This is such a great little neighborhood spot. Let's face it, when you're in Germany there is a good chance you're going to have schnitzel. This place is one of the best I've had in Berlin. The service is top notch, including the welcome beer! The food comes out hot and fresh. The flavors are well balanced and not nearly as heavy as some other schnitzel places I've eaten at. The portions are also ample. The best part... for the wine lovers, they stock wine from their very own winery. We went for tapas, about half of them were good (meatballs, trout mousse, beet spread), the others boring (potatoes, bread and tomatoes salad). The beer selection if fairly limited and prices for the wines are ridiculous by Berlin standards. Schnitzelei Mitte isn't going to open your eyes to any revelation in German cuisine, but it is super fun. Both my fiancee and I had a really good time eating there which is not something you can say about every meal. The long and short of it: 1. Schnitzel: The reason you're here and man do they deliver. If you're planning on ordering the same thing as someone else, consider splitting one because you're about to get more food than you can eat. It's large, it's fried, it's not the most amazing thing you've ever had but it's tasty. It also comes with sides, which you will not have room for. 2. Veggie Options: One of the selling points of this place, Oyster Mushroom Schnitzel! Yes, now even you vegetarians can experience what it's like to hate yourself after eating entirely too much fried German food. There are only a few Schnitzel options but there are also some small plates (German Tapas), so Schnitzelei Mitte tops most places we were looking just in vegetarian options. Very appreciated. 3. Service: The service at Schnitzelei Mitte was great. There was one quirk to it. The couple of people working there seemed to be having...... dare I say fun? It was obvious we were visiting from out of town, so they were all very helpful with knowledge and language deficiencies on our part, but they also seemed genuinely interested in our Berlin experience, and just seemed like nice people. It's a small thing but it does make the dining experience better. 4. Drinks: A few German beers and a few beer cocktails are available to make it the true schnitzel experience. I'd go with a lighter beer due to the heaviness of the food, but everyone has their own pairing preference. 5. Price: Schnitzelei Mitte is about as expensive as you'd think a pretty well thought of hotel restaurant is. 19 - 22 Euro for schnitzel, tack on a few 7 - 9 Euro beers and you're looking at something that definitely isn't cheap, but well worth it in my opinion. 6. Atmosphere: It's in a hotel but they do a pretty decent job of making you feel like you're in what could be any large beer hall in Germany. I'll probably come back to Schnitzelei Mitte next time I'm in Berlin, when I should be finding other good Schnitzel places, but dammit I liked the place, and the food, and the atmosphere, and it all just jived.
