I chose Green Collar for my City of Austin Weatherization service. I was hesitant, and called the office to ask questions about the business. Cord spent about 20 minutes answering my questions about how long they had been in business, how they would handle unexpected problems, and what I could expect. The owner Ron came out for the evaluation appointment and he also explained more details of the work they would perform. The installation of new ac ducts went very smoothly and the workers cleaned up after finishing each day. I would highly recommend Green Collar to anyone needing duct replacement or repair. read more

As we head into this cold snap weekend, 10/10 appreciation for Green Collar!! They revamped our flipped home's rather chaotic HVAC system over the past three weeks in conjunction with the City of Austin/Austin Energy rebate program for energy efficiency improvements. The owner of the company provided our estimate, the team arrived within the time windows predicted, they were competent and courteous, and they did a *fantastic* job modernizing our system to heat quietly and evenly throughout. They added a vent to a bathroom that had been inexplicably left without one, improved the insulation throughout, and added an attic walkway for safety. We've been tolerating very uneven temps and noisy vents for the past 10 years, and I wish we would have discovered Green Collar sooner! It is *NICE* in here. Have used them twice - problems each time. Pre-sales is great (Bill Cook), but seems they contract the work out to the lowest bidder. No quality control after they have your money. First time - had a plenum box replaced at an old Hyde Park house. No one living there. They opened the attic access and left it open for days. When they finally showed up and replaced the plenum, they left the old in the attic along with any other trash including lunch! I called and Green Collar came out and cleaned it up. This is just a plenum replacement on a small unit! 3200 sq ft house in Dripping Springs. They completely replaced the ducts, blew in insulation, and basically redesigned air distribution (big bux!). There were immediate problems with some rooms freezing and some very hot. They sent a guy out to assess. We were told it was air distribution and was shown how to adjust the flow. There were no changes to the problem so we called again. This time we were told that we were going to be charged for a service call. After arguing with the co-owner, she agree this would be the last time for a free visit to fix. Only about a month had gone by to this point. Guy came the second time, readjusted air flow again, noticed some of the new ducts were ripped, and basically said good luck. We have lived with it for about a year thinking the new air distribution plan had flaws. Last week we had a HVAC company show up for unrelated issues. They went into the attic an immediately saw very clinched, pinched, and misrouted ducts (see pics). They fixed and all of a sudden the rooms that were hot for a year now are cool! They explained how the restrictions on the new ducts was preventing air flow - the very reason we hired Green Collar to begin with. Someone else fixing problems that Green Collar should have easily found and rectified even before "we are finished" stage. Bill Cook is good. After that, you are dealing with the same old don't care, let's get it done, we have their money attitude in this unregulated business. Best advice is get an estimate from Bill and then go elsewhere to get Bill's plan implemented. read more

We wanted to get a quote on new insulation as our home has never felt like the right temperature. Adam arrived the next day and provided a plan to reroute and replace our AC duct system, as well as add some returns in the rooms. Fabulous Diagnostic Skills. Very detail-oriented. They are real masters at explaining technical things about furnaces and ducts to a layman like myself and really make them make sense. I just had a new AC, furnace and insulation installed by Green Collar. Holy Moley, talk about good service. I knew from the minute I talked with Bill Cook I wanted these guys to install (helped by the fact that my friend and well respected broker Eileen Gill recommended them VERY highly). Bill was patient with my questions, gave me a very thorough assessment of what i needed, was very transparent with pricing and options on COA rebates and programs vs what I needed. He didn't upsell, worked with my budget, and I felt like he really had my best interests at heart. A great experience all around. We contracted with them as a prerequisite for a solar installation on our home. They were recommended by our solar contractor and as a vendor that does a lot of work with the Austin Energy inspectors (which have to approve your home before you can get solar). We have a two story house built in 1983 that gets very hot during the summer. We called Green Collar Operations because of their strong online reviews. We received a quote from Bill, who was very knowledgable, professional and friendly. The quote appointment took about 30 minutes. In general, the quote process is low pressure... we waited nearly 7 months before moving forward with the work and we didn't get any spam emails or calls inbetween. Once we decided to move forward (attic insulation, the cool aide package, etc.) the team made it out to our house the very next week. This was awesome.The crew arrived on time and thoroughly weather-proofed our home. When it was our baby's nap time, the crew went out of their way to work silently, which was even more awesome. It took the team 2-3 hours to complete the work and we could tell that evening that our upstairs was much cooler than it had been before. Rob, Green Collar's owner, then came out two weeks later to inspect the work. Last Fall we spent over $5000 to have insulation put in our attic and re duct work the entire upstairs. Now, a few months later, the insulation is not cooling our attic. I called today to have them come back out (The owner guaranteed his work was warrantied and he would come out if I asked) his wife answered, and when I explained what was going on she told me to "calm down" when I was clearly not upset just asking for a visit to look over the work. From there I got put on their calendar quite quickly, only about a 2 week turnaround. The team completed the work while I was at the office. I came home to a clean and COMFORTABLE home. The green collar team was extremely respectful of my space during their work. Just in the first night alone I could feel a difference. My bedroom used to feel 5-10 degrees warmer than the rest of my home. Now I don't feel any difference when I walk into the bedroom. Used them to install multiple new HVAC systems in two houses. Turns out they installed both the condenser and blower units INCORRECTLY resulting in multiple expensive failures 5 years later. In fact, everything was installed crooked with the single exception of a drain pan, which SHOULD be at a tilt! And they don't warrantee any meaningful part of the work. We had an attic dust infiltration problem that has lasted 25 years in our 50 year old two story house. Adam Eastberg of Green Collar Operations spent 3 hours diagnosing the problem, and came up with a great solution, that also reduced noise in our house, and increased A/C efficiency and airflow to our bedroom. The Green Colar work team, including the handsome Brandon Colt, and friendly, commuicative Corey Johnson did a careful implentation job of a new return air duct from the bedroom, moving the air filter to the attic right before the blower, and sealing all A/C vents to the ceiling with mastic glue to keep the fast grill airflow from sucking cellulose dust from the ceiling top into our house. This team did the best work I've ever seen an HVAC contractor do, and we've had about 5 companies work this problem. We don't know if we can stop the cellulose dust ever, but the house is much quieter, the airflow stronger, and I believe it is actually cooler already due to the increased and balanced air flow efficiency to our attic A/C cooling unit. The price was less than I would expect for 2.5 man-days of work, parts and skilled diagnosis. read more

