Haab is legendary among the ones who understand good food. The decor is basic, and on superficial viewing it seems just a generic take out joint. But the quality, the detail, the elegance of so many of the salsas, sauces and seasoning put it at the highest level of cuisine, regardless of style or price. Try the Salsa Fresca, try the Tamarindo Margarita, the regular salsa that comes with the chips. Try the home made tres leches cake. Try the shrimp taco, the meat tacos. Enhance them with the salsa fresca and just live a little. If you don't get it your heart is just made of stone. This place is a rare gift. Don't miss it. read more

I love this place! Before COVID I loved their food. Since then, they put up an adorable outdoor section with umbrellas, tables and flowers planted all around. If you go to eat al fresco, they come and clean the table for you, then serve you menus and drinks. Entrees arrive in real pottery. I usually go for the enchiladas. They are baked in a small casserole dish and served fresh out of the oven with a topping of avocado and crema. Totally Delicious! They provide a selection of sauces as well. This place was excellent! My boyfriend and I arrived this beautiful Friday afternoon looking for a delicious lunch. We stumbled upon this place after leisurely walking through the neighborhood. I ordered the Huevos rancheros w/ steak and he ordered 1 steak and 1 cactus taco and two margaritas. This was probably one of the best meals I have had in the Williamsburg,Brooklyn area. I ordered a vegan burrito and veggie tacos with my boyfriend and we are on a strict diet where we cannot eat meat. The burrito turned out to be a steak burrito that I discovered the hard way - and was not even tasty it was mostly all rice and beans. When we asked for our money back for the order (in person) they only refunded the burrito even though we explained it was really bad for us that they gave us meat and we will be sick. I believe that a little over a year ago I was served pig rectum instead of calamari. The last time I ate here, the calamari salad served to me contained rings of something that, from my many years of enjoying squid, was absolutely not squid. It smelled aggressively like feces, as was confirmed by the rest of the horrified table. I returned it kindly, and then it was returned back to me with a statement from the chef that calamari always smells like feces. A story of this practice was told on This American Life. I wished for it to be nothing but an urban legend. I've been haunted by this experience ever since. On another occasion I was quietly charged $2.50 for asking for extra mayo. So, no. Fresh flavours, a huge menu, and relatively quick delivery times are a definite boon, even if some dishes are better than others. A burrito the size of a mango comes filled with a variety of goodies (grilled steak with queso fresco, grilled chicken with Monterrey Jack and crema, and the massive Haab, loaded with steak, chicken, pork al pastor, pineapple, queso fresco, and guacamole), and all come with rice, beans, and a crisp pico de gallo. Stopped by Haab for a quick dinner on a Friday night in route to a nearby party. Unfortunately for us there was nothing quick about our meal. It was a nice night and we were looking for a place to sit outside. Haab fit the bill with its sidewalk cafe and its casual/chill atmosphere. We sat down at the last unoccupied table outside and waited for our server to drop off our menus. This would be the quickest service we received. We got our menus and then waited about 10 minutes for her to come back. She thanked is for waiting and took our order. Another 10 minutes went by and my beer was delivered. Another 10 and we finally got water. Side note: If you order a Tecate (only $4, not bad) it comes with a lime dipped in a spicy power. After my first taste I immediately regretted dropping it in the beer. After every sip it feels like you just sucked on a jalapeno. So now that we finally have water we are thinking our meals will be here soon. We have had been waiting 20 minutes at this point and really how long can it take to put together 2 burritos? Apparently it is 40 minutes. 40 minutes for 2 burritos on a Friday night. I don't that the best burritos in the world would be worth waiting 40 minutes for. The were defintely not the best burritos in the world, but they weren't bad either. They are big portions for what you pay for and pretty tasty. Not the best I have ever had, but not the worst either. However, I didnt wait 40 minutes for the worst burrito I have ever had either. Having learned from our wait for food we asked for the check during the arrival of our food. By the time we were finished eating we had the check and promptly left. Haab probably deserves more like 2.5 stars, because the food is good. But, having 1 server for the entire restaurant on a Friday seems a little ridiculous to me. The same must have been true for the kitchen though as well. It never occurred to me to actually eat here because so many restaurants in this