He spent four days analyzing how to upgrade and bring up to code my Hyde Park old relic of a home. His communication was excellent. He sent me drawings and diagrams and information about my ac project which is old and complicated. I did not get this kind of feedback and analysis from my other 2 other bids. Bill is a genius. When my AC went out, during a freakish heat wave of course, I dealt with several HVAC companies of varying levels of competence, honesty, and profit-max orientation before I finally called 1st Choice Energy--and I wish they *had* been my First Choice. Not only did they replace my old HVAC with a more efficient unit, they worked in partnership with Austin Energy to upgrade and weatherize my entire house, getting rid of funky old ductwork, sealing everything up, and moving the furnace to a better location. Over the years, I'd gotten used to having a few cold rooms and too many warm ones, but I now have consistent, comfortable cool. This took quite a bit of work on their part, but Matt and everyone on the crew made it easy to have them around. They were hard-working, respectful, friendly, even fun. And they did it all at a price that even this starving artist can afford. I cannot recommend them highly enough. I signed up for the Austin Energy In-Home Energy Assessment and found that I needed more attic insulation, leaky ducts sealed, and our building envelope sealed. After getting 3 bids from participating contractors, I decided to go with 1st Choice Energy. And I'm very glad I did. I worked with Bill Cook through the whole process, and I can't recommend Bill and 1st Choice Energy enough. Bill was super responsive and great to work with, answering all my questions and concerns over email, text, or phone quickly and thoroughly. That really makes all the difference for me -- a contact person who is honest and always available to answer questions. The work was completed two days ago by three fine young men (who worked their tails off) and Bill, and I am very pleased with everything. It's so reassuring to know our 1950s-era home is now as air tight as it's every going to be with adequate insulation heading into another Austin summer. We had a great experience with 1st Choice Energy after buying a new home and needing all vents and tubing redone in the attic due to age of the home and huge energy loss on our ECAD. 1st Choice Energy was immediately responsive, very quick to schedule a time for a quote, and Bill Cook took his time and explained exactly what we needed and why. They are upfront with their pricing and a huge plus is they handle all the rebate applications with the City of Austin, including scheduling the inspector to come. We expected the work to take a lot longer, but they completed it quickly and efficiently, with the work guys showing up on time each morning. The fact that this is a family company and that Matt the owner comes to check on each job and help right along with the crew gave us a lot of confidence in them doing good work. Great Work and Service! 1st Choice Energy installed a new AC at my home in Central Austin. They added insulation in my attic and replaced the attic air ducts that were leaking air. They were also able to help me with the City of Austin rebates which included 0% percent financing through Velocity Credit Union. The crew was professional and cleaned up during and after the job. Do NOT hire 1st Choice Energy. They improperly designed and installed an HVAC system at my house that caused thousands of dollars in water damage including mold. The owner has denied all responsibility and his insurance doesn't even cover mold claims. Now I am having to sue him since he doesn't have proper insurance and he won't pay for the damages. Do not hire an HVAC contractor unless they have mold coverage in their insurance. read more

Very impressed with 1st Choice Energy and their entire team. I knew my AC was on it's last legs and decided to take advantage of the City of Austin rebates before my AC actually died. We had three companies come to bid and 1st Choice Energy was the company we picked. David was professional, helpful and didn't pressure or feel "salesy". The process was kind of long but that was the City's fault because we had to get on their schedule. Ashley was great and took care of everything on that end for us. We didn't have any problems with the people that came out to perform the work (first day was the new condenser and furnace the second day was the insulation and duct sealing). The only problems were (and the reason I did four stars): after they completed the work I noticed our bedroom didn't have the same force of cold air that the other rooms did. Turns out the person that did the install accidentally closed the valve that regulated the air flow to that room. But, they came out the next day and took care of it without issue. So, not a big deal. The other issue was they had to come out again after the City inspector came out because there were some things that needed to be done to meet the city requirements. But, again, they came back out the next day and fixed those minor issues. Overall, 1st Choice Energy is a great company. I'm okay with little mistakes like the ones mentioned above, especially when they are taken care of quickly, like David and his team did. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone. read more

I was interested in using Austin Energy's rebate for energy efficiency so I reached out to 4 companies via the site and chose to work with 1st Choice Energy. Erik came out and did a thorough inspection of the attic (not easy in July) and came up w/ 3 options. After reviewing, I asked about a 4th option and we went with that. Erik was able to schedule the pre-inpection w/ Austin Energy within a week and then the 1st Choice crew came out the following week. Derrick and the crew were great. They treated my house and dogs well. Erik then set up the post-inpection for the following week which passed. There was one hiccup but David and Erik went above and beyond. They were professional and attentive in getting the matter resolved and making sure I was comfortable in my house in the summer heat. My only real complaint was that during scheduling, the person I spoke with said they'd be done the first day by 2pm but they actually had to come out the next day so in total, the work took 1.5 days. read more

Amazing Customer Service. Thanks to David, our energy bills went from over $500/month to less than $100/month (score!). Even more impressive, though, was the professionalism of David and the team while they worked at the house. We were able to set an appointment to install our new unit within a week, and David came out himself to do the estimate. Deron came out, did a thorough energy audit on our 1970's home, and suggested a number of improvements. We opted for duct sealing, added insulation, weather stripping on doors, and solar screens on the windows. We didn't actually get the pleasure of using this company, but only because he is completely honest. We were told we needed an energy audit to sell our home in Pflugerville. We contacted James with 1st Choice Energy and, long story short, he informed us that because we didn't live in Austin we didn't require this audit. This saved us between $200-300. This is the first time we have sold a home so we had no idea we didn't require this in this city. Our realtor was thinking we needed it because we were in Travis County. My request was to have additional insulation blown into my condo attic. David arrived on time, inspected the attic and gave me an honest evaluation of what needed to be done and even suggested a way to cool the 2nd floor of the condo equal to the coolness of the 1st floor. On installation day David arrived with his crew, Alex and Anthony, introduced them to me and left them to do the work. Alex and Anthony are to be commended as they made sure that I knew what they were doing, how long it would take and had me look everything over before they left. The areas they worked in were so clean you'd never know they had been there. David Malone and his team were on time, on budget and did such a great job that even the City of Austin rebate program inspector was impressed! Our old ductwork was falling apart and was not only extremely inefficient but also let in any pollen and particulate that made its way into our attic. Our allergies were off the charts and so were our electric bills. Our air quality is excellent now and our bills are significantly lower due to the increase in energy efficiency. We were in the process of selling our house, received an offer much faster than expected and needed to get the energy audit done as fast as possible. We contacted Dave Malone at 1st Choice Energy and even though he was very busy, he said he would do his best to squeeze us into his schedule. After a day passed we called Dave and asked him to be sure to try to get us on his schedule soon. He told me he had already completed the audit that day and he was writing up the report as we were talking. Sure enough, when we looked closely, we could tell that someone had been in the house, but just barely. His crew was thorough and so clean; it was very surprising that they were checking our ductwork, crawling around in the attic, and they cleaned-up after themselves so well that we couldn't easily tell that anyone had been in the house.
