Spreegold is a a very cute cafe near Alexander Platz which is very convenient for all transportation and cultural attractions in the city. The menu has a lot of interesting options and has a vibe of American style food like pancakes and Benedict eggs. The ambiance is also what you would expect on an American cafe. The food overall was okay. Although the presentation of all the dishes was beautiful ; the food itself was not great . The poached eggs were overcooked and seemed more like hardboiled eggs than anything, no runny yolk or softness. The pancakes were catalog worth it ; but they were a bit flat and not super flavorful . Ooof where to start? We were shopping in the area and it looked like an option with fresh light food that was casual. They had English language menus which was a nice touch. They had GF options marked on the menu, also a plus. My son said his cinnamon bun was excellent. That's where it ends. I guess we hit this place on a shift change. We watched our food come up, they ding the bell and then I look at my hot dish sit and cool on the ledge for 10 minutes. Then I watched our waitress walk out on her way home past our food. So we wait some more and finally the staff remaining comes to drop the food. I ordered shakshouka. It's pretty simple and I've literally never had a bad one, before today. This was the most vile tasting thing I've ever eaten. Something in there was so over salted it was inedible. Also impossible to eat around. Something tasted somewhat rancid. The eggs were horribly undercooked (and I'm a regular soft boiled egg eater so I'm not scared to eat undercooked eggs). Miserable and as I type this we're currently waiting for our check and being ignored. So many other great places in Berlin to waste your time here. read more

As a native San Franciscan, I concur with the reviews that point out the similarities between Spreegold and any popular brunch place back home in the Bay. But I think that might be the problem. By embracing the West Coast brunch aesthetic, Spreegold tries to do too much and forgets the fact that it's a restaurant in Berlin, where this San Franciscan example may not necessarily work. Take the menu for example. Extensive is one way to describe it. The Pink Lady, underneath the poached eggs section, immediately called out to me as something that I would probably order back home in California. An aesthetically pleasing egg dish--what more could I ask for on a Sunday morning? Maybe cold poached eggs that didn't take more than half an hour to come out of the kitchen? I can excuse the wait during weekend brunch (in retrospect, hangry me definitely didn't), but the actual food itself left more to be desired. The beetroot hollandaise sauce that gives the Pink Lady its name completely overwhelmed the dish, making you forget about the pumpkin hummus or even the poached eggs. Aw I'm a little sad to see a 3 star overall rating for Spreegold. We were here for breakfast in June 2017. If you're looking for fresh, quasi-farm-to-table (because I'm not really sure if it's locally sourced), and wholesome food, Spreegold is your spot. I was totally a fan of their home-made pasta and the boyfriend seemed to have enjoyed his paleo omelette. The menu can be a bit overwhelming... it's HUGE! Everything sounded delicious, so narrowing down my options was definitely a challenge. Luckily, the lovely girl taking our order was very friendly and patient. Oh, and the portions are huge too. Nice space. Kind of has a hipster vibe. Would totally fit in in San Francisco. The only slight downside is that it is a bit on the pricier end. I was in Berlin for a month back in May and Spreegold was the place I went to for breakfast almost every morning as it was conveniently next our AirBnb. They have a great selection of healthy and delicious brunch foods such as avocado toast, eggs benedict, oatmeal, fruits, waffles, etc. Great coffee and espresso too. The ambiance is nice. Also, if you're an American (maybe it's a West Coast thing, actually) and you're used to every building you enter being air-conditioned -- be prepared! It can get pretty hot inside the restaurant during the summer months, as with any other place though. It can also get busy sometimes. There was a time when we waited almost 40 minutes for a plate of avocado toast and waffles. Overall it was still a great experience and would love to visit again. read more

Only thing dragging them down is the service, I don't like selfservice and the waiter was kind of rude when we tried to order, because we didn't know. I visited Spreegold on a Sunday morning at 10am and it was pretty crowded. I'm guessing that should not be a surprise on weekends, so you would think they account for that and have enough staff... except they were quite obviously drowning. The wait was no big deal and ordering was easy. We had two requests to get a sauce and another topping of our food on the side. The girl who took our order was all smiles and assured us that she is happy to get it for us on the side. When we finally got the food none of the things we specifically asked to get on the side were served accordingly. The coffee took forever (20 minutes). The barista yells through the restaurant as loud as she can each time a new hot drink is ready. Unfortunately it was so extremely loud in the place, that it was almost impossible to hear her. The tables were all dirty, the place where guests are supposed to bring their dirty dishes to was overflowing and the cleanliness in general doesn't seem to be a priority at Spreegold. The dust behind where we were sitting was half an inch high. The coffee (vanilla latte) was pretty good, but the food not so much. We had eggs benedict where the bread was completely soggy, because it was served on some salad with dressing. It tasted fine apart from that, but I have had better eggs benedict about three hundred times before. The so called "pancakes" (why use the English word if it has NOTHING to do with an American pancake?) were awful. They tasted like corn biscuits with way too much baking soda in it. Kind of crispy and just not what a pancake should be at all. The fruit they used to decorate the plate with looked like it was a week old. All in all, it was a disappointing breakfast experience. Way too many real good places in Berlin to easily skip a place like Spreegold. Also, your clothes will smell like bacon and eggs for two days. read more

