Jinbei Assorted Tempura
Katrina V.

When I walked in I felt like I wasn't in OC as the decor had an izakaya feel as if you're in Japan. We sat at the bar and was able to order right away with the sushi chef. My daughter enjoyed the salmon roll variety. There's no omakase but they had a great selection of fish. The tempura was perfectly made. Not greasy and lightly battered with a perfect crunch. Will be back to try other dishes

Chirashi

11.6.2025 dinner It has been awhile since coming back to Jinbei especially since we no longer live in the area. Came here on a weekday with the kids for a family dinner. The service was great and the food was quite delicious! Everyone was welcoming and it was the same cozy local restaurant feel as I remembered. The chirashi bowl was beautifully prepared as was the sushi platter. These were both the same price and they were equally delicious - truly a matter of preference. The fish was fresh and well prepared. The kids enjoyed their udon, assorted tempura and rolls. Everything was delicious. So glad we came back! Will definitely be making more visits.

Tempura and sashimi combo

Came here for lunch from San Diego. I had the tempura and sashimi lunch combo and my husband had the eel bowl. We also had the takoyaki. Tempura was delicious and light. Sashimi was fresh. Hubby enjoyed his eel bowl with the pickles and plum. Takoyaki had generous chunks of octopus and was nice and crunchy. Would come back when we are in the area. Customer service was great!

We always request to eat at the counter with Sushi Chef Burton! He's our favorite chef because he consistently makes the most delicious sushi, and is fun to talk to. Last night we brought new friends to try it with us, and they loved it, too!

Tiffany C.

You can't go wrong with omakase at the sushi bar with Burton! He is amazing and makes an awesome variety of fresh and high quality sushi! This time we also got a bottle of sake, and it was perfectly chilled and so refreshing. We always have such a wonderful experience here.

Honestly, this place is so good and conveniently located close to where I live! I love how it has been newly renovated, the interior is a lot more authentic than before, service could have a bit more improvement in terms of pace, but it definitely has improved before the renovation took pace. Now the food. I actually really like the food here! I would say this place is an upscale casual place to have lunch or dinner. My family and friends always enjoy having meals here so I'm sure you will too :)! One thing is, I wish they had more selections on their menu! But the food here is very good :)

Sushi lunch

I came here on a Saturday for lunch with my mom and my dear friend to celebrate her entry into med school + her bday. It was my first time here, and luckily there was no wait. We were promptly served the hot tea and water we requested, and the food we ordered also came out very quickly. The presentation and amount of food we ordered was great for the quality and price. The unagi don was really delicious, and the little bit of salmon I had from my mom's chirashi set was also fresh and yummy. I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for a bite of Japanese cuisine in Irvine. I was surprised there was such a hidden gem in this plaza. I want to try coming back for their dinner menu as well sometime!

Our friends raved about the sushi bowl from here so we came to check it out. We also got the uni pasta ehivh we saw other tables ordering. The uni pasta was creamy but the uni was a bit small and wish we got a bigger portion of the uni. The sushi bowl taste fresh but it also included a lot of fish that i personally dont really eat like the squid, tomago, shrimp, and other seafood. I did really like the salmon and tuna and yellowtail , they were fatty and fresh. But our friend did earn us that we have to go right when they open because they only offer a limited amount of bowls a day. When we got there, there was a short line already.

Great sushi spot The fish is incredibly fresh, the presentation is beautiful. A great place to enjoy quality sushi

uni pasta

This used to be my favorite go to spot in Irvine and after my recent visit I probably wouldn't return...this place definitely decreased in quality but heavily raised their prices. I've always loved their uni pasta and get it everytime but now I see it's almost $30 when it used to be around $22-23. But since this place is so good, I didn't mind paying the price. However, it was extremely disappointing to see that the pasta was very dried out and it had barely any sauce to go with it. Do not get this dish unless you want to waste your money. Another point was the service. Now I knew the service is always a bit slow but especially today we only ordered 2 dishes one for me and my friend. My friends order didn't come out until 30 minutes after I got my pasta. Even then it was hard to grab our server as well because this place is very busy but too understaffed. This place used to be a quality restaurant I used to frequent but I'm sad that this has dropped to a 2 star rating in my eyes.

Uni spaghetti
Robyn L.

Visited Jinbei to catch up with a mentee on a Thursday night. No wait, although the restaurant was busy and I can imagine how packed it gets! Everything was delicious, we got the uni spaghetti, the salmon skin salad. Yellowtail nigiri, and a spicy tuna roll. The uni spaghetti was a delicious umami filled bowl of pasta, definitely recommend! Overall, nice spot for a dinner or catchup.

Lunch special "sushi lunch" is so yummy and the perfect portion size. Fast service and cozy ambiance at the sushi bar. Fresh wasabi and hot green tea so good!

Just re-opened. Bright, cozy and new menu. I had the tempura and new style Kobore sushi (means overflowing of goodness) Check it out! Cheers.

