I have been coming to Gus's BBQ for many years, and I have always enjoyed their food -- especially the gumbo. But today was extremely disappointing and honestly concerning. The gumbo I received was visibly greasy, far from the quality I've had in the past. I asked the staff to remake it, and even the second batch still looked the same. When I asked to see it before leaving, the employee barely wanted to show me the container, and the appearance still wasn't right. I was not about to bring that home to my mother -- especially knowing how heavy and unhealthy it looked. On top of that, the service was poor from the moment I walked in. No greeting. No assistance. I had to ask someone to help me. The food was packaged poorly, and no one seemed to care about the presentation or the condition of the meal. For a restaurant with a reputation like Gus's, that is unacceptable. When I requested a refund, the manager acted as if he didn't know how to process it. He stepped away without any apology or explanation and never returned. Another employee came over and issued the refund in seconds -- kindly and professionally. The contrast in their attitudes said everything. A manager should set the tone, not make a customer feel like they're a problem for pointing out obvious issues. Overall, this experience left a very bad impression. I'm grateful I got my refund, but the service, food quality, and lack of accountability from management were disappointing. I truly hope they improve, because customers deserve better -- and this is not the Gus's BBQ I've known over the years. read more

The very worst customer service from management. I live nearby and ordered to go from here several times. Memorial day weekend they got my to go order wrong twice. They apologized and fixed it. Cool. Recently I ordered medium rare steak and eggs with cheese to go, which I ordered before without a problem. I received well done steak and eggs with no cheese. When I went back to have the order corrected, rather than apologize, the manager came out and told me that "breakfast to go orders are optional." She then claimed that meat often overcooks when put in to go containers. Huh??? A barbeque place has issue with meat in to go orders? When I told her I ordered the exact same order without issue from them several times in the past, I just got a blank stare. When I asked about them forgetting the cheese, I got a blank stare. She just reiterated that to go orders for breakfast was optional - like i was lucky to have them serve me and should be ok with them getting my order wrong. Keep in mind that I have ordered to go meat (steak, chicken, brisket, etc.) from them several time before and no one ever said "to go is optional." No one said "to go breakfast is optional" when I walked in to place my order. No one said "to go is optional" when they asked for my money. I really wanted to like this place because I love a good bbq and this place usually looks pretty busy on a weekend so its got to be pretty good, no? The atmosphere of the place is pretty lively and Gus's makes a great place to come with a large group of friends looking to hang out in a cookout atmosphere. Now to the negatives with some of the food. My dad and I shared the BBQ quesadilla and I had the picnic platter with baby back ribs, fried chicken and pulled pork and my dad ordered the Texas Prime beef brisket sandwich. The bbq quesadilla was pretty tasty. I would definitely get this again. The prime beef brisket in the sandwich was dry and I think the kitchen was trying to hide this by generously slathering it in bbq sauce. Were they having an off day or because we were eating an early dinner around 5pm, the kitchen was sending out meat that was left over from lunch time so it was sitting under a heat lamp? The baby back ribs were pretty good but the pulled pork was a bit bland and I couldn't really taste the "signature rub" they claimed to use and the fried chicken looked good(it was recommended by Timm) but when you took a bite, it tasted like it was cooked in oil that was going bad.
