Sat at the bar to have dinner. Ordered agedashi, squid, smoked salmon, toramasa roll and tuna/salmon tataki. Everything was tasty and reasonably priced. Place was pretty busy but service was pretty fast. Not too noisy. Food was good and staff friendly. Would come here again when we come back to Vancouver.

We love that this place is close to the Queen E theater and we can get an awesome dinner here before the show! The daily fresh sheet is always exciting and interesting to try new things. Tonight's dinner: smoked salmon salad, deep fried fish cakes, pork cutlet, kimchi fried rice, chicken karaage with spicy chili sauce, and bbq eel omelette. The service here is awesome and attentive. The food comes out fast and usually all at once or close to it. The place is usually packed during peak hours so make a reservation if you can. We will be back again soon!

Guu Toramasa is a cozy izakaya that's great for solo dinners -- just note that they'll seat you at the counter if you're alone. I actually like that vibe; it feels casual and lively. They have a rotating specials menu, so it's always worth checking it out before ordering. One of the best deals is the 3-appetizer combo for $18 -- highly recommend it! I picked: Ume-marinated daikon and wakame: light, tangy, and refreshing -- perfect after a long day Chikuwa tempura: crispy with a nice seaweed flavor Simmered eggplant: soft and flavorful, soaked in umami-rich broth Also grabbed their "Ganso Yaki Udon" to-go -- can't wait to dig into that later. Will definitely be back to try more of the rotating dishes. Solid spot for a quick but satisfying Japanese meal.

I think I came into this place with the wrong expectations. I thought this is just a traditional Japanese restaurant with sushi and stuff like that, but I would say it's more like bar food. When we walked in we noticed that there was a lot of young people there and it was hard to flag down somebody. The menu was not your traditional menu what I remember I couldn't really read it or picture what the items look like except if they're on Yelp. The food was fine to me. It's like your traditional fried rice and yaki udon. There was some fried chicken that we ordered. I think it was chicken karage, but nothing really stood out. I thought really out of place there myself. It just felt very clicky and more like a hangout spot than a restaurant.

I just wanted to have something light for dinner so I was searching yelp for a good place and I stumbled upon this place, which was a pure gem! Very nice staff and the food was very different from your everyday Japanese restaurant ... and it was also very affordable

you know that classic question: "what do you feel like having for dinner?" followed by the inevitable "where?" this time, we ended up at guu toramasa on a monday night around 8:00 pm, even then, the place was busy, always a good sign, but we had made reservations, so we were all set. everything we had was truly guu'd. we started with the three appetizers for $18, choosing: seaweed salt fries: our favourite, perfectly fried, crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, with just the right hit of salt. pork tenderloin cutlet: juicy and satisfying. 'tofu steak': served sizzling hot, you can see the splatter of grease around the dish, with a generous pile of ginger and green onion sauce reminiscent of hainanese chicken rice, and vegan friendly. the grilled chicken with garlic salt was sheer perfection, tender, juicy, flavourful, and cooked just right. we also shared our go tos, the kimchi fried rice and tuna and salmon tataki, both fresh and delicious. what i love about guu is how they keep their regular menu of classics but also feature daily specials. the variety is impressive, from sashimi to temaki and osaka style street food, fun cocktails and all authentically japanese and oh so guu'd. they're also celebrating 30 years of the guu chain, a true testament to their consistency, creativity, and loyal following. the service was warm and attentive, and the casual, lively ambiance made it the perfect spot to unwind after a long day. so next time that familiar dinner question comes up, 'what to eat, and where to eat it?', guu toramasa is often our answer, and it's always a very guu'd choice.

Was able to snag a reso for last min lunch spot. I'm not sure if it was because it was the holiday season but it was packed during lunch. Service was a bit slow because of this, buteverything we ordered tasted really good. It was a bite limited for lunch menu but they had some decently priced lunch specials. Glad to have a Guu so close to work.

Visited guu toramasa for a friend's birthday! Nice spot that was able to accommodate a large group in a nice private enclosed spot. We had a 2 hour dining time and we were not able to split the bill - either 1 bill or all evenly split - no problem, we just got one in the end and figured everything ourselves afterwards. As for the food - very delicious! My favorites of the evening were the beef tataki and clam udon. The clams were cooked perfectly and went well with the bouncy udon.

