This is the Berlin that those who have never visited discuss in hushed whispers. The freedom. The lack of judgment. The acceptance. Yes. The fact that clean, delicious (and often vegan!) food can exist in a modern, aesthetically pleasing restaurant and that people who don't abide by certain dietary restrictions can enjoy and crave. I have an enormous soft spot for baked beans over toast. An English breakfast, if you may. (This is the one mainstay of all of the weeks I've spent in London.) And most of the time, I have a hard time getting this baked beans-over-toast fix because I don't eat red meat, so a proper English breakfast would be out of the question. Not in Berlin. Not at Chipps. I came in on a rainy fall morning on the hunt for the Perfect Gentlemen: scrambled eggs, grilled tomatoes, baked beans over toast, and my choice of a vegetarian sausage. And while utterly veg-friendly and endearingly hip (the baked beans came to my table in a little jar), I couldn't help but notice that the meal, such a British staple, fell flat because of what I was comparing it to. The two pieces of vegetarian sausage were cold and the baked beans were just a tad too sweet. But still, maybe Chipps could be your Berlin. Try one of the many other options they have on their menu and I have a feeling you won't be disappointed. read more

Excellent breakfast spot with a large diverse menu. There are also a lot of alternative options if you have certain dietary restrictions. The coffee is good here (and I got myself a nice large cup) but they seem to have a lot of good smoothie options and whole juicing. The seating is a bit tight but there's plenty of it, including outdoor for when it's nice out. The service was a bit slow at the end with the check but good up until then. read more

I had Chipps bookmarked before arriving in Berlin, having read rave reviews from fellow vegans as a great spot for vegan breakfast. So we had a lot of excitement walking into this dark and modern restaurant with sleep countertops. It looked like a great place for a dinner date. But since we were here for brunch, we sat on their outdoor patio where we had a lot of sunlight and trees surrounding us. The menu is definitely diverse, offering cuisines from different regions of the world. Small letters denote whether dishes are vegetarian or vegan. However, I noticed many vegetarian dishes, but very few vegan (or rather, vegan-option as not many dishes were vegan as prepared). I settled for the Northern African, which as you can probably guess, is a Northern African dish consisting of stewed tomatoes with lots of spices and veggies. I also ordered the Choc Norris smoothie, made with coconut milk, cocoa, bananas, avocado, and other fruits and veggies. They serve complimentary bread while you wait, which is a nice touch. My Northern African dish, while tasty and flavorful, felt a little too 'simple' and lacked the 'breakfast' feel to it. I looked around at other people's dishes and I saw toast, eggs, etc. Mine felt more like a lunch or dinner plate. Despite there being vegan sausages and bacon available on the menu, it was strange that there wasn't an entire vegan dish that included them. My smoothie, on the other hand, was super creamy and thick, with an extra dose of chocolate to get your sweet tooth singing. I enjoyed my meal at Chipps, but am a little underwhelmed by the vegan options and am left pondering what other vegan's options were when they went. read more

In a city where doner and bratwurst reign supreme, Chipps is a breath of fresh air. We were famished after a 3 hour walking tour of the city and we ended up on the far side of Mitte's Gendarmenmarkt. It was serendipity when we saw Chipps (good yelp reviews too!) and even though it's a bit pricey, our dining experience was well worth it. Different tones of grey adorn the space with an impressive stainless steel kitchen in the center. The surroundings were minimalist but luxurious and the staff were professional and nice. We were delighted by our healthy choices for lunch: asparagus salad with hollandaise sauce, shakshouka (super delicious runny eggs with tomato sugo and chickpeas), cabbage rolls with potato-leek ragout. The warm coconut rice pudding with strawberries was so amazing! it was nice to have a comforting dessert to soothe our tired senses. Skip the other desserts. It looks like ... turd. I had bookmarked this restaurant prior to our trip, and I am glad I did! Chipps was a short walk from one of the Christmas markets, located on a corner with a nice little garden. We were craving a good brunch and this was a great choice. My husband wasn't feeling well and had the hot ginger tea with lemon. Large slices of fresh ginger was great for his sore throat. I had fresh squeezed orange juice, which was delicious. He had a an omelet while I opted for the eggs benedict with vegetarian bacon with a salad. Wow, it was so good! I loved that they offered veg options. The restaurant is cozy and open with friendly staff. Go if you can! read more

While walking around the surrounding area to the Hilton Berlin, in which I was staying during my time in the city, I found this restaurant just 500 meters away, having struggled to find good gluten-free food, or even any gluten-free food at all in the Gendarmenmarkt and Stadmitte area, I thought visiting here would be different, however sadly it really was not. The building Chipps is located in isn't overly nice, however, they have tried to make it look nice the best they can, with outside blackboards showcasing some of their menus in English and German. The staff here didn't seem too friendly, when I asked about gluten free, the woman didn't really appear to know what I was talking about, she just shrugged her shoulders and told me I could have nothing, she didn't check with the kitchen despite the chef probably being so close, doing nothing, which is one of the flaws of an open kitchen because the chef obviously can't get away with standing there and doing nothing, as he appeared to be when I visited, which also made the good positive open kitchen, which made me feel of freshness and cleanliness, turn into something of course more negative. I'm struggling to comment further as I didn't try the food here but mainly down to the feel of the restaurant especially from the outside, service, and gluten-free selection and other flaws mentioned throughout my review, I sadly feel Chipps in Berlin deserves a single one-star rating. read more

