We had been wanting to try the Green Elephant for some time, and were excited to go for our anniversary. We went early at 4 when they opened, in hopes it would be more relaxed since we had read reviews about it getting busy. When we arrived there was one diner already eating but we sat down quickly. I asked about the gluten free options (since there was mention that they offered some) but when I asked the waitress, she said there were many things and to "see what I wanted and ask her" if it was gluten free. This was difficult since the menu had the traditional names for the dishes but no description. I told her what I usually get and hoped she might suggest something. She did not, she walked away. I did ask about the appetizers (are they rice paper) but none are gluten free so we didn't order any. She kept having to walk away while discussing the menu so I ended up googling dish names to see the preparation and potential ingredients. Two more tables came in and she didn't have time to explain what the dishes were we were interested in. I have worked as a waitress, and we kept saying "no rush" . If you have diet concerns, there is no way to work with the menu since there is no description of the food or distinguishing "gluten free" options like other menus. Some have "GF" or a star by safe items. My husband asked if the noodle dish could be made with a different protein (shrimp vs chicken) but was told no, it cant. He saw the fried fish at the earlier diners table and ordered it. His was literally half the size as the "regular" customers. We heard her telling someone she had been coming here for 12 years and we were impressed with that. We always have a favorite restaurant and wanted this to be ours. We asked if there was mango sticky rice tonight, no there was not. So, while we wanted to love this place and find our new "go to" it didn't happen. We realize we are not regulars (yet) but felt like she just didn't have the time to make us feel welcome. The reviewers don't lie about this wonderful little Burmese cuisine place. Friends have told us about it, and the reviews tell a story too. The location in Loomis is a little off the beaten path (you think you are leaving town), and in a super small strip mall. Step inside and you find a cute little family owned restaurant that will make you wonder "where did I just get transported to?"... A few tables in the front room and a second dining area to the right. It is important to note that you MUST be patient! There is only the owner running the front of house here. She is doing everything. Super friendly, and being as quick as she can to get tables cleared, people seated, orders taken and served. She does all of this with the most wonderful smile and personality. You will immediately fall in love with her. Many of the diners on this particular night already knew her and appeared to have long standing relationships with the family. We came in on a Saturday evening around 5:15pm and the floor was packed. It remained that way until around 6:30pm. I would suggest coming in later in the evening so the 'regulars' can get in and out. Ok, so now on to the food and why the Green Elephant is such a standout. Everything is super fresh, and flavorful with great depth in the sauces. We started with the tea leaf salad, and pork lumpia. Then Panang chicken and spicy garlic pepper pork and an order of rice. We love spicy food, and requested such (she has a spice scale of 1-10). Our mains were a level 7 and that was sufficient to give us good heat without compromising the flavors. She will also bring you a small dish of chili pepper oil if you want even more heat. By the time we were finished, the floor had cleared, so we know now to arrive a little later. How could I have never reviewed this place? It always amazes me that one of the only places I can find Burmese food outside of San Francisco. Francisco was in Lincoln of all places. Now there's one or two other spots, but green elephant is the original gangster that brought Burmese food to this area. It's tucked away in a very nonchalant area. The restaurant is really cute with lots of nice decorations and the service is super nice. The lady that works there is fantastic. She's always there every time I've been in so I'm guessing she's the owner. The food of course is amazing. I have impressed many a friend by taking them over here for a tea leaf salad. I don't remember which noodle dish it was but it was basically like chow mein with Indian spicy. I really loved it and I always try to get it whenever I come here. A nice little "mom and pop" Asian restaurant hidden away in Loomis - and I pretty much mean that in the literal sense. As far as I know, this is a two-person operation.... one in back cooking and one out front serving. They do a great job! As you might expect, they can get bogged down a bit if they get hit with a crowd in a short period of time, but the host/server/owner was very nice and upfront with us about the fact that several people came in just before us and gave us a good idea how long it'd take for us to get our orders in and filled. She was very transparent, and that was appreciated! We decided to stay even though it'd take awhile since we knew it'd be worth the wait. We ordered Coconut Shrimp, Crab Fried Rice and Chili Jam Chicken. All were new dishes for us at this restaurant and we wanted to give them a try. The Coconut Shrimp was good and comparable to the typical dish at other restaurants. Pretty much the