I really wanted to like Xolo. One of my favorite Mexican spots in South Williamsburg, Aldama, recently closed, leaving a void to be filled. You used to be able to enjoy a meal and mezcal there, then walk the quiet streets along Wythe and Berry and pretend you were in GDL's Colonia Americana. In any case, the tacos here left me pretty underwhelmed. I ordered the mushroom variety - the salsas were fairly standard, and the tortillas didn't seem to have been made freshly. Huitlacoche would have been a much better substitute for the mushroom filling. Overall, a pretty standard neighborhood Mexican bistro that I had higher hopes for. read more

We had looked up the spot prior to visiting the area and were pleasantly surprised that it was not packed on a weekend. It has cute vibes, unique dishes and fairly decent food. Really family friendly and accommodating. We had some cocktails, the spicy guava and home made Pina colada mix. The fried cheese with pistachio cream was luscious almost like a desert - what a great combination of tart, tangy, creamy with a touch of sweetness. Guac and chips were fresh too! El pastor was ok, a bit dry in my opinion but the fresh tortillas and toppings made it easy to down. The star was the Baja fish tacos, juicy and crunch and big chunks of fish made these a great choice. It's no wonder it's a best seller. I would come back to try other cocktails and the chicken mole tacos (wish i had ordered that instead). *** 3.5 stars *** I brought my mentee here for lunch on her 16th birthday and the server was really sweet and arranged for her to have surprise birthday churros with a birthday candle. I did have to pay for the churros and they were a bit pricey, but definitely worth it since it was the best part of the lunch. The chicken tacos that I had were okay - not the most authentic or flavorful - so I probably wouldn't come back, but maybe this is more of an evening / drinks type spot as it was pretty empty when we were there. read more

Very hip Mexican place. I caught up with my friend here-- and it was good vibes and music all around with great service. You also have a view of the Brooklyn bridge! The guac and chips were pretty decent, and so were the drinks. However, when it came to the entree (the enchilada verdes) it was kind of a letdown. I asked for the vegan option for my dish and it was drenched in sauce... completely so much so that the enchilada was soggy. Looked like enchilada soup, which I did not ask for. Maybe if you steer clear of that particular dish, it would be better. I did not finish my plate. read more

Definitely enjoyed this spot! Guac and chips were delicious, with a few little pomegranate seeds to add texture and flavor. The goat cheese balls were a welcome surprise (have never seen this at a Mexican restaurant before), served on a bed of a creamy pistachio sauce and drizzled with honey...YUM! Tuna tostadas were also wonderful! I really enjoyed my chicken enchilada with salsa verde as well. Ambiance was nice and they played salsa music the entire evening, which personally I loved. My cocktail was just okay... tasted a bit watered down which was a little disappointing but still didn't put a damper on the experience as a whole. It's also a bit on the pricier side for what it is, but again, I'm okay with that. Dessert was nothing to write home about - the churros were a little on the drier side. Checked Xolo out on a Wednesday with a couple friends. We were sat at a table and the view of the Williamsburg bridge here is majestic. Food: - guac (4/5) what you would expect, though a major highlight was the sauce they brought with it. This was amazing and I would buy a bottle if they sold it. - fried got cheese with pistachio and honey (4.5/5) this was very nice. Such a delicious restaurant with a great view of the Williamsburg bridge. The staff here was also exceptionally friendly and welcoming. We ordered an assortment of appetizers and epecially loved the ahi tuna nachos (special) and the cheese quesadilla. I ordered the salsa verde enchilladas, and my husband and friends ordered different tacos. All of the entrees were a 10/10. Wow this place is amazing. I went there with an hour left before closing but the staff never made us feel like we needed to rush and leave. I ordered a tequila based drink with passionfruit. For app we got the elote and chicharrones. The corn was delicious but definitely not a big enough portion. the chicharrones were good but the pepita dip was really what made it. portion was also small though, 2-3 chunks. For meal, I ordered the carne asada tacos and they were amazing! so tasty. the tortilla was slightly crunchy with a nice layer of melted cheese. The meat was deliciously flavored. glad i went & enjoyed the experience but likely wouldn't come back or recommend it to others. it was a the highest rated mexican restaurant that was open on a tuesday evening so we went it. around 8pm we were one of 2 tables the entire 2 hours we were there. the service was EXTREMELY friendly and attentive. the food was delicious but nothing special. especially given the price i would expect some tasty bites though i still consider it a pricey night. we got the quesadilla app, mini tostadas, a burrito, and churros split between 2. we finished all our food and the total was $90 incl tip&tax. read more

The best thing was probably the goat cheese ball appetizer, which was unusual for a Mexican restaurant, but we liked it. Most of us ordered the fish tacos for the entree and while decent, definitely not going to blow you away. Main gripe was the fish was not as warm as I would have liked, may have been sitting a while. As a kid from Southern California, it's been really depressing eating Mexican food in NYC until I came here. This is the best Mexican food I've had in NYC. It's become a frequent. Very flavorful, great menu selection, well priced. My only complaint is they aren't open everyday for lunch so I can come more often. read more

Came here for dinner. The upper level is a full restaurant while the lower level is a sort of lounge / speakeasy with a limited food menu. We started with the tuna tostadas. This was my favorite dish of the evening. We also had a couple margaritas - a watermelon one and a cucumber/ mint one. Next, we had fried goat cheese balls with honey and nuts. For the main course, we shared the skirt steak and fried fish tacos. Steak came with a salad, a couple chips with guac, and fries. All in all, it was a good value. There are so many other Mexican spots in New York that just miss the mark - Xolo stands apart and is truly a top tier Mexican restaurant in NYC! When you are in Williamsburg stop trying to fight for the next trendy reservation weeks out for overpriced average food with poor service that doesn't make you feel welcome, and give Xolo a shot. My recent visit to xolo left me deeply dissatisfied and disappointed . Being someone who avidly enjoys Mexican food, I was excited to try out this new restaurant. I came on a Saturday and from the moment I stepped in, the hostess was very rude as she had an attitude with my table the whole night overall enjoyed the food and would recommend the the spicy guava margarita and the shrimp tacos. However, the decorations were also extremely tacky and distasteful, especially regarding this one sign put up as pictured. It's very insensitive to those with mental health issues. read more

The meat was juicy, tender, and a generous portion. Tacos - Grilled Mushroom tacos (asparagus, grilled onions, poblano peppers and cheese). So good! Loved the handmade tortillas. The mushroom were seasoned at its perfection. Dessert - cajeta flan (served with berries and chocolate crema). You can't go wrong with dessert. The presentation and portion were perfect.