The fellow and I are huge fans of Cookies Cream, the classy (and considerably expensive) vegetarian restaurant tucked behind the Westin Grand. So we were glad when we finally made it to Chipps, a younger and less expensive vegetarian sibling. They have a regular breakfast, and a rotating dinner menu, but it's the lunch we'd heard about. Each week, a new menu comes out with about five options, plus three or four dessert specialties. And the price is fantastic. We arrived just around 12:30 and found plenty of seating. It was a warm afternoon, so we took a spot in the outside patio area. Usually one of the dishes is vegan, and 2-3 can be made vegan with the absence of cheese or cream, so I went with the rigatoni puttanesca while he went with the mushroom omelette. Both meals were €9.50 and came with soup or salad and bread. The presentation was beautiful, the taste fantastic, and the portions filling. We didn't really have room for dessert, but wanted to try the banana bread with caramel sauce, so we split it. All the above-mentioned food, plus two housemade lemonades, came out to €30,10. While I do think the cost of the lemonade was a bit much, the overall total compared to what we actually ate (and the quality of what we ate) was a pretty great value. Suffice to say I am definitely planning on making it here again. read more

One would think a city as metropolitan as Berlin would offer an abundance of vegan or at least vegetarian restaurants but unfortunately it isn't so. Vegetarianism is largely frowned upon and vegans might as well be from planet mars. How refreshing to find a restaurant that embraces the slow food movement, serving seasonal and organic food, with several vegan options. Add an open kitchen allowing you to observe the chefs assembling your plates and Ute is in heaven. Granted the place isn't cheap and the plates are small but the quality of the food is top notch. Love the assortment of high quality teas. Both the spiced chai and dark chocolate black tea were great. Teas are served in generous glasses with warm milk and honey. You can build your own salad in small (5.50), medium (8.50) or large, with an option to add a protein like fish, steak or seitan for an additional 6.00. The small salad is just enough for a starter for two. It was fresh and the peanut dressing awesome. There is complimentary fresh country bread served with a schmand spread with herbs and pine nuts, addicting. The vegan turnip cannelloni was phenomenal. Think of it as the healthiest crunchiest spring roll you've ever had. The sweet potatoes au gratin were great, the combination of the molten feta sauce and the baked potatoes was delicious. The potatoes however needed to be cooked longer. They weren't soft enough in the middle and the sugars hadn't caramelized. Why four stars and not five? One word: dessert. I had high expectations since all the food so far had been presented beautifully. I love polenta and make my own sweet polenta puddings at home frequently. I was quite disappointed when I was served a cake in a jar that was basically a really sweet cornbread. It was too sweet, I didn't taste any lemon and it was quite dense and dry. The coconut pannacotta was very creamy but I am not big on dairy. In retrospect, I should have gone for the chocolate cake. Skip dessert but by all means give Chipps a try, even if you're a carnivore! read more

Amazing healthy restaurant with vegetarian and vegan options! I found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try on my solo trip to Berlin. This place has my kind of atmosphere - wooden tables, dim lightning, and a modern interior. I came here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. A few of the options on the menu were seasonal and they no longer had them. I ordered a make-your-own salad and ginger-lime tea. Both were very fresh and delicious. My tab came to 12€. There is free wifi, just ask for the password. The music was very inviting and I ended up sitting for a while and reading a book. We came here for brunch on a Sunday (wooo! It's open on Sundays!) and I was thrilled by my dish. I got the double vision and was debating whether I should ask to switch the sausages for bacon. I decided against it because 1) I'm afraid of German waiters and 2) Germany is supposed to have good sausages, so why not. When my dish arrived (see photo), I had a bite of the visible sausage and was so happy with my decision-- it was delicious. But wait! There was a lump under my eggs. Was that where the rest of my sausages were hiding? It was! AND THEY WERE WRAPPED IN BACON. Greatest surprise ever! The greek salad was also amazing, and the sunny-side-up eggs were cooked to perfection with those golden yolks you only get in Europe or at a really good farmer's market. One of the best breakfasts I've ever had. I ordered the eggs Benedict (with real bacon...), and a side of sausage. A cappuccino to finish the meal. On another occasion I also tried their potato & leek soup, as well as a bowl of fresh yogurt. I am not typically crazy about food that sounds so "light"... and the reviews I read before we headed over didn't excite me, but I was completely won over after the first bite. The food was filling, delicious, perfectly cooked, and high quality. Service was excellent, and the best part... on the weekends, they serve breakfast until 5pm. Have been here twice, once for dinner and the other time for Super Breakfast on Saturdays. Both times, was impressed with service and the open kitchen concept is one that I also thoroughly enjoy. Super Breakfast had a very large menu, from pancakes with maple syrup to eggs benedict. I had both (hehe). Both were good! Aside from the eggs being slightly overcooked for my taste, the flavor was delicious for both. Dinner was delectable! The menu is very small as they make seasonal creations. I had the sweet potato gratin, which was so delicious...I can't say it enough! It was a very good sized portion, but a bit on the expensive side for Berlin. We were out and doing a lot of walking through Berlin and needed a place to sit, relax and grab a good lunch. After a short search through Yelp we found Chips and were very pleased. The Restaraunt is not huge and the tables are quite close together. As long as you are not passing any state secrets it should be fine for most. Everything was clean and seemed well organized. Part of the kitchen/food prep is done in an area nearby so you can see the chefs at work. The staff were very friendly and spoke great English. The menus were also in both German and English. I had a great omelette with a delicious side salad. The meal was light and full of flavor. I had 3 others with me who really enjoyed it as well. My daughter fell in love with the German ginger ale she was served and we asked for it for the rest of the trip. read more

