We had our best meal in Berlin at Marjellchen! We stayed at the Westin in Mitte, and the Uber ride to Marjellchen was totally worthwhile. Food: Excellent food. Potato soup was perfect. We had the pork shank and the game goulash. The goulash was fantastic. Yes cabbage was perfect. The potatoes wrestle pork shank were probably cooked in bacon fat and were sublime. My only nit to pick is the dumplings with the goulash were flavorless gooey dough balls. Drinks: Excellent draft beer. Try the Duckstein red! It's fantastic. Also the "Potato Snap" (like a home brewed vodka) is a fun and interesting shot before dinner! Service: Rather slow but the poor wait staff are completely overworked. Ambiance: Quaint, almost like a dining room in an old home. Value: For the quality, value is solid. Dinner and beer for 2 with 5% tip for just under 100 Euros. read more

This is far from the Berlin city center but was recommended by a local. This is worth it! We made reservations and highly recommend because this is a smaller restaurant. Service: young girl was our waitress and was very busy but very friendly. She was not able to checkup on us after we ordered, so order everything you need. Drinks: they had 3 beer on draught, got the red blonde and it was delicious made me think of an Irish Red. Food: we ordered potato soup and it was delicious! Creamy yet chunky. The bread with the butter sour cream?? Spread paired perfectly with the soup. As our main I got the pork knuckle and my husband got the game goulash. The pork nuckle was very tender fall off the bone, I tried to eat the skin but it was too salty but the pork was super delicious. The potatoes were incredible! This was the one German restaurant we ate at while in Berlin. Let me state the good. The place is quaint and nice inside. The owner is extremely nice and friendly. And, I'm sure for people who love German food, this is a highlight. I, however, can now say unequivocally that I am not a fan of German cuisine. Therefore, my review will be far less positive than others, but please keep my distaste for their flavor profiles in mind as you might not feel at all the way I did. So here is my review. The best thing I had was the potato soup. It was very tasty, though there was a bit of a sour tinge to it. That sourness was something we would unfortunately find in all the other food that night. I don't know why. We googled it when we were back at the hotel and supposedly German food relies on fermentation a lot because historically Germany didn't have access to many spices. I don't know if this is true, but it would explain a lot. I had the best dish - the filets of pork and beef with bernaise sauce. The problem with my dish was the meat wasn't even seasoned with salt and pepper and the bernaise sauce was extremely sour and bizarre. I couldn't use it. I asked for a side of Spatzle, thinking it would be Kase Spatzle (cheese spatzle) but it turned out to be a side dish of boiled spatzle with absolutely no seasoning. Completely plain. Couldn't eat that. Luckily my kid did cause he hated the duck he ordered. We like our meat well done and the crispy duck is served that way, which is nice. However, the sauce is a bizarre overly sweet and tastes like some kind of melted cinnamon candy. It wasn't used and the duck was just bland without anything. It wasn't enjoyed. Finally we had the German meatballs which are just weird. Once again, a super sour sauce that is not to our tastes at all. I would give German food as a whole 1 star. The second star is for the incredibly friendly owner and how pleasant he was. Otherwise, it was a waste of money, and as soon as we got back to the hotel I unbookmarked all the German food restaurants I had found on Yelp! Only go if you know you love German food. This is the place to go if you want to experience authentic German food that isn't the typical "gutbürgerliche Küche" or Bavarian-style cooking. If you are unsure, ask the super friendly staff for East-Prussian dishes: Sauerbraten for example, or their Königsberger Klopse. Our last night in Europe and after all the walking, I was looking for something close and traditional. We got way more than that! This cute little place is amazing. It has a nice ambiance, with excellent service, good drinks, and mind blowing food. I had the schlesisches himmelreich and it was amazing. It was smoked pork with baked fruits (plums, pears, and apricots) and a yeast dumpling. My husband had a chanterelle soup and the goose appetizer. My mil had filettopf Marjellchen and my fil had the peppersteak. We've eating a lot of good food on our trip but this restaurant was by far the best we've eaten. To finish we split the apple dumplings which was small but perfect for our full little bellies. Come here and you won't be disappointed. Interestingly, it's hard to find proper German food in Berlin. Lots of really good burger places, french, shwarma, vietnamese, russian, georgian...but proper german food is a bit tough to come by. This place is awesome if maybe you're new to Germany (as I am) and want to know its food. Everything is amazing and the staff was kind to me in my total lack of german language. I'll be back here a lot to work my way through the menu...so far have tried the calf's liver and the tenderloin, both of which were incredible and totally outside anything I've tried before. read more

