I walked in around noon on a Tuesday and was immediately greeted by the bartender. I sat at the bar, and he informed me of their lunch special: 2 tacos + rice & beans for $15 OR a burrito and a beer for $16. Without hesitation, I ordered 2 barbacoa tacos and a margarita. The tacos were amazingggg. I'm salivating simply typing this review. I thought I may need more food but honestly the tacos were packed and the margarita was beyond delicious (no mixer crap). Came here on a Saturday with my husband and two daughters (7&11) . Seated right away kind of empty when we came in. My youngest daughter is very picky so she only ordered chips lol my husband got a wet Barbacoa burrito. My 11 year old got grilled chicken burrito. I got the nachos with chicken. We also ordered margaritas and my daughter got a strawberry,cucumber lemonade. Food came out rather quickly. As soon as I saw my chips i thought I wouldn't like them because I saw the cheese is like a sauce. Last time a Mexican restaurant gave me that on my nachos it was gross it tasted like velveeta. Came here on a rainy Friday night to get some comfort Tex Mex food. I started off with a Paloma and a shrimp burrito bowl. The Paloma was solid and the shrimp burrito bowl was great. Afterwards, I had a little room left and ordered a Mexican corn app to split with my bf. The portion was huge! However, it was a little disappointing because I was expecting to be more spicy than it was. Totally avoid. I've been living in Greenpoint since 2009 and started ordering from and going to this Calexico since it opened hardly a year or two later. So for 13+ years. The first 7-8 years were totally great. Typical for this area early on -- hipstery bartenders and hostesses and wait staff but who were still cool and nice and friendly and for hipsters pretty attentive. But most importantly really good food. Don't be crazy and get me wrong -- not exactly authentic Mexican -- but really tasty and totally worth it price-wise. And the drinks/happy hours too. This was totally a weekly (or even more frequent) spot. Now I cannot deal with this place anymore. We can go over all of the cliche reasons like management and staff have obviously changed etc, but the bottom line is this place is terrible now because it started getting stupid expensive years ago, way before the pandemic/inflation, and the food just isn't good anymore. And not to mention the portion size is insanely skimpy. I guess that's the bright side when the food sucks anyway? And I shouldn't paint with too wide of brush but the staff is kind of horrible now it seems. The hosts are not friendly and the wait staff is rude. And the short, short-haired dude I keep seeing at the bar who I think unfortunately doubles as the manager is a total jerk. I would so love to have some totally inattentive but at least authentic hipsters back instead... I guess the last thing to say is that they say they are open and serve food until 10pm, but be advised that serves food "until 10pm" actually means "until 9pm." I've gone in quite a few times now to eat over the last 4 years but granted usually around 9 or so and the jerk at the bar or one of his jerkettes on the floor always say something along the lines of "the kitchen is closing but I guess if you want something quick and take it to go, fine." Cool spot on the busy Manhattan Ave strip in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Dimly lit, but not overly dark. Easily can go between family dinner to a cocktail date. Service was good, from the host to the waiter to the bus-person. Sometimes a little too fast but rather that then slow service. read more

2 stars for our last visit. For everything from service to food presentation to price / value for meal . We were sitting inside and the A/C was dripping on us so we moved to another table, we told the busser about the dripping and they still set the table should anyone come in , we couldn't believe it. When I asked the manager on duty about food prep he told us "I'm sorry I'm new here , please ask your server " who unfortunately seemed just as confused by my request. So a big let down on this visit, hope they get it together. TLDR: Fantastic happy hour (buy one get one on select drinks), great burritos that will be sure to fill you up, great ambiance. Made it in time for happy hour and was able to get a margarita, a draft beer, and the cali style burrito. The draft beer was fresh and the margarita was well balanced with an included salt rim as well. I got to go with a friend who also got a margarita and beer because the happy hour deal was buy one get one free. Cali style Burrito - personally felt the french fries were overpowering the other flavors and had to take my time to get a taste of everything. Nothing that a little hot sauce wouldn't fix either. I like this place. I went on a hot summer day, after a long walk, and it really hit the spot. You can either sit at the bar, or at a table. The ambience is casual but fun. I ordered the black bean taco, which was a soft taco, and the ground beet taco, which was in a hard shell. Both were pretty tasty. The black bean taco was pretty standard: messy to eat but packed with flavorful ingredients. The ground beet stayed together better as it was in a hard shell taco, but the beet flavor was interesting. It was seasoned with mexican spices, and the texture was similar to ground beef. Came here the other night with a friend for dinner and I thought it was a cute low key Mexican spot. My friend got the burrito and chicken quesadilla , the orange sauce that came with it was really good. The burrito was huge and really good. I ended up getting the chicken taco and the gringo taco. The gringo taco reminded me of Taco Bell, but the chicken rack was good. Along with this we also tried the margaritas, they were delicious. All in all a great spot for a quick dinner! New York in general just doesn't do good Mexican (imo). Anyway, this seems like a nice place to grab a drink and dinner with friends. I love California style Mexican food and that's exactly what Calexico brings. Conveniently located by McCarren Park, Calexico offers a great alternative to a very bustling part of town with a wide variety of different types of foods. Their meats are extremely tender, marinated and delicious. Everything is accompanied by traditional Mexican spices and vegetables and their flour tortillas are always warm and delicious. Mind you, we spent almost $50 dollars! We asked for extra shrimp but I mean damn, $50?! I could've literally ate at so many better places for that price. I have to agree w/ other yelpers on their outrageous markups, and to take advantage of people during covid is super not cool!! Wonderful customer service. I ordered take out and a part of my order was missing, but they were able to delivery the missing items within 5-10 minutes. The food itself was delicious. I am not usually a fan of jalapeño poppers, but these were different from any I have had before they were incredible and I strongly recommend. Biiiig Calexico fan (or at least this specific location). I've come here several times and I'm never disappointed. My go-to order is the shredded brussel sprouts and a wet bean burrito. As someone who loves Cal-Mex food, I had been searching for a good-ass wet burrito, and lo and behold, I have found one (so thank you). We came in last night and sat at the bar so we didn't have to wait 15-20 mins for a table. With 5 mins to spare, we took advantage of the 2 for 1 house margarita special. The traditional margaritas were surprisingly good. I usually don't enjoy them on the rocks but these were pleasant and well-balanced. After we knocked those back I ordered a frozen mango margarita. It was sour AF! Every sip was followed by a wince on my face! They should ease up on the sour mix by a lot. The Pepino Mojito was enjoyable and not overly sweet. To eat we ordered the smoked queso dip. This was actually really food. It comes with a crispy baked top which makes it even better for the first several dips. We also ordered the crispy rolled tacos. It comes with spicy pork on the inside which is delicious in itself but not the best combo with an overly sour marg. But my stomach soldiered through it until the end.
