I'm trying to think hard about something positive to say but nothing is sticking. I don't mind the interior, reminds me of Mexico. The food however is a total miss. It's not great and cost much more than it should. I got shrimp tacos, one of my go to's. The overwhelming amount of peppers masked the shrimp and the cheese didn't add anything to the flavor palette. I'd get tacombi's shrimp tacos over these any day. The service was solid though. They were attentive and reasonably quick. read more

So I come here a lot, mainly because of location and convenience. It's not the best Mexican I've had, but they are consistent. Its not fancy inside but it's nice enough to just have a simple meal. The only thing that I regret is not taking pictures before eating. The food is delicious. The restaurant has a Homey vibe. It is like you are at a family member's house. Your cousins make sure that you are taken care of with enough pepper sauces and utensils. We had the salmon as well as the taco platter with steak and chicken. The plantain rice is some thing that I didn't know I needed in my life. I have never seen it made before and coming from the Caribbean, I wonder what has taken it so long to arrive into my mouth. We also had the elote asada that came with a generous amount of cheese. The Jamaica agua fresca was refreshing and not too sweet. I definitely recommend this place and hope to return. read more

Food here is pretty good, and pretty affordable - esp the lunch specials! As a Texan in NYC, I have very low expectations for Mexican food here. It's never gonna be as good as TX and everyone knows that! This place is consistently good. I usually get the chicken fajitas which I enjoy. Rice and beans are good too. I go with the corn tortillas bc they don't have homemade flour tortillas (I don't think anyone in NYC does though?) Guac is pretty good and I love that it's not $20 for a small side like some places charge (I'm looking at you Dos Caminos!). Margs are small, but decent. Mimosas were pretty meh. Overall, a good choice in Greenpoint. Small inside, but a good amount of outdoor seating. Also a great delivery option. read more

I don't know why Vamos doesn't have a higher rating; I've been coming here for years and love it! And I'm Mexican and was born and raised in LA so I think I know good Mexican food. Vamos is probably better known for brunch (which is amazing--incredible huevos rancheros) but in my opinion it's severely underrated as a casual dinner spot! I LOVE the pollo asado (chicken) tacos, and usually I think chicken is boring on tacos but theirs is delicious. That said, literally all of the food is good. Portions are large and generous, they have a full bar, service is great, and it's very affordable, especially compared with other restaurants nearby. The inside is very spacious too so it's good for groups, and sitting outside is really fun when it's nice out. It really has everything you want from a restaurant. read more

Served in a small wine glass - Not very good. My partner's Bloody Mary was really spicy and she also could not enjoy her drink. However when the food came out, serving size was generous and all looked delicious. My hue is campesino was flavorful and not too salty. Only element that was missing was maybe cheese of some kind. I ordered a side of sweet plantains to compliment my dish, can't go wrong with it. My partner's breakfast plate also very generous portions. Basic dish, nothing special. The chorizo was diced up into very small pieces which is almost an inconvenience... Staff was nice, we had 2 waitresses tending to our needs. Inside of the restaurant looked pretty clean. Wandering along on a hot Saturday early-evening brought us to this Mexican joint with some outdoor seating. Managed to get a table by the door and was immediately given the large menu. Just missed the brunch cutoff(12-5pm), so opted instead for the Burrito Maestro ($12.50), Frozen Margarita ($?), and a side of Plantains ($?). Burrito is a hefty mass of pork, rice, zucchini and other veggies; topped off by some sour cream, guacamole, pico del gallo, and cheese. Rice to meat ratio isn't the best, but really like the side salsa and guacamole. Favorite part of meal was probably the sweet plantains, which were cooked perfectly. Service started off solid then tailed off afterwards. Would want to come back and try the brunch deal. read more

This is one of the more authentic Mexican restaurants in Greenpoint. It's where you can go to get legit Mexican food at a good price. Today I had lunch here with friends after checking out an event at the Brooklyn Expo. It's a short distance from here if you are ever looking for something to eat after seeing something at the Expo building. It's also close to Word bookstore on Franklin. My one friend ordered the vegetarian platter and she was a fan. Her boyfriend is vegan, and he was able to order a burrito without queso fresca and sour cream; Vamos was cool with catering to his dietary needs. My hubby ordered the Nopal Salad. They all liked their food. I ordered the Tamales de Friljos, which had black beans and cheese and covered in mole sauce. They garnished my tamales app as with a tasty slaw, sliver of mango, and pineapple cubes, which worked well with the deep flavors of the mole. Of course, I ordered a Mexican Coca Cola with my dish. I recommend Vamos Al Tequila if you are looking for good Mexican food at a reasonable price. Note: It's not the fastest place in terms of service. If you are looking to dine quickly, wait for another time to try this place out. However, f you are looking for a relaxing, slow paced meal and drinks, then you're all good here. read more

