I don't know how I decided to eat here for the first time (whether it was a recommendation from a policy coworker that would serve as a gleaming recommendation, or noticing a Vietnamese restaurant named after a famous beach town), but I enjoy trying Viet food in non-Viet areas whenever I can (think outside of Vietnam or Vietnamese community centers). Of all the Vietnamese restaurants in Hong Kong I have tried so far, the food at this restaurant tastes closest to what I remember eating as a child, which is Vietnamese food made by Vietnamese people for Vietnamese people. Mind you, I was based in New Territories, so it's not as internationally oriented as Hong Kong Island is, so options are limited. If you're in New Territories and want to taste more traditional Vietnamese food, this place holds promise. I've tried their com tam, bánh cuon, bún bò Hue, bánh xèo, and bún riêu. These are all safe things for me to order, as they're all dishes that I've grown up eating. The fish sauce of course is the key element of flavoring to many of these dishes (the non soup noodle dishes), so don't forget to add the fish sauce!

There's still a definite influence from French cooking on the other available dishes, but I would recommend venturing out of your comfort zone and definitely trying something spicy or some grilled meats. For something a little different but familiar, I would give the rice paper salad rolls and vermicelli cake a try. Overall, a nice place to visit for fresh, light Vietnamese food.

The service is prompt and friendly. Our party of four ordered a few Cantonese favorites such as the fried shrimp roll, fried noodles, steamed rice rolls, and beef balls. The food came out steaming hot and the aroma quickly filled the dining place. We thoroughly enjoyed every bite of the meal. While it cost more than the norm, we thought it was worth it as the quality was top notch and the noise level was kept low. We will definitely come again when craving great Cantonese food that is without the rush of the crowds (which can really be overwhelming when all you want is to eat and relax).

The steak here is just alright and might be over charging for its quality. Lobster is usually overlooked and too dry in my opinion. Burger is just ok. It's not as good as Hard Rock Cafe or BLT burger. Ruby Tuesday in Hong Kong is general cost twice as much as the U.S. Well rent is probably more than twice in this case. $228 for Quesadillas, $368 for Aged Sirloin, $448 for Wagyu steak, $218 for beef lasagna.

OMGGGGGGGGG I could eat this whole thing without sharing!!!!!! Fried mussels are spicy!! But they're fresh and big mussels, with really tasty sauce. Careful not to eat the peppers! The dish looks small but I come with 4-5 people and everyone gets at least one. There's enough that some of us (like me!) get 2-3!! Such sharing companions! Fried rice (all flavours) come with scrambled eggs and Thai sweet sausage on top. I like this a lot actually and I mix it with whatever leftover curry I decide to drink up. Skewers!! They're good. We have a very good Thai food scene in Los Angeles, and while I assumed it would be good here in Hong Kong, unfortunately this was a bit of a disappointment (I was later told by an HK foodie that the Thai food is in fact better in LA). The first thing that put me off was the chicken. It may be that chicken here at the smaller places tends to use more "humble" cuts than we're used to in the States, with fat and skin attached, and there was something a little strange about the texture to me. While I've never seen cauliflower in a green curry--there were also string beans--it was certainly fine. But the other problem was green curry itself. It just didn't have a ton of flavor. Maybe they figured "white guy, let's make it super bland," but even if it's not spicy--and I told them medium was fine--it should still be flavorful. So even though everyone here was nice and the food was certainly reasonable in price, it's hard to say things were A-OK when this dish unfortunately was a bit lacking.

The Tom Yum Kung is wonderful when the weather is cold. And the ice cendol is pretty good for its price. You can also have whole fried or steamed fish, or you can have Hot Pot. Mmm... The only downside side is that the food comes a little slow as there are only a few people in the kitchen cooking for a good amount of people. Apparently every table at the restaurant was celebrating birthdays. With the lead of Chingmy, all the waitresses started coming out and danced along. Although we didn't celebrate anyone's birthday at our table, we enjoyed the vibe and clapped along with the Thai birthday song. When it comes to food, you're rest assured you can get authentic Thai food here. We pre-ordered 2 plates of raw shrimp in advance and they were very fresh! We also ordered some beef and chicken satay skewers, shrimp cakes and fish cakes as appetizers. Oh my lord... the fish cakes were the best I've ever tried! Chewy yet not fishy! For the main course, we had pork knuckles, grilled fish with lemon sauce (served on the grill), curry with deep fried chicken and the stir-fried clams in chili paste. Everything was rich in flavor and simply delicious!!! For dessert, of course we cannot miss the mango sticky rice! There was not one dish that was just mediocre. I must say everything was excellent here! Sawali Club is a private kitchen, so do book in advance and they only accept cash. I recommend this place for groups as you can order many dishes to share.