We recently dined at Marjellchen this evening and I am happy to say that it was an amazing experience all around. Everything from food quality & taste, service and ambiance was top notch. The menu is chock full of German/Prussian dishes that taste as delectable as they sound on the menu. We went with the Fillet Pot "Marjellchen" which is beef and pork fillets served with fried potatoes, mixed vegetables and Bearnaise sauce. It was simply luxurious and an absolute joy to eat. We also had The East Prussian cream herring with apples, onions, and jacket potatoes. This was also quite good. For dessert we went with the baked apple dumpling which was rolled in sugar and cinnamon and served with vanilla ice cream topped with whipped cream. What a great way to end a perfect meal! Old world charm, decor, flavours and European matter of fact sense of humour. I haven't felt this full since Christmas. Marjellchen is a small restaurant in Charlottenburg serving East Prussian cuisine. I dined here last night with Don; he knows the owner but, alas, she was out. It's safe to say this was my first encounter with East Prussian menu but I found plenty caught my eye. My ship comes from Kaliningrad, so I was keen to go when he suggested it. We began with an off-menu (? I miss most of what gets said in German) smoked starter - salmon (generally not a fan but this was quite tasty), eel, pike, stag, and goose, with sauces, spreads, breads. Delicious. Love that whole-grain brown German bread! And also a German sparking wine that he said is no longer en vogue but tasted lovely. As for the main I have no idea what he ordered but it came out as a mound of fried potatoes, bacon, and mushrooms topped with three hard-fried eggs. The grease content was startling but clearly it tasted great. My main was a stag and wild boar goulash served with fried cabbage, cranberries, and potato dumplings. Massive meal. Awesome flavors. The goulash was a thick, heavy brown stew with torn meats and juniper berries and I have no idea what else, but I loved it. Don has a red allergy so we went independent on wine. My Spatburgunder was, as I understand, a representative German red wine but it didn't do a whole lot for me. Had I realized at the time that it's Pinot Noir my expectations would have been different. Eh, learning. Had to skip dessert, though I can report that the portions are massive. We did, however, manage a shot of an anise schnapps, then an espresso and another sipper, a spicy semi-bitter something or other that had the flavor of honey, but was red. Business was slow but the clients all seemed to be keen. Service is great and the barman is a gem. Evidently the owner has a vivacious personality and really enlivens the somewhat heavy hunter motif. If you're planing on dining here, two things. Stop eating (even if your going in a few week) and secondly make a booking. We (two people) shared the mixed appetiser, consisting of just about every thing the appetiser menu offers. Everything about it was beautiful. But be careful not to stuff your self with the bread and butter (why the hell do I do this every time?). I had the signature dish of pork knuckle. It was cooked perfectly and enough to feed at least three people ,seriously. To top it all off, the service was faultless. With "grandma" ensuring you had the true German dining experience. This was my colleagues took me for a traditional German meal. We were a large group and seated properly upon arrival. The staff was very knowledgeable and supportive of our questions. Even the owner stop by to greet us and ask where we were from, to give us recommendations on what was good. The waitress was medium friendly, but I guess this is part of the Berliner Charme. Overall it was an ok meal, but I would have expected more. We had the veal liver and the duck and a mixed side salad. Portions are very generous but my duck was a bit dry and the veal liver could have been a bit more tender. It certainly wasn't the best restaurant. For the food I would give it a 3.5 stars, but in addition to that we had some Schnaps at the end as digestive and that was horrible. It seemed to be cheap pear and juniper Schnaps and they charged 9 EUR for 2 shots... 3 stars, and I have to say that I won't be back, there are much better options in town. read more

I had the grandmothers pancake with ham and my friend had the renowned pork knuckle. They were both very well-cooked and delicious. However, the woman running the business wasn't as grandmotherly as the other yelp reviews suggested. When we were putting our things down and settling into the table, I put our bottle of water temporarily..for about 5 seconds..on the table. The woman immediately (and quite loudly and untactfully) relegated that "in Germany, we do not put plastic water bottles on the table" needless to say, we got a lot of stares from our neighboring diners..not a great way to start a dinner. She also came back later and yelled at us for having our phones out while we were looking up directions. All in all, good food but probably the rudest, most condescending service I had during my month of traveling (but to be fair, I mostly had great service).