This place was just ok. (First time here) The thing is that they are not staffed properly. This place is a busy spot, I don't know why because food wasn't the best at all in my opinion. Let's just let this deal speak for itself: 13.50 will you buy you... -a cup of coffee -an alcoholic beverage, like a mimosa -chips and salsa -an entre w. your choice of home fries or rice and beans So, even if the food is ok and the service is slow - why, why does this place have 3.5 stars, you gentrifying "authenticity" craving cry babies. But, here's the thing, the service was fine...two servers in a big dining room so when it got crowded they were a bit slammed with stuff to do but my partner and I still got everything that we wanted in a pretty timely manner. Next, the food was great and the drink was good too: -Coffee is either a regular cup of coffee or a cafe con leche. They are both good. The cafe con leche was creamy and caramely and delicious. -Chips and salsa came out first and the salsa is awesome and flavorful -I got breakfast enchiladas with home fries. Also delicious. Scrambled eggs, well cooked and seasoned inside of a corn tortilla, all smothered in salsa verde. The home fries, one of my favorite parts of the meal, were crunchy, well seasoned, and full of slices of caramelized onion, also crunchy. You guys, I love diners, and this was one of the best orders of home fries I've ever gotten. -My partner got Chilaquiles and it was also delicious. Here's her take: "The chilaquiles were delicious and so filling. They had beans, lettuce, radish, tomato, green salsa, cheese and your choice of steak, chicken or eggs. I had the steak chilaquiles and I devoured them because they tasted like authentic Mexican chilaquiles." The portions were a good size. I was full for several hours after the meal. Overall an awesome experience. It was this afternoon and I already can't wait to go back. Please go. Please leave a positive review so this place gets the Yelp clout it deserves. read more

A restaurant owned by BIGOTS! I have cerebral palsy and am in a wheelchair. My friend (a black woman), and I came to eat at this restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. The waitress was blatantly discriminatory and tried to force us out of the restaurant. If you have a disability or are in a wheelchair, DO NOT EAT HERE. They made it clear they did not want us in their establishment. Here's the series of events: Our waitress took everyone's order, including drinks and food before finally coming to take our order, despite the fact that we were there before three other parties showed up. The other tables received their drinks and appetizer before we even got our drink order in. [fast forward to after we got our food]. She brought our check while we were still eating our entrees. We eventually gave her our card to pay for our meal once we were done eating. While waiting for our card to come back to the table, she brought out other people's food (including a hot skillet and another entree) and set it down at our table while we were sitting there. She also brought the people that were waiting for our table out of the inner part of the restaurant. This forced us to get up from our table, and allowed the next people to take over our table, despite us not having signed our check or left a tip. She then said "sorry you had to wait so long" to the people that took over our table. Keep in mind, WE STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN OUR CARD BACK!! I literally had to sign the bill standing up outside of the restaurant. It was clear she did not want us there. read more

What can I say? Best, most authentic mexican food in Greenpoint. But I really hope they improve their service. The reviews for this place are pretty accurate: excellent food, okay to terrible service. I just read a review and it's crazy how I had almost the same exact thing happen to me. When you order fajitas, on the menu it says, "flour or corn." But it's on you as the customer make sure you tell them which one you want, or else it comes automatically with corn. On the surface, it doesn't sound like a herculean task, but when you're at a restaurant you tend to get comfortable, so it's possible you'll forget. But why not just ask the customer, "flour or corn?" It's THREE words! How hard is that? So one time, I forgot to specify and out comes my order with corn tortillas. I asked them if it was possible to get flour instead, and our server said it'd cost $3. It just blew my mind. I seriously don't get this ridiculous policy. Anyway, other than the pretty questionable service, the food really is that good. Coming from California, this place makes me feel right at home. So, please, Vamos! Improve your customer service! This place is quite solid and recommended to all Greenpoint residents. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but if you are in the 'hood you should totez check it out. Firstly, it's refreshing to go into a mexican restaurant in northern brooklyn that is run by actual mexicans, and not hipsters serving artisanal tacos at jacked up prices. Most of the menu is traditional, the portions are good, the prices are fair, and the inside is decorated with sombreros and corona posters and shit (not post modern art installations and reclaimed wood). The lady and I got a few thangs to split, two big ol' margaritas, and the bill was just a bit over $40. We split the carnitas tacos, the breaded tuna tacos, and the chilles rellenos. Everything was super fresh and tasty. The service was great (although they did sorta rush my indecisive-ass). They kept the free chips and (spicy!) salsa a-flowin'. The Margs coulda been a little stronger, but I'm a booze-hound and always say that. Overall, B+. If you're in Greenpoint, keep this one in your pocket. read more

It's so sad to experience racism or racial profiling but it's even sadder from your own Spanish people. This is the second time I come to this restaurant and the last. The first I went they were very rude & the second time as well. The second time we came in (group of 5) and instead of trying to accommodate us they were making excuses so we would leave. Such as we can't move tables and the credit card machine isn't working "we only taking cash, do you have enough cash?" We were shocked because that's not what we were asking we were asking how long would be the wait for a bigger table. They completely pushed us away. & we squeezed into a table. Mean while everyone else (white folks) were paying with credit cards, had tables moved for them and were greeted nicely with no attitude or assumptions of whether they could pay or not (& no one was told that the machine was broken) It's just ridiculous how people treat others. As big group started coming in they would accommodate them and their group. & we asked why they told us the machine was broke the lady just starred at us and said "sometimes it's broken, sometimes it's not" but not one person the whole time we were there paid with cash, or was even told about this broken machine. Thankfully Lizzy made our stay better as she gave great customer service. The older lady was the rude one. read more
