Ordered from here twice now, and everything (flavors, portions, presentation) was top notch...they really have things dialed in. We've tried most of the sides: the Mac salad and cucumber salad were my favorites, with the spring rolls being the only one I probably wouldn't order again. Not exactly a side, but the fried cauliflower was awesome....its also big enough for 2-3 to share. The real stand out though was the Bang Bang chicken...it was really amazing! Most of their food is very good. But every time I have been in the last 6 months half of the rice is basically uncooked. Really crunchy bites, which can of ruin the teriyaki dish. However, I LOVE the teriyaki salmon and the beet salad! Please bring back the pineapple side dish! read more

I saw this place on Kenji's list and knew I had to try it. I can't believe I didn't come here sooner! I ordered the teriyaki chicken with Mac salad and cucumber salad. It comes with a side of sauce which is a little on the sweet side but still very good. The food is amazing and the portion size is also very good. This place is a small take out joint. I was worried at first that the food wouldn't taste as good by the time I got home but happy that wasn't the case. I will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu! read more

Definitely a 5-star restaurant! I only wish it had seating because having to smell that deliciousness as I drive home is torture! (But the best kind!) One thing I love about Grillbird is that they switch up their menu quite often; while that means some favs come and go (bye bye Ebi Shrimp Balls ) it also means chances to find new favs as well (OMG please keep the braised beef around 4-EV-AH!!) All the takeout is also in 100% compostable containers, which is delightful, and they're generous portions so we enjoy leftovers the next day. My personal favorites are the fried cauliflower, mochiko chicken, and the golden beets - and the new braised beef is absolute perfection: silky, melt-in-your-mouth in every bite, with a subtle sweet smokiness that compliments the rest of the food flavors. Solid place for some karage style chicken. As someone with Celiac, I appreciate when I can eat come fried chicken and a teriyaki/sesame style sauce. Love to get the plate combos with two sides. We were in the area and wanted a quick bite to eat. This location is pretty unassuming and take-out only, but I was pleased with the food. We ordered a build-your-own plate with 1/2 spicy garlic chicken and 1/2 katsu, with brown rice, chili garlic noodles, and cucumber. It came out to ~$17, and we were pleasantly surprised with the amount of food. We ordered at the shop and waited about 15 minutes. It seems like most people ordered online ahead of time, which makes sense since there's not really much space inside to wait. The sides and flavors were solid, and the chicken was crispy and not dry. We chose to "make it spicy", which turned out to have a stronger kick than we expected. It was a bit too spicy for my partner and also made the chicken a bit too over-sauced. Ambiance is fast food but very clean (including bathroom). This is a takeout only place. Service was really good. We were hungry so we ordered way too much. Spring rolls (you get 6!), sauce for those is really sweet. Family size Mac salad, garlic chili noodles, chicken katsu sando, teriyaki plate with half chicken and half mochiko (fried Hawaiian style) chicken. The sando and mochiko chicken were delicious (regular chicken teriyaki was good, nothing special but it had a nice char), rice was good, ginger sesame dressing for cabbage salad was excellent. The cucumber salad and Mac salad both desperately needed salt. Strangely, the garlic chili noodles were bland and flavorless, I put some tamari sauce on them when I got home and then they were good but I never tasted garlic or chili. They had an amazingly delicious watermelon sparkling soda that I loved but it contained high fructose corn syrup so that was disappointing because I would have ordered it every time if it were regular cane sugar. We got a text from them asking how our meal was and we let them know about the lack of seasoning and they responded immediately, thanking us for letting them know, telling us they would address the issues and thanking us for our support. Matt owns this place with his wife - he was the brainchild behind Kiki Ramen and Great State Burger (in a past life), and now, he's in West Seattle, with his own teriyaki place - opening about a month ago! The fast casual / takeout experience is definitely going to be among the "survivors" in the current state of food ordering - at least for the foreseeable future (this review was originally started at the end of March, 2020 - and finished whenever the heck it gets posted). 1) VARIETY/SELECTION: 9/10. Grillbird has a standard teriyaki selection of chicken, pork, steak, and tofu (as well as sesame chicken, but it's still chicken). They also have a chicken katsu option, which you can combo with any of the teriyaki options mentioned previously. They also have yakisoba noodles, greens and a chicken salad option as their "mains". On the online menu, they have a $6 sando, which is a katsu/cabbage/honeymustard/cheese/texas toast sandwich, which is kinda cool. For sides, they have fried cauliflower, cabbage salad, spring rolls, brown rice, or mac salad. 2) FRESHNESS: 9/10. Every time I've come here I've been impressed with the quality of food; I will say that it's not the cheapest option in West Seattle, but it's fantastic quality for what you pay for. 3) VALUE FOR MONEY: 9/10. I'm reasonably impressed at the price-to-value ratio, since the portion sizes are more than enough for a meal. Considering I didn't eat anything all day (currently doing OMAD since we're in the middle of... shall we say a "takeout era" of food ordering), this was more than enough for one person - I only had the chance to eat one spring roll because of how full I was! 4) SERVICE: 7.5/10. Most of the time, the food's ready in order of when the order came in the pipeline. There was one specific time I remember when I clearly saw an order online (on their website), and yet, they didn't receive it (when I arrived, they told me they didn't have an order). While they put my "replacement" order in the immediate priority queue, they most likely misheard me - because I'd tried to order the Chicken & Katsu combo dish, and instead got (and had to pay for) two separate dishes: chicken teriyaki & chicken katsu. Hopefully the ordering experience gets better with time, but given that it's the first 8-10 months of them being open, I'll chalk it up to "growing pains". Consistency is key, though. 5) CONSISTENCY / FIRST IMPRESSION: 7/10. The online ordering experience sometimes craps itself, so that's not the greatest feeling, when you get there, expecting your food, only to realize that (a) the order never actually went through, and (b) they're backed up. Besides that, calling in seems to be the smoothest transaction method, however this does mean you have to go in and pay when you arrive, instead of waiting for curbside pickup (if you were to order online, AND the order actually goes through). My original score for this was a 9/10 - this has slightly gone down since because of how difficult it can be to order - especially since online isn't 100% reliable, and they only have one phone line (meaning you could hit a busy signal ten tries in a row, if they're busy). read more

