Loved this sushi spot near work. We came here for dinner and the place was located in a pretty busy shopping complex. The decor was modern and sleek. The booths were very comfortable. The sushi bar was located in a separate room that had glass walls. You could see into it but not hear so much of the noise so that was nice. It also made it seem like you were having a private sushi tasting experience at the bar without all the hubbub going on at the dining room. The server was very kind and patient. He gave us suggestions on how to maximize our order and still have a little taste of everything we wanted. At first we were both going to order the sashimi omakases but our server recommended for us to order one sashimi omakase and one premium chirashi don. It was perfect! Me and my husband love going to gurume and have made all of our family in the area think it is a must stop. Their fish is all so fresh and delicious. We love the DIY handroll kit, the omakases and all of the plates are great food and a good price. It can be a little expensive but well worth the price in our opinion. If you are looking to splurge you have to get the bluefin tuna, uni, and caviar handroll it is so decadent and delicious and honestly I'm sorry once you have it because you will have to keep getting them they are that good. read more

The food was tasty, fish was very fresh and the Japanese ceviche was really good too! The menu was interesting and had good portions of everything. Nice big cuts of fish and big rolls. The ambiance is perfect for a lowkey dinner date or celebration. Didn't get to sit at the sushi bar, but it looked really cool and would definitely try getting a seat there if possible next time we visit. Only reason I dinged them one star was because our server left us waiting for a good while before we got our check and forgot my water after I asked for one. This is really tough to give Gurume a 1 star. I've been coming here regularly (at least once or twice a month) for the past almost three years since they first opened. This was my favorite sushi spot in Irvine for almost three years. My go to has always been the OMG roll, crunch roll, truffle fries and spicy edameme or the Omakase. Sadly, that has changed. It's always been a five start Last night, unfortunately, it gave my wife a bad stomach upset and ache. They said they changed their supplier for fish to a new supplier in Santa Barbara so I am thinking that had to do it with it. Hopefully, they can switch back to their previous supplier. read more

I found this piece of crab shell in my sushi tonight after grabbing dinner to go from this restaurant. I understand they are new so my girlfriend and I decided to try the place. We walked in and ordered food to go, came back and grabbed it. We went home and started to eat the 2 ultimate salmon rolls. As we start chewing the food the crab meat had some odd crunchiness to the roll that didn't make sense. She said she felt something hard, i didn't believe her at first.. But then after chewing thoroughly I ended up finding crab shell pieces too. I felt like I was about to chip my tooth. We get to searching and realized that canned crab meat has to be peeled off the shell. And this piece looks like a piece of shell that happens to be in the crab meat section of your sushi. Be warned! Sushi was good, but those hard pieces that could break your teeth just aren't worth it. With the crab meat out of the rolls they were really yummy read more

Our table enjoyed the miso black cod and hamachi collar teishoku sets as the portions were generous, the quality good, and overall looks and side dishes very well put together. I ordered the suki yaki hot pot/udon, which tasted fine, though the beef on top was marinated too heavily(tasted like korean bulgogi). My main issue was with the service. the service was quite all over the place. An entree was served before appetizers were finished being brought out, staff barely came to clear our plates. I had to ask throughout dinner for basic things like water, checks, to go boxes. Server did not check on us throughout our dinner until after the bill was paid. They did not appear to be short staffed either. My cousin ordered their omakase sushi and sashimi set($90) and the server just brought it to the table and set it down, with no explanation of what fish she was being served. So it was a guessing game for her as she eats. I would come back for their teishoku sets, but will lower my expectations for service next time. read more

We are so blessed to have such a great sushi place in our neighborhood. We came here twice now as a family, and both times we were greeted right away and seated. The restaurant is decorated in a modern style, and the ambiance is calming. We ordered a wide variety of dishes from udon to sashimi and the food was so good. This is the best Japanese restaurant in Irvine for the price. There is one restaurant that is better but much much more expensive. The quality is very very good. I went there for lunch on Jan 24 my friends and I had a wide range of food. Appetizers, sushi, rolls, and lunch bento boxes. Because of health reasons this is the first really good meal I have had in a long time. This a place you could spend a couple of hours trying different dishes and drinks. This place is not cheap but is not really expensive. The amount food they give you for each dish is very good. So for the price I think this restaurant is a very good deal. First time trying this spot and it was amazing! It's a bit in the pricier side about an average of $17-20 per roll but the portions are large and the fish was fresh. I tried the mango roll, Philly roll (off-menu), crunch roll, tiger roll, and the seafood udon. Everything was so filling & fresh~ :) Beyond that though, my server went above and beyond. ASK FOR THE SERVER NAMED JOHNNY, HE DESERVES A BIG TIP!! He had such amazing energy & was so positive. I sometimes get anxiety while ordering meals especially if I want something to accommodate to my dietary restrictions but he made it so comfortable to converse.
