuate so enjoy the occasional discount.

Pork knuckle is actually quite huge.. And very tasty!

Pork knuckle dish lived up to its hype.. Fresh, tasty, and oh so tender!!! Sides were good, but perhaps need more seasoning. The German beer selection is excellent!

    So far the beers good.

We came here after having been turned away by an Indonesian restaurant that was "full for the night". We are so glad that fate brought us here instead of that Indonesian restaurant!! What were we even thinking anyway -- forget the Indonesian food, get the local specialities!! Ordered the schnitzel as well as the meatballs and both were executed perfectly. Schnitzel was hot and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside -- not overly salty either. Meatballs were juicy and packed with flavor from the minced onions that they had mixed in. The beer (we ordered a Pilsner) was the best that we had tried in all of the Berlin and Dresden restaurants that we visited. I believe it is from some small private brewery affiliated with the restaurant somehow. Whatever they are doing, they are doing it right, so definitely order the house beer. Super cozy seating (you'll probably be sharing a table with other guests) and packed all night long but amazing vibes and casual comfort food. Would come back if I ever visit Berlin again!

German food can be hard to find in Berlin…read more You can find German food at Prater Garten. Prater Garten has a double distinction. Outdoors, it has the oldest biergarten in Berlin. Indoors, it has an upscale German restaurant of distinction. The biergarten is not my style. If I am going to spend all day sitting outside drinking beer, I want the location to be outstandingly beautiful. Prater Garten's Plain Jane courtyard doesn't cut it. The indoor restaurant though is a different story. This is the traditional German restaurant of your dreams. The Gaststatte was the culinary peak experience of a month of serious Berlin eating. * * * Prater Gaststatte looks just the way you would expect a German restaurant to look. Dark woods. Wainscotting. Cream walls. The menu for both food and drink are limited, although they do change seasonally. This means that they make the same dishes over and over and over again. They have brought them to a high level of perfection. They only serve three beers at Prater Gaststatte, beers they brew themselves. I have no doubt those beers are wonderful. However, Prater Gaststatte had the Holy Grail of what I had come to Germany looking for Artisanal German Schnapps and Artisanal German Distilled Spirits. Bars in Berlin just don't carry those. Prater Gaststatte had a curated selection of six. (Actually a curated selection of five. The sixth item was a traditional Czech rarity.) Indiana Jones had just found his treasure. German Spirits are strong. Judiciousness limited my consumption to three. I went with a Nordhauser Doppelkorn, a Dirker Hasselnussgeist and a Stahl Birnenschnaps. Doppelkorn is a German alternative to vodka. It is 76 proof, just slightly weaker than a traditional vodka. It can be made from any of five different grains, but the rye-malt combo is the most common. The Nordhauser is an eminently superior alt-vodka - consummately smooth yet full of taste. I could have done a string of those happily. The Dirker and Stahl were both schnapps: hazelnut and pear respectively. I have never had a beverage like the hazelnut schnapps. It was not a liqueur. It was a strong brandy. Nothing sweet or cloying here. It was commanding like a brandy but smooth like the Doppelkorn. The hazelnut taste was overwhelming. It was as baritone and nutty as an Amaretto. An utterly unforgettable beverage. I stuck my neck out by going with a pear brandy. Most pear brandies are awful. I had had one and only one in my life that was good, the Finnish product Xante. Nothing is as good as Xante. Xante tastes like the canned pears served in heaven. But the Stahl Birenschnapps impressed. Nothing cloying. A real fresh pear taste. I was a very happy guy. * * * Note that although my beverages were outstanding, The food was even better. Given the quality of my distilled spirits, that last sentence is saying quite a lot. Never mind the strawberries I had for dessert. It is the beginning of strawberry season in Germany, And my meal had been so substantial that anything other than fruit would have been a crime. Spring is asparagus season in Germany. German restaurants will have one third to one half of all the dishes be asparagus dishes. I ate my fair share of mediocre asparagus dishes elsewhere in Berlin. The cream of asparagus soup at Prater Gaststatte is utterly to die for. Nothing tastes more like asparagus than that cream soup. And good cream soups are one of the fundamental pleasures of life. However, the headliner act which blew me away was their Brandenburger Pork Chop. A Brandenburger Pork Chop is a thick double-cut pork chop. The only way to get a "good" pork chop in the United States is to go to a steak house and pay steak house prices. American steak houses typically cheat by cooking it in apple juice so the pork chop gets caramelized. You eat well, but you are still covering up a ho-hum pork chop. This was a we-don't-have-to-hide-under-anything superlative pork chop. Yes there was about a tablespoon of red cabbage on top of the pork chop. It was like a maraschino cherry on top of a huge slab of meat. That pork chop had nothing to apologize for. It was a magnificent piece of meat. Easily a third of it was outer fat - outer fat that had been broiled to perfection. The pork chop fat was the star ballerina. The pork chop meat was the male dancer holding up that ballerina in a romantic pas-de-deux. It was the absolutely perfect pairing. (Anyone who uses that pork chop and ballet to make a joke about "Swine Lake" will be thrown off Yelp permanently.) Suffice it to say, I liked the meat course. Accompanying that was the potatoes au gratin of your dreams, And the green beans with bacon of your dreams. I never wanted to wake up. * * * If you come to Berlin, Come to Prater. Skip the Biergarten. Eat at the Restaurant. Deutscheland, Deutscheland Uber Alles!