same thing applies to the fried rice... except crab fried rice is less common to, say, shrimp fried rice... and the crab tends to blend into the rice and disappear more than shrimp does. I think there was a reasonable amount of crab in there... I could taste it... it just camouflages easily in the rice! The Chili Jam Chicken was really the dish I wanted to try. I've never had it, and reviews by others were glowing! I agree with the others that it's a very tasty and somewhat unique dish. I'll loosely compare it the butter chicken for those familiar with that dish... the chili jam adds a very interesting and unique depth and complexity of flavor - very, very good! The praise for this dish is well deserved, and I consider it one of the top specialties or signature dishes for this restaurant. This might not be the best option on a busy night if you're in a hurry or lack patience... but like I said, they're very honest and transparent about any potential wait - and imo, they're very honest food is worth it. read more

Wonderful experience. After reading reviews, we decided to come right at open. The wife was very inviting and provided details of items we were interested in ordering. I ordered the chili jam chicken. It was very good (sweet) but had little heat. Leftovers were much better as chili peppers brought out more heat in the dish. My daughter ordered butter chicken. She was not a huge fan, said mine was better but it didn't stop her from finishing it. Hubby ordered the Burmese beef curry. It was very good and the meat was super tender. We also ordered appetizers pork lumpia (tasted like what we buy at 'Oriental Market' in Roseville), roti (super greasy and again didn't taste homemade), and samosas. We all agreed, next time no appetizers as they were just meh and way overpriced (sold at $2/$3 a piece). The shining star of our meal was the tea leaf salad. Absolutely delicious, though I has no idea what all was in it. It was definitely our favorite part of the meal. My daughter ordered the mango lassi. It was not something she'd order again as it was super salty even after sending it back. We will definitely be back but only occasionally as a meal for the 3 of us with a tip ran about $140. A Thai restaurant in Loomis? Yes, and a very good one too. This is an unpretentious place tucked away in a small strip mall. Based on the reviews, we decided to try this place and were not disappointed. We had the green curry with chicken and vegetables and the shrimp with eggplant entrée. Everything was delicious and freshly cooked. I liked the variety of vegetables that was in the curry chicken. There was so much flavor and I was pleased that it was not too spicy. The restaurant did fill up fast. There are two rooms but it gets busy quickly. I am simply amazed with the owner, she was the only one waiting on tables and was running around efficiently getting everyone's order and serving them. However, I did get a sense that we were being rushed and that put a damper on wanting to relax, eat slowly and visit with our friend. She was the only one working the tables that night and it was hard to get her attention. She was not very flexible and told you that she could not change your order once you put it in. This inflexibility and the feeling of being rushed is the reason I knocked off a star. Otherwise, the food is great, very flavorful, fresh and delicious. Small restaurant but every table was taken in the main room by 5:45 pm (Sat night). The server seemed reluctant to seat us, but we said we were willing to wait! So we and 3 other groups (all of us arrived between 5:45-5:50 pm) were seated in the 2nd overflow room. She warned us that we would need to wait, and she was right. It took about an hour for her to take our order, but the food came quickly after we ordered. We had the famous tea leaf salad and yes it was worth the wait!! Next we had the laksa soup. It's a rich soup that gives you a warm, satisfied feeling. We really could have stopped there because we were pretty full. But we had the Burmese beef curry which was definitely good but I think we were already full and the first two were our favorites. Definitely want to come back and try ALL their dishes. They are only open 4-8 pm on Tues-Sat. They are busy at 4 pm with takeout orders. And I sense that they try to just fill the main room and avoid the overflow room. When we finished (we were in the overflow room), there wasn't anybody in the main room, which tells me that they didn't seat anybody else after we arrived. The server is the owner and her boyfriend does the cooking. No one gets mad about the wait because she's honest about it and you can tell that this is the classic mom and pop type restaurant. Green Elephant has been on my bucket list of places to try for MONTHS now. Finally made it in last night for an early dinner and it exceeded all expectations. Such a hidden gem in an older plaza. The inside is warm and cozy and very beautifully decorated. It's small, only about 10 tables, so we arrived just after 4pm when it opened. The owner was the waitress and she is such a sweetheart. Very friendly, knowledgeable, and personable. Let's talk food. Since it was our first visit, it was very hard to pick items as everything on the menu sounded delicious. We decided to start with veggie lumpia and the infamous tea leaf salad which the owner recommended to us. Man, by far the best salad I've ever had in my life. I wish this restaurant was open for lunch so I could