We've sat at the sushi bar and it was cool watching the sushi chefs assemble rolls and nigiri. The tables offer more space for food and the patio has heat lamps so seating outside isn't an issue. There's small private rooms for larger parties that looked great. I'm not a big omakase/nigiri fan so I stick to the rolls and appetizers but my friend frequently orders the raw fish. My go-tos are either the Fresh Roll (if I want something lighter) or the Rainbow Roll. For appetizers, the tuna pringles are good but a bit pricey. The only dish I've tried and wasn't a big fan of is the Japanese Rib-Eye Steak Tobanyaki (sauce was too sweet and the steak was a little overcooked). Service is always pleasant. This last visit, our waitress (unfortunately I forgot her name!) was particularly awesome. When my friend asked her about the 6 piece omakase, she admitted that she normally doesn't recommend that people order it because of the portion size. We appreciated her honesty and her recommendations. We decided to try the pork belly kushiyaki per her suggestion (it was delicious) and my friend went with the 8 piece omakase (it ended up being the perfect amount). The food came out at a nice pace though there was a bit of a wait for the omakase (we were told ahead of time that it would be around a 20 minute wait). Everything tasted great and the waitress even threw in a free matcha cake dessert since "she was feeling nice." I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a nice dinner and fresh, high quality sushi. This was my third visit and I'll continue to support this establishment. I'll have to be more strategic to make sure I'm hungry enough to order their hot pot rice bowls next!

Today we went there not knowing of the change. The food is now certainly "all you can eat" quality. We opted against the all you can eat limited menu, and ordered of the regular menu but the quality was terrible: 1. The toro nigri was chewy, very thinly cut, with a very small piece of rice. 2. We could not tell the difference between regular salmon and the salmon belly nigri they brought us. It looked and tasted exactly the same. Definitely not fatty salmon belly. 3. The yellow tail belly was chewy. 4. All the fish in their nigri sushi were thinly cut with very little rice. Definitely all you can eat amount of fish. 5. The rolls were small and for some reason all tasted the same with little flavor. If you like all you can eat sushi places which always offer low quality fish, you might like this place. We will miss sushi Imari and the great quality sushi they served.

I doubt every single table who left 1-2 pieces got charged so we felt like it was unfair. Mind you it was $2-3 per piece not eaten. FOOD: 3/5. The only fish that were worth getting and delicious were the salmon and yellowtail. The tuna tasted terrible and had a sour after taste and the fish to rice ratio was terrible. I really enjoyed our date night at this sushi restaurant! Overall I felt like the sushi was…read morehigh-quality and had a lot of unique flavors that kept things fresh and exciting. You won't find your typical rainbow rolls at this restaurant (I do love a good rainbow roll though). The rolls we ordered were the Snowflake (which was flavored with yuzu), the Lobster roll (which was so much more than a typical baked lobster/langostino roll), and the Are You Kidding Me roll, which was big on truffle flavor and came topped with fried onions. I thoroughly enjoyed the Snowflake roll. It had multiple types of fish inside, and the yuzu flavor added the perfect fresh citrusy touch. It also came dotted with a tiny bit of sriracha (or some other spice) but it was just a hint and it's easy to wipe off if you don't want any spice. The Lobster roll was the star of the show. I give it a 10/10 for presentation, and it was also the best tasting one in my opinion. It was plated with a shelled lobster tail, which looks visually pleasing, but the most impressive part was right before serving, the waitress lit it on fire and handed it to us, as if it were flaming creme brulee or something. The flame actually wasn't on the roll itself, but was on what appeared to be a trail of salt (presumably soaked in some kind of alcohol to make it burn). It definitely was a cool effect and I've never seen anything like it in a sushi restaurant! Lastly, the Are You Kidding Me roll - this was my third favorite out of the three we ordered. It was pretty good but I think the truffle flavor was a bit strong. I'm also personally not a huge fan of fried onions on top of sushi since I think it clashes a bit with the freshness of the fish, and gives me too many bar food vibes. But it certainly was flavorful and my husband and I still finished it. We shared these three sushi rolls between the two of us and it was just the right amount of food to leave feeling full. Besides the food, the restaurant itself was nice although I'm not sure they really needed to have a live DJ there as opposed to having a Spotify Playlist. Didn't bother me but I don't think it really added much to the vibe. I would definitely eat here again!

We started with the spicy tuna crispy rice and avocado crispy rice, both of which were incredible. Each dish had its own distinct flavor, with a really nice balance of acidity, sweetness, and savoriness. We also tried a range of different rolls, and every single one felt thoughtfully crafted and unique. The ambiance adds to the experience. The space is open, well-decorated, and has plenty of seating, making it great for a night out. It does get busy during dinner hours, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation ahead of time. Parking is fairly convenient with a nearby structure, which is always a plus. Service was excellent as well. The staff was attentive, efficient, and made sure everything flowed smoothly throughout the meal. Drinks were another highlight. The Pretty in Pink and the Yuzu Drop were both a hit at our table. Overall, this is a great spot for a fun night out with high-quality sushi, great drinks, and an inviting atmosphere. Definitely a place I'd come back to.