We had Bill from Green Collar come out to re-inspect our attic. We knew that we needed more insulation among other things and requested a quote. Bill had drawn us a quick diagram of what he planned to do and delivered perfectly on the said quote. Quick and painless! They did a quality job which of course was nice but the best of it all was their customer service. I'm very keen on how businesses treat customers from start to finish. Once I notice I'm being pushed to commit to a quote that's when I tend to back away and just move on. Never felt any of that with this transaction. As anyone should, do your own research before asking for a quote so you could tell an upsell from what you actually need. Their crew was very professional and finished fairly quickly. I have had the best experience with Green Collar Operations. From the initial audit to the today's inspection by the city, they went above and beyond my expectations. Allison in the office was a pleasure to work with throughout the scheduling process. In order to improve the energy efficiency of our house, they added insulation to our attic and weatherstripping to our doors. This winter, we were able to keep our thermostat six degrees lower! That probably sounds absurd - but with our 1950s house, there was little remaining insulation prior to Green Collar's work. Kermit says "It's not easy being green" but he clearly never worked with Green Collar Operations. Save money on your utility bill, help the environment, and get rebates from the City to help pay for it. And they handle all the paperwork! In 2010, they added insulation to the attic, sealed some window sills, and added weather stripping to exterior doors. The City kicked in a substantial rebate, but even without that, the upgrades would have paid for themselves over a couple of hot Austin Summers. Recently, they did my ECAD audit for the sale of my home, and I was reminded of how pleasant they were to deal with, and how much money the upgrades saved me, so it is time to give props. read more

We had Green Collar do general improvements on our home over a year ago. I can't really comment on how well it improved our energy efficiency since this spring and summer are signifcantly hotter, but bottom line is they did an OK job in the end but we would NOT hire them again and would not recommend them to others. Read on for more (I know, it's long). The first guy who came out to quote (Keith?) was really nice, knowledgeable, and accomodating. He gave us a good quote for what we need to do to improve the efficiency of our 1947 house (original windows and all) with what would work best for our money (additional insulation, duct repair, weather stripping) versus what would be less of a return for our investment (radiant barrier). The problems started when the crew came out. They did their job quickly and half-ass in our opinion. Several things that Keith discussed were not addressed or even looked at including: - evaluating windows for leaks that could be fixed or improved - a couple of sizable holes around pipes in the bathroom and kitchen that were leaking air into the walls were not fixed - weather stripping around the doors not done There seemed to be a BIG disconnect between Keith and the crew who did the work. Either he over-promised or the crew under-delivered (we think the latter). We notified them of our disappointment and they sent out additional guys to correct the problems, although they had to come out 2 times as the first time all of the issues STILL weren't corrected. Another minor annoyance: the crew taped up all of our air vents to do their work and when they ripped off the tape alot of the paint came off of the vents as well. They ended up replacing (at our request) a couple of these vents, but my husband just ended up replacing the rest. Not a huge deal but disappointing that they were so careless. Bottom line, our first impression was great but the final job left us feeling that they were a bit incompentent. They were really great at selling their product, but the work done did not live up to expectations. If you lived in a newer home or had a very simple job to do they might be a decent bet, but if you have an older home in centeral austin and you want good weatherization updates all around, I would look elsewhere. read more

