I saw this randomly on my Google Map and decided to give it a try, not disappointed at all. It was a self serving place. They have a station for water and utensils. A place to retrieve food and another counter to return plates. We ordered pad See Ew noodle non spicy for our kid and drunken noodle for the adults and mango sticky rice. With all of the local influencer hype when they first opened, I was expecting some delicious Thai food... Do influencers actually not give their honest review? I love the atmosphere and the touch screen ordering. Which is great, then it comes to their broken food delivery process. Each dish, appetizer, and drink arrives one by one at the counter... we ordered over 5 items total. That means that the staff literally screamed our name and asked us to get up 5 times. Could they just hold items at the counter and call us up twice? Nooooo... We were the only customers here on a Friday night, which should have been a sign. The most expensive dish we ordered was $28, which was rubbery, reheated chicken with papaya salad. I've had this dish many times at other restaurants and this version was not fresh. Some employees sat across from us on their computers and just stared the entire time, made me uncomfortable af. Maybe I was there on an off day? Do yourself a favor and across the street to Talay for more authentic flavor at the same price and you don't have to lift a finger. Before going in, I knew by the internet pictures that it wasn't fancy and that's fine. We walk in and choose our table. We realized that we need to go back to the front and order from the screen ourselves. No substitutes or changing anything. Then we needed to pickup our utensils, plates, and water cups. Then go back to the counter to pickup our food when announced. For the quantity given, they should lower the price. We spent $82 for 4 things. And kids were not a fan of it. After the meal, we had to take all the plates and utensils to the cleaning area where we had to scrap off the plates and place everything in their correct bins. They should've just put a dishwasher out there for us the load. We won't be going back, sorry but Talay still has our heart. read more

WHOA!! Gu Thai is a newly established restaurant located right across the ASSI plaza in suwanee/duluth. The interior is so pretty with wooden tables, clean polished concrete floor and very well placed decor. They serve so much yummy food here and every single one of their menu items is a must try! Each dish is savory, bright, and rich. Their average price range is about $17-20 per person, but their portions WELLLLLL makes up for it. I eat a lot and the pad thai filled me up, pause. Side note, their food isn't really spicy but you can always ask a server for some chili flakes and chili paste!! This place is also a self-order (no tipping) and self seating as well. However the server will call your name whenever your order is ready!! If you're in the area, give Gu Thai a try! I heard their lunch prices is much more appealing too. read more

A nice option Thai food in this area. Being Thai, I'm always excited to check out Thai restaurants. It's definitely tasty and authentic enough. I didn't care for the type of noodles "ramen" they used in the barbecue noodle dish, but the pork and accompanying sauce was super delicious. They should probably make it a rice dish "khao moo dang" and it would be better. My husband loved his basil chicken dish and my son enjoyed the garlic chicken. I'm taking off one star as they forgot the appetizers and it came out mid way through our meal, and lack of to go containers. It's a self serve style place which is smart and the woman at the counter was friendly and welcomed feedback. I hope they will be successful! read more

Great Thai food. Self ordering kiosk though so that might throw you off initially but no tipping required due to that. Favs: Coconut soup, pad Thai, spicy basil fried rice, and mango and coconut rice. Definitely worth checking out! Edit: Went back the next day. I'm all about trying new places and still trying to find the best Thai restaurant in the area. Thai of Norcross went down after their relocation. Was so excited when Gu Thai's videos started going up all over social medias by different Influencers. They were right down the street from me. First of, parking sucks. Good luck trying to find parking in this mix use complex. Cars were parked all on the grass. Luckily, I found a parking, but the big tractor trailer that came after me almost blocked me in. The front door was kind of tricky when walking from the right. It looks to be split for Gu Thai in the left and a Japanese restaurant in the right, both openings covered by a curtain. Looks like all the people behind me went through the same door too when there's a closer door that leads directly into the restaurant. Ordering was kind of tricky. I realized that everything I see on the wall was not on my ordering screen bc I had to press the next page. It wasn't that obvious. Prices were not that decent either. Expect to pay at least $15+. Papaya Salad+Chicken was already $28. The scanner for payment was kind of confusing, but I succeeded. I feel bad for those that are not into technology. There was no way my parents would know what to order or do here. Foods-wise, I'm sorry to say I was really disappointed. I was going this restaurant would be my backup foods on days that I'm too tired to cook. Nam Khao was very salty, Basil Fried Rice was not good at all. I literally had 1-2 basil leaves in it and it had a smokey taste to it. Papaya Salad tasted more of a vinaigrette taste to it than unami. Only the chicken that came with it was decent. My experience at Gu Thai was fantastic! They offer free parking, although spaces are limited, so it can be a bit tricky to find a spot. The self-service setup is a nice touch since it means no need to worry about tipping (which is a bonus if you're a big spender like me). The Thai tea was a 7.5/10--delicious and full of flavor, though it was a bit too sugary for my liking. I did love the bottle it came in, though, since I could keep it! The chicken pad Thai, on the other hand, was a solid 10/10. The flavor was amazing, and the portion was huge. Instead of the usual peanut taste, it had a unique blend of sweetness and spice that was a nice change from what I'm used to. Moving into their pork dumplings, this was a 10/10. The best pork dumplings I've ever had, the dumpling itself was infused with seasoning so you didn't even need sauce! I've never had a dumpling made like this so it was extremely unexpected. However, if you're a wimp with spicy foods I would NOT recommend this dish since it is very spicy. read more