vicinity are SO mediocre and I didnt want risk being disappointed with another local restaurant. But after a trusted friend who also lives in the neighborhood highly recommended it, I went one day with a couple of friends when we couldnt decide where else to go. AMAZE-BALLS! I was super impressed and so pleasantly surprised. Finally, a place in the area that will totally satisfy and not make me feel like Im wasting my money on mediocrity. So fucking good! One star knocked off for being cash only and no signage about it anywhere. Came out for restaurant week and they had vegan options. So so so good. We got seitan flautas, vegan tostadas, and chicken fajitas. Everything was seasoned to perfection and very, very fresh. It was filling without being heavy. Even the dried tortillas weren't too greasy or heavy. They make all their salsas and hot sauces in house, as well as the tortillas. And you can tell for sure. Oh and $5 happy hour all day YES please. Though the beau said the margarita was only ok. The service was a bit slow since there was only one guy working but he gave us a free drink to compensate our wait time. Super nice and attentive, and really appreciates our feedback. The restaurant was pretty empty but their takeout was hopping. Definitely give this place a shot!! Haab is a great low-key, low-hipster-quotient Mexican place. By that I mean, nothing is that fancy, and it's not self-consciously/ironically kitschy--which is a good thing. My boyfriend and I were in the area for a play, so we hit it up for a pre-show dinner and were amazed at the explosion of fresh ingredients for a reasonable price. While we were deciding on food to get, we ordered a couple of cans of Tecate, which are served with lime wedges dredged in chili powder. It sounds strange, but the spicy, limey taste really was great with the Tecate and we thought it boded well for the food to come. To start, we got the guacamole and the grilled calamari salad. The guacamole was really good, but somewhat standard, but that calamari salad was a real standout. I would even say that if you're not starving or are on a diet, you could totally make a meal out of the pile of vegetables, greens, and perfectly tender calamari. YUM. For entrees, I got the duck confit taco and the al pastor taco. Duck confit was meh, just gray meat with a tasty salsa on top, but the al pastor was the bomb. My boyfriend got the al pastor burrito, and that was even more delicious. Usually I'm not the biggest fan of burritos generally because they seem to be mostly bland rice, but these were full of creamy, flavorful beans, cheese, and wonderful tangy pork. We walked away (after another round of Tecate), full and not horrified at our bill. WIN. read more

I LOVE HAAB! I just moved to New York from LA a few months ago, and I'm very pleased to have this place right around the corner. My experience has been eating in the restaurant, for brunch, lunch, and dinner, (never delivery) and every time the food has been outstanding. The huevos rancheros are awesome (you can add meat if you want which is different but good)....the best I have had since moving here. I get the huevos about once a week. Also the chilaquiles are pretty authentic (says my Mexican roommate). Haab eggs, which are a house brunch special, are also one of my favorites. Nice selection of salsas, and they serve the good kind of Mexican fried tortilla chips while you wait. Thin and crispy and warm. AND there is awesome sangria, and a pretty good wine and beer selection. The owner, Joaquin is super friendly and the blond guy Allen who is always there is also very helpful. Great food, great service. The fact that I eat here once a week or more says it all! read more

My friend and I came here yesterday to grab a quick bite before he had to go to a tattoo appointment. I'm vegan so I was very pleased with the many options on the menu for me. My friend decided to get the seitan burrito as well. The burritos were huge and delicious and came with a small salad. My lemonade wasn't anything to write home about, but wasn't bad by any means. Placed an order through Yelp, and called to check if my order went through (never received confirmation email) and was told that orders cannot be placed through Yelp and that I needed to order via Seamless/Delivery.com Went ahead and did so, and picked it up at the restaurant. Lo and behold, two orders were placed, and when I asked for a refund (since I really wouldn't have placed another order for no reason without their manager telling me my first one didn't go through) I was denied, and told to call Yelp. I absolutely adore the Haab! A welcome addition to the Williamsburg Mexican restaurant fold. Inexpensive, deliciousness made with fresh, quality ingredients. They have a really impressive specials list, but also offer up staples like burritos & tacos, all for an extremely fair price. I am a fan! The atmosphere is really inviting, lots of detail paid to their decorative touch. The staff is phenomenal, really sweet & accommodating every time. And even