Pandemic Takeout review. Ordered chicken teriyaki from this place which is very close to my home. The chicken was delicious juicy and perfectly coated with Teriyaki sauce. The mac salad was awesome and so was the spicy cucumber side. I also ordered a side of the spicy oil and that just elevated the flavors of the chicken to the next level. I love some Grillbird when I want something between "fast" teriyaki and "sit down" service food. Grillbird elevates the average teriyaki joint. The meat and veg are juicy and fresh, and they offer a really nice salmon. Some things are definitely a miss here though like the over-priced cabbage "salad" (it's garnish really) and the not good spring rolls (frozen?). The prices are definitely higher than the average teriyaki joint, which I don't mind for the quality products. Service has been spotty (slow) over the years, but I will generally order online on my way from somewhere and it tends to work out. Initially they offered dine-in, but that dissolved during the pandemic. They seem to keep reinventing the in-store ordering and layout, which I assume is for more efficiency. It did lose its crispness during transport but that's to be expected. The mac salad has a tiny bit of sweetness. Staff was great and they had our order ready on time. We popped in to grab takeout and they were swamped. The cashier/owner asked us point blank, "can you wait 30 minutes?" I appreciated his question because that meant I knew what to expect, plus he was really nice about the whole thing (despite being mega busy). We ordered the pot roast and I had asked for no rice so he suggested putting it on a bed of cabbage, my partner ordered the katsu over rice and a side of gai lan. We got in the car and not even 10 minutes later, he was calling our name. I was so excited to not have to wait the anticipated 30 minutes. When we got home the sauce from the greens had spilled out and was pooling on the bottom of the bag, not their fault but I think had it been packaged a little tighter it might have prevented it. Also, the orders were wrong. The katsu was over a bed of cabbage and the pot roast was over rice. This was slightly annoying because all of the sauce from the roast was on the rice. My other issue was that the roast was literal chunks it wouldn't have been an issue if it had been more tender. My partner liked the katsu fine. The mac salad had a little too much acid for me but it was still good. I was mega excited to try Grillbird and I'm still planning on coming again to check out other items. read more