Actually the worst service I've had in my life. We ordered two lemonades and one omelette. Waited for over an hour and let the server know several times that we hadn't gotten our food as other groups came, ate and left. I came here twice when I was in Berlin for four days, for dinner and brunch. Twice in four days--that should give you an idea of how good this place is. As other reviewers have mentioned, it was great to see a vegetarian themed place in a country renowned for its wurst and doner. Chipps is modern, trendy, and has a great open atmosphere that is due to the open kitchen--patrons can see chefs preparing their dishes. (Kind of makes it painful when you're hungry and you see your exact dish being prepared and as it turns out...it's for someone else...) Ingredients tasted fresh, and food presentation was excellent while still maintaining a casual, unpretentious vibe. I had been craving an American-style brunch, so I had the Double Vision--two fried eggs, sausage (option to make it vegan exists) and a tomato salad with fresh orange juice. It can get pretty busy for weekend brunch, though, so be prepared to wait for your order. Definitely on the pricier side, but the atmosphere is fantastic. read more

Myself and my girlfriend were heading to the Berlin cathedral and found this spot along the way, the staff were so friendly and so helpful when we asked about the menu. My girlfriend has a dairy allergy and they were more then happy to help! They had great options for both of us, and the open kitchen meant we could see how the food was prepared and how clean the place is. My dear friend invited me out for a lunch date at Chipps. This place in the heart of Mitte is a little bit fancier and serves mostly vegetarian salads and mains. My friend ordered one of their lunch dishes, an eggplant bake which reminded us of a Moussaka, it was pretty good! You can also build your own salad, choose the greens, toppings, dressing and so on. I topped my salad with BBQ veggies, marinated mushrooms, feta and cashews. They were really generous with the feta and the cashews (surprising but very good)! Amazing place for breakfast! We stayed at the John F Arcotel which is just around the corner from Chipps and I'm so glad we stumbled upon this fantastic restaurant! The breakfast menu is great with something for everyone... The eggs benedict was my personal favourite! Fast, friendly service and your food is prepared right before your eyes in their open plan kitchen! I think on an evening this place is predominantly vegetarian/vegan but meat eaters don't be put off at breakfast meat is on the menu! Don't hesitate visit today, you won't regret it! read more

Food used to be great two years ago: the last three times i went it was really disappointing though. Service is not so great but mostly the food has deteriorated massively. The bacon is really not tasty and not well cooked and the guacamole doesn't taste of anything really. The French toast was tasty but the portion was quite small.. All in all not a great experience. We've been lucky and scored a table here twice before the dinner rush. Each time, everything was great! Between the boyfriend and I, we tried two appetizers, two mains and two desserts, which is basically everything on the menu. BF is a carnivore, but mentioned that he never misses the meat here at Chipps -- the food is that delicious. Definitely save room for dessert and try the banana creme pie -- it's deconstructed, totally unique and absolutely amazing. I also love this location and imagine it would be even better in the summertime when you can sit outside. Came here during a cold winter night for dinner. It was not busy at all. The service was great. They offer both German and English menus which is a plus if you are a traveling famished tourist. I am a vegetarian, and the food surpassed all my expectations. Very interesting and colorful plates... most ingredients were, of course, in season. But my favorite, absolute delight, was the dessert. Well presented, delicious and reasonably priced. If you want to get a frugal sampling of this restaurant, sit at the "bar" and get a drink and dessert! Enjoy! read more

Fellow Yelp users have made my night once again. Chips is a great restaurant with a very modern look. The chef really pays extremely close attention to detail. We actually saw him change the presentation of the plate by 1 cm before letting it come to our table. The menu is pretty small for dinner but you can't go wrong with any of them. I had the risotto and summer role. They were both very tasty. The wine list is not too extensive especially if you're thinking about getting just a glass. Overall the restaurant had a great feel to it and I highly recommend you check it out. read more