though it's not on the menu, they never bat an eye when I ask for a refreshing Michelada! Our waiter even gave us a sample of their Sangria, which was splendidly delicious. Try it. Not what I am looking for when I think "Mexican." Not that it isn't Mexican, but I guess I'm just a fan of the cheap stuff- not the "done up" kind, and the food here is sophisticated Mexican. Walking up to this place you feel like you are going to a party. Outside there are streamers, and the place has indoor and outdoor seating. The inside is small, but the set up probably allows for seating of ample guests. The place has a wonderful aesthetic, and their branding is everywhere. Way to get a name to stick! The waitress was very attentive, but we also were the only people in there even though it was around noon on a Saturday. I felt like the wait for our food was a bit long considering we were the only people there. My husband got steak fajitas, I got some carnitas dish, and our friend got the Haab eggs. The eggs looked great, and our dishes looked good too. My carnitas were ok but the pork seemed dry (reheated?), the 3 salsas (regular, salsa de arbol, salsa del diablo) were what made the food. I dumped them all over my food... mm. My husband liked his fajitas but he felt like it wasn't alot of food especially for what he paid. The black beans were tasteless, and the rice was standard. Basically, while this place tries to serve a more sophisticated version of Mexican, I feel like it does away what what makes Mexican great. Went here strictly for the fish tacos, as recommended by yelpers. They hold up, for sure. Very solid,, my #1 or #2 in all of new york. Don't balk at the $4.25 price as the taco is a great portion and quality fish/ingredients. Get more than one. One caveat -- if you prefer soft tortilla to hard, as I do, make sure to specify. I ordered 2 tacos and the menu nor the server indicated an option and I received 2 hard shells. To me, soft is always the standard. Definitely recommend the Huevos Rancheros. The Haab burrito is huge and great despite it having some dryness - would have preferred it with juicier undertones, but I would buy it again. Horchata is one of the better authentic ones I've had in the US, owing to its soft rice at the bottom and balanced sweetness. Tres Leches is good. Seeing the salsa brought up from storage in appropriately wrapped saran makes me happy and confident in the prep, as a restaurant manager myself. Windows could use some cleaning for a perfect environment. Service was no problem this time around. I like the hostess/cashier and the server gave good effort. Happened upon haab whilst helping a friend explore my side of Willie. I had the pup with me, not sure if they regularly allow folks to dine with their dogs, but our waiter brought Hillary Clinton her own bowl of water, score! (There was no one there when we arrived and had only 1 other table on the patio with us during our stay.) We ordered some coffee and guac to start. The guac was awesome but the presentation, while looks good, makes it hard to eat and you certainly run out of chips before guac (chips come poking out of the guac, not on the side) I had the breakfast burrito super yummy, added some of early said guac to it and perfection. My bud had the huevos Mexicanos and said it was golden. They use black beans for everything (but have pinto beans should you want them.) the waitress who sat us was great and the waiter who brought Hillary her water and took our order was obviously super sweet, plus he said hill was cute. We live in the neighborhood and we enjoyed going to the Haab for many years but we noticed that the service got slower and slower and that the staff looks very disorganized. It is the second time that we wait about an hour a half to get our food. Our last order was "enfrijoladadas" which is basic Mexican food ( beans and tortillas) and we waited 90 minutes for it! Their vegan chorizo burrito is so good, i've never had good vegan chorizo before so I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not a fan of most vegan meats, but this one is really good especially because their burrito is packed with rice, beans, guac, spinach and a vegan cream. It's a little spicy, but nothing too bad. I've eaten more tacos from Haab than I care to admit. The fish and aguacate con queso are my faves. Quesadillas and tamales do not disappoint. Note that the tamales are definitely NOT appetizers though. Could suffice as an entire meal. The service is hit or miss. I've had both really great, friendly waiters and really unsmiling not-very-helpful waiters. One time I called to make an order to-go but could not remember the name of the aquacate con queso taco. I said it had black beans, avocado and cheese in it and started with an A. "We don't have that. Chicken, beef or fish." "No, I've definitely 100% had it before, several times. It's vegetarian." "No we have... -proceeds to list literally every taco on their list except this one at rapid speed-" "Um. No. Let me check the menu and call back."