The atmosphere is very very nice! It gives off coffee shop/cafe vibes. They have music playing but it's not too loud or overbearing. We ordered appetizers: Fried tofu 6/10 it had no flavor but the texture was nice. The sauce made it better. Crab ragoons 10/10. Curry Puff Chicken 10/10 the pastry was so soft and flaky and the meat had really good flavor. Takoyaki 6/10 it was a little too fishy for me and it needed a sauce. I loved the Thai tea! Gu Thai's self-service model is actually a great concept--quick, efficient, and no need to worry about tipping. The restaurant is nice and clean, making for a comfortable dining experience. We ordered a variety of dishes, and the shrimp Pad Thai was easily the standout--absolutely delicious and a must-try! I've visited this restaurant twice during lunch and noticed a concerning pattern. Most items on the lunch menu are marked as "sold out," except for the ginger chicken, yet those same dishes are available on the dinner menu at nearly double the price. This doesn't make sense--if the ingredients are available during lunch hours, customers shouldn't be forced to pay dinner prices. Overall, it felt misleading and disappointing. Went back for 2nd visit, this time we are dining in. Ordered: 1. PadThai: very good flavor, better than many other Thai restaurants. 2. Massaman Chicken Curry: creamy & full of flavor. 3. Pork Shumai: it's just ok. The skin is thin & silky though. 4. Thai Tea: just as good as last time. Very consistent. Love the fact it's using crushed ice. Will be our go-to for Thai tea from now on! Place was busy. Love the upbeat ambiance with lots of sun light coming in. Owners/staffs were friendly and helpful. No tipping is expected here since it is a self served place. I was so excited a new thai restaurant was opening in the area with hopes of finally getting some good Thai food closer to home and not have to drive into the city. Unfortunately, this place did not hit the mark. When you first walk in, you place your order using a kiosk. My usual go-to dishes when I first try a new thai restaurant are Pad Thai and Pad Kee Mow. My husband ordered pad thai. Not bad, I would come here again if I was really craving thai food and didn't want to drive into the city. However, I did not order the pad kee mow because the menu description stated it consisted of spaghetti noodles instead of wide rice noodles. What I did try was the green curry lunch special. I know it was lunch and not dinner, but the portion was shockingly small. The taste was decent, but I felt like they were skimping out on ingredients. read more