These guys are great! My home inspector came out and looked at our home before we purchased it. He said that the insulation in the attic was awful. After shopping for prices, I had Green Collar Operations come out to give me a quote on our home. Brad came to our home and not only saw issues with the insulation but he saw gaps in our doors and a hole in the duct system that needed to be sealed. They came out blew in the insulation, weatherized the doors and fixed the hole in the duct system. The owner of Green Collar, Rob, came out and reviewed the work...which made us feel great. We had the sellers give us a few of their old electric bills. We are $100+ down from their bills last summer! (Note: I wrote this review during the summer and forgot to post it. We've been in the house for over six months and our utility bills are still great) I am not sure if they had the place like fridge but I have a huge feeling that the work that Green Collar did has something to do with the decrease. The home inspector told me that the best thing you can do to keep utilities costs down is have good insulation. And the gaps in the doors that we had were massive, not to mention that we would have never noticed the hole in the duct system. read more

My husband and I needed new insulation in the attic of our late Sixties home and didn't have a large budget to dedicate to the project. We had already replaced the siding, insulation (under siding), windows and exterior doors. Still, we were frustrated with the fast accumulation of dust after cleaning and how high our electric bills were during the summer. We installed cellular blinds and blackout curtains, and kept the house at 80 degrees most days, but still didn't see much difference in our bill. After calling five companies for bids, we were most impressed with Green Collar. When I called, owner Alison Scott responded quickly and scheduled us for an estimate the following week. Bill Cook came out to inspect our attic and was incredibly through. His plan for improving our home's energy efficiency included increasing the insulation thickness, sealing and testing the ducts and HVAC system, weather stripping our furnace closet door and exterior doors, and caulking the plumbing penetrations. He also recommended properly ducting our guest bath fan and have baffles installed above the soffits. We were surprised at how much work Green Collar offered for the price. The majority of the companies we called charged 80-100% of Green Collar's quote, just for the insulation. Bill was honest about prices and expectations for our home, and we didn't feel pushed to schedule the work. It was an easy decision to choose Green Collar. Having done quite a bit of remodeling on our home, we've worked with lots of contractors. Even though we chose Green Collar, we still didn't have high expectations for the timeliness, cleanliness or precision of the work. I'm so happy we were pleasantly surprised! The day of, Ingrid and Jacob showed up on time, respectfully wore masks and explained what they would be doing. They checked the air vents in each room, and replaced a boot in the attic above the primary bath. After the guest bath fan was ducted and the baffles were installed, they sealed the ducts and plumbing penetrations. Weather stripping was replaced for each exterior door, and in the furnace closet. Fiberglass insulation was blown into the attic, with a rating upon completion of R49 (18 inches). Finally, they tested the ducts and HVAC system. We were happy to see a dramatic improvement in the ducts' air leakage levels. One of the owners, Rob Scott, came out to inspect the work a few days later. He competed an ECAD for us at a great price and answered our additional questions. To say we're ecstatic is an understatement! Green Collar went above and beyond, and we highly recommend them to anyone looking for professional and ethical energy efficiency specialists. read more

He was one of the more knowledgeable installers we talked to, and I felt comfortable that he'd be able to handle all our special requests. We had a few people come out to give us quotes but Bill impressed us with his knowledge, willingness to walk through problems, and general attitude. Overall Green Collar did a great job of righting my 40 year old duct system. Green Collar responded to my request and came out faster than any other 4 companies i reached out to. They gutted the old system that was falling apart, put in something from this century, rebalanced my home and made sure everything ran efficiently. The difference the new system has made is unbelievable and worth the cost. I would recommend Green Collar with a few caveats... The experience wasn't without a few hiccups. First i was misquoted not once, but twice. While the first quote did seem too good to be true, the final cost was about double what i was originally quoted due to simple mistakes from the sales person that should have been easily avoided. The construction time I was originally quoted was around 2 days, but I ended up having to take 4 consecutive days off work to accommodate the work done. I'll give them a pass there since my attic was a tight squeeze. And lastly, they left a few messes just about everywhere. Insulation and dust under all the vents, plaster or some junk from the ladder's feet everywhere they placed it, when they replaced the door seals they just left all the trimmings on the floor (didn't even try on that one), and duct seal goop all over the stuff that was in my attic. read more
