My wife and I came to Berlin and discovered this restaurant as it was near our hotel. We found the atmosphere wonderful relaxing and staff very friendly. Our waiter was able to speak English and that helped a lot. Menus was both German and English again making it easy for us. The special menu had tune tartare and it was very good. I added a combination of oysters that were delicious. Then main menu of salmon for my wife and lobster with spaghetti and lobster bisque sauce was wonderful. No room for desert but had caffeine free cappuccinos that were very good. read more

Our cruise boat docked at the closest port to Berlin, about a 2-hour drive, but we were not going to be in that part of Germany and not make it to Berlin. So, our group of 10 booked a private guide and drivers and set out. After the initial drive and some touring, we needed lunch and our guide took us to Gendarmerie. First off, it is one of the coolest restaurants inside that I have ever seen. The large piece of art that stretches the width of the restaurant is outstanding and eye catching. There are also replica pieces of the Berlin wall used as art and a series of giant portraits of famous German actors and actresses along with John F. Kennedy. Strange combination. We were seated at a long table. Our server was excellent and very entertaining for this table full of Americans. I can only speak of the two dishes that my wife and I ordered. I had the fried pike-perch fillet, but it was served on fresh local white asparagus which was in season and highly recommended. I can say without question that it was the largest asparagus I have ever seen in my life. Full of flavor with a sauce on the side. Trouble with it was that there was too much and much of it was quite tough. I prefer my asparagus thin not tree trunks. The fish was good but a bit dry so the sauce was welcome. My wife had Konigsberger meatballs with red beetroot and mashed potatoes all in a cream sauce. They are not shy about their sauces here as the photos indicate. But, the meal was very good. At the end, knowing we wanted to divide the check, the server merely had us come to the counter a couple at a time and simply tell him what we had to eat. It all added up so we were good. End review is that it was a great location, but the food was not outstanding at all. If given a greater scale, the review would be a solid 3.5. read more

This restaurant did a great job in food, service and ambiance during my recent trip to Berlin. In fact, I liked it so much, we went a couple of times during the week and both times everything came together beautifully. The bartender here can pretty much make any drink you want so my dirty martini and my friend's old fashioned were perfectly poured and presented. We started with a couple of the appetizers- the beef tartar is a little different than what I normally get as it is prepared table side and really had a wonderful flavor and texture. The other appetizer we had was the halibut ceviche and this too was very tasty and light. For my entree, I ordered the Sea breeze which was salmon, white fish and prawns and my dining companion went with the surf and turf. And for dessert we had the apple strudel (huge piece) and the creme brûlée which were both delicious. But what pushed this to a 5 star review for me was the level of service that we got from our server Armondo. He was attentive, pleasant and seemed to anticipate what we needed before we even knew we needed it. We actually went back another night just to sit in his section! And finally- the ambiance of this place is artsy and contemporary. A wonderful place to enjoy a nice dinner or even just to grab a drink at the bar. read more

Having read a few reviews about snarky servers and poor service, I wanted to write to say that the service we received was the best ever! We were in Berlin for the the NFL game and the first time we popped into this restaurant (very underdressed) we were warmly welcomed by the manager, Besjan. We decided to have a couple drinks at the bar where we met Benjamin (Ben). He is a true mixologist and made amazing drinks for us. We asked if we could come back another night better dressed to dine at the bar. Ben came in on his day off and spent five hours with us taking us through an amazing evening of food and drink! He had practiced a few new drinks before we came back and had created the "Horseshoe Smash" in honor of the Colts win at the game. He made a "Tomatini" -- tomato martini that was a "first" for me and outstanding! Following an excellent dinner was a tour of the restaurants (there is another restaurant on the other side of the kitchen), artwork and private dining areas. Hospitality is a passion for Ben -- he came in on his day off and gave us an unforgettable experience! Highly recommend this restaurant and drinks by the bartender Ben! read more

If you want a condescending & arrogant service, look no further. Right from the start, the host had a bit of attitude with us when we first entered the restaurant. The food and decor were good. However, our dinner was ruined by the server with his snarky quips. It was a good thing for that tip to be included because he absolutely didn't deserve one. read more

Three & 1/2 stars. Was great they honored my reservations despite being very underdressed, it was great that they had great quality food, it was great that they had fantastic artwork. Not so great was the basement bathrm (not accessible friendly) was not great that the waiter was a bit snarky. It was not great that our table was uncomfortable my small & unstable & certain food was pushed. Seemed very pretentious. We did, however, recommend the restaurant to the British folks waiting outside- so good enough to recommend coming, but not good enough to search out to dine. read more

We were very much taken in by the amazing décor and design of the restaurant which helped garner our interest which lead to our booking a reservation. But a restaurant is so much more than good design and while the food was decent the service was absolutely terrible. From the rude maitre d to the condescending and downright mean server, this was an awful experience. The male server in his late 20's early 30's had quippy and mean spirited remarks to questions like "where is your restroom" or "can we please have the check". It didn't stop there. A member of my party was hearing disabled (wears hearing aids in both ears) and because the restaurant was so noisy he asked server to repeat himself few times. The server went out of his way to make fun of him as he would laugh and make off color jokes at my dinner companion's expense. Seriously, what kind of person reticules the disabled right to their face?? Being forced to pay a tip after that treatment is just not right. Management needs to take notice and address this serious issue. We will not be returning on our next trip to Berlin and cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