I don't get why this place has all these bad reviews as the food and concept is excellent: Fresh food and great taste! Ok, so the service can improve, and it should. It's not hard to be polite? If it is- change job? The place is packed at times, but the line shrinks fast and there is plenty of space. Prices are decent and the portions good. I have tried red beet salad, breakfast plate and eggs benedict here, and it all tastes splendid. They serve paleo and vegan if you like too, plus lovely lemonade. Try the salty caramel shake! I was really looking forward to eat here, since i had seen some pictures of the food on Instagram. Especially their healthy menu looked good, with both paleo-dishes, smoothies, fresh fruit, porridges etc. Went with my boyfriend on a not-busy-at-ALL wednesday morning in june, only to leave disappointed and still very hungry. :-( We ordered the eggs florentine with extra salmon, a paleo power-omelette, an ice tea and a spree gold special juice. The extra salmon costed 3.5. First of all, they forgot our drinks - but that can happen, so I didn't really think of that as something outrageous. However, when the food arrived we were completely shocked....... My omelette was covered in grease - probably from the bacon - and the dressing on the salad was brown and looked awful. The 3 thin slices of avocado was barely there on the place. The chicken in the omelette was dry as ever and it did not taste like they had seasoned that or the eggs it at all. The eggs florentine came with little to no spinach, one tiny slice on salmon, two slightly undercooked poached eggs and a ****load of hollandaise which was both ice-cold and tasted like mayonnaise. To top that, it was served on a slice of really soggy bread. The only good thing was the drinks - especially the juice was really good, and big. I completely lost my appetite and could not even manage to ask for something new. We informed the staff about this, and left right after. read more

I don't think I've ever hated a menu before. This monster is around 10 pages, in no discernible order and on a clip board. It was dirty and long with pages of drinks, brunch and dinner options mixed. I ordered the med sun pasta which was poorly cooked with a bland sauce. The sauce contained sun dried tomatoes and little else. I also had a few bites of the gnocchi which had a nice flavor and texture (it contained a filling, a technique I've never seen before) but it was covered in a very watery, bland sauce that contained chunks of celery, very odd. I had a lemon-ginger tea which was acceptable but rather expensive and in a cup that appeared dirty or at least very scratched up. The wait staff was polite and the decor was modern, however, the picture above our table was dripping in dust/cobwebs. The food is quite expensive for the low quality. I've been here for lunch twice in the past three months. The first time I had a pasta, and it was great. It was hot, tasty, and made-in-front-of-your-face freshness. The second time (today) wasn't so pleasant. I came here with five coworkers, and we had to wait over 45 minutes for our food. Being a Canadian living abroad, I missed food from my homeland, so when I saw they had "Canadian Pancakes" on the menu, I was excited and ordered it without second thought. What a horrible idea! The pancakes were like English biscuits -- the texture was hard and dry, they were crumbling into pieces, and not light and fluffy as they should be. The bacon they used weren't North American-style bacon, but rather Italian-style. And the maple syrup... it tasted/looked diluted, and they only gave enough for one pancake, not for all three that were served on the plate. We ordered the devil's breakfast and the shakshuka deluxe, however both of them were terrible, inconsistent, and cold. On the Shakshuka the bread was very stale. The shakshuka itself was subpar and all the vegetables tasted like they were from a can. Overall, a disgusting meal. The devil's breakfast resembled a prison meal and the poached eggs were extremely over-cooked. The worst part, we waited over a half an hour. Another guest waited over an hour for this atrocity. We expected Spreegold to be fast, BUT we ended up waiting 45+ minutes for our food (vegan chickpea burger and Huevos rancheros). While we waited, we saw multiple people go up to the counters asking when their food would be ready, only to be told "the chef is working on it now and will be ready in a few moments." This is a lie! Wanting to experience something a bit more upscale and unusual for breakfast (I am trying to avoid using the word "hipster") , I didn't necessarily let myself get scared by the prices upon ordering the acai bowl and the egg-bacon toast. However, I was disappointed to see that the food order that came, was pretty much in child-sized portions. My friend ordering porridge, received a bowl smaller than the palm of his hand, while myself was not much luckier.
