Came here for brunch about a month ago when the bf and I were in Berlin on vacation. We decided to come here because of its high ratings on Yelp. We got in just before noon, and we were glad we did because the place got completely full soon after we got seated. The menus were a little confusing as we don't speak any German and the menus had some English pages mixed in with the German pages (the little footnotes were what really confused me, but then I realized that they were using them as markers for different types of allergens). However, it didn't seem that hard to figure out as most of the offerings for brunch offered either cold cuts, cheese, vegetarian spreads, etc. with pastries and such. I opted for their normal sized vegetarian offering (you can ask for a vegan one also) along with coffee and a 20 mL cup of red currant juice. The bf got an order of their scrambled eggs with bacon, along with a 40 mL cup of orange juice. The vegetarian offering I got was amazing. There were a few different slices of cheese, 2 different types of savory spreads (one yogurt based, and the other was some sort of curried spread), and a bunch of fresh fruits. We got a very generous sized basket of bread to share, and it was just a perfect and somewhat light meal. The bf's eggs were delicious, and our juices were fresh and tasy as well. We could easily see why this place was so popular with the locals. Would definitely come back here if I ever happened to find myself in Berlin again. read more

While in Berlin, I stumbled across this place called Bastard through browsing reviews on Yelp, I decided to call in here not only because of the good reviews but the fact the place is called Bastard, which is a name which probably wouldn't be allowed in my home-country of the United Kingdom. This place is located in quite a rough area of Berlin, as I recall it was on the 248 bus route, yet buses in Berlin is a system I've struggled with mainly down to having so many stops without any proper signage for example one bus might go from one stop, another from another. This place isn't in a great location as I said, you can even find some graphiti on the walls as you go in to the small inside seating area. The menu was quite restrictive and authoritarian in the sense you couldn't personalise your dishes or tweak them, despite it being fresh food which was a shame and alongside the location, the major flaw of this place. For example, they had a meal with Fried eggs and other things which I didn't want, and they refused to just do fried eggs. I ordered Scrambled Eggs with Bacon, this was quite good quality and a much better breakfast than I could have had at my Hilton hotel in Berlin, but still I found the side dishes to go with it such as beans and the choice of that to be poor, they only had "fresh" bread, gluten bread, which didn't taste too great. I also was impressed with the range of fresh juices which were quite cheap at 2.40 euros each for 0.2L, I ordered a mixed juice as I recall it contained pumpkin and apple and a few other things, and I enjoyed it, albeit my first choice being a pear juice was sold out. The waitress seemed friendly enough but it was frustrating they had run out of products such as the pear juice and couldn't slightly amend their dishes and they didn't have gluten free bread. The place inside was small and really busy, it had an old-fashioned theme to it, it wasn't the nicest place in terms of décor, it is probably something one would expect to find in Manchester's Northern Quarter for example, which is my home town. The food and beverage mentioned was good quality, but the location and inability to slightly personalise your dish and the selection overall was quite poor. Was the food worth the wait to get a table and my trip to find it? I'd guess so, but still due to the major flaws I still feel Bastard doesn't deserve anything other a three star rating. read more

Very great establishment located in Kurtzberg. Nice hosts and service. Menu has a translated English page. Euros only. There is outdoor and indoor seating. My friends and I like to split some entrees to try out different things. We each enjoyed every single item we ordered. We ordered a "little bastard" 2 egg jar, bacon (ham) scramble, goat cheese and honey scramble, a salmon scramble and a small mixed meat and cheese plate to share. All we're such a treat and now one of our favorite breakfast spots when visiting Berlin. A definite must try! read more

The service was prompt, the menu had English translations and there were many options of fruit juices. I had the Bomber of the Heart (Bomber des Herzens). It was one of the best brunch experiences I had in a while! It consisted of two eggs with chorizo, onions, over a bed of sweet potatoes, and bbq on the side. It was divine! Some people complain about Berlin's obsession with brunch, but being that I come direct from brunch culture (the bay area is all about it), I fully embrace it. In fact, it's easily my favorite meal of the day, any time, although I tend to only indulge on the weekends. A friend and I had plans to meet up in the late morning, and she suggested Bastard. So I checked out the reviews, and all of them were positive. But looking at the website, I noted there is no breakfast menu posted, and the lunch (which changes daily) offered tons of meat and cheese, and nothing notably vegan. So of course, I was a bit hesitant, but I decided we would give it a try just the same. When we arrived, it was a week day, so the seating was ample. Being that it was a sunny day, we chose a table outside. Breakfast was on (and goes until 4:30 p.m.), so I took a look at the selection, readying myself to order a vegetarian breakfast with more fruit/veggies in place of cheese. However, Bastard has a vegan option, so I went with that. The meals came out a bit later, and mine consisted of a salad (with a variety of dark leafy greens and sprouts), grilled vegetables (mushrooms, carrots, etc.), a vast array of fruit (figs, kiwi, grilled peaches, cantaloupe, berries), three spreads (berry jam, a sweet relish-y pesto, and a sun-dried tomato-y spread), and of course a basket of their famous house-baked bread. Let me just say that I was impressed. Not only was there a large variety of food, but it was healthy and delicious and interesting... I can't say how many times I have been given pieces of flavorless cantaloupe as my fruit option, and getting so much good stuff with this breakfast just blew me away. All in all, I enjoyed my breakfast and it was quite filling (for the small option), and the coffee was not bad either. Additionally, the total for both came to less than €8. However, Bastard only gets four stars in my book, because even though there was a vegan option - and a really great one at that - it's pretty much the only thing I can eat there. I did notice that the lunch menu for that day had a vegetarian option, but not only wasn't it listed as exclusively vegan, but none of the other entree options were veg-friendly. If they had vegan lunches, then I could definitely get behind Bastard 100%. In the meantime, it's wonderful to have a brunch spot in my vicinity that actually does breakfasts right. read more

