Overall, Gus's BBQ is a decent spot to grab some food, but I won't be rushing back anytime soon. Despite being seated right away on a Sunday afternoon, we waited for almost 15 minutes for our waitress to come by and greet us. We asked for a bowl of chili, BBQ chopped salad and I asked for the Cobb Salad but requested to sub tri trip. My husband really liked his salad, but the chili and my salad weren't anything special. To charge an extra $9 for the tri trip for the amount I received was pretty disappointing. Our to go container lids for the chili didn't fit and the meal felt expensive for what we got. Trying to decide what to eat at this centre in Porter Ranch Boy did I make the right choice! GUSS BBQ you just got yourself a new fan for life ! Delicious. I had a tri- tip salad that was nice and rare and had the best ingredients. Not your run of the mill the cook is brilliant. Service from the server perspective is not the best, (we had two in one night and both were awful and one was borderline rude) however the host stand is wonderful. Managements service was overbearing but I'm assuming they had a area director who was sat across from us (we had someone at our table checking on us a total of 11 times. For less than an hour visit. 3 different managers came over 2-3 times each lol it was actually slightly frustrating as that equates to someone checking on us once every 5 minuets or less. We couldn't even hold a conversation) BUT... the food was excellent. We came once before and the food was good but it was great on our last visit. I have been coming to this location for over one year now. It is one of my favorite restaurants in Porter Ranch. The food is 5/5 stars but, the service is 3 stars at best. I consistently have poor service on every visit for one year now. I have never had a rude server but they are not attentive. I was here for my anniversary last week. I am currently 36 weeks pregnant with gestational diabetes for which I have to drink a lot of water. My water was empty for at least 10 minutes and not only did my server not stop by during that time no one else passing by offered to refill my water. I ended up having to drink my husband's water and by the time my server noticed we were ready for the bill. Typically waiting for the bill is what by far takes the longest. You really have to be pro active in finding your server and asking for things you need. It's very disappointing that this is a consistent experience regardless of the who the server is. Maybe they are given too many tables? Just got into it knowing service will be very slow and not reliable. read more

As soon as we walked in the hostess was friendly and greeted us. We made reservations and I highly suggest it as it was busy on a Saturday night around 430. The inside was very nice but the lights throughout the time we were there dimmed in and out. Nice bar area with two big tvs. The menu had a pretty good selection of meat platters, sandwiches, apps, and salads. My favorite items of the night were the baby back ribs and brisket. Very tender, juicy and had a nice Smokey taste. I also suggest the homemade lemonade. The sides I got which were the mac and cheese and dirty rice were good but nothing special. He makes you feel comfortable because he is welcoming and sincere to what you order, and accommodates. The customer service from the hostess, management, bust boy, and bartender is very good service. Today I discovered they have happy hour Monday-Friday from 3:00-5:30 pm. It is such a well picked menu for options. It's really the best prices/menu I have seen in a while for happy hour, with good entrees, cocktails, beer, and wine. It's very worth it! I love the food and all the times it is really good and fresh. I love the menu options and variety. I always order the chicken meat combo where you can get the brick oven chicken with two meat options. I usually get pulled pork and brisket, which is extremely tender and delicious. The greens are so good that I always order double greens. They taste close to homemade collard greens my mom makes. The cornbread is usually good for a starter as well. I come here for breakfast on Saturday or a Sunday, and it's a really good menu for a bbq restaurant is soooo tasteful. I order the breakfast burrito and it melts in my mouth it's very good! Loved the service. Not only was our waitress attentive but the manger walked around checking in on the tables as well. The food was really good and came out quicker than most comparable restaurants. The only downfall of the night for me is the bar (I'm assuming) smoked a drank that caused the entire side of the restaurant we were sitting at to have a very strong incense kind of smell which became unpleasant after 5-10 minutes due to