I also got a side of chips and salsa and that was also delicious. The salsa is different from what they pack for tacos. I also got the Lengua tacos and it wasn't the texture I was used to. Visited on weekday afternoon. They had plenty of street parking spaces in front of the store. It was convinient to find the parking. They have a small covered patio space near entrance. The waitress was very nice and welcoming. This restaurant offers mexican dishes and beverages and some fresh fruit smoothies. We ordered tamales, enchiladas with rice and beans, tacos, straberry smoothies. Tamales: comes out with steam. Very hot when they come. It was very authentic! Not too greasy like others. It was right amount of grease and portion was pretty generous too. Enchiladas: it tasted like a homemade (meaning doesnt taste like a factory, like taco bell) not overly flavored. I enjoyed the "regular" enchilada. Everywhere else I have visited tasted too strong and fake. Rice and beans: again rice and beans Tacos: i loved their tortillas. Kind of chewy. Not too raw. Meat was just about right. Portion is generous Smoothies: little too sweet. If you dont like sweetness, make sure ask for little unsweetened. Being Mexican myself, I feel that my opinion carries some weight so here we go... This is the worst Mexican food I have ever had. If zero stars could be given, it would. What I ordered: Enchiladas Rojas with cheese What the table ordered: Al Pastor Burrito Fajitas de Camarones Milanes de Rea To start off, all of our food was served cold except the Fajitas de Camarones. The Fajitas came out on a hot skillet which was fun to see but unfortunately the hot skillet wasn't warm enough to heat up the other dishes at the table. Now let's talk flavor. NONE. None of the food had any flavor. Now one may be asking, "How is it possible to have Mexican food with no flavor?" I HAVE NO IDEA. Not a single spice or even dash of salt was used. Everything tasted old or even possibly pre made hours before. The cheese used in the enchiladas had a rubbery texture and the enchilada sauce was extra sweet. My enchiladas came with a side of black beans and rice which were both just as disappointing. I am truly curious to know where in Mexico this food is from because I am in utter disbelief that someone could make Mexican food taste this awful. The one redeeming factor of this place, was our waitress. She was the only one waiting on the tables so I give her props for handling the dining and preparing take out orders. Fresh and authentic! More than 6 years ago, I had my first and one of the best tortas ever from this under-rated gem. I am typing as I chomp on this messy flavor-bomb, and not wasting one drop. The bread is amazing, everything is well seasoned and melds together in the best way ever. The only other torta to compare to La Mesita's is from a little hole in the wall deli in Coney Island. I really liked the salsa they brought out although it was sweeter and a bit different from others that I've had. Chicken enchiladas with salsa verde? Delicious. So good that when I brought the leftovers to work for lunch the next day, my colleague asked me to order her an order of them next time I went even though we work in Manhattan. Ha. Best Mexican food I've had in NYC! It's actually on par with California Mexican and right around the corner from where I live! It's my roomie's favorite Mexican joint in the neighborhood too, so 2 thumbs up from Cali Mexican grub snobs. You can ask for black beans in the veggie burrito, and it also has sauteed veggies inside with rice. It comes with a generous scoop of guacamole and pico de gallo -- both with lots and lots of raw onion!! Just the way real Mexican condiments should be!! Their tortilla chips are also super crunchy, just the right thickness and don't taste disgustingly greasy. This place is a family owned restaurant with a pretty spacious dining room.