Tried a bunch of dishes for the first time, and honestly everything was pretty good. I'd come back, and maybe skip the drinks (it's not bad or anything, but nothing too special for the price). Aburi Mackerel ($18): Honestly pretty worth it, they don't cheap out and there were more slices than I thought. It's seared on the outside, but it's mostly a sashimi. Served with a few pieces of seaweed, ginger and wasabi. Crispy Karaage with Spicy Chili Sauce ($17): Comes with 3 large pieces of juicy chicken, deep fried in a batter. Not very spicy, has more of a sweety n' spicy sauce on it. I liked the pairing with celery, I feel like celery isn't used very often in Japanese cuisine so that was refreshing. Yaki Udon ($15.50): Good but nothing too amazing. Comes with sliced beef and some veggies. Smoked Salmon Onion Salad: It's literally all onion, but it isn't spicy or very onion-y, surprising one of my favourite dishes overall. Good portion of smoked salmon on top of the onion. It's on their featured menu, so I'm not sure if this is available all the time. Grilled Squid: full squid, very tender, has that bbq grill flavour to it - reminds me of night markets/street food. Side of mayo to dip. Got two drinks, one was yuzu and the other one was also citrus. Also good and fruity, but nothing too special. SUPER friendly staff, very attentive they'd literally take the plate away as soon as you're done with it. Nice spacious seating, simply Japanese-style interior. They have an easy online reservation, which I did for a Friday night, but there were lots of empty seats. I'd probably just walk in next time. Dinner for 2 people - total bill (with drinks) was about $100. Not cheap, but not super fancy. Nice dinner spot every once in a while. I'd recommend and come again!

I am from Osaka, and I heard that GUU has opened a restaurant offering Osaka's soul food! This is a place that cannot be missed. Excited about the news, I decided to visit and try several dishes. What I ordered: Takosen Takoyaki was encased within a thin shrimp rice cracker. The taste was satisfactory, and the appearance was both impactful and intriguing. I highly recommend customers to try this item kushikatsu - Kushikatsu is one of the most famous items in Osaka. While I've had a better version at another restaurant in Vancouver, this dish at GUU is still decent. lamb chashuOne of the best dishes on the menu! The lamb was exceptionally tender, and the sauce was truly delicious. While it may not be a traditional Osaka soul food, I highly recommend trying this dish. intestines BBQ This dish was exceptionally good. The intestine meat was juicy, tender, and had just the right amount of fat. I will definitely order it again. sujikon(beef tendon) yakisobaThis is a Osaka soul food. At first glance, it may seem like ordinary stir-fried noodles, but the inclusion of stewed beef tendon. Yes, this one is also delicious. The sauce was just perfect, and I really enjoyed this dish red ginger tenpura - This dish is a unique creation from Osaka. While ginger tempura may not be widely known among Japanese, local Osaka residents love this item. Unfortunately, on this occasion, the dish fell short. The tempura batter was excessively soggy, with an overwhelming amount of batter. I hope to see improvements on my next visit yuzu cheesecake - The dessert was just fine, featuring a very basic Yuzu-flavored cheesecake Overall, I enjoyed my experience at this restaurant. The service was exceptionally good. While some of the food items may require refinement, I will definitely visit again. Perhaps next time, with friends from Osaka.

Got the beef tataki and clam noodles. Really delicious and would highly recommend! The menu can be challenging to read at first, but it makes sense after a second.