It was my birthday while I was in Berlin and I wanted a good brunch. Bastard was one of the top rated places on Yelp and it was close to our hostel so we decided to give it a try. It was a beautiful day and there were tables outside but unfortunately the wasps were out in force so we took a table inside beside the window. The breakfast menu is fairly extensive and offers a good choice of both savoury and sweet dishes. I opted for the mixed breakfast platter while my friend chose scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. My platter came out beautifully presented with a range of different meats, cheeses, pate, spreads and even fresh fruit. Alongside the basket of fresh bread they gave us it was perfect. The scrambled eggs also went down a treat. I would also recommend the incredible coffee. read more

The ambience was really nice as was the outdoor seating area, but unfortunately there were a lot of bees (at least 10) which were circling tables and climbing into juices / syrups, which meant that I rushed to finish much quicker than I would have usually. read more

Menu was in German which we didn't understand (our fault) she said to let her know if we had any questions but when we were asking her she seemed in a rush and said "it looks like you need more time" and left without answering our questions. This place is great, cash only btw. for 6,90 you get this large breakfast spread for one of either meats, cheeses, or vegan. I chose meats because I am an unapologetic omnivore. The assorted meats were absolutely delightful and I could not get enough of the chive spread. There was even a meat pate on the plate which I throughly enjoyed and sprinkled sprouts on top of. In between my meat fest, I had some fruit and sipped on my excellent coffee (which is a rarity around these parts it seems!) I don't think I paid more than 10 euros for my meal, which is unbelievable because the same spread would have been 16USD at a minimum stateside and they would have been snobby and crowded. read more

This place is just fantastic, and if you're staying in Kreuzberg, you should go. I was all about trying a place called "Bastard" for the name alone, but I must say that in this case it's a misnomer. Everyone there was super sweet to us, the location is on a quiet, sunny street, and the food was as beautifully presented as it was super tasty. My wife and I went on a Saturday for a late brunch, around 3:30 pm (They stop serving food at 4:30). There were plenty of tables at that time, both outside and in, and we were greeted at the coffee bar by a sweet woman with a smile on her face. The menu is in German and English, which was helpful for us. We were hungry (and undecided) enough to order for three instead of two. It took a bit of time to get our food, but it was apparent why: it was very lovingly prepared. I had most of the Pancake (slathered with a yummy sort of whipped cream, with side dishes of diced fruits and maple syrup), and the "Eggs Bastard": eggs in cream, with herbs, cooked in a little jar, with a garnish of micro greens and a small piece of house bread. Both were super delicious. My wife had most of a mixed-meats breakfast plate, which also came with some greens and fruits, and a basket of house breads and rolls, along with a seriously delectable homemade berry jam (alas, they do not bottle and sell it). And when I say we each ate "most", I mean we shared some with each other. As pretty as those plates were when we got them, they were empty when we were done! We also had a coffee and an orange juice (they have a great variety of juice flavors on offer), and my one quibble is that the OJ was not freshly squeezed. Surprising, given the awesome preparation of the food. For all I know, though, they had run out of oranges by the time we ate, and either way, it's not enough to knock a star off the rating. And the whole thing was only around €20! We'd have paid a lot more at home. Before leaving we had brief, separate conversations with two of the women who worked there, about where we were from, the travel plans of one woman, and the music the other was playing over the speakers. My brother and the guidebook said that Berliners love their leisurely brunches so I was looking forward to check out some brunch spots. My brother took me to this cozy spot on a rainy morning. He ordered one of their breakfast plates - cold cuts, spreads, cheese, bread. It makes for a very beautiful and tasty plate. I also had fresh baked brioche (delish!) and coffee. I liked this place because of the relaxed atmosphere but I do think the food itself is more traditional rather than exciting. So it really depends on your preference whether this is a spot for you or not. read more

