Der Fischladen - Grilling to perfection....

(Carbs, carbs, meat, with a side of vegetables? Count me in--as long as you hold the tomatoes and throw in some extra grease for good measure.) So when it comes to fish and chips, I expect something equally as unhealthy and delicious. Dare I say even more unhealthy and delicious, as everything in this quintessentially British meal is meant to be fried. So maybe I was just barking up the wrong tree because I should've just hopped on a cheap Easyjet from Schönefeld instead of ordering a chippy in this corner of Prenzlauer Berg. After reading the other Yelp reviews, I realize that the most confusing thing about Der Fischladen for a first-time diner is that the side shop with the fish counter--the most intuitive place to enter--is devoid of atmosphere. And the other confusing thing? The meal itself. The fish in question was devoid of flavor because I couldn't taste the batter, though it was certainly tender. (A tad too tender, if you ask me though, as I questioned whether it was a little undercooked.) The chips seemed like frozen fries from a local supermarket and the ketchup tasted too much like curry ketchup for my liking, though I saw a later diner request what must've been normal ketchup from the server. Maybe we should just let British pubs do what they do best instead. And to be fair, it seems like Der Fischladen's specialities are actually the fish market on the side and all of the other fish dishes so the verdict is still out when it comes to the healthier seafood options.

Tried their fish and chips. They are more expensive than their partner restaurant "fischfabrik". 3…read moresmall pieces for 10€ compared to 5.90€ at fischfabrik. The batter is definitely better at fischfabrik. If you are looking for fish and chips and a better deal - go to fischfabrik

Fine Italian dining at its best! And yes, in Berlin…read more I enjoyed a late lunch here. I had walked past the restaurant on numerous occasions in the evenings when it is rather crowded. They offer seating both outdoors and indoors. I opted to dine outdoors. Nice atmosphere. The waiter spoke German, Italian, and English. He was professional and efficient. Complimentary warm, fresh bread and olives were served first. I ordered a Latte Macchiato and the Spaghetti Aglio Olio. The spaghetti was perfectly cooked, al dente. It was simple, not loaded with many ingredients, just garlic, roasted red peppers, Parmesan, and olive oil. Delicious. Reminiscing makes my mouth water. It was a pleasant expensive.

The restaurant sits along a busy street near The Gate. Atmosphere is nice enough...comfortable seating inside and out under awnings, crisp white table cloths, Italian wait staff straight out of "Central Casting Roma" who charm with Italian greetings and banter. But the good times end there. While menus were brought to our table immediately, taking our order took some time and a few hand gestures to make happen. Food, a pizza and some pasta for my friend, were bland and mediocre at best. Have feeling the orders sat a bit before being delivered as they were lukewarm upon arrival. The pizza was undercooked, under-sauced, and rather boring overall. Pasta was reported to be the same. When it was to go it took three asks to settle the bill. Our charming waiter politely suggested our tip was insufficient (it wasn't), and I left feeling much more like I'd been hoodwinked into dining at a tourist trap vs. having an enjoyable experience. I'm clearly in the minority compared to other recent reviews. Maybe it was just an off-night. But I travel to Berlin enough to know there are some really good small independent places to find great Italian food. This place is not one of them. Diners beware.

Lured by the promise of currywurst, we also found delicious schnitzel, three kinds of potatoes, and red cabbage - along with a couple Ducksteins each, we ended the meal thrilled that this jewel was so close to our Airbnb. The interior decor is cozy, with a lot of signs - seems to be a pretty popular way to decorate German restaurants. Also an interesting collection of license plates - there's an Epcot one that would send any Disney World fan into paroxysms of delight. The woman running the show knows very little English, but they do have English menus and she was warm and welcoming. Remember though - it's customary to tip 5-10% in Berlin. They absolutely deserve it here. TL;dr: Great place, great food, great people. Go here.

It looked cozy and looked like German home cooking. The quaint rustic restaurant was busy the night we went. The waitress which looked like the owner gave us a quick nod to tell she saw us as she was delivering some yummy looking food to a table. We waited by the bar. She led us to a corner table and German menu. Thank goodness for Google translate. It was enough to figure out the menu and also to say Very good once the food was delivered. She gave us a great smile. Thumbs up and another beer! We certainly knew our schnitzel was being made as we can hear the pounding from the kitchen. What came out of the kitchen really did feel like home cooking. We haven't had a bad meal so are in Berlin and this is no different. Mittmanns is a cozy local restaurant that according to the signage has been around for quite a long time and I think it will be around for a while.