They don't allow phone orders and the internet orders rarely function properly. Otherwise you pay or sign up for another service they use. When I called and explained that the internet order isn't working they said "we'll do it this one time but if you call back again, we'll remember you." We just moved to Seattle this last weekend and are trying new places as we go. This evening, we decided on Grillbird and were not at all disappointed. Not only are they fast, but efficient, and so very friendly at the counter. The food was piping hot and smelled amazing on the way home, so it was hard not to try a bite in the car. The Sesame Chicken is some of the best I've ever had. My wife got the Bang Bang Chicken and Teriyaki plate. All were so very delicious. We drive past this place a lot, so we finally decided to try it! We ordered dinner from Grillbird on a Saturday. They are open during COVID-19 for take out or delivery. Their website looks really nice and has a lot of pictures. It was super easy to place and pay for our order online. The only annoying thing was the website said the food would take 30 minutes, but it was more like 15. Luckily, they send you a text message when the food is actually ready. I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki (chicken, white or brown rice, cabbage salad, and macaroni salad). It took me a long time to realize the cabbage salad dressing was in a separate container, LOL. Also, I'm not a huge macaroni salad fan, but I thought it was ok. The noodles had a good texture and it wasn't too sweet. Although the teriyaki sauce is gluten free, the macaroni salad is not. We also ordered a side of spring rolls, which are 6 fried vegetable rolls with sweet and sour or honey mustard sauce. I thought the rolls were cooked perfectly, sized well, and a good portion. Unfortunately they forgot to include the dipping sauce and of course we didn't realize until we were already home. :-( Again, I thought the food was ok, but I'm not sure we will go back. They have a parking lot, but it was full of cars (some randomly parked). Also, it was kind of hard to exit to the left since the intersection always seems backed up. read more

First, you should know that I am not approaching this review as someone who is savvy about teriyaki. It is not my even in my top 10 of favorite chicken preparation techniques. I'm not from Seattle. So I feel like it is okay for me to type this. Also, I personally have an issue mixing sweets and savories. It's just not my thing. And then to top it all off, I'm gluten intolerant. So, even though all the cards are stacked against me enjoying teriyaki, I actually really enjoy Grillbird's teriyaki. The chicken is moist and tender, both the char mark flavors and the sweetness of the teriyaki sauce absolutely pop. And taken altogether with the greens and rice, I think that this is one of the best teriyaki meals in Seattle. (Though, remember...I know pretty much nothing about teriyaki, and by all accounts, I shouldn't even like it!) Lastly, I don't have much to say about the other offerings, but I do love the fried cauliflower. On those rare occasions when I'm just not feeling the teriyaki, I'll drop by Grillbird...all the way from "off the island" in Beacon Hill just for the fried cauliflower, crispy, rich, and delicious on the outside and soft, rich, and cauliflowery on the inside. As for service, you order online, they tell you when its ready, then you pick it up, enjoy it at your favorite eating spot. Simple counter service. That's all you need to know. Just ordered Pork Teriyaki with extra pork and three cans of Sprite. I've ordered this several times already and each time the extra pork is in an extra container. This time there wasn't an extra container of pork so I went back inside to ask where the extra pork was. The girl said he packed it into the food container. Umm, every time I've ordered this, the food container hasn't had any extra room to put the extra pork that's why they have always put it in an extra container. Seeing that they are screwing customers over now. I'm probably not going to be ordering anything more from this point on. This isn't how you run a new business people!!!! And I paid an extra $4.00 for extra pork and really didn't get it in this order! And the amount you charge for your food isn't cheap at all. This order with a 15% tip was over $31.00 for one pork teriyaki with extra pork and brown rice and three cans of sprite. Not a happy camper I find it real funny that Matt the owner posted what he did! Umm I have ordered this exact order like five times in the last three weeks!!!!! And the amount of pork in this order was the exact same amount as my last five orders just without the extra pork that I paid for! For a new business you really should think twice posting a stupid ass reply like you did. And trust me I won't be ordering anything else from your establishment. There's way more teriyaki restaurants out there that I would rather give my hard earned money too. Outstanding. Delicious. Worth the wait. Quality. Great customer service. I honestly can not even finish my dinner until I write how I am feeling about this food. We ordered on Uber and the first order was taken by the driver but that's a whole other story We called, got our order replaced and just dropped off. We wanted to try a few things and found that this place may be the best in Seattle. For once we are not drowning is sugary sweet teriyaki and sticky dry rice like so many places. The salad sauce for the cabbage is perfectly tangy and hands down I could bathe in it. I want to put it in everything. The real star on the menu is the katsu chicken sandwich. Oh. My. Goodness. Yes. Yes. Yes. It's like a delicious, absolutely the best and only way to eat a chicken sandwich. Fuck Chik Fil A, fuck Pop Eyes!