This was worth the electric scooter ride. We had a perfect cheese and meat board with homemade bread and a delicious glass of wine. The staff is super cute and Germany, welcoming fun and spirited. We first stumbled in here about 4 years ago after spotting it on the way home from a bar now long gone, they hadn't been around long, but that didn't mean they weren't ready to rock my world. Three ingredients, one dish; scrambled eggs, goats cheese and honey. Sweet, salty, creamy and utterly irresistible. I'm definitely still talking about the eggs. So if you're nearby, and want a delicious brunch, there is much worse to find than the B*. My only mark down is that when it's busy, which is often, it can seem to take a while to get noticed, especially if you're sitting outside. My friend and I ate a nice Sunday brunch here. The food was very good. She had the mixed breakfast (with bread, meat, cheese etc.) and I had the pancakes. We also shared two of the eggs in a jar (not sure what it's called in German) which are among the top ten egg dishes I've ever had. We came in Saturday morning around 9am and had to wait for about 20-30 min but there was seating outside that we had tea and coffee waiting for our table. The tea was great and not expensive. Nutshell: nice food, stuck-up staff. Like their eggs with salmon, and their brioche is pretty nicely made. So is the marmalade you get with it. I've been there more than once and I enjoyed my meal quite a lot. Negative point: Not very friendly staff / Not flexible at all, I asked to remove the Chorizo from a dish (I don't eat meat) and the waitress refused to even ask the chef if it was possible. I asked if the dish (scrambled eggs!!!) was pre-made with Chorizo, and she said no but they can't not include it!! I've had Michelin-star chefs adapt menus to their diners' needs/desires, how hard is it to not put chorizo in one particular dish of *scrambled eggs*?!!! read more

3 stars = very very slow service and try pick your seats! I was really looking forward to coming here after reading it's reviews however I had to dock it 2 stars and that is mostly on service. We were seated quite quickly, but our seat was attached to a kind of shrub trolley that was full of dead plants and cigarette butts. The table was tiny so the corner of this "trolley" was very uncomfortably intrusive. We ordered and sat for 45mins to get our food, which by this time, in the 28 degree heat and uncomfortable seat our patience was very thin. My dish was very tasty and my coffee was great. My partners food was good and his juice was a let down being described as a cherry juice, it was a fizzy quite bitter beverage. Overall I see why this place is busy but our experience wouldn't have me running back. There food is different to the standard breakfast choices out there but there service is incredibly slow for a dish(mine) that had no cooking involved, just cold cuts and just prep. read more

Really tasty and charming! Don't let the name intimidate you this place is really welcoming, laid back, cozy and yummy. We sat outside one sunday morning under the large trees for a late brunch. I ordered the small vegetarian breakfast plate. It was more than enough to fill up a single person. I am sure the large size would be enough to share. On the plate there was an assortment of cheeses (hard and soft), spreads (hummus and jams) and fresh fruit. Others at the table had pancakes (Thicker than a crepe but rolled like one, very tasty but not the typical american style pancakes). A hash made of sweet potatoes, an egg and chorizo I think it was the best plate at the table. And another had really great looking musli with vanilla quark and assorted fruits. If you are in Kruezberg one mid morning you wont be sorry to swing into this place for a leisurely brunch. read more

I don't understand how I haven't been reviewing this restaurant earlier ?! This place is awesome, Their breakfast are great (the hammer max !) and the staff is usually super nice. I can't eat normal bread (because of a Gluten Intolerance) so I usually take my bread with me when I go to the restaurant, but as I asked to have my Hammer Max without bread, the waitress asked me to give her a slice of my bread so they can arrange a normal dish for me but with my bread, I found that soooo nice of them ! They also do one of the best dairy free hot chocolate I had. The only "bad" thing about this restaurant is that it's always crowded, even during the weekdays. read more

Just perfect. Okay, let's write some lines more. The Breakfast consists (if you want) of great cheese, spreads and awesome homemade bread. i especially recommend the Brioche which comes freshly baked out of the oven. And the accompanying strawberry marmelade is more like a "mus" - it tastes like the blended it with fresh strawberries. awesome, awesome. Prices are absolutely okay since there is a lot of handwork to do to achieve a quality like this. Staff is always great. There is Tagesspiegel and other newspapers to read. One flaw is that the coffee is very good, but not third wave style. Well, that's the one for coffee-freaks. If you expect third wave coffee, it might be four star. I expected a great breakfast. So i give it a five star ranking. A lot of locals (families, hipsters) do go there. Reserve a seat before going there. Or go there at 9am on time for breakfast, then you might have luck. read more

If you can make a trip to Markthalle Neun, then you best make sure you swing by Bastard Restaurant...preferably for a late brunch. I mean, doesn't the upsetting name already catch your fancy? The cramped rustic interior featuring cracked paint on walls revealing the concrete under captures the neighborhood warmth. Make sure to be assertive with your place in line if you're a foreigner or risk having your spot snagged by a bold local. Now here, Definitely order a breakfast platter... Meats cheeses or a luscious vegetarian option are possibilities. If youre craving a sweet treat, snag a strawberring and cream cheese (lets just call it strawberring cheesecake) brioche. The breakfast platters must have been prepared by a garden landscaper... Everything is rolled sliced and snuggly placed to perfection... And finished off with an ample dash of pollen! It is always spring within these walls. Look forward to the wasabi cheese, strawberry jam and of course... The bread basket sent from heaven.