Inside, the design leans toward a hybrid of a traditional German restaurant and modern luxury: dark woods, crisp table settings, and ambient lighting create an upscale but comfortable atmosphere suitable for all occasions ranging from date nights, celebratory dinners, or refined travel meals. The general vibe feels more sophisticated than casual tourist spots, with a bustling (yet not overwhelming) ambiance. Patrons range from international tourists to locals grabbing a drink after work, and a cosmopolitan mix of languages echoes throughout the space. After a 4-hour walking tour of Berlin, our group of eight was hungry for a hearty German meal. The same morning, we made a reservation for our party of 8 for 6:30pm later that night, and we appreciated the fact that the reservation process for large parties is easy and convenient. Additionally, When we arrived at the restaurant, we were immediately seated at a large table, and our waiter kindly directed us to a QR code with a translated English menu complete with pictures. The menu itself is extensive, with a range of options (from the more familiar pretzels and schnitzel to German classics like Pork Knuckle and Munich Bratwurst). Our server was charismatic and friendly, joking with us and guiding us through his favorites on the menu. When it came time to order, he asked us if we could order in the dishes' real German names (which we subsequently butchered), and he graciously corrected our pronunciation and explained any questions we had about some of the more traditional items. Some members of our party ordered their Ofenwarme Brezn mit Fassbutter (Pretzel with Warm Butter, €3,90): a generously-sized pillowy pretzel, generously salted and served with a creamy knob of decadent butter. For my entree, I selected the Halbe Haxe (€17.80), which is a half portion of crispy pork knuckle with Bavarian sauerkraut and a bread dumpling. For being a half portion, this dish was absolutely huge (with the bone, the knuckle was almost the size of my head!). The exterior skin had been wonderfully crisped up, almost like a German chicharron, whereas the interior was a mix of shreddable "pulled-pork"-like meat marbled with succulent fat, all served atop a rich, savory gravy. The Bavarian sauerkraut had a slight tang to contrast the decadence of the dish, and the bread dumpling was dense, yet soaked up the gravy perfectly. This was the tastiest dish I sampled during my time in Berlin, and certainly a great value as well. From asking my friends, other great plates included their Saftiger Schweinsbraten vom Schopf (€19.90 - a roast pork dish with bread dumplings, potato dumplings, gravy, and Bavarian sauerkraut; very similar to the Halbe Haxe but with what seemed like pork loin), 3 ECHTE Kalbsfleischpflanzer (€21.40 - three succulent veal meatballs with mashed potatoes, gravy, and buttered onions), and Handgeschabte Käsespätzle (€17.40 - homemade cheese noodles with mountain cheese and pear, topped with fried onions and served with a side salad; basically a bougee Bavarian mac and cheese, and a great vegetarian option). Two members of our party also ordered their Ausgezogener Apfelstrudel (€8.60), which was a sumptuous apple strudel with perfectly al-dente apples, flaky pastry, and warming spices, served with ice cream and a caramel-like sauce. In terms of price point, Maximilians sits in the moderate to premium range for Berlin restaurants: obviously pricier than your average beer hall or currywurst stand, but fitting for its polished service, urban location, elevated cuisine (with huge portions, might I add), as well as its large audience of tourists. If you're ever in the area, I would highly recommend Maximilians, and I'll certainly be back to sample some of their other colossal dishes!
