Everything we had was flavorful and tasted like the kind of Thai food you'd find in Thailand. I also loved the decor. The restaurant has such a strong Thai aesthetic that you really feel immersed in the experience rather than sitting in a typical Thai restaurant in Hong Kong. Prices are definitely on the pricier side, but I didn't regret spending a little more here. The food was good, the atmosphere was great and the whole experience felt worth it. Samsen will always be a recommendation I give to anyone craving great Thai food. The combination of authentic flavors and the beautiful setting makes them stand out.

I started off with their Tom Yum soup and boy was it amazing. Some places tend to serve it too creamy, too spicy or too sour/tart but this places does Tom Yum soup proud with the perfect mixture of harmony. I don't personally usually order Tom Yum soup at Thai places because how easy it is to screw it but my Aunt personally recommended that it's good here and I'm so glad I got to try it. Highly recommended. Next came something I never had before, it was raw shrimp served dressed with some chili and garlic slices. Also to accompany the shrimp was a spicy sauce which looked to have some vinegar, cilantro, green onions, chili peppers, and other spices. It had a nice clean kick to it. Next was the pork shanks simmered in what looked to be five spiced broth with Chinese broccoli. The pork was very tender and full of flavor. Definitely worth trying here. On came the skewers, we got beef, chicken, and pork. This was pretty decent but the meats could have been more tender. Out of the three, the pork skewer tasted the best as it had more meat flavor compared to the others. Next came some garlic bread which was good but what made it stand out was the curry that you had to dip with it. Amazing curry! It was a little sweet and reminded me of Malay curry. Then came a whole perfectly cooked chicken. It was so fresh and tender. It was so good that I ate the bulk of it! The white meat could almost be confused with the dark meat in a blind taste test. That's how good it was! Next came the Egg Plant but I'm usually not a fan of Eggplant but they enjoyed it. Then because my Aunt knows the owner, we got a special off the menu item which was a Pumpkin Prawn curry with noodles (yee mein). One of my favorite kind of asian noodles. It went so well with the curry. Definitely recommend ordering it if you can haha. Next to lighten up the already huge amount of food we ordered for 4 people lol, we got a salad with consisted of little Pomelo pulps, cashews, small dried shrimp, chili peppers, green onion, and baby shrimps. If you want great prices and legit authentic Thai food. This has got to be one the places but it's quite a drive outside the city but totally worth the drive!

What's amazing is that they serve up authentic Thai food. I've been here a few times and it's has never disappointed me. Tom Khaa Kai, Pad Thai, and Hanianese Chicken are some of my favourite dishes. There's so much flavour in everything! This is their first branch so the décor has never been updated. Think simple 2nd floor shop. Ma & Pa style decorations and tiny toilets. Their Causeway Bay shop is loads better with décor but it's missing a je ne sais quoi. Some notes: There are loads of dishes that you may want to order a head of time. So check out them menu and give them a call. Also lunch, dinner and bigger parties should book ahead. It's a small dinning room. Would definitely come back!

When it comes to food, you're rest assured you can get authentic Thai food here. We pre-ordered 2 plates of raw shrimp in advance and they were very fresh! We also ordered some beef and chicken satay skewers, shrimp cakes and fish cakes as appetizers. Oh my lord... the fish cakes were the best I've ever tried! Chewy yet not fishy! For the main course, we had pork knuckles, grilled fish with lemon sauce (served on the grill), curry with deep fried chicken and the stir-fried clams in chili paste. Everything was rich in flavor and simply delicious!!! For dessert, of course we cannot miss the mango sticky rice! There was not one dish that was just mediocre. I must say everything was excellent here! Sawali Club is a private kitchen, so do book in advance and they only accept cash. I recommend this place for groups as you can order many dishes to share.

I wasn't here to eat dinner, so didn't get a chance to try other items, but I'm confident enough to say that I would anticipate greatness throughout their Thai, Malay, and Indian offerings. It wasn't too saucy, unlike the one I tried at nearby Koh Thai further up the escalators. They kinda scrimped on the shrimp, but surprisingly I'm the type of person who likes more noodles than chicken/beef/shrimp so this didn't bother me too much. It might if you like more of the latter! I washed it all down with a Thai iced tea, though it wasn't the best as it got watered down easily. I'd happily return to try their pineapple fried rice and other dishes next time!

This restaurant is a bit out of the way and the kind of place you wouldn't know about unless you knew a local. I learned of this spot from my aunt who lives in HK and has brought me here for dinner a couple times. The storefront does not have an English name so you will need to look for the Chinese title. Look for a red color sign. The restaurant interior has a feel of a hole in the wall. When you enter, grab a table if there is one open. Though be forewarned that you might need to share it if the restaurant fills up. It is best to get in early (5-ish) before the crowd at dinner time. There isn't an English menu, so it helps if you come here with a Chinese speaker. But there are menu item photos plastered over the wall so you could simply point to what you want here. The signature menu item here are their dan dan noodles. They are also a very good deal since it is just HK$24. This dish is spicy, though you can ask for a less spicy version but it is a bit watered down in flavor. On my recent trip, I had a few other items in addition to the dan dan noodles and all four of them were great. They have this fried fish appetizer which are crunchy that I couldn't get enough of. Then there were the two Sichuanese standards, chili green beans with ground beef and ma po tofu. The green beans were nice and crisp with plenty of garlic and chili pepper. The ma po tofu was silky and comforting. They also have xiaolongbao here which are HK$50 for an order of 8. For a restaurant that does not specialize in Shanghai cuisine, I thought these were quite good. Not the best I have had, but solid. The service is great here. And the chef was quite accommodating despite all of the special requests we had. I saw this spot, saw people in it and figured, why not. The prices were certainly reasonable, particularly as the lunch menu offers some deals. The folks who run the place are certainly quite nice, and after some consultation with the server, I took his recommendation for green curry with chicken. We have a very good Thai food scene in Los Angeles, and while I assumed it would be good here in Hong Kong, unfortunately this was a bit of a disappointment (I was later told by an HK foodie that the Thai food is in fact better in LA). The first thing that put me off was the chicken. It may be that chicken here at the smaller places tends to use more "humble" cuts than we're used to in the States, with fat and skin attached, and there was something a little strange about the texture to me. While I've never seen cauliflower in a green curry--there were also string beans--it was certainly fine. But the other problem was green curry itself. It just didn't have a ton of flavor. Maybe they figured "white guy, let's make it super bland," but even if it's not spicy--and I told them medium was fine--it should still be flavorful. So even though everyone here was nice and the food was certainly reasonable in price, it's hard to say things were A-OK when this dish unfortunately was a bit lacking.
