Jinbei Assorted Tempura
Katrina V.

When I walked in I felt like I wasn't in OC as the decor had an izakaya feel as if you're in Japan. We sat at the bar and was able to order right away with the sushi chef. My daughter enjoyed the salmon roll variety. There's no omakase but they had a great selection of fish. The tempura was perfectly made. Not greasy and lightly battered with a perfect crunch. Will be back to try other dishes

11.6.2025 dinner It has been awhile since coming back to Jinbei especially since we no longer live in the area. Came here on a weekday with the kids for a family dinner. The service was great and the food was quite delicious! Everyone was welcoming and it was the same cozy local restaurant feel as I remembered. The chirashi bowl was beautifully prepared as was the sushi platter. These were both the same price and they were equally delicious - truly a matter of preference. The fish was fresh and well prepared. The kids enjoyed their udon, assorted tempura and rolls. Everything was delicious. So glad we came back! Will definitely be making more visits.

We always request to eat at the counter with Sushi Chef Burton! He's our favorite chef because he consistently makes the most delicious sushi, and is fun to talk to. Last night we brought new friends to try it with us, and they loved it, too!

Having an awesome time at Jinbei
Sakurako ..

Honestly, this place is so good and conveniently located close to where I live! I love how it has been newly renovated, the interior is a lot more authentic than before, service could have a bit more improvement in terms of pace, but it definitely has improved before the renovation took pace. Now the food. I actually really like the food here! I would say this place is an upscale casual place to have lunch or dinner. My family and friends always enjoy having meals here so I'm sure you will too :)! One thing is, I wish they had more selections on their menu! But the food here is very good :)

You can't go wrong with omakase at the sushi bar with Burton! He is amazing and makes an awesome variety of fresh and high quality sushi! This time we also got a bottle of sake, and it was perfectly chilled and so refreshing. We always have such a wonderful experience here.

Sushi lunch

I came here on a Saturday for lunch with my mom and my dear friend to celebrate her entry into med school + her bday. It was my first time here, and luckily there was no wait. We were promptly served the hot tea and water we requested, and the food we ordered also came out very quickly. The presentation and amount of food we ordered was great for the quality and price. The unagi don was really delicious, and the little bit of salmon I had from my mom's chirashi set was also fresh and yummy. I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for a bite of Japanese cuisine in Irvine. I was surprised there was such a hidden gem in this plaza. I want to try coming back for their dinner menu as well sometime!

Our friends raved about the sushi bowl from here so we came to check it out. We also got the uni pasta ehivh we saw other tables ordering. The uni pasta was creamy but the uni was a bit small and wish we got a bigger portion of the uni. The sushi bowl taste fresh but it also included a lot of fish that i personally dont really eat like the squid, tomago, shrimp, and other seafood. I did really like the salmon and tuna and yellowtail , they were fatty and fresh. But our friend did earn us that we have to go right when they open because they only offer a limited amount of bowls a day. When we got there, there was a short line already.

Great sushi spot The fish is incredibly fresh, the presentation is beautiful. A great place to enjoy quality sushi

uni pasta

This used to be my favorite go to spot in Irvine and after my recent visit I probably wouldn't return...this place definitely decreased in quality but heavily raised their prices. I've always loved their uni pasta and get it everytime but now I see it's almost $30 when it used to be around $22-23. But since this place is so good, I didn't mind paying the price. However, it was extremely disappointing to see that the pasta was very dried out and it had barely any sauce to go with it. Do not get this dish unless you want to waste your money. Another point was the service. Now I knew the service is always a bit slow but especially today we only ordered 2 dishes one for me and my friend. My friends order didn't come out until 30 minutes after I got my pasta. Even then it was hard to grab our server as well because this place is very busy but too understaffed. This place used to be a quality restaurant I used to frequent but I'm sad that this has dropped to a 2 star rating in my eyes.

Uni spaghetti
Robyn L.

Visited Jinbei to catch up with a mentee on a Thursday night. No wait, although the restaurant was busy and I can imagine how packed it gets! Everything was delicious, we got the uni spaghetti, the salmon skin salad. Yellowtail nigiri, and a spicy tuna roll. The uni spaghetti was a delicious umami filled bowl of pasta, definitely recommend! Overall, nice spot for a dinner or catchup.

Tempura and sashimi combo

Came here for lunch from San Diego. I had the tempura and sashimi lunch combo and my husband had the eel bowl. We also had the takoyaki. Tempura was delicious and light. Sashimi was fresh. Hubby enjoyed his eel bowl with the pickles and plum. Takoyaki had generous chunks of octopus and was nice and crunchy. Would come back when we are in the area. Customer service was great!

Haley C.

this place is always great if you want quality sushi. I'll have to admit, its a bit pricey with each specialty roll being nearly $20, but 1 roll is enough for you to walk out satiated. the staff are also very friendly and attentive, and constantly checking up on your party to make sure you're enjoying your meal there.

Any alternate phone numbers? The one online is always busy. I feel like they're likely to lose business this way.

Depends on what time you called. Hopefully during their posted business hours.

Are you open today?

Yes. Take out orders. Think they are closed from 2-5pm tho. Open for lunch and dinner from 5pm.

Is Jinbei open for pick up or curb side service during this COVID19 shelter at home time? Has anyone ordered from them?

You should call them to ask and confirm. Here's something to watch as well.…

Is Chirashi available during weekend lunch?

Is omakase available during lunch?

This restaurant does not serve omakase.

How does this place compare to oshima in orange?

Completely different! Oshima is delicious, but darker ambiance and great for Omakase! Both places are delish! Just wayyyy diff! Similar prices tho! Oshima is Omakase only at sushi bar, but you can add other items like I do.

Do they sell Uni spaghetti during lunch time?