We had company drinks here this evening and I quite liked the look of the menu and decided to return for dinner. They were very polite and reserved me a table and when I arrived I was addressed by my name which was nice. For ambience this place gets 5 stars. It's rustic yet modern and has a nice mix of old world charm and classy modern interiors. This would be a great place to come as a group and enjoy the atmosphere and have a few drinks and dinner. The service is prompt however the attitude of the staff was a bit arrogant. I thought I was in Paris for a minute ;-) maybe it's a Berlin thing but something I am not used to. This did turn me off a bit and hence the three stars. I ordered a rib eye for main course with grilled vegetables and a jus. The rib eye was cooked really well and the vegetables were cooked perfectly al dente just the way I like it. The jus was ok but lacked the intensity of flavour. I quite enjoyed my meal and it was probably one of the better steaks I have had in Germany. The coffee was also ok but nothing to write home about. I would come back here again if nothing else but, to enjoy the atmosphere of this gorgeous restaurant. If the staff behave the same way they did today then I may rethink if I would come back here a third time :-) The place was packed and there seemed to be a lot of tourists in the place. Location is nice and relatively easy to reach. The restaurant's interior is beautiful high-ceiling room with paintings and classic New York vibe. You can fell the class. The service is also decent, compared to other places in Berlin. Price are, however, overpriced in my opinion. We ordered oyster based on recommendation from Austernbank next door (we initially wanted to go there but it was closed). It costs us 6€ for 1 piece of oyster, but I cannot tell anything special to the taste that justifies the price. Entrecote was good, its texture was perfect. We ordered the 3-course meal which comes with l'etage gourmande for dessart. Since we were 2 people ordering the meal, we expected to get 2 sets of pastries etage as desserts. Turns out 2 people have to share one single etage, which makes it unpleasant because 2 people has to share 1 chocolate mousse and other desserts. read more

We came here last night with some colleagues and had a great experience. Starting with the decoration and the extraordinary wood carving on the wall, continuing with the staff's attention and friendliness and ending with the delicious food, this place is a gem. We were a party of nine so we ordered some spinach and beetroot salads to share which were both so different but equally delicious. I had the schnitzel. It was a generous portion although the meat was thin, and very tasty. It came with a mouth watering potato salad that i could not get enough of. My colleagues had the liver which they said was delicious. It came with smashed potatoes and vegetables. To finish i had the raspberry slice with white chocolate mousse which was beautifully presented and tasted delightful. This was an amazing find in Berlin and will recommend to anyone looking for a fancy dinner in town. read more

Stopped for dinner at Hauptstadtrestaurant Gendarmerie on Markgrafenstrasse near Gendarmenmarkt. Quite a stylish restaurant in an old building with high ceilings and funnel-shaped chandeliers, lots of windows separated by long red drapes, four large photographic portraits behind the bar (the only one I recognised was JFK), and a huge abstract painting covering most of the opposite wall. I ordered the rabbit served with truffle seasoned stuffing, a light caraway jus and Grenaille potatoes. I asked the waiter to pick a good wine to go with the meal and he suggested the Cotes du Rhone Guigal. The red was lovely; soft, not too dry and with lots of flavour. This arrived with a plate of sliced baguette and a bowl of sour cream and herbs. This was very simple, but obviously effective as I kept eating it even though I wasn't particularly hungry. The rabbit was delicious; little roulades of soft, full flavoured meat wrapped in green Savoy cabbage leaves. The baby potatoes were perfectly cooked; a little bland, but this nicely offset the richness of the main ingredient. There were also a couple of florettes of steamed cauliflower, baby carrot, baby corn, zucchini and snow peas on the plate. The only thing I would have changed was the jus which was too subtle for me - the rabbit could have taken something a lot more robust which I think would would have lifted the whole dish. Nevertheless, a very nice meal in an elegant setting. read more

This place is good. Maybe we just lucked out on service after reading some of these reviews, but it was pretty much like in other Berlin restaurants. Yes, you are a pretty place adorned with eye catching oversized art accentuating your high ceilings and you do enjoy an enviable location on a nice corner in a swanky Berlin neighborhood. But you are undone by your high priced, average food, and condescending, snail-paced service. On a slow winter Sunday night our mansplaining (laughably faux French speaking) waiter tried too hard to sell us (and all the other tables around us) on an up-charged prix fix menu. Our food was not terrible but just uninspired, which was ok until we got the hefty tab! read more

We were in Berlin for Christmas and stopped by here the night before, but they were closing. It looked good so we decided to have dinner there on Christmas day. The staff was friendly and sat us right away. We were not dressed as well as most people there, but we were traveling and stuck with comfortable clothing for a day of walking. They were very courteous, served us quickly and the food was exceptionally good. Probably the best meal during our two week travels throughout Germany. The prices were a little higher than most places, but the food was worth it. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting this area of Berlin. read more

Only two wines by the glass: "Red" or "White". Seriously???? Nice kale salad with sun dried tomatoes and avocados. The salmon was tender with a crispy skin. My wife & I had dinner here on the 29th of July. Exceptional international cuisine. Our waiter (middle aged, glasses, suspenders(?)) was attentive, particularly knowledgeable about both the menu, the restaurant history and Berlin. If you need a break from traditional German fare, desire a spacious and comfortable setting,along with great service, this is your restaurant. read more