Nice lunch experience here with a big group of about 10. Needless to say we made a reservation. The design of the restaurant has plenty of Japanese touches with a few semi-private rooms. The servers were polite and came around often to refill the complimentary tea and check in. We each got our own entrees and ordered appetizers (edamame and takoyaki) and desserts to share. The edamame was good, I didn't try the takoyaki but it looked great. Although I enjoyed snacking on the edamame, appetizers were definitely not necessary because the entrees were huge. I ordered the tofu vege don which was a tasty and satisfying vegetarian option. The broccoli and cauliflower were not cooked uniformly and some pieces had a little more crunch than I would have liked, but that's the only thing I can nitpick. The donburi came with a choice of salad or miso soup and another daily side. The salad was really nice with a variety of fresh veggies. The side was a crabmeat salad which was also fresh and had a good smooth flavour. A vegetarian side was also available on request. There were pretty significant gaps between the timing of the entrees arriving which was a little unfortunate since there seemed to be an agreement that we were going to wait for everyone's food to get to them before anyone started, and my bowl, which came out in the middle, had gone from hot to warm by the time I got to dig in. With that many people it probably can't be helped, and it's more of our fault for not just eating as things came out. We ordered a few different desserts: yuzu cheesecake, strawberry daifuku, and mango mochi ice, all served with green tea ice cream. All were delicious. My favourite was the strawberry daifuku; I've only had the packaged convenience store versions of this before, so this blew those out of the water with the juicy strawberry compote. The mango flavour in the mochi ice cream was very vibrant, while the yuzu in the cheesecake was more like an accent to bring out the tang of the cream cheese. I loved the green tea ice cream; it wasn't too sweet and really tasted like tea. It's not an upscale restaurant but the environment and the quality and presentation of the food hit a middle ground that's nicer than a lot of casual restaurants but more approachable than some of the more famous izakaya restaurants. I was super impressed by the portion sizes (no one out of 10 of us were able to finish our entrees) and because of that I'd say the prices are actually pretty decent for this kind of food, since lots of similar places will charge the same but give less. Would be happy to return.

I always order beef tongue, Japanese fried chicken, and shrimp mayonnaise. These are my must-orders and their signature dishes. The beef tongue is actually quite simple; it's delicious just from being lightly heated. The hot stone slab is served piping hot, perfect for searing meat. Be quick, or it will cool down. The Japanese fried chicken is tender, juicy, and incredibly fragrant. The seasoning is just right. The shrimp mayonnaise is plentiful and a perfect match for beer. The two seasonal or specialty dishes of the day weren't as good, and I wouldn't order them again. My advice is to order their most popular and classic dishes, and definitely make a reservation in advance if you want to come (especially on weekends, as the wait can be up to an hour).

Japanese cuisine demands high standards for ingredients and details, and Kingyo excelled in both taste, ingredients, and presentation. The restaurant's ambiance was also very Japanese--refined yet not overly formal, creating a comfortable and relaxing space. This visit left a very positive impression. The service, food, environment, and atmosphere all made me feel very comfortable, making it a restaurant I would definitely visit again.

One of the best parts is the ever-changing menu of daily specials alongside the regular menu, so there's always something new to try while still coming back to your favorites. This visit we ordered the shrimp garlic fried rice, Agedashi Nasu, Grilled Squid with Garlic Mayo, and an assortment of sashimi. The shrimp garlic fried rice is an absolute must every time. It's packed with flavor, perfectly seasoned, and somehow manages to be comforting without feeling too heavy. It is a large dish and can easily be shared by 3-4, depending on what else you order. We also love the Agedashi Nasu here with melt-in-your-mouth eggplant wrapped in a light, delicate coating that soaks up the savory broth. Service is always quick and organized, even when the restaurant is busy. Dishes arrive as they're ready, making it easy to share everything around the table, which is exactly how an izakaya experience should feel. If it's your first visit, don't skip the shrimp garlic fried rice, and make sure to check out the daily specials before ordering. But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

I made reservations about 4 months in advance. Upon arrival, one of the hostesses opened the door for us, and asked us to wait in a very ornate waiting area. We only waited a couple of minutes before another hostess seated us at the main seating area. The space is very dark, and only lit with candles while the rest of the diners trickled in. During that time they take drink orders, which is limited to sake, wine, beer and a few non-alcoholic drinks. Of note, they don't provide a drink menu, so we were a little surprised by the cost - the yuzu sake and the plum wine were $30 each. My non-alcoholic drink was $12, but a fair size. The theatrical portion started a few minutes later than the official start time - closer to 6pm. The shades lifted, the lights turned on, and the chefs introduced themselves. And from that moment on, they immediately went to work preparing our meal. They operate like clockwork to show the ingredients whole to the diners, and then preparing them, and serving them. Soon as the one dish was completed by all the diners, the next round came shortly after. Over 20+ dishes, there was very little wait time in between each. Each time a dish was served, a hostess was there to describe the dish and provided tips on how best to eat it. The food was overall was very good. I thought a few items were very average, most of them were very good, and a select few were truly outstanding. Most of the ingredients are imported from Japan, so I would imagine that it's part of the reason it's so expensive. This is definitely a splurge meal. I think half the diners at our sitting was celebrating a birthday. On the most part, the food is very good, watching the chefs at work is part of the entertainment, and the service is excellent. Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.