the strength and type of scent that didn't mix well in my option with the bbq smell. Loved this place! Our server was amazing, kind, sweet, and funny! He was informative about the menu and answered any questions we had. It was a bit busy since it was a Saturday so it did take him a little longer than usual to come around and check on us, which he acknowledged and apologized for which I think was so genuine and sweet! My partner got the two meats which came with two sides. He loves the dirty rice here so much that he got double servings of dirty rice! I got the chicken and waffles which is only available on Saturdays and Sundays. The spiced watermelon salad was delicious! The chicken was a big portion and it was juicy inside and nice and crunchy on the outside. The waffles were light and airy and even the butter was smooth and sweet. The Mac and cheese is perfect! We were there during happy hour and since it was our first time we decided to order a few plates to sample out. Pulled pork nachos: nice and toasty and very loaded. The meat is juicy and pulls apart easily. The guacamole on top is really creamy and delicious. Fried pickles: Best I've had. Sliced thick and the breading was seasoned and perfectly crunchy. Dipped in ranch and each bite was exquisite. Hot Tots: loaded with queso that honestly was kind of bland. What saved it is the seasoning and bacon bits. Rib sliders: Super tender meat and perfectly complemented by the coleslaw. Mini pulled pork sandwich with fries: Again their pulled pork is top tier. The fries that came with this were soooo good. Crunchy on the outside but nice and soft on the inside. Better than the tots! For dessert we got the brownie a la mode. Super rich brownie with vanilla bean ice cream. Tart cherry compote and a hefty amount of whipped cream. Perfect way to end the meal To drink we got classic margaritas with Tajín rim. Nothing special but tasted good. The kitchen was fast in getting our food out which is always appreciated when you're hungry. The bar was a little slow but maybe because it was happy hour and they were a bit busy. What really made our experience was our waitress Janet, she was AMAZING. Very attentive, friendly, answered all our questions and overall sweet. Only negative of the night is when the hostess (don't know her name) brought over our drinks and spilled a good amount of one when setting it down. We visited Gus' on Memorial Day towards the end of the night. It had been a rough day for us, and I just really wanted some good BBQ. Immediately, we found out they're out of brisket, which wasn't great, but it made sense because the place is absolutely packed! I shrugged and assumed I'd find something else that was good. The ambiance feels like a very bougie cafeteria, which for BBQ in California, it seems to fit. The crowd is friendly, definitely a nightlife vibe, but not so loud you can't have a conversation. We sadly found when we got to the table that they were out of a lot of their meats and I had to forego my rib craving. I figured it was my bad since I came in late on a holiday. Our waitress Reyna saw the sadness on my face, though, and I have to say she was a complete superstar!! To make us feel better, she was incredibly kind and patient, making suggestions of alternatives I might like. In the end, we had the deviled egg appetizer, brick bbq chicken, smoked sausage, garlic potatoes, Mac n cheese, braised greens, sweet tea, and cornbread. The food was all delicious, it's not diet by any means, but that's not what you want from comfort food, right? Large portions with enough for leftovers. They had the best greens I've tasted in a long time, and the meat came out the perfect temp and very juicy. My only sadness was that I wish the deviled eggs came in an even number, they were so good I felt bad stealing the last one from my bf. Definitely loved the seasoning in those eggs, it tastes like mesquite. In the end we had a great evening thanks to our waitress. She always had more tea for me despite how fast I went through it, and even sent me home with a to-go cup as it was the end of the night. I could not stand the food due to the overwhelming smoke flavor, I was never going back. Until now, it was a friend's Birthday and she wanted Gus's. So I knew I was not getting ribs, brisket, etc. I got their Smokehouse Chili, a side of Garlic Green beans and Tangy Cabbage. Well it was all fantastic. The Chili had the right amount of spice and the meat they put in it wasn't too smoky. If you like garlic, you will love the green beans. If you like blue cheese you will love the tangy cabbage. I will go back and try other items that wouldn't be smoked. I will definitely go back for the Chili. The service was average. The parking is a nightmare.