have it all the table! Light, bright, and the most interesting blend of flavors. For our entrees we ordered Chicken CeeChat Garlic Noodles, Burmese Beef Curry (level 6 spicy), and Chili Jam Chicken with a side of steamed rice. It's really hard to pick a favorite between the beef curry and chili jam. Both were spectacular. The curry had the perfect amount of spice and tasted like an Asian beef stew. Chili jam chicken had a tad bit of spice and some sweetness. It's really hard to describe the flavor but I highly recommend ordering it! It's the restaurants own creation. Wife and I tried this place at a friend's recommendation. Burmese food in Loomis? I was skeptical. When we pulled into the rundown strip mall, my skepticism grew. The owner came out to greet us, and she was delightful. She assessed our knowledge of Burmese food, made some recommendations, and we followed them. After Tea Leaf Salad, the Burmese take on Tom Kah Gai (quite different than Thai versions we'd had), Chili Prawns, and Mango Pickle Pork Curry we were very happy, indeed. There were tons of textures, and a nice mix of flavors in each dish. The owner said that they make their own sauces/pastes from scratch. The place is small and cozy, and has a family-run vibe that we loved. The delicious food and wonderful service has made this our new favorite place. I wanted to order pad Thai but chose another nudel dash that I was not that crazy about . My friend ordered beef stew and that one was delicious! We got tea leaf salad to shear . Our portion was very small. I would not recommend taking this salad to shear , but in our case it was ok because salad was so salty that I didn't want it . We also had faluda to shear . It was ok but I am sure I won't order this again . When I heard that they had it I was very excited as another place in SF where I used to go had it and that was delicious, this one I didn't like . My Thai tea also was too sweet and I would not order it again here . But over all I did like this place and there is plenty of other dishes that we can try from the menu. When I hear Burmese, tea leaf salad is the first thing that comes to mind. I love the crunch and multitude of flavors in every bite. Theirs was good even though my friend didn't think that highly of it. Her fav was the shrimp fried rice. I liked the shrimp pad thai more. Rice vs. noodles. Their shrimp was exceptionally good, big ones almost like prawns cooked perfectly. The chili jam chicken was good too, thinly sliced and drenched in sauce. Very tasty. The only item we both didn't like was the beef curry, had a dry overcooked taste to it. Had the consistency of lamb. Cute, small place. I'm always amazed at how decorations can totally uplift small places. Good job decorating! Love the elephants. I thought "green" elephant alluded to money but the lady told us they settled on Green Elephant instead of Green forest elephant to shorten it. Would definitely be back! Been coming here for a couple of years now and everything we've tried has been delicious. The tea leaf salad is a must every time we go. Other favorites are the panang beef curry, mango pickle pork curry, and the crab fried rice. It's run by the owner and one other person so I highly recommend going during the week as it can get pretty busy on Fridays and Saturdays. It looked like a side salad definitely only enough for one person. Pretty bummed out because I love bermese food and being that there are few in the area I'm so upset this place wasn't good. My first attempt at Burmese food in Sacramento area, I have only tried 1 other Burmese restaurant in San Francisco before this. I got a takeout of the Coconut chicken curry and the Beef curry. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Beef curry tasted so good, it was well seasoned and cooked perfectly to my liking. This dish is a must try! It's been awhile since I've been here and I had asked my Thai lady friend if she had ever tried Tea leaf salad and she said she hasn't so we made a lunch date to come here and they were only open for dinner, Bummer! So we ended up having lunch at the Chinese restaurant next door! Weeks went by and our Korean friend wanted to have a dinner date. She mentions Green Elephant and my Thai friend and I were ready! I've been here before multiple times and I was so excited to have my Asian BFF's try this place! We love Burmese food and was excited to find this place. We ordered 4 dishes listed as Burmese but found it was not authentic, more fusion-like. It was tasty, nothing out of the ordinary. This is my first review and I felt compelled due to Rachel's parting comment when we were paying for the bill. She informed us that because we made a reservation for 4 people and only 3 of us showed up, they normally charge $10 for no-shows but she was not going to do it THIS TIME!!! How are they defining "NO SHOW"? 3 of us were there, and we spent close to $100. "NO SHOW" means NONE of us showed up. This is only my second time having Burmese food. We got take out and I didn't go to the restaurant myself. We tried a variety of dishes, some of which I'm unsure of the name. We started with the soup, which I believe is called ohn no khao swè. I think it was referred to as the laksa noodle soup. It was unique with noodles and slices of hard boiled eggs. I enjoyed the crispy bits in it. Next, we had the tea leaf salad. I usually don't like nuts in my salad, but it added a nice texture. The chicken pad kee maw (drunken noodles) were bland.