We've been here plenty of times, and the food has always been incredibly consistent. What really makes their katsu stand out to me is how thin and crispy it is without sacrificing the flavor. I personally prefer thinner katsu, and Hako does it SO well. My go-to is the Curry Tonkatsu. The curry itself is amazing too, with mild and spicy options. Even the spicy isn't particularly hot, so I would recommend that one if you just want a little kick. They're almost always busy, so unless you come during an off time, I'd expect at least a little bit of a wait. Considering how good the food is, I completely understand why, and I'm willing to wait every time. If you don't want to wait for a table, their takeout is a great option too and everything comes neatly packed in its own little box. Still not a problem, as we just joined the wait list and it was accurate down to the minute. It's a small place that is one big sushi bar. You can watch as most of your food is made in front of you. There's a reason why the crispy rice appetizer is repeatedly mentioned by other diners - it is really good. The salmon appetizer and cucumber salad were also worth it. Dont skip the fries. The hand rolls come out pretty quickly and at a decent pace that keeps the seaweed crispy. We ordered the salmon, salmon crunch, spicy tuna, crab and california rolls - all were delicious. It was surprising to us how full we were, because it feels like when we go to a regular sushi spot we eat so much more. The yuzu drink (non alcoholic) was refreshing and if you're just having water, they'll keep the glass full. We noticed the family next to us had two "Kei concepts" boxes that look almost like happy meal boxes. They said it's the kids meal that has chicken nuggets, fries and apple juice for only $8. Not a bad option, if your kiddo isnt into sushi yet.

To be honest, up until the exact moment we sat down, we actually had no idea that Waka Sakura was a…read moreconveyor belt sushi spot. For us, just how bright and modern it looks was enough to pique our curiosity, so, it was definitely unexpected to almost immediately see a "train" shoot right past us. Not that we minded, as conveyor belt sushi spots are a bit of a guilty pleasure, but it also didn't hurt that the food we saw go by us from the kitchen looked great! While conveyor belt sushi spots (somewhat deservedly) aren't known for having high quality sushi, Waka Sakura isn't like most of the ones I've been to. For one, it looks a whole lot nicer, but also, they don't have a loop that circles their sushi around endlessly. Instead, you order through your table's tablet and it gets delivered via "trains" on said belt, so it's more made-to-order. What's more, both the quality of their sushi and their menu are pretty impressive, as they have a wide variety of sashimi, nigiri, rolls, cooked items, sides, and salads to choose from. Plus, it goes beyond just the basics, too, with offerings like wagyu nigiri, clam miso soup, and mehikari karaage. -- CHAWANMUSHI Not quite as loaded as I would've liked, but still better than others I've had. While it may have been a little light on seafood, the custard was silky smooth. -- SPICY GARLIC EDAMAME So much better than regular edamame! I loved the spicy garlic on this and how well the edamame was cooked (still had just a slight bite). -- SALMON SKIN HAND ROLL This was pretty straightforward, but no less impressive! The hand roll was fairly packed and the salmon skin itself was equally crispy and oh so tasty. -- SPICY TUNA HAND ROLL I'm not big on spicy tuna, but this wasn't too shabby. The tuna wasn't overly mashed up and you could actually taste it, instead of just getting a mouthful of spice. -- TAKOYAKI Pretty standard, but not necessarily in a bad way. Although the pieces of octopus weren't very big, they weren't tiny either and I liked how the dough was crispy on the outside yet not too wet/soggy on the inside. -- FRIED SALMON BELLY I was worried when I saw "fried", but this was delicious! Each piece of salmon was meaty, moist, and just slightly fatty. Plus, it wasn't at all greasy. So good! -- SEARED SCALLOP NIGIRI WITH TERIYAKI Of all of the nigiri we had, my gf enjoyed this one the most. The teriyaki sauce added a nice sweetness that contrasted nicely against the slight char on the scallop. -- WAGYU BEEF TRIO - Teriyaki, Onion Mayo, Salt Sauce I don't often get wagyu sushi, but this was terrific! All three types were juicy and flavorful, but I liked the Onion Mayo the best with the Salt Sauce a close second. -- SALMON PARTY COMBO - Fresh Salmon, With Salmon Roe, Onion Mayo, Seared, Teriyaki, Spicy Mayo My favorite of all of the nigiri combos we had. Across every type (half were raw, half were seared), the cuts were all thick and flavorful, but I especially liked the Seared, Onion Mayo, and the one with Roe. -- SCALLOP LOVERS COMBO - Fresh Scallop, Seared, Teriyaki, Spicy Mayo I love scallops, so all of these were great, but I actually thought the plain one was the best followed by the seared one. Regardless, each of the cuts were fresh, sweet, and decently meaty. -- TUNA (BLUEFIN) LOVERS COMBO - Medium Fatty, Fresh Tuna, Seared Tuna, Tuna Tataki This may have been a last second add, but it was no less delicious! All four pieces were awesome, but I loved the Chutoro (medium fatty) and the tataki the most. In addition to how much we enjoyed everything we had, the thing that surprised us most was how reasonable Waka Sakura's prices felt for what you get. While the quality you'd get at a legit sushi restaurant is still likely to be better, what you get here is nothing to scoff at, as it's better than your average, generic neighborhood spot, let alone lesser conveyor belt joints, like Kura Revolving Sushi. Plus, their sushi rice is so good! Flavorful and cooked really well. Although conveyor belt sushi joints are undoubtedly just as much of a novelty as they are sushi restaurants, it's awesome how you can get the best of both worlds at Waka Sakura. On top of all of that, the line for a table here isn't nearly as long as at the likes of Kura. I just hope the masses don't find out, though some would be okay just to make sure this place sticks around!