Thai places are few and far between and possibly the only other joint to get mediocre Thai style dishes without breaking the bank per se is probably Tin Drum, the Panda Express style joint but with Southeast Asian influences. But when the place caters to the western palette, it becomes a bit off putting and Gu Thai, while they just opened, might need to reconsider their cooking methods. It's a self-serve place where you order off a kiosk, which seems to be the trend of these newer style places so it's nothing to rave home about. So there is no real service. The interior is rather small. Seats roughly 40-60 people but it is well lit and serves as a decent date spot or a family joint. Now for the food. I ordered the Beef Penang and the Pad Thai. The penang wasn't a curry at all. It was more like a Penang soup or a Penang broth as curry usually is thick enough to cling to the rice. Most Thai or Malay curry I've seen might be thinner than Indian or even Japanese curry but it still clings to the rice and doesn't run off the way Gu Thai's penang did. Nothing stuck and the curry was more of a side soup than an actual entree, at least that's how it seemed like it was presented. The rice was fragrant and flavorful with the correct spices. And the penang "curry" itself was flavorful to a degree but there wasn't any balance of flavors. It was savory with a very VERY light spice that made it an accent to the dish and didn't seem like it was incorporated evenly across the board. There should've been the evenly dispersed weaving of the spices, the kaffir lime, the coconut cream, and the beef giving this beautiful dance of flavors but this was not that. It felt like MSG was tossed in and nothing was evenly cooked. And for it to come out like a side soup instead of the main entree was odd to me. The ever basic westerner choice for Thai food, the Pad Thai also was very imbalanced in its flavor profile. The noodles were too sticky and there was an overpowering sweetness that made the whole dish off putting to say the least. There should've been a balance of flavors but there was not. It was just too sweet with sticky noodles and again, it might be to cater to the western palette but this was also a bit disappointing. All in all, this might be a new Thai place but it is far from anything remotely Thai. One might consider this place a boujee-ier Tin Drum and that's not something to write home about. With the entrees valuing at $16 or so, might be an expensive lunch or dinner option that does not deliver in terms of good Thai food. If the desire is to cater to the western palette, then go on. But if authenticity is the name of the game then a change will need to be made in how Gu Thai cooks their dishes. read more

There are many other places around that are a much better value, such as kitchen 21. Very impersonal experience. Order from a computer screen at the door, then pick up at counter. Maybe my fault because I didn't realize it was a quick service restaurant. There's a kiosk that you order and pay at, which was fine. The ambiance is nice. I ordered spring rolls ($7) and they came out cold. Not warm even just cold and had very little flavor. Definitely not worth the price. I also got panang curry, which is usually my favorite. The only option was beef, which I don't usually love. There was not a lot of meat and the beef was extremely chewy. I would have preferred to get chicken or vegetarian but there was no option to change the protein. The flavor of the curry itself was pretty good, but overall I am not very impressed with the food. Everything was very expensive, and I probably will get Thai somewhere else in the future. read more

@gu_thai_duluth recently opened. They utilize the new concept of self-ordering and paying at the kiosk first. Then you find a table and wait for your number to be called. Food come out fresh. We wanted to be more adventurous and ordered Khao Soi and Nam Khao. We were impressed with Nam Khao, every bite melted in our mouth. Khao Soi was decent, though slightly on the saltier side. Thai iced tea was $5 and was very good. We liked how it was not overwhelmingly sweet. read more

Papaya salad: 1/5 (literally inedible because it was way too salty and spicy) Chicken glass noddle stir-fry: 2/5 (I enjoy Thai food so I know they use fish sauce in most of their dishes, but this had too much of that rotten stinky fish smell to it) Curry puffs/dumplings: 3.5/5 (at least this was edible) Cherry lemonade: 4/5 (only thing decently good) Price: Overpriced. Let's say the food was decent, I would still say it was overpriced. With that, considering how bad their food was, I honestly feel that they should have paid me instead. Will I go back? Nope. I've been here a few times since they opened. 1. Egg Noodle with Pork was a 5/10, I would not order this again. It is very basic and has no depth, which was disappointing because I was hoping it was similar to the Grandma Noodles at Food terminal. The sauce they give to pour over is a bit too sweet. Since it is only Noodles and Pork with scallions, it was not too great after a couple of bites. It needs a side dish or maybe some crispy onions to enhance it. It was $17 2. Beef Penang Curry 6.5/10, this dish was pretty good, except there was barely any beef in it. There was only about 7-8 pieces of beef. For the price of $16, I would say it is not worth it 3. Tom Yum Soup 0/10, the soup inspired me to make this review because it was so bad. It was very sweet, almost like candy. And inside the soup had some very big sliced red onions that were not pleasant when trying to have soup. For $9 it is only a single serving and definitely not worth the price 4. Pad Thai 8/10, their pad Thai was very good! This is the one dish I look forward to having again. They gave a decent amount of chicken and the flavor was done very well. Much better than Thai Norcross on Jimmy Carter. 5. Thai Tea 3/10, their Thai tea is 75% ice, and not sure if it was poured over the ice and sitting on the counter while I was waiting for my food, but by the time I tried it, it was watered down.
