We passed by early (~5:30 pm) last Saturday evening and the place was nearly empty (warning sign). Nevertheless, we went in, grabbed a booth, and started perusing the super comprehensive menu. There's a lot of seafood dishes - which I wasn't feeling too much that day, so I was inexplicably queasy. M. and I ended up picking our mainstay of pad thai, with a plate of broccoli & squid for some fiber and texture. The food took a little longer than expected (because first, the place is empty - second, Thai food's usually made screaming hot and quick). When it did come out, however, it exceeded expectations. The pad thai was truly authentic, quite alike to the ones I've had in the Bangkok weekend market. Smoky, delicately sweet, tangy, not wet, plenty of wok hei - it hit every note it was supposed to with pinpoint accuracy. The veggie dish was equally formidable; we were actually surprised it was broccoli as Americans know it, and not gai lan (which we had intended, haha). The squid was tender and was enjoyable to eat. I'm coming here again for sure! I'd try the mango sticky rice dessert and some of the curries.

A friend of mine first introduced it to me. She'd been having her take aways there for dinner and suggested we try one day. Since then I have been a regular to this place. In fact it is conveniently located for me, at a corner just at the end of Amoy Street as you come from Hennessy Road. It doesn't look very exciting from outside and even a little run down, but that's part of its charm. The place is run by four lovely Thai ladies whose kitchen is open to the (rather small) dinning space. The dishes come quite quickly but don't expect them to rush to take your order. The atmosphere is laid back. There are around 6 tables that accommodate for twenty people maximum. Now, the thing I go there for is the food...or should I say the curries and the Tom Yum Soup. If you go for curries, I would suggest you try their pork red or chicken green from the dinner menu. They come in big bowls with plenty of meat and vegetables but no rice (I don't eat rice). I assure you it makes for a big meal and it's just delicious. The curries are mild but you can ask them to make them spicier if you like. I would also recommend you go there at the end of the day because I have noticed their sauces taste better then (they might cook them in the morning and let the sauces soak in the flavor of the spices...). Their prices are very reasonable (around 50-60 per curry dish) and they don't have service charge. It's never very crowded, as opposed to the rest of the places on that same street. Their opening times vary, but they close early in the evening. My little Thai is definitely not a place for a fancy dinner or where I would take a date on the first day but more of a local dinning place with tons of charm and it's great value for money. I have only had a better Thai curry and that was recently, at Thai Basil in Pacific Place. I feel like I should write a review about this place too.

It was really difficult to assemble it which is fine because the name already entails work. This place has good value for money. Average spending per person is no more than $250. Besides all the regular Thai food like deep-fried prawn cakes and fish cakes, satay skewers, pad Thai and fried rice, the must-eats here are the Tom Yum Soup or coconut chicken soup and the oyster omelette. The oyster omelette has some of the freshest oysters in it. As for drinks, they're one of the few restaurants in HK that serves Thai iced tea. It's not the best I've tried but it definitely satisfies my occasion craving for it. Thai Simple Kitchen has an outdoor area which is great when the weather is not too hot or too cold. It could have gotten a five-star review but on my recent visit, I felt that they had a shortage of staff and it's often hard to call for a waiter especially when your table is at the back corner of the restaurant. They're right next to the ocean and all their seafood tastes super fresh and so juicy. My favorite dishes of the night were the Penang seafood curry that comes in a delightful coconut shell, the Satay skewers, the spicy beef salad/larb, and the fried prawns with fried onions and sweet/sour sauce. It was amazing! The only dish that I would say to avoid is the pad Thai. We get that a lot in America so I just wanted to see how it's done abroad